The Austin American-Statesman golf blog Backspin posts a desert golf photo and is asking for captions. I don’t know a good caption but I’d sure like to know what this guy was doing.

  19. My guess is that when lining up for a shot, he backed into a jumping cactus (Cylindropuntia fulgida) aka hanging chain cholla, and wisely yelled for help! (Maybe a Teddy bear cholla but they’re cousins.) I’ve always used a stick to brush them off, but the very heavy gloves might work.

  24. Yes, what PCD said. Lots more cussing, though.

That picture brought back memories of some really incredibly painful events from my youth…

This doesn’t look like teddy bear cholla, which would be even worse (longer spines with nastier barbs). Cholla can’t be just yanked-out as the spines are like hundreds of little incredibly painful harpoons hat anchor clothing to flesh, and flesh to muscle when they are deep enough.

When you hike in the desert, you keep a comb (to flick the cholla links away), tweezers and a roll of tape (to adhear to the glochids – very fine, painful spines that stick to everything) in your kit for these kinds of close encounters.

My bet is he belted a ball under a stand of cholla, and thought he could just bend down and reach underneath the hanging branches. Lucky he didn’t meet the rattlesnakes which also like to hangout in those areas…
