Obama’s Donors

First Goldman Sachs. Now BP:

“While the BP oil geyser pumps millions of gallons of petroleum into the Gulf of Mexico, President Barack Obama and members of Congress may have to answer for the millions in campaign contributions they’ve taken from the oil and gas giant over the years.

BP and its employees have given more than $3.5 million to federal candidates over the past 20 years, with the largest chunk of their money going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Donations come from a mix of employees and the company’s political action committees — $2.89 million flowed to campaigns from BP-related PACs and about $638,000 came from individuals.”

I don’t think this will hurt the Obama Administration now but it doesn’t bode well for Obama’s 2012 re-election fundraising.

  1. i wonder what the talking points to spin this story will be?

  2. BP is big on government setting up and controlling the energy market. The less competition, the better. Easier to spend some money on a few politicians that write the rules and details of the laws than deal with the hoi polloi.

Their little green logo came out as part of the “alternative energy” message a few years back and their chairman, Mr. Brown, spouted all the nonsense a leftist or statist politician could want.

You can bet if there is a large subsidy out there, they have paid to get in line for it. My instinct is that they were active in carving out a nice chunk of cap&tax credits as part of the donation pattern.

  3. Glenn Beck mentioned today that following the Exxon Valdez spill there has been a decades old US law requiring a federal spill management plan be in place along with the assets to execute it (like booms and flame barriers). About 1 year ago the Obama administration waived the requirements to have booms on hand. They had to go shopping for booms starting after the spill occurred. Wanna bet we won’t be hearing about THAT from Brian Williams, et al.
