Hillary Clinton: U.S. Should Be Like Brazil

Filed under: International — DRJ @ 6:40 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

Hillary Clinton thinks rich Americans don’t pay their share of taxes and the United States should be more like Brazil:

“Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made a rare foray into domestic politics today, offering her view that — given America’s high unemployment — wealthy Americans don’t pay enough taxes.

“The rich are not paying their fair share in any nation that is facing the kind of employment issues [America currently does] — whether it’s individual, corporate or whatever [form of] taxation forms,” Clinton told an audience at the Brookings Institute, where she was discussing the administration’s new National Security Strategy.

Clinton said the comment was her personal opinion. “I’m not speaking for the administration, so I’ll preface that with a very clear caveat,” she said.

Clinton went on to cite Brazil as a model.

“Brazil has the highest tax-to-GDP rate in the Western Hemisphere and guess what — they’re growing like crazy,” Clinton said. “And the rich are getting richer, but they’re pulling people out of poverty.”

Brazil is not a good model for Ameridca America. With its expansive spending on social welfare programs and few funds for its decaying infrastructure, Brazil’s economic system is unsustainable.

  1. I’m sure Hillary and Bill are going to voluntarily pay lots more taxes, just for the good of the country. NOT!

  2. If Brazil is doing so well, why are we sending them aid?

  3. Two questions for Hildebeast:

    1) What is the “fair share”? 40%? 50%? 60% of income? Do you, like Obama, believe that no one should make more than $250k per year?

    2) How much did you and Billy Bob pay last year?

    3) Will you state that going forward, you and Billy Bob will pay 100% of your income over the threshold you established in 1)?

    4) Will you also pay your back taxes for the past twenty years based on what you established in 1)?

It’ll be like throwing a bucket of water on her.

can’t you just see her and Bill in matching thongs, cruising Carnival for SYT’s?

  5. I think Hillary sees Obama’s polls and thinks she may someday have a shot at replacing him. Just in case that day comes, she’s adopting some of Obama’s soak-the-rich rhetoric.

  6. Brazil is not a good model for Ameridca

it’s an even worse recipe for America.

and to think that some people wanted her to be President?

  7. Yikes. That’s a typo I need to fix.

  10. I agree with you folks above. When anything is said about “the rich should be paying more in taxes” the next question should be what was their net income, what did they have pay to for taxes, and how much extra did they pay.

If slow on the response point out what percentage of the tax base is already paid by the wealthiest, and point out FDR’s hypocrisy and ask if that is the model for the Dem party, that all of the other rich people should be paying more taxes.

Conservatives who say they believe more help should come from the private sector can show their returns and how much they donated to charity. I don’t expect someone who thinks aid should come through the government to give much to charity, but if they are intellectually honest it would make sense that they gave extra to the government, and keep the discussion on those points.

  12. Good grief, these people are insufferable.

First we have our President proclaiming, “I do think at a certain point you’ve made enough money” and now we have Hillary telling us “The rich are not paying their fair share…”.

I wish they would mind their business and understand what a great privilege it is to live in a country where making money is a good thing, instead of finding ways to condemn it as if it were sinful or something.

I also wish they would stop trying to stifle or inhibit individual growth of wealth amongst Americans through excessive taxes, regs, etc. and deciding for us what is enough.

And can they please stop telling us that we should be like another country because how and who we are just isn’t good enough. Their projection has grown tiresome.

  13. Someone tell our SoS that the rich in Brazil live behind walls while the poor run through the slums. My sister-in-law spent a year of grad school in Rio and came back with a Brazilian boyfriend.

Egads the stories they told. Society is closer to Lord of the Flies than Pleasantville. The poor down there are really poor – as in slums with no running water or electricity. Their crime makes Chicago look like an Amish village.

If Clinton really believes this Marxist crap she should spend a month in Rio or Sao Paulo. She could tell them how the poor live here and see how many people try to leave Brazil with her.

  14. Hillary’s frightening, death-defying experience from dodging sniper fire while at an airport in Bosnia several years ago has definitely affected her judgment. The poor woman now is more touched in the head than before.

Right. The current administration would have quite a beef with what she said. Their model is Venezuela, not Brazil.

  18. Well, Hillary may soon be right, but she isn’t yet.

If the trend continues I will move to Brazil. Lived there for 11 years in my youth so it’s a second home anyway.

They have pretty serious nanny state policies that will ensure the huge gap between classes continues. The incentives are all wrong for the masses.

What makes you think she has any idea how the poor live in the United States? Unlike her estranged husband, she did not grow up in poverty, but in a well-to-do (though not wealthy) household; after high school, she matriculated to Wellesley College, not exactly an inexpensive school in the low-rent district.

Our Secretary of State has certainly heard of poverty, probably read about it, and married a man who grew up in poverty (though he wasn’t poor when they met), but I seriously doubt she has any understanding of it at all.

  25. “But see, there’s rich people, then there’s middle-class people, then there’s poor people. BUT, if we would just well-educate everybody — and don’t tell me that some people are limited in what they are able to learn; we’re all human, therefore we’re all able to be well-educated — and guarantee everyone a middle-class income (raising up the poor while stifling the rich), then everything will be just dandy! See?”

    Exactly.
As I say over and over, anybody who takes deductions doesn’t seriously believe he doesn’t pay enough in taxes.

And Brazil? My friends who live there drive armored SUVs. They will not stop on the streets and get out of their car for anything.
