A Sea Change for America

Yesterday, Hot Air featured a Dartmouth student’s blog post that explains why there could be a 60 seat swing in the House of Representatives this November. Both the Hot Air post and the student’s blog post are worth reading — proving once again that it’s not who you are but the merit of your arguments that matter on the internet.

Anecdotal evidence of this transformation also appears in today’s New York Times The Caucus blog:

“For the first time since 1984, Representative Rick Boucher of Virginia will face a serious Republican challenge, possibly jeopardizing his 28-year Democratic stronghold on the Appalachian district and sending his office into campaign mode earlier than ever before.

Republican Morgan Griffith, the majority leader of the state House of Delegates, made his campaign official Tuesday as state Republicans went live with RetireRick.com, a Web site highlighting Mr. Boucher’s early support for President Obama and the administration’s policies. Already, two Web advertisements slam Mr. Boucher for his support of the auto bailouts and the House cap-and trade-bill.

“Rick Boucher went to Washington 27 years ago to fight for us,” one post reads. “How’s he doing lately? Is he fighting for southwest Virginia, or for the agenda of President Obama?”

Barack Obama said change was coming and if these early indications are correct, he was right. Americans are united once again … united against his policies.

  2. I don’t think transformation is the right word. It’s a combination of angry Americans and demoralized socialists. But it doesn’t say anything affirmative about Team R I don’t think.

  3. While the end result may be the same, I caution against claiming the American people are ‘against his policies’.

I think it is more accurate to say that most people (excepting the very informed and opinionated people who visit this site) don’t know – or care about – the specifics of what Obama is doing, they just know Obama hasn’t produced the results they like and it is this unhappiness with the end result (as opposed to the process by which it was obtained) that is driving voters back to the GOP.

Put another way, voters are unhappy because the economy sucks, because house prices aren’t going up, because they worry about losing their job and not having anything for retirement. If, on the other hand, the economy was growing, they would be happy and wouldn’t care in the least about the specifics of what Obama was or wasn’t doing. As I have said before, the public doesn’t care about the way of getting there, they only care that they get the end result.

Of course, I realize Obama’s policies are not conducive to a growing economy, so in a way his policies are to blame for his poor showing.

  4. Oh my. That young man was the chair of his district’s Get Out the Vote for the Democrats. He sees the writing on the wall.

  5. steve, I know you’re right, but I think part of the problem is that Obama promised a lot of ridiculous results, too. Mccain’s drab dull ‘country first’ campaign didn’t promise to increase entitlements and cut the deficit and cut taxes and stop the oceans from rising and win our wars quickly and bloodlessly.

Obama was hyped. Every time I drink a Pepsi and Brittney Spears doesn’t jump out of the can and give me a table dance, I am devastated.

  8. Although Obama promised ridiculous results, I think a lot of the backlash is against Obama’s policies: nationalizing everything he can get his hands on; appeasing every dictator on the public scene; apologizing to our enemies; healthcare, healthcare, healthcare; civilian trials for enemy combatants; did I mention healthcare?
