UnderwearGate, etc.

[Guest post by DRJ]

The headline of Toby Harnden’s most recent article on the Christmas Day terrorism by Nigerian Uma Farouk Abdulmutallab onboard Northwest Flight 253:

“Barack Obama is vulnerable on terror –
and he knows it”

Harnden criticizes Obama and his Administration for, among other things, deciding to “play things down and take pot shots at the Bush administration” and for its pattern “of dismissing Islamist terrorist attacks as regrettable random acts.”

Harnden’s thoughts are very good, as are his very British assortment of names for Abdulmutallab’s attack: UnderwearGate, UnderpantsGate, and my personal favorite — the Nigerian Knicker Bomber.

  2. I am betting that the Obama Administration loosened triggers or security screens from where they were during the Bush Administration and that they are furiously spinning to avoid admitting it. We do not have a good explanation for why investigations into Major Nidal Hussein were dropped, the dots not connected on the crotch bomber, Obama’s continued refusal to admit what foe he is facing and mischaracterizations of the extremists as poor and uneducated. He wants to avoid giving the impression of profiling or stigmatizing muslims in word or deed and again, given the passage of time since 9/11, my guess is he ordered loosening of standards and that they want to bury that fact. When the first reaction is to blame the prior administration and look for worse events on their watch, you know you have piss poor leadership in place.

  3. These snippets from a piece written by columnist Charles Krauthammer say it all:

In his first statement, Obama referred to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab as “an isolated extremist.”

This is the same president who, after the Fort Hood, Tex., shooting, warned us “against jumping to conclusions” — code for daring to associate the mass murder there with Nidal Hasan’s Islamist ideology. Yet, with Abdulmutallab, Obama jumped immediately to the conclusion, against all existing evidence, that the would-be bomber acted alone.

More jarring still were Obama’s references to the terrorist as a “suspect” who “allegedly tried to ignite an explosive device.” You can hear the echo of FDR: “Yesterday, December 7, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — Japanese naval and air force suspects allegedly bombed Pearl Harbor.”

The guy currently in the White House truly is a fool.

  7. Again,

This is NOT a criticism of DRJ! Or Anyone and everyone who feels like her but the point I am trying to make is just this

bitching at Obama is only going to entrench him further away from doing the right thing. The stakes are high and I am selfish in this, my daughters are directly in harm way, my wife, my co-workers, my fellow Texans, children I coach and mentor are all flying monthly over Arabia.

mocking this bomber and our governments raction to it is food for recruitment and emboldens the minions of deepest hate that more attacks will divide Americas will even further.

Isnt it easy to see the damaga this is doing? Are we going to lose the capacity to even fly anymore?

we didnt appreciate what the democrats did to GWB – so why are we acting like them?

  13. > The worst incident of American history happened on Bush’s watch. Spin it any way you want, but that’s a fact that even the most vociferous Obama haters cannot deny.

True. It did HAPPEN. The majority of the events leading up to it, however, as Eric notes, were set up as a result of Clinton policies which Bush, with a souring economic situation on his hand, did not get around to analyzing and fixing.

And rest assured — in the unlikely event that Obama gets re-elected, there will be a far, far more significant event on US or Israeli soil — and it will also fall to the next admin if, as is far more likely, Obama get put to pasture after a very long three more years. I expect, barring a revolution in Iran, a nuke will be exploded in NYC, DC, or Tel Aviv within the next 6 years.

And it will be Obama’s fault, regardless of who is “in charge”.

P.S., you, as most residents of Libtardia, project your own rabid partisan hatreds onto the other side. While there are those who do hate Obama as passionately as the Left hated Bush, they hardly represent the mainstream of right/conservative/libertarian views.

