Pelosi Logic

[Guest post by DRJ]

Speaker Nancy Pelosi: “But we have to pass the [health care] bill so that you can find out what is in it.”

And for those who want context:

“You’ve heard about the controversies within the bill, the process about the bill, one or the other. But I don’t know if you have heard that it is legislation for the future, not just about health care for America, but about a healthier America, where preventive care is not something that you have to pay a deductible for or out of pocket. Prevention, prevention, prevention—it’s about diet, not diabetes. It’s going to be very, very exciting.

But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy. Furthermore, we believe that health care reform, again I said at the beginning of my remarks, that we sent the three pillars that the President’s economic stabilization and job creation initiatives were education and innovation—innovation begins in the classroom—clean energy and climate, addressing the climate issues in an innovative way to keep us number one and competitive in the world with the new technology, and the third, first among equals I may say, is health care, health insurance reform. Health insurance reform is about jobs. This legislation alone will create 4 million jobs, about 400,000 jobs very soon.

We must have the courage, though, to get the job done. We have the ideas. We have the commitment. We have the dedication. We know the urgency. Now we have to have the courage to get the job done. So proud that President Obama is taking the message so forcefully to the American people! This is long overdue, a hundred years.”

So last week’s report about the Democrats’ newest strategy was true: Anyone against health care is a chicken.

  1. Anyone against health care is a chicken.

which is a good thing, since the taxes and j*b loss this disaster will bring will ensure that there won’t be a chicken in anyone’s pot.

  6. Why can’t Republicans offer amendments the same way? You know, just hand Pelosi a blank piece of paper and ask if she will lend her bipartisan support for the Help the Children initiative, and then after the fact inform her it was a national voucher program.

  8. Nancy has long ago forgotten, if she ever knew, what this is all about. Health care is forgotten and of no concern to these apparatchiks. This is about the nomenklatura and the proletariat. Guess which we are.

  9. This “after we pass it you’ll find out what’s in it and you’ll learn to love it” business sort of worries me a little bit. I mean, honestly, Nancy doesn’t look all that trustworthy.

  12. “But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it …”

That simple line, probably not intended the way it came out, says so much.

Everyone can choose up sides and argue back and forth about what this party is doing and what that party isn’t or what that guy will do or what the other guy won’t.

And we can all go on and on about who is right and who is wrong.

    It really doesn’t matter.

The daughter of a Baltimore pol went away to the Golden State and found a place where she can reign immortal.

And we find ourselves where many, if not most, find comfort in the words:

“..we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy.”

I made a joke on this board a few days ago about Pelosi. I said she looked like an HR director, with the caveat that it was probably just me.

Of course, I was taken to task by another commentator that said she looked like the Speaker of the House.

I was wrong in making the joke. She is the Speaker of the House.

And if that that simple sentence, uttered by the Speaker of the House doesn’t frighten you, then you can look at it two ways:

The Government will take care of us.

    or

The Government will take care of me.

  16. America, this bill is like a box of chocolates. We won’t find out what’s in it until we pass it and bite into it.

    Nancy P.

Is this a great country or what?

    Comment by daleyrocks — 3/9/2010 @ 11:48 pm

  17. It’s not that hard to find out what’s in this bill. But there is a lot of misdirection. Once it is passed it will become much harder to lie about it, and its effects will be more concrete.

Plus rush limbaugh will leave the country.

  25. “It’s all the fault of the reich-wing media and big corporations! If only those fat-cats were not in the bag for the Rethuglicans, the truth could get out to the American people!”

I don’t think its a question of being ‘in the bag’ for one side or the other. I think it’s more that their model is of a ‘he said / she said.’

Lots of things you buy come with a shrinkwrap license that you can only read once you open the box.

  36. Lots of things you buy come with a shrinkwrap license that you can only read once you open the box.

And there’s a fair argument to be made that the shrinkwrap license is not enforceable. You weren’t aware of it when you purchased the item, and it adds nothing to the value of the item you bought.

Aside from that, your point is irrelevant anyway.
