Chris Christie, GOP Rock Star

Is New Jersey Governor Chris Christie the GOP’s new leading man?

“He’s on the precipice of bona fide folk hero status.

It took about two minutes from the time Senate President Steve Sweeney certified the passage of the millionaires tax package for Gov. Chris Christie to veto the bills at his desk…

“What took you so long ?” asked Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak.

Christie sat at a wooden desk emblazoned with the seal of the state of New Jersey and swiftly signed vetoes.

“We’ll be back, governor,” said Sweeney.

“Alright, we’ll see,” said Christie.

The WSJ says Christie was Born to Veto. I’ll take that over Springsteen any day.

  2. Corzine’s campaign made sure to remind people Christie was a “big” man but it seems Corzine and the Democrats are the real pigs in New Jersey. Corzine is the one telling the state it needs to go on a diet.

  5. No BS. No lecturing, no condescention.
Just a polite “No thanks and see ya’ later.”
    Now that is leadership.

  6. The fat thing from the Democrats was just stupid. First of all, he carries it well and, most of all, when you look at him the first thing you see is the intelligence and education and humor and good character in his face.

  8. A man. Amen!

You see the guy running for, I think, Agriculture Commissioner in Alabama. If not, look him up too. He’s a folksy version of Christie.

  10. Not a cocktail Republican. Need more of him. Willing to fight for what is important and not “compromise” for the sake of.

  11. Calling either Christie or Peterson a Republican is treading dangerously close to mistaken identity, they both strike me as outspoken Conservatives currently residing under the GOP’s big tent, but keeping their options open.

  13. Don’t believe the hype.

That PDF file didn’t open up, but if you’re trying to make the point that Christie actually is sort of RINOish, then in the context of a generally uber-blue state like New Jersey, you gotta take what you can get.

I know here in the “Golden State” (HA!), a recent poll showed that the 2 Republican candidates for the gubernatorial spot, originally ahead of Jerry Brown, now are a few points behind. Trailing a guy (ie, the former “Governor Moonbeam”) who not long ago said that government-employee unions should do his bidding for him.

Moreover, I don’t take such polls as necessarily unreliable snapshots of the moment. Not when I read about, for example, a wealthy developer in Los Angeles, known for being a Republican and generally of a conservative bent, saying he’s backing Jerry Brown. And the reason the multi-millionaire gives for his position?! That when a state like California is as screwed up as it is, the voters need to turn to politicians who have years of experience in government.

    Pathetic!

So if people who should know better are that idiotic, imagine how really foolish are the flat-out limousine liberals (and one does not have to be wealthy to be guilty of that) throughout the state. Or a high percentage of California’s electorate devoted to a two-faced, progressivism-means-I’m-kind-and-sophisticated mindset.

  14. Christie’s recent press conference takedown of another snobbish elite columnist from the local paper there was a classic in it’s own right – truly remarkable, and stunning in it’s clarity, forthrightness and rectitude (“this is who I am”):

Watch his aides laugh their asses off as he continues onward with his lecture – wish we had just one guy like this in IL politics.

  15. Christie’s verything Arnold said he’d be, but ain’t.

We need more like him and conservatives need to do a better job educating the public and promoting our message of less government, fiscal restraint, free-market principles, merit and professionalism over patronage and ensuring that both immigration and foreign policies preserve and improve our society.

  16. make that “everything”…

  17. Christie’s verything Arnold said he’d be, but ain’t.

Schwarzenegger started off on a more conservative tilt, back when he liked to mock the state’s Democrat-controlled legislature as being full of “girly men.” He was more hard nosed towards all the liberal politicians challenging him at the time. So what happened?

Back in 2005, the governor placed on the ballot several proposals that would have enacted sensible reforms in California government. But the voters resoundingly turned them all down. He, in effect, was disemboweled by a large majority of the electorate. From that point onward, he’s willingly accepted the role of very squishy RINO.

In a society (or non-totalitarian system) like ours, when blame has to be dished out, I place far more of the responsibility not on the shoulders of politicians but on the voters who put those pols into office. For example, on the large number of people in California who believe their liberalism is beautiful and wonderful, and who need to look in the mirror when trying to figure out who really screwed things up.

  18. #14, Mark, although I share your opinion of Governor Moonbeam, perhaps the LA developer was talking in code: “politicians who have years of experience in government” can be translated to “politicians who know what quid pro quo means, but have enough sense to keep quiet around open microphones and don’t leave their fingerprints on revealing documents.”

BTW, your analysis of Schwarzenegger’s transgenderation is spot on.

Yes, Arnold was gutted and castrated by the voters in that special election,
but the knife was handed to them by the Teachers/Nurses/Firefighters/Police/Correctional-Officers Unions.
They recognized a threat to their future well-being, and they dealt with it!
