Eric Boehlert Gets in His Time Machine to Blame the Right for Democrat Bedell

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:10 am

Eric Boehlert has found the cause for John Patrick Bedell’s 2006 rant against President Bush: the rhetoric from Tea Parties in 2009 and 2010.

Recall that Bedell, a registered Democrat, described the Bush Administration in 2006 as a “collection of gangsters” that initiated the war in Iraq “in order to divert attention from their misconduct and criminality.”

We crazy conservative bloggers think: hmmmm. 9/11 Truther, anti-Bush nut, and registered Democrat. Maybe this is one guy they won’t try to blame on us. Maybe for once they’ll call a lunatic a lunatic and leave it at that.

But Eric Boehlert knows who is to blame:

Sorry, right-wingers, but you fostered this toxic environment. You’re the ones who rally around Rush Limbaugh when he calls the president of the United States a Nazi. You’re the ones who cheer when Glenn Beck compares our commander in chief to a dangerous, Hitler-like tyrant who wants to “take your gun away one way or another.”

Indeed. Because in 2006, when Bush was president, there was no toxic anti-Bush environment.

Nobody called Bush or right-wingers Nazis. Except for these folks:

Mainstream commentary featured Nazi references too. Both Senator Robert Byrd and billionaire Democrat George Soros said Bush reminded them of Herman Goering.

During the 2004 presidential campaign, Al Gore used the term “brownshirts” (Nazi street thugs) to refer to Republican computer teams assigned to respond to criticism of Bush and the Iraq war.

Vanity Fair magazine nominated Richard Perle for the Goebbels role, running photos of both men under the headline “Separated at Birth?”

New York Times columnist Frank Rich managed to work in a reference to a famous Nazi filmmaker. He said a Showtime program on 9/11 was so favorable to Bush that it is “best viewed as a fitting memorial to Leni Riefenstahl.”

The Rev. Andrew Greeley, sociologist and novelist, depicted Bush as a Hitler figure who carried American over to “the dark side.”

During the Bush years, there were no gatherings of lefties calling for violence against Bush. Except for all of these. Here’s one example from many at the link, which is to Zombie:

You’ve nailed it, Eric Boehlert. Another brilliant column.

P.S. Hey, can we borrow your time machine? There’s a certain election from 2008 I’d like to undo. Thanks!

  1. Funny, although I viewed all of the usual suspects among the photos, I didn’t see any of the Phelp’s zombie’s signs in that collection. Nor any of the giant heads, either.

  2. All y’all know media matters, imdw, timb, wheeler’s cat and other liberal trolls are zombie proof. They don’t have brains for the zombies to eat.

  3. Remember when Rush Limbaugh said during the Clinton years that the motto in the White House must be “How do we fool them today?” At Media Matters, Think Progress, Daily POS, Mediaite.com, Gawker, and the rest of the lefty blogosphere, their credo is “How do we smear them today?” referring to everything right-of-center.

Here a hack, there a hack, everywhere a hack hack. It never ceases to amaze me how low they can sink. It would be comical if it was not a deadly serious business that enriches people like Bull-alert, David Brock, and their fellow travelers generously.

  4. So they are hypocritical scum bags? What is new?

  5. I think that Boehlert is the veritable poster child for the Leftist credo (that so irritates relativists and equivalicists): “...that’s different!

Because when Boehlert’s pals do something, it is pretty much good, or at least the fault of the Right.

    Nutjob.

  6. Has Boehlert even acknowledged the ACORN charges in Wisconsin?

  7. Pat, here’s one you missed: CNN’s Susan Roesgen reporting from New Orleans in 2006, blithely making note of a protester wearing a GWB mask modified with devil horns and the distinct Adolf Hitler mustache (among Catholic schoolgirls!). That clip is contrasted with Roesgen blowing her cool and showing her bias at that Chicago Tea Party on April 15, 2009 as she expressed personal offense at a pic of BHO with the Hitler ‘stache.

    L.N. Smithee (560109)

  8. Those weren’t charges against ACORN. ACORN’s such a large organization, it is bound to have a bad apple every once in a while. Just look at Sears & Roebuck. At least one employee per store has been indicted for a felony while doing his or her job improperly.

  9. There is a version of selective amnesia that occurs on the left. We, of course, are victims of “false consciousness” because we still don’t accept the wondrous plans they have for all of us. Now, if money grew on trees, as my mother used to say. I wonder what their mothers said that gave them the idea that it did ?

    Mike K (2cf494)

  10. But, Mike K, money does indeed grow on trees. And is buried in the ground. Where do you think we get paper and ink?

  11. Double standards and blatant hypocricy is the coin of the realm of the left.

Look at Dan Rather. Selling watermelons? Not a racist comment. Anti Obama posters comparing Obama to Heath Ledgers Joker? Blatant racism. Mike Wallace claiming that “Blacks and Hispanics were too busy eating watermelons and tacos to read the fine print on their insurance policies”? Not racist. Tea party protesters in 2009 waving signs that say “take America back”? Racist. Lefties in 2003-2008 waiving signs that say “take America back”? Not racist. I could do this all day, I really could.

The latest is that calling Charlie Rangel a “corrupt Harlem Democrat” is “racially tinged” (David Shuster). I say that the correct term should instead be used: “Corrupt Hymietown Democrat.”

    L.N. Smithee (b048eb)

  13. LN – Facts are racially tinged? Shuster is a poofter.

  14. 10, John, Mike K can be excused here. He and I were traumatized by Robert Citron bankrupting Orange County with his schemes.

    PCD (1d8b6d)

  15. Mike K — if money DID grow on trees, the lefties would be in favor of clear-cutting the forests with the biggest ones.

  16. Why are we still talking about this P.O.S., Eric Boehlert?
    Why should we care?
    I know that I certainly don’t.

Because the Limbaugh’s and Beck’s of the left never called Bush “Hitler” or a Nazi. Or something.

Once a commie, always a commie. The habit of rewriting history dies hard.

  18. But John Hitchcock, those of us in the US don’t use paper from trees, we use a high quality rag paper from cotton fibers. Admittedly if trends continue we might have to switch to a lower-quality wood-pulp paper sometime in the future and perhaps cut down to only printing on one side like Zimbabwe does.

  20. Does Boehlert wear a pimp outfit when he writes that crap for Soros?

    daleyrocks (718861)

  21. daley – Boehlert is the who-er, not the pimp.

    JD (0f9c01)

  22. JD – Right. Soros is the top. Boehlert is the bottom.

  24. I would really be worried about this, if I knew who Eric Boehlert was.

Is this insect significant? Does he have the huge following of an Ed Schultz or Rachel Maddow?

All of whom, if they commented here, would just about add up to the number of comments preceding mine.

    Steve (7d8b00)

  25. The Boehlerts of the world are idiots.

I’d say Steve was right in #24 above, except this: truth will out, sometimes requiring us to correct The Narrative. Correcting The Narrative are EXACTLY why the internet serves us so very very well.
