Grats to Northern Iowa. And a pox on Kansas for losing and destroying my bracket.
NJRob (2a430b) — 3/20/2010 @ 4:27 pmNeener, neener, neener!
My mother got her Masters in Child Psychology from UNI.
Go Panthers!
Technomad (e2c0f2) — 3/20/2010 @ 4:30 pmI updated the post with another upset.
DRJ (daa62a) — 3/20/2010 @ 5:08 pmGreat win for…. who was that? Oh yeas, Northern Iowa!!! Very exciting finish. I tend to root for the underdogs so I was glad to see N.Iowa beat a “the” number 1 seed. I hope they keep going.
J. Raymond Wright (e8d0ca) — 3/20/2010 @ 5:51 pmMush!! (i.e., go Huskies)
sherlock (c70795) — 3/20/2010 @ 6:07 pmIt causes me great pain to see Bill Selfish lose.
St Mary’s was a big upset too.
JD (07b76c) — 3/20/2010 @ 6:51 pmWe are styling and profiling in Iowa tonight!!!!
PCD (fed6fd) — 3/20/2010 @ 7:20 pmThat reminds me of Ric Flair, PCD, so here’s a Woo!
DRJ (daa62a) — 3/20/2010 @ 7:29 pmUnlike so many other schools in the tourney every year that I’ve never heard of, I didn’t have to ask where the heck is UNI. At least after I found out what UNI stood for.
Paul (b28434) — 3/20/2010 @ 7:54 pmHere in San Francisco, KPIX-TV sports anchor Dennis O’Donnell hosts the post-game show on tourney nights. He began the segment about the Northern Iowa win with showing ESPN video of Obama choosing Kansas to win it all. O’Donnell then said of NIU sharpshooting guard Ali Farokhmanesh (whose 3-pt shot sealed the victory) “He must be a Republican!”
O’Donnell wound the highlights up as video rolled of the jubilant NIU players dancing on the court with this: “The President is gonna win health care, but his bracket is busted!”
Fair warning: If California defeats Duke tomorrow and reaches the Sweet 16, expect a pantload of media attention to be slung the way of Bears forward Jamal Boykin, who is obsessed with Obama. I’m not overstating that — he is a talented illustrator and has spent endless hours creating portraits of Obama and his family. Boykin had his Obama art displayed in a Berkeley art gallery last spring.
L.N. Smithee (eb3307) — 3/20/2010 @ 8:31 pmOopsy! I guess it’s “UNI,” not “NIU”.
L.N. Smithee (eb3307) — 3/20/2010 @ 8:35 pmThat “He must be a Republican!” is funny, LN. Thanks for sharing it.
DRJ (daa62a) — 3/20/2010 @ 9:09 pmFine Host’s alma mater beat Temple in R1; about time the Ivies did something in the tournament. Well done, Cornell!
(Penn nearly beat Memphis St. when I was there, but: 1. They didn’t, because of stupid coaching decision not to go 4-corners up nine, and 2. Memphis State was probably only behind because they, um, needed a shave.)

JRM (9f4662) — 3/21/2010 @ 8:48 amAnd the University of Kentucky Wildcats utterly destroyed the Wake Forest Demean Deacons, 90-60. Trouble is, it was such a rout that CBS switched most of the areas which had that game — and we were one of them — to Kansas State-Brigham Young, which seemed more competitive, even though BYU, trailing the entire second half, never was able to close the gap.
I was displeased.
The University of Kentucky alumnus Dana (474dfc) — 3/21/2010 @ 9:18 amWisconsin went down to Cornell, too.
PCD (1d8b6d) — 3/22/2010 @ 6:59 amDRJ, next you’ll be getting me to tell my run ins with Bobby “The Brain” Heenan.
Or the crush I had on the Crusher’s daughter.
PCD (1d8b6d) — 3/22/2010 @ 11:11 amWhat a great weekend of basketball. Locally, Butler made it to the Sweet 16 again, doing things the right way. Unfortunately for them, The ‘Cuse looks like they re-learned how to play.
Cornell is really fun to watch.
Kansas losing was one of the few bright spots of this horrific weekend.
Dana – Enjoy it while you can. Probation and sanctions will follow shortly. It is the Calipari way.
JD (3b62be) — 3/22/2010 @ 11:18 amPCD-
Yes, I noted that. I would have commented previously had there not been more tragic news to deal with yesterday.
I had not seen enough of Wisconsin basketball this season to understand them. They beat Duke and Purdue (when they had all of their starters) at home, then lost to Ill to break their 55 game home win streak against unranked teams. I know in their game with Ill. in the Big 10 tournament they looked terrible in the first half (“the worst I’ve ever seen Wisconsin play”, said the announcer) but then came back and alomost pulled it off at the end.
I guess Cornell has a 7-footer that must have gotten better as the season has gone on.
Still waiting to see what the Frozen Four is going to look like.
MD in Philly (59a3ad) — 3/22/2010 @ 11:24 amMD – My Illini were streaky, very good and very bad, wild fluctuations.
JD (3b62be) — 3/22/2010 @ 11:43 amI guess Obama wanted to come and share the good vibe at UNI, but Dumbo is going to the U of I. Maybe I can place the Cat from Hell on AF1 as a gift in return for the Health Care Destruction Bill.
