Obama Doesn’t Quit, Except When He Does

From Mark Finkelstein at Newsbusters:

“The United States of America does not quit once it starts on something. You don’t quit, the American armed services does not quit. We keep at it. We persevere.”
Pres. Obama to US troops in Afghanistan, March 28, 2010.

“Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is calling for the immediate withdrawal of all U.S. combat brigades from Iraq, with the pullout being completed by the end of next year. ‘Let me be clear: There is no military solution in Iraq and there never was,’ Obama said.”
Obama calls for immediate withdrawal from Iraq, AP, Sep. 12, 2007.

  1. He will never quit trying to please his leftist masters; therefore, he will never quit talking about winning the so-called “justified” war.

  2. He’s starting the withdrawal next year is he not, or am I missing something here?

    ian cormac (349188)

  3. I think DRJ’s point is that, under an Obama administration, we selectively persevere.

    Icy Texan (192cb4)

  4. Except you conveniently forget the Afghanistan surge. So your criticism is invalid.

    JEA (b29a48)

  5. What, you expected consistency from this man from one day to the next? Silly you.

    Mike Myers (3c9845)

  6. Actually, to give credit where credit is due, President Obama didn’t just immediately pull out of Iraq when he took office, as he could have done. It almost seems like President Obama, having the actual responsibility for our defense and national security, has a bit different attitude than Senator Obama, who could say anything he wanted, given that he was responsible for nothing.

  7. 4, Except that Dumbo had to be dragged kicking and screaming to meet his own hand picked General, and after months of dithering, he didn’t give the General the minimum he requested.

  8. well, this kind of thing is old hat. mark steyn had a great column on how democrats generally reserve the rhetoric of war for domestic politics. The War Room, a clinton era documentary, was about winning an election; but bill clinton didn’t see terribly interested in going to the war room except maybe to take women there when he didn’t want his mistresses to know he was cheating on them.

Of course Obama does know how to get tough and call for regime change… with isreal. and to deal with nuclear proliferation… in russia. you know, i am glad russia will have less nukes, honestly, but frankly of all the countries that scare me in relation to nukes, russia is actually surprisingly low on the list.

  9. Except you conveniently forget the Afghanistan surge which Obama finally agreed to, in watered down fashion, after putting political considerations above the mission, So your criticism is entirely invalid.

  11. anyone see the articles blasting Obama for this patently political ploy of making a trip to a warzone? ah, that’s right, it was just Bush that got accused of trying to boost his pathetic ratings.

    steve sturm (369bc6)

  12. Steve: I heard he fed a plastic turkey to the troops. Spread the word.

    Sean P (334463)

  13. I think we should give Obama some props for making an unannounced, surprise trip to visit the troops. It was very Bush-like of him.

Seriously, though, it was a classy maneuver, and I applaud him for it.

  14. I couldn’t help but be reminded of the old, and now very politically incorrect joke, about Tonto and the Lone Ranger being surrounded by thousands of angry Comanche warriors screaming for blood, prompting the Lone Ranger to say to Tonto, “We’ve had a good, long run, my friend, but I think we’re finally done for,” whereupon Tonto reportedly said: “What’s this ‘we’ business … white man?” Yes, Obama was correct that the American military never quits. He, of course, has never spent a day in uniform, nor, prior to his presidential campaign, ever shown a conspicuous tenacity at anything.

  15. There you go, picking at that nasty, Democrat-Leftist, soft on National Security scab again.
I mean, it’s not like he’s Jimmah Carter, or Michael Dukakis; he isn’t that resolute.

    Big difference.

  18. Now, now, Beldar – you’re being a tad harsh !

“He, of course, has never spent a day in uniform, nor, prior to his presidential campaign, ever shown a conspicuous tenacity at anything.
    – The One spends most of his time in uniform – the uniform of a Chicago pol, does he not ? And has he not shown conspicuous tenacity in regularly throwing anyone and everyone inconvenient to him under the proverbial bus ?

And snips, in his (her?) own way, sorta has it correct … as Senator, The One didn’t suggest that we quit – au contrary, he valiantly championed the cause of the strategic advance produly rearwards, did he not ?

BREAKING NEWS.- OBAMA JUST CANCELLED AN EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR MILITARY SPOUSES BECAUSE OF AN HIGHER THAN EXPECTED RESPONSE CAUSED IT TO GO OVER ITS 65 MILLION BUDGET.maybe all those military hating profs do not want ROTC, GI BILL,OR DEMUR DAMSELS in the room while they are demonizing the the military.could they not use some of those BILLIONS that was in the budget for ACORN?

    That’s a victory for somebody.

    “Mission Accomplished” – May 1, 2003

    JEA (b29a48)

  28. Actually, I consider the “mission accomplished” moment to be true. The clean-up stage in Iraq began after that.

Ever notice the vertical bars on the jeeps after WWII was won and over? Ever find out why they were there? If you’re like JEA and you never learned anything about that, you really should study to show yourself approved. Either that, or just shut up.

    John Hitchcock (352725)

  30. Hey is snips actually a sock puppet for someone else?

It can’t be the banned one, Harpo, can it?

    SacTownMan (b2c998)

  31. I was amused at how many times Barky told the troops that Americans never quit. It was like he was telling himself over and over to try to sound sincere, or perhaps he was trying out a new message for Axelturf to send to his core anti-war base.

And I doubt the troops are worrying about Americans quitting – it’s the Democrats they no doubt worry about!