We don’t hate Obama — we hate the blatantly obvious policy errors he continually and relentlessly makes because he’s like the rest of you libtards — a self-absorbed, immature, and foolish individual, who cannot learn from mistakes, cannot grasp that evil really does exist, and cannot grasp that decisions don’t occur in a vacuum — one must choose between an array of available alternatives, not the simplistic and childish “Don’t do ‘x'” — ‘x’ may be the best of a bad set of choices.

Hating the policies and actions are not the same thing as hating the man.

So referring to most of the people around here as “Obamahaters” is nothing but a lame ad hominem mental excuse on your part to write off anything you encounter which you don’t like. It doesn’t fool us in the least. We see it for what it is, a cheap write-off on your part which serves the sole purpose of defending your mental constructs against an ever increasng onslaught of real information which leads to one inescapable consclusion: Obama is incompetent, has always been incompetent, and had no business even being considered for the job.

Go on keep your head in the sand. You can go ahead, and, when the mushroom cloud rises over NYC, DC, or Tel Aviv, perhaps only your ass will get singed.

Me? I wish we could collect all you people who got in the way of stopping it from happening could be planted at Ground Zero. Wouldn’t do squat to fix the problem itself, but it sure would do wonders for the aftermath.

As for the “black humour”, “black humour” is a common coping mechanism used to be able to look at very painful things sorta-sidewise rather than directly head-on – thus keeping out of denial while not having to feel the very painful thing directly over and over again …

My own thoughts about the NappyBomber are that he went to the munkar Al Qaeda for training, and was asked what he wanted to do to help the munkar Al Qaeda , and the munkar Al Qaeda folk responded “Depends” … and the rest is history …

    > The worst incident of American history happened on Bush’s watch. Spin it any way you want, but that’s a fact that even the most vociferous Obama haters cannot deny.

Agreed. And I think it is fair to say that for 8 months bush didn’t take terrorism seriously enough. I think that is an absolutely fair criticism. Frankly no president took terrorism seriously enough arguably since Nixon.

Bush learned from that error and proceeded to kick ass. And kept us safe for the remainder of his term.

Obama, meanwhile, apparently did not learn from Bush’s mistakes and let a man who was banned from traveling to the UK, who was being followed by the CIA, whose own father had reported him to be dangerous, get on a plane when with actionable intelligence that someone was going to try to blow up a plane making that exact route on Christmas. There is no spinning that. The government fucked up, and Obama is responsible for it.

Now if this ends up being the shot across the bow that wakes obama up and makes him fix his errors, great. but something tells me that is not in the cards.

  31. Please point to the memo that lessened security procedures

I think you know that what he’s intimating will not be found in an “official” document, but more in the overall attitude of this administration towards the external (and internal) threats facing our country. When you’re involved in the security of the US and you observe terrorists being allowed to lawyer up immediately and afforded rights only accorded previously to US citizens, what does that tell you regarding your leader’s seriousness on this issue?

It all starts from the top down, every time. Napolitano was appointed by Obama, as was Brennan. These vitally important security functions are being headed by deeply unserious people, period.

We found out about Reid’s Al Queda connections, throught the Finsbury Park Mosque link to Moussaoui, some time after incident, Napolitano’s actions were not surprisng considering her statement about the AQ menace from Canada, the DHS report fingering returning vets, and pro lifers, it’s almost beyond satire.

    bishop (cd6b99)

  34. > Please point to the memo that lessened security procedures

Well, there is the one when Obama said that we would not use coercive interrogation methods to gain information. That seems to be a lessened procedure that led to lessened security.

i don’t recall if he put it in a memo or not, but its certainly policy.

And then there was the thing with threatening people who “tortured” for bush with prosecution.

And then there was the thing with treating terrorists like criminals instead of their proper designation: war criminals.

And even in this immediate instance, Obama’s people told the knickerbomber he had a right to remain silent and have respected that. So they aren’t even subjecting him to continuous barney the purple dinosaur recordings. Nope, they are just letting in sit in his cell, to the extent he can sit at all, in silence. there are even rumors we might cut a deal with him to get the names of other “suspects.” That seems to lessen our security.

