Arizona Deputy Reportedly Shot With AK-47

A Phoenix-area deputy attempting a remote drug bust was reportedly shot with an AK-47 (via My Fox Phoenix):

“A Pinal County sheriff’s deputy is recovering after he’s shot by a group of suspected illegal immigrants and drug smugglers Friday during patrol south of Phoenix.

It happened during patrol on the I-8 west of Casa Grande and south of Phoenix. The deputy radioed in to report he was shot in the abdomen with an AK-47 assault rifle while in a desert area, Pinal County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Tamatha Villar says.

Villar says the deputy found several bales of marijuana and approached a group of five suspected illegal immigrants when he was shot. Two of the five suspects were armed.”

The first link is to GatewayPundit who embeds video from the Fox affiliate of officials assisting the deputy. An update adds this statement from an area resident:

“Our retirement home is in AZ City—right next to Casa Grande. This “incident” occurred in the vicinity of Hwy’s 8 & 84—less then 10 miles from our house. We were there over the weekend returning Tuesday. Monday night—while driving on Hwy 10—-we saw several police in hot pursuit—-and they ended up surrounding a house in our development less then a half mile from our house. So, all I have to say about all those idiot libs, Hollywood dopes, etc, etc………what about our US rights? Who is going to protect us from this violence? How can we ever relax in our retirement home? Will our property value ever recover given our house is located in this major smuggling/mayhem war zone? Maybe the government should buy our property to house the border patrol and/or national guard? Anybody who objects to us wanting our protection under US law ought to put some of their own lives or property on the line. Or, let them start a fund to buy back our property.”

The wounded deputy was identified as Deputy Louie Puroll, 53, who “had a chunk of skin torn from just above his left kidney, but the wound was not serious.” It took over an hour to find Deputy Puroll.

  1. shot with an AK-47?? aren’t they illegal?

  2. Who cares if it was an AK-47 or not? Are they calling for an assault rifle ban or something? Why would they even mention that?

  4. Hmmm, should I engage, especially with so many people more knowledgable than I? No, I won’t.

Sounds like the deputy was lucky. I guess things are scattered far and wide enough he didn’t have the luxury of waiting for backup. One against 5 odds discussing ownership of 2 bales of marijuana doesn’t sound good.

The longer people put up flak against more serious action against the insecurity of the border and the more these things happen, the worse the eventual backlash will be- either that or all that will be left are criminals and those who couldn’t sell their houses in time.

nk- I would like two of those, the light blue and the pretty orange and yellow ones.

Mr. Hooten, if it was pointed at you, you would care.

  5. People would largely support cracking down on violent assholes like this if it didn’t mean rounding up peaceful hard-working folks based on the mere suspicion that they are not registered with the proper bureaucracy. Also, using this incident to justify heavy-handed measures against people who are the most victimized by drug smugglers and gang bangers is kind of crude.

Mass illegal immigration is essentially a result of our immigration laws making it nearly impossible for low-skilled workers to get in here legally with the proper documentation. Make it easier to come here legally and you’ll see a lot of the secondary criminal acitivies associated with it go down.

  6. Our quota system is outdated and grossly unfair. Not only did we cap the number of people granted citizenship each year in the 1970s, when immigration rates were much lower, we impose a per-country cap. That means that Iceland, a country of 300,000 people, and Mexico, a country of 106 million, get the same number of legal immigrants to the U.S. each year.

We restrict the types of people whom we let immigrate based on employment. Each year, the U.S. grants 140,000 employment-based green cards, but these go primarily to high-skilled workers. We grant a mere 5,000 green cards to unskilled laborers.

  7. If we had closed the “gun show loophole” this would never have happened! /sarcasm off/

  8. Mayor Daley thinks that if AZ just had tougher gun control laws then unfortunate incidents like these would never happen.

    Dmac (21311c)

  9. Dmac – Mayor Daley is probably absolutely right. Instead of these weak ass laws we have right now, if we passed some tough stuff, the criminal types would prolly decide it was just not worth the risk of committing any gun-related crimes.

  10. Today’s LA Times says it was only a superficial wound that was “sure to inflame passions” in Arizona.

I would like to see an AK-47 tear a chunk of flesh off that writer’s stomach and see how he would change his opinion of the shooting.

