Obama’s Plan to Sell Health Care

[Guest post by DRJ]

The Washington Post outlines how President Obama plans to sell the American people on health care and continued Democratic leadership:

“President Obama is set to begin an immediate public relations blitz aimed at turning around Americans’ opinion of the health-care bill, assuming the House passes it, White House officials said Sunday afternoon as they waited for the final votes.
***
Reshaping the legislation’s image will take place in three phases, aides said: the immediate aftermath; the seven months until the November midterm elections; and the several years that follow, during which many provisions in the measure will gradually take effect.

Driving the message during those periods is the belief among Obama’s top advisers that Republicans have boxed themselves into a corner with unanimous opposition to the legislation and talk of a repeal.

“We truly believe that Republicans have way overshot the runway in their criticism of it,” one top White House official said.”

Shorter WaPo: Obama 24/7 for the next 7 months.

Between now and November, American voters can mobilize to tell Washington what they think about the Democrats’ choices for health care and government. I don’t know what voters will decide but I hope their message is clear.

Could they truly be so stupid as to think that there’s more undiscovered good than undiscovered bad in this bill?

  2. Wait a minute. Wasn’t it just last week that the Dems were preaching about SASA (short attention span Americans), saying this will be forgotten by November? How can SASA help them if they keep reminding SASA about it?

  3. We will call him out on his false PR claims about this flawed legislation.

  4. Obama got a 7 point jump on gallup. 5 on Rasmussen’s (admittedly idiotic) “presidential approval index.” So the GOP will be running against this?

  5. I’m pretty sure that Obama will have all the media in his pocket, as usual. Never mind the things that take effect immediately were things that everyone though should happen (e.g. not canceling policies when people get sick), and the horrors waiting in the wings (giant tax increases, forced purchase of expensive insurance, etc) will be ignored.

  6. The “More Cowbell” theory. It will be a failure. With a concrete text, Obama will not get away with anymore of his misrepresentations of what the legislation is about.

  7. There is a poll coming that will be final. We used to have a saying in racing sailboats long distance. There was a tendency for competitors to exaggerate their position. We once had a competing boat in the Transpac report themselves 50 miles in front of us when we could see them abeam.

The saying was “The Danforth doesn’t lie.” The Danforth is the anchor. When you are anchored and the other guy comes into the harbor, both of you know who won and who lost. Bragging does no good.

In November, the Danforth will tell us who won and who lost.

That works both ways. Death panels open for business tomorrow.

  10. Don’t be surprised if Dems do get a bump in poll numbers in the immediate aftermath of this. Keep in mind that a lot of the people who are against ObamaCare think that it doesn’t go far enough. They range from the single payer groupies to the public option advocates.

I think that the Obamabots have it exactly wrong here. Sure, the garden variety Dems who had reservations about this bill will get aboard and support vs. opposition will go back to roughly 50/50 in the short term. The long-term prognosis is, however, where the bill will start to become less popular. When the taxes hit well before the new coverage models, when the first large employer announces that they are abandoning their traditional private coverage and sending their employees into the government pool, when the details of how massive this program will be and how many new bureaucrats will have to be hired to administer it, that is when this plan will begin to slip further and further down in popularity. Let’s hope the GOP can harness this discontent and put a stop to all this nonsense before it is too late.

  11. No, imdw, that does not work “both ways” because each time the Democrats have tried to pretend that a criticism was wrong, they got caught out.

That includes your habit of trying to bring up the same talking point over and over regardless of being caught out.

  12. Another question: it’s one thing to support Obamacare in the abstract, but how dumb does a Democrat have to be to think that the health care THEY receive is going to improve? Or that they’re not going to end up paying more money in taxes and higher premiums?

do all these young enthusiastic liberals not realize their premiums are going to go up? do they really think that they’re not going to have to wait to get an appointment? or that their employer is likely to fire THEM (or someone just like them) to compensate for the higher costs? or do they just not care?

When grandma’s medicare is stopped and TV cameras show illegal aliens getting care in the ER. When 20% of physicians decide to retire early. When the number of abortions jump 20 percent. When the paint starts peeling in your hospital room and the sheets are old and shredded. When nurses no longer give a (#*&

  15. Shorter WaPo: Obama 24/7 for the next 7 months.

If that doesn’t work, they can always burn down a Reichstag or two.

Oh, and just wait till everyone’s premiums jump 100% in the next 4 years to accomodate all the new sick “protected” people.

  16. A curious coincidence dated March 19, 2010:

“U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) announced three airports in northern Michigan have received grants totaling $726,409 for airport maintenance and improvements. The funding was provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Aviation Administration.”

It’s the least they could do since Stupak’s health care fight was a “living hell.”

  18. Wow, he sold out for less than a million bucks. I bet the WH is laughing at him.

Nah, when Stupak loses his reelection bid he will be appointed one of the head bureaucrats in the new world of ObamaCare. It will be interesting to see how many defeated Dems suddenly end up with jobs in this Administration. After all, government is the only sector that seems to be hiring anymore.

That’s the problem and that’s the solution. Everybody thinks this is some kind of party fight.

That’s why I’ve always found imdw’s arguments so funny, when I know he’s so serious.
