Helen Thomas Retires

Filed under: Media Bias — DRJ @ 11:27 am

[Guest post by DRJ]

Helen Thomas has retired — abruptly, according to the AP — as a columnist for Hearst News.

This is a sad way for anyone to end their career but I doubt she kept her feelings secret from those with whom she worked. They knew what she thought about Israel and the Jews. They just couldn’t bear for us to know it.

  1. [Her colleagues] knew what she thought about Israel and the Jews. They just couldn’t bear for us to know it.

Maybe because in their heart of hearts they sort of agree with her.

  2. off topic question, drj… why is every post by you labeled a “guest post by DRJ?” i mean its been that way for months, so at some point, it seems like less of a guest thing and just its your home too?

that’s just my $0.02 on that.

One thomas. is it just me or does the white house press room seem prettier today?

  3. I think this is a sham and a shame. They knew all along this is what she believed. As said before by others, nothing’s changed. This is just Obama throwing her “under the bus” like others that he really agrees with but can’t own up to it in public.

I say they should let her stay just to show what many in the WH press corps believes. I’m tempted to start a campaign to refuse to accept her retirement. This country is based on free speech right? Let everyone talk and the rest of us will make our choices, the more self-disclosure the better.

I think the ideal time to interview somebody is about 4-5 hours after taking an Ambien on a late night flight. That’s when the press corps could get some really interesting material.

I think that’s the ideal time for President Obama’s next State of the Union address. 😉

  6. Btw, we should all be nice to Helen Thomas. She has been really depressed ever since Dorothy dropped a house on her sister.

    (bwahahahahaha)

  7. I have detested the woman so long I forget the trigger event… Reagan years? Carter?

But I voted in the PJTV poll against removing her WH credentials. Keep your enemies closer…

  8. I think all the outraged outrageousness of the response of the media is hilarious. It’s as if they just dicovered she is a bigoted hag when they have known and carried water for her for years. Spare me!

  13. but I doubt she kept her feelings secret from those with whom she worked. They knew what she thought about Israel and the Jews.

Ah, most of us who’ve been paying attention to Gollum’s rants since the Reagan days had her MO nailed to the core. She’s symptomatic of how irrelevant the WH press corps has become over the past decade.

  14. They knew? hell WE KNEW! That old bat has been attempting to Palestinians their own Country at the EXPENSE of Israelis’ for probably her whole life but definitely in my lifetime of 40+ years of watching her!

Hysterical, great play on words (and ironic that she could never hold any career, any opinions in an arab state).

  19. What did Beckel say, Colonel?

  20. OK, the haiku is getting better, at least the correct syllable counts … but where is the seasonal reference?

    SPQR (26be8b)

  21. Never mind. Apparently Beckel defended Thomas on Fox today.

  28. I wonder what Amy Alkon thinks about all of this – I believe she used to work with Gollum, and she may even be of Jewish descent.

    Dmac (3d61d9)

  29. Funny how her bigotry was tolerated and accepted in the MSM for all those decades.

  30. Do you think Helen will get a semi-permanent gig on “Countdown”?

    AD - RtR/OS! (f11dd4)

  31. Her comments aside, why did any news organization keep her on for so many years to begin with?! It’s not like budgets in the journalism industry — particularly in today’s era — are so huge and generous that featherbedding is AOK.

Thomas’s presence in the media was like the opposite extreme of age-ism. Or she was like a variation of “Saturday Night Live” on NBC, washed-up ages ago, often painful to watch, well past its prime, and yet inexplicably hanging on year after year.

  32. I was looking at a photo of Helen Thomas in the front row of a White House briefing and it occurred to me that the WH correspondents are thinking about one thing tonight: Who will get Helen’s chair?

    DRJ (d43dcd)

  33. The empty chair should perhaps remain empty as long as it continues to be a strong visual reminder to the press corps that no one, even the honorary member, is above judgment for their moral lapses, or habit, of bigotry.

It’s refreshing to know that the crush of public opinion (and let’s throw in the WH, too) still holds sway. It would be devastating if we were at the point that the outcry of condemnation had no impact and it was business as usual. Of course we’re well on the way but not yet there.

    Dana (1e5ad4)

  34. “Who will get Helen’s chair?”

Ordinarily, I do not think this way, but I kinda hope it’s someone Jewish. Preferably a conservative or neo-conservative like me.

Lord knows, though, that it will be a die hard democrat shill. I’m trying to picture someone as partisan on ‘my side’ as Helen was to hers asking Obama questions from the front row as Helen asked Fleischer and Snow and Bush and Reagan.

    Not gonna happen.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  35. I would feel better if POTUS sounded off about those kinds of comments as shameful. But I’m not holding my breath. After all, Reverend Wright has been just as offensive, and we saw how that was treated.

    Eric Blair (e2121c)

  36. If the WH had guts, they would donate that chair to the Holocaust Museum.

    Eric Blair (e2121c)

  37. Her children should have retired 20 years ago.
