Website News

The website changed hosts today and while the migration has been a little rocky, posts and comments seem to load faster.

Please use the comments on this post to list the things that seem strange or don’t work, and we will ask the new host to fix them in the coming days. For example, comments still lack formatting and show the name “You” until the browser is refreshed. And some readers who use Blackberrys are unable to comment at all.

We appreciate your patience over the last weeks and months, and thanks for helping us get the kinks ironed out.

  1. I’m not seeing any comments later than about 10:00 AM on the extended individual post pages.

    Comment by SPQR (26be8b) — 5/18/2010 @ 7:20 pm

  2. comments from several hours ago concerning the harvard student never showed up on the thread even though they seemed to post and did appear on the “recent comments” log on the right side. If you go to the Harvard thread even now it says theee are 9 comments but only 7 show up to read. I believe that many more comments than 9 were submitted on that thread.

  3. Twice my comments have never appeared, although the notification they’ve been posted successfully says so. Also, my name shows up briefly in the “Recent Comments” section. However it disappears after a few moments.

I hope this makes it to your attention.

  4. I think ya’ll are seeing the old website instead of the new one. Here are some things you can try:

    1. Hit “CNTRL” and “F5″ at the same time, or

    2. Close your browser and reopen it, or

    3. Open a new tab in the same browser, or

    4. Run Disk Cleanup or restart your computer.

This should go away by tomorrow. Let us know if it doesn’t.

  6. Spotty. This one works but comments on other posts don’t appear.

  7. I have cleared caches and deleted histories, I have changed computers, I have hit Ctrl and F5 simultaneously early and often. After I submit this I will turn off my computer, unplug it, disconnect it from the internet, reset the modem, put aluminum foil over my head and wrap it around the computer, walk around backwards, toss salt over my shoulder, and restart.

In the meantime, the Recent Comments listing states my comment at “Provocative Speech and thuggery” took, somewher, and is possibly being seen, by someone.

I am seeing your comments normally, which indicates you’re on the new host now. Most of your problems should be resolved very soon, if they’re not already.

    Comment by Stashiu3 (44da70) — 5/18/2010 @ 8:29 pm

  9. Most of your problems with the site that is… ;)

    Comment by Stashiu3 (44da70) — 5/18/2010 @ 8:30 pm

  10. Using Firefox… and the site is now snappy and efficient, just what a smart website deserves. (I hope I haven’t spoken too soon and it reverts back to the sluggish thing it was, when hitting Refresh meant it took so long to load, a person could have a birthday)…

    Comment by Dana (1e5ad4) — 5/18/2010 @ 8:35 pm

  11. I actually prefer this You Tube video.

    Thank to a friend.

    Comment by Mike K (82f374) — 5/18/2010 @ 8:39 pm

  12. …hm, although the front page shows Mike K made a comment here, and yet even refreshing doesn’t bring it up this page.

    Comment by Dana (1e5ad4) — 5/18/2010 @ 8:45 pm

  13. It shows for me as #11 Dana. Some of these artifacts should resolve on their own once the entire innertubes realizes that the host has changed. From the admin side, things are much better already.

  15. I got all excited and posted a comment. Or tried to. For five minutes. This went in at :15

  16. It hates me.

  17. I see all three comments Mac. Check to see if you have the search box in the right margin, just above “Categories”. If you do, you’re with the right host. If not, it should get there before too much longer.

    Comment by Stashiu3 (44da70) — 5/18/2010 @ 9:20 pm

  18. Comments I made this morning on the following threads now no longer appear on the site.

Connecticut Senate Race, Politically Correct Pageants, Free Speech at the White House, Should We Defend Provocative Speech.

I have reloaded the site and they still do not show up.

I know that the comments originally loaded as there were replies made to at least two of them that I saw today before leaving for work.

Several comments I made last night are still here.

    Comment by Have Blue (854a6e) — 5/18/2010 @ 9:21 pm

  19. Have Blue,

Some comments made while the website was being moved may be lost and yours might be in that group. We didn’t provide a warning and I was the main person who argued against it. I wasn’t sure the move was really going to happen, primarily because we’ve had other times we thought it would happen and it didn’t work out.

I’m sorry if any of your comments were lost. Please leave them again if you can. The move is largely done so there shouldn’t be any more problems like that.

    Comment by DRJ (d43dcd) — 5/18/2010 @ 9:29 pm

  20. From the home page it says there are 19 posts. When I click on the thread it says only 6 (like when I saw it earlier). I tried the other stuff short of restoring my computer to yesterday.

If one posts on a thread and it is lost in cyberspace where no one can see it, does the intent matter, and can other bloggers hear you grumble?

    Comment by MD in Philly (e725df) — 5/18/2010 @ 9:54 pm

  21. Recent Comments in upper Right says they have my post on this thread on website news, but when I get back here (on a new tab) I only have 6 still, and no evidence of mine.

Maybe we should go back to tin cans and string.

    Comment by MD in Philly (e725df) — 5/18/2010 @ 9:58 pm

  22. Some of my comments also have failed to appear.

    But, I figure that’s a feature, not a bug.

    Comment by Dave Surls (ee63da) — 5/18/2010 @ 10:23 pm

  23. Maybe it’s just Scarlett O’Hara wishful thinking, but I really think the website will improve for everyone by tomorrow.