The worst incident of American history happened on Bush’s watch. Spin it any way you want, but that’s a fact that even the most vociferous Obama haters cannot deny.

Right, good thinking mikeb302000, I feel so much better now. The country be dammed, but at least President Obama is okay. (maybe Mike I should have said “country be g-dammed” as I suspect you like that better – it didn’t bother you the first time).

So, that means President Obama should be allowed to commit the same errors — free of criticism or complaint. And if a Republican President should succeed him, then that person should also be given a free pass if these same types of mistakes are made.

The country does not matter, the party does. Pure leftist genius!

Although 9/11 was not the worse incident of American history, it was a terrible and horrific day that did occur on former President Bush’s watch.

As a result, he recognized the enemy, sought them out, and attacked them (name it, find it, kill it — apologies for repeating).

On the other hand, President Obama has reversed course, refusing to name the enemy and denying there is a war. Instead, he seeks to repeat the mistakes of the past (pre 9/11). He is attempting to reinvent the wheel and has come-up with a square.

Al Qaeda is not intent on generating a crime wave, they are committed to fighting a war and destroying anything not in their image (for a taste, here is an example of our enemy’s sense of justice and how they intend to run things **warning — images quite disturbing, Afghanistan prior to 9/11, no sound **).

The President is unwittingly supporting al Qaeda. He has emboldened them. They see a weak President (ie troop movement delays) — one who is uncommitted (ie arbitrary withdrawal dates) and whom they can bend to their will (ie closing of Gitmo). They see an American leadership that is prosecuting American intelligence agents and troops. They see incompetence throughout the administration when measured against national security and warfare. They see opportunities.

From the viewpoint of al Qaeda, they are sensing victory.

This is what President Obama has failed to understand.

As for what currently serves as the President’s strategy: blame the previous administration and divide the country (the latter is working quite well). He has nothing and therefore needs to resign for the good of the country.

How true. In addition, the folks in the current administration (from top to bottom) hold the common view that America – and its past policies – are the reason Fundamentalist Islam is on the attack. In their view, America must unclench its fist and show a more benevolent face to the Islamic world. And the act of turning the other cheek is one that must be repeated to allow the terrorists time to come to their senses.

  39. Walter Mead has an essay over at Foreign Policy on the conflicted worldview the Administration has:

Obama’s long deliberation over the war in Afghanistan is a case study in presidential schizophrenia: After 94 days of internal discussion and debate, he ended up splitting the difference — rushing in more troops as his generals wanted, while calling for their departure to begin in July 2011 as his liberal base demanded. It was a sober compromise that suggests a man struggling to reconcile his worldview with the weight of inherited problems. Like many of his predecessors, Obama is not only buffeted by strong political headwinds, but also pulled in opposing directions by two of the major schools of thought that have guided American foreign-policy debates since colonial times.

Mead is perhaps being too generous to the Administration, Obama gave foreign policy no deep thought prior to his election, and there is no factoring in of his Marxist filled upbringing, which could be filed as mutations of the Wilsonian and Jeffersonian worldview.

  44. WE are vulnerable on terror. Neither our President, nor any in the leadership have the right idea on how to deal with this. We can spend all the money we want on newer, better equipment; brighter, more thorough screeners; robust processes and procedures – but we are only adding layers and filters.
I am not advocating a halt to these, only recognizing the limitations in them.
We must go after the terrorists and any that support them:
    1. We will hunt to kill any terrorist, anywhere.
    2. We will aid any government willing to help.
    3. We will no longer ask for permission to cross a border to hunt a terrorist, anywhere.
    4. We will stay out of any country where terrorists are actively being targeted by that government; as long as results are being achieved.
    5. We will recognize that collateral damage may occur – so those living among or near terrorists have been served notice.
    6. We may assist those injured inadvertently – but don’t count on it; you’ve been notified.
