Don’t Get Cocky

[Guest post by DRJ]

Voters wearing chicken costumes will be banned from Nevada polls as an “inappropriate and obvious” advocacy message:

“Voters dressed in chicken costumes won’t be allowed inside Nevada polling places this year.

State election officials on Friday added chicken suits to the list of banned items after weeks of ridicule directed at Republican Senate candidate Sue Lowden.

The millionaire casino executive and former beauty queen recently suggested that people barter with doctors for medical care, like when “our grandparents would bring a chicken to the doctor.”

Democrats responded by setting up a website, “Chickens for Checkups,” and by sending volunteers in chicken suits to her campaign events.”

Sounds like a pretty fowl race.

*sigh* Did I have to check again to see to which political party the Senate candidate described in this fashion by the LA Times belonged?

Why, no. No, I did not.

Isn’t there something discrminatory here, though. How about other barnyard animals?

  9. OK. But would they be allowed in if the chickens wore Purple SEIU t-shirts?

  10. Painted Jaguar: You are all very clever with the word play, not up to par with Stickly-Prickly and Slow-Steady, for I can still understand what you are saying.

But very clever, nonetheless, and none of you are acting like llamas.

Now, even though the “Democrats” (whatever those are) were planning to dress as chickens, it seems clear (much clearer than the waters of the dark, turbid Amazon) that they intended to act like llamas, so you see, I think it was very right for them to be banned. It is right that there is one animal that serves as an example of rude behavior, as you agree, but no one needs to experience 6 foot tall spitting chickens. And if you disagree, my mummy says there is no hope for you, and she is the cleverest of all.

  11. that is definitely some cocksure blogging.

That being said, i honestly wonder, why are we so afraid of a little speech near a voting booth? i don’t get it. i’m not saying they are definitely wrong, i am just saying i never heard a good reason.

and btw, at my everyone draw mohammed site, we aren’t stopping. In fact we have been given a signficant badge of honor: we are now banned in pakistan! yeah!

And i have an allegedly complete list of banned sites, here: http://everyonedrawmohammed.blogspot.com/2010/05/banned-in-pakistan-dreaded-weblinks-of.html

  13. “…why are we so afraid of a little speech near a voting booth…”
Most state’s election codes restrict campaign speech to a perimeter of around 100′ from the entrance to a polling place.
You cannot enter a polling place wearing clothing that displays a partisan message.
I would think in today’s political environment, someone dressed completely in “red”, “blue”, or even “green”, would be restricted from crossing the perimeter.

‘Cause, you know, God forbid two citizens should engage in a business transaction without the Federal Government weighing in to regulate it from start to finish.

It is to remove the possibility of intimidation from the polling place; which is why Holder and his DoJ was remiss, if not outright in violation of the laws they are sworn to uphold and enforce, in their handling of the Black Panther incident in Philadelphia.

    AD - RtR/OS! (21733c)

  20. AW, speaking as a former long-term poll worker, I think a big part of the reason is that allowing people to electioneer within the polling place would make it impossible to prevent voter intimidation.

  23. Can Republican female pols/pundits collectively agree to try and not sound stupid? Can’t they just try really, really hard to think sharply before they open their mouths in public and make sure that what they say will not give ammunition to their opponents? Lowden may be a brilliant woman but with comments like this – in spite of the point she was attempting to make – she just sounds ridiculous. I’m starting to feel the same way about Palin…. grumble…grumble…

  24. AD – One time I had a dread locks wig on with a giant dildo sticking out from my forehead like a rhinoceros horn plus a few other accessories. I thought it was pretty normal. My BIL is holding on to those pictures, but I’ve got him as Elvis in a white quiana jump suit with the stars down the legs, big hair and side burns, so it evens out I guess.

    daleyrocks (1d0d98)

  25. Sorry, Dana. But I think it was a valid comment, reinforced by the commentary we have seen from Mike_K on what is happening in Doctor’s offices in response to current government programs.
In a less prosperous place and/or time (which we may soon revisit) people went to the Doctor and paid as they could (seen Doc Hollywood lately), and physicians knew that by accepting barter, he was preserving his patient’s good will, and sense of worth, by not imposing charity upon someone who does not mind sharing, but would never ask for charity from a non-family member.
Harry Reid, and a campaign initiative this large would have to cross his desk, is a petty, small-minded, bitter person who thinks nothing of denigrating an opponent, and an entire class of people who he considers beneath him. And, as someone who brags about his ascent from the poverty of his childhood in Searchlight, he should be ashamed.
But, he’s a Leftist, who are never ashamed of anything except their country.

AD, I think you missed this part of my comment: Lowden may be a brilliant woman but with comments like this – in spite of the point she was attempting to make – she just sounds ridiculous.

Of course her point was valid in light of everything we see going on, however, (and this was my point) she sounded silly and worthy of mocking. So much of politics now is presentation and a 20 second snippet replayed repeatedly, thus a politician better make every second count – make it smart, make it resonate with voters, and make them mentally remember to check out anything you have to say in the future because you’ve been impressively smart in your few comments (a la Paul Ryan during the Health Care debates. Everything out of his mouth was smart, penetrating, and reminded us that he was a force to be reckoned with).

I think Lowden had a good point. I think her delivery was far less impressive. The right needs to stop giving the MSM such easy openings.

    Dana (1e5ad4)

  37. Dana….Point well taken. In too many cases it seems that some on the Right have been reading, and believing, their own press releases (and the spin).
If you run scared, and smart, you minimize the danger of losing.

    AD - RtR/OS! (21733c)

  38. What she needs is someone to come up with a smart idea to take advantage of their mocking.

Show the clip of her, show their clip making fun, hit with a counter-punch.

For example: “At least when your grandparents paid with a chicken, they gave it to the person making the medical decisions” then show some clerical person in a little cubicle on the phone looking in a book. I’m sure there are far better than that, for I didn’t spend 30 seconds on it.

Yes, it is always good to keep on point and not give anything that can be used against you. But on the other hand, if you can’t make the truth stand out you won’t win, and you don’t want to win, because you don’t want to win by being better liars than your opponent.

I don’t know, but it is one can of tuna for a CAT scan, and one needs to negotiate the price on a case by case basis for a PET scan.

  43. This is a well worn Dem strategy. Twenty years ago, when I was still a Democrat, a campaign manager suggested that someone put on a chicken suit and stand outside the opponent’s office. I thought he was kidding. A light started to go off in my head…maybe these people are just idiots.