    Comment by DRJ (d43dcd) — 5/18/2010 @ 10:29 pm

  24. Still no comments for me.

    Comment by SPQR (26be8b) — 5/18/2010 @ 10:40 pm

  25. I ended up having to delete all cookies associated with patterico.com to get comments to correctly display.

    Comment by SPQR (26be8b) — 5/18/2010 @ 10:45 pm

  26. I still can’t get to the comments page on any post. The comment count meter here now shows 23 entries, but when I click, and wait for a bit, the page comes up blank, with the “No comments yet” notice.

    Comment by ropelight (4ebd24) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:05 am

  27. Then I get a “Your comment has been posted successfully” notice, and my name shows up in the “Recent Comments” feature. But nothing ever actually appears in the comments.

    Comment by ropelight (4ebd24) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:07 am

  28. When I click on my name in the “Recent Comments” I get back to a page devoid of comments, complete with the “No comments yet” tag.

    Comment by ropelight (4ebd24) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:09 am

  29. I haven’t been able to make it work properly in IE this morning yet, even though i did all the cleaning and disk cleanup and rebooting, etc. After doing the same with firefox at least i have the complete thread here according to the “Recent Comments” section. We’ll see what happens next when I submit this. (“Jaws” music please…)

    Comment by MD in Philly (e725df) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:25 am

  30. I posted at least twice in the
    http://patterico.com/2010/05/18/blumenthal/
Blumenthal piece. When I reloaded they weren’t there. Using Firefox.

    Comment by IgotBupkis (79d71d) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:28 am

  31. Same thing here, if these are actually visible and I’m not seeing them.

    Comment by IgotBupkis (79d71d) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:29 am

  32. testing testing

    Comment by IgotBupkis (79d71d) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:29 am

  33. AH. interesting. Comments became visible to me when I posted from a different EMA to see if it was a Spam filter on your end gone wonky.

    Comment by IgotBupkis (79d71d) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:30 am

  34. testing parameters again…

    Comment by IgotBupkis (79d71d) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:31 am

  35. So much for that. I clicked on the listing of my post in “Recent Comments” and was brought back to the page as of 7:47 last PM when nk #6 is the last post.

    I’m in exile.

I guess I’ll start from zero again after a bit.

Stashiu3, if these computer problems don’t get fixed soon, as you promised, I’ll make you make good on your first offer. That should keep you busy for awhile…. ;-)

    Comment by MD in Philly (e725df) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:31 am

  36. Oh, that’s interesting. I switched back to my regular EMA and now both the newly visible ones AND the “alternate EMA” comments aren’t visible.

Hope that helps explain the nature of the problem. I assume somehow it’s client-side.

This is all posted using FFox 3.6 if that matters.

    Comment by IgotBupkis (79d71d) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:33 am

  37. OK. I closed the tab/page in FF, told fire fox to “forget” all PP sites, then closed FF completely. Without anything else I restarted FF, clicked on the recent comments for this thread, and it comes up full.

This will be successful for limiting the number of post I make.

    Comment by MD in Philly (e725df) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:36 am

  38. Dunno if this got put up or not, sorry for repost if it did.

    ===================
I think I can reproduce the problem, here.

If i change my posting EMA, the formerly invisible comments appear. If I switch back to the old address, both the now-visible comments and any successors become invisible again. If I switch to a third one, everything goes visible again.

Somehow you’re terminating the visible posts based on the EMA in the comment box? Probably something to do with the “posted by YOU” logic, I’d hazard a guess.

    Comment by IgotBupkis (79d71d) — 5/19/2010 @ 6:40 am

  39. I just tried closing the ff page and opened a new page, then hit hx of Google search for PP, then clicked on it. I had an updated home page, including my my last post here listed. Clicked on it, ended up on old picture of thread again with #6 the last post.

Of note, if any meaning, it took longer to load and at times date was coming from sources other than PP, such as “Counters” something. Do some of us have an adware bug or something??

I take it there are some people getting things normal, and i know that at least Igot… is/was still having problems.

all systems off, will check back later

  40. I see all your stuff. I think it’s one or more cookies from this site that’s causing the problems. Keep deleting cookies and cached files and see if that helps. Also, does your browser have a “compatibility view” feature?

    Comment by nk (db4a41) — 5/19/2010 @ 7:01 am

  41. Since we’re talking about comments …

I like short words and and the indicative and imperative. But you hillbillies, afraid of being shot by your neighbor, think that’s rude. So where I’d just get up and open a window, you’d say, “Does anyone feel a touch warm heah?”

    Comment by nk (db4a41) — 5/19/2010 @ 8:10 am

  42. I’m still getting the behavior wherein comments are not showing up, unless I repeatedly delete the patterico.com cookie which advances the time cut off of comment display.

    Comment by SPQR (26be8b) — 5/19/2010 @ 9:42 am

  43. In Firefox, under Tools, there is a Privacy tab. Within the dialog of the privacy tab is a link to “clear individual cookies”. There one can scroll down to the patterico.com entry and just delete that set of cookies.

    Comment by SPQR (26be8b) — 5/19/2010 @ 9:50 am

  44. Test. (still working issues folks, thank you for your patience.)
