Another Bad Idea: Internet Threats

A Lubbock, Texas, airport worker has been arrested for making bomb threats on the internet:

“Federal agents arrested a Lubbock airport employee this week on charges related to a bomb threat he is accused of making in early April.

Johnathan Ivins, 20, is scheduled to make his initial appearance in federal court today. The federal indictment alleging three counts against Ivins was unsealed Thursday.

In the Internet comment, Ivins allegedly threatened to place a timed bomb in a vent on a plane and another bomb “somewhere in a big city.”

“I don’t care if I get caught,” he posted. “They call me the hero.”

Twenty years old and, if convicted, he faces up to ten years in prison.

  1. In his defense, there’s not a whole lot to do out there in Lubbock.

I wonder just how sophisticated internet searching for kooky threats has become.

People are mad about all kinds of things these days, and it’s just not sinking in to some of these idiots that violence is precisely counter productive. The reason the DOJ and DHS focus on violence from vets and grannies at Tea Rallies is that it greatly diminishes credibility to be seen as violent.

On the other hand, some might get the impression that violence is highly effective against Americans. After all, look at Viacom or Ground Zero’s new Mosque plans. I hate to admit it, but some are teaching the lesson that violence is an effective solution.

  2. Dustin – Look at the violent protests against the Arizona immigration bill. I have seen several hours of Tea Party footage played on media outlets that were extremely anti-Tea Party but I have never seen bottles bouncing of cops heads at those rallies.

  3. Have Blue, I was sure the media would report the violence of the May day protests. Because I am naive. Instead, it was ‘mostly peaceful’. Complete opposite to the actually peaceful Tea Party protests being called anything from racist to Fox News astroturf by my local rag.

We can only stick to our rhetorical guns on the concept that the Tea Party’s peaceful ways are stronger in the long term than the violent way that seems to be working pretty well. Or I guess we could just make the moral decision we don’t want to cross the wrong lines.

The next time an Islamofascist tries to blow something up, we all know it will be blamed on conservatives at first. I don’t understand why, but the left actually hopes to see that level of agitation on the right.