    Have a Happy Che Day.

  11. High velocity missiles like the .223 round can damage internal organs from the shock wave even if they do not penetrate. I suspect the docs treating that deputy will keep him under observation a couple of days.

We drive right past that site ever two weeks or so on the way to Tucson. My daughter drove to Tucson Sunday afternoon but she has been told to only use the I 10 which avoids that lonely stretch of I 8, especially at night.

AJB is either a DNC plant or has been reading the LA Times again. No normal person would get so many things wrong otherwise.

  12. #6,
Unskilled workers are able to immigrate legally. My wife and her family did.

With unemployment over 10%, 25% for teenagers, why do we need to import unskilled workers? Are our immigration policies supposed to serve America’s interests or Mexico’s?

    Machinist (9780ec)

  13. Why should we care about the other country’s population when assigning immigration quotas. It’s how many come here that effects us. Again, our policies should serve OUR needs, not those of other countries.

We don’t elect leaders to represent Mexico or Venezuela.

    Machinist (9780ec)

  14. OMG – please don’t giv’um more ideas. I can see it now – the Venezuelan, Cuban, and Mexican official representatives to Congress.

On the good side, however, maybe then Grijalva et al can actually repesent U.S. interests.

  15. the thousands of murderers, rapists, robbers, drug dealers/smugglers,kidnappers,pedophiles,etc. are the husbands and brothers of the so called innocent motel maids. and yard workers who show up at emergency rooms demanding free medical care and schools demanding bilingual education.

  16. Was Pinal County the county where the Sheriff called the new law “stupid” and stated he would not enforce it? Or was that Pina County?

  19. I think the AK shoots a 7.62 round which maybe is like a .30 caliber.
Whatever. The cop got shot in the love handle by a criminal with a rifle.
This person seems to have entered the country illegally with the purpose of furthering a crime spree that culminated in the shooting of a law enforcement officer.

  20. Just wondering, by chance has Kos weighed in on this yet? Like with a heartfelt “f@ck ‘im” with respect to the wounded deputy?

    elissa (dd0e5c)

  21. WHO is the genius who provided any evidence whatever that the rifle was an AK 47?

We are only informed that “The deputy radioed in to report he was shot in the abdomen with an AK-47 assault rifle”.

So he was that close to the shooter? And the shooter didn’t finish the job, and just let the deputy walk away?

Before anyone begins yammering about ‘assault rifles’, or more lurid assertions of the brand and model of the actual weapon, can we have some more certain evidence than that assertion provided by the excited, terrified but damn-lucky, shootee?

    Insufficiently Sensitive (8906ed)

  22. The AK 47 has a signature sound and rhythm. A trained officer can probably tell as well as a liberal can distinguish between rap songs.

Would you feel less sympathy for the officer if a common .38 caliber was used to shoot him?

Or do you have anger at the officer because he is slowing down the flow of drugs into your community?

    Arizona Bob (e8af2b)

  23. Machinist:

With unemployment over 10%, 25% for teenagers, why do we need to import unskilled workers?

I’ve decided liberals don’t want kids to work. It’s much easier to guide their thinking when they are in public schools and colleges than when they work part-time, and it’s easier to get them hooked on credit via school loans, too.

    DRJ (d15e92)

  24. 11.High velocity missiles like the .223 round can damage internal organs from the shock wave even if they do not penetrate.

Yeah, high velocity rounds like the .223 can do that.

But if the weapon was an AK-47, we’re talking about the 7.62x39mm Russian, which everyone who knows anything about guns is in the .30-30 class of cartridges. Hardly high-velocity, as defined these days.

Of course, if it was an AK-74, then your comments apply.

    Steve (9a21f4)

  25. I guess that makes the genius the officer… until he says different

    Steve G (7d4c78)

  26. Bandidos from south of the border are not known for picking up their brass.
A little “policing” of the area could have recovered spent brass, which would have been determinant of the caliber of the rifle.
He, the Deputy, got lucky. Perhaps he will now consider a more comprehensive selection of body armor?
How much more of this $hit has to go down before the “Great White Father” decides to do his Constitutional duty,
and to protect the citizens of the United States (and Arizona) from all enemies, foreign and domestic?
