Kristol: “This last week has been a victory for Al Qaeda”

Kristol:

Mr. Brennan said to you that “We are very worried that there are other Abdulmutallabs out there.” This Abdulmutallab was there for 4 months. He might know who the others are. He might know their names. We let him lawyer up and right now he’s probably thinking “Gee, maybe I could use that information to bargain with to get a reduced sentence. That what Brennan seemed to indicate when he kept talking about how well we’re going to work with his lawyers and we have some incentives to offer him. But this is operational intelligence in real time. We are not treating it as a war.”

  1. Look at this video. What’s telling here is not only what Kristol has to say, but what no one else has to say. How often does a Conservative get that many seconds to make a point without being shot down by some Obama cheerleader. No one said anything and Kristol went on and on. They all agree. It’s sad because they all know President B+ is utterly useless. And we’re probably going to lose a lot of Americans before we can get anything done.

  2. I can’t say that I disagree with that assessment. Anytime we back down the bully wins. Bloody their noses and they will think twice about trying it again. We are at war with a religeous group that wants us dead. Oh, yea, all of them do. Islam is radical, not just part of it. There is, just as in Christianity, those that make sacrifices for their god and take the Koran at face value. And the Koran says they are to kill the infidel. So if you aren’t a mooselem you are the enemy in their eyes. Strike back and strike hard and show them that we are a force with which to be recond. Take. No. Prisoners. Send them to their virgins (snicker).

But that isn’t going to happen with a pantywaist in charge.

  4. The guy who was briefed by the Saudi’s (in Oct) on the panty bomber is now making deals with the panty bomber. If that doesn’t make you scared of your government you’re in big trouble. President O’Dumbo was a 100% success in one thing. He picked the most stupid people in America to serve him, or is that to kiss his a**.

  5. Kristol is upset about a lot of things including the closing of the UK and US embassies in Yemen. He feels like that was a sign of weakness. That doesn’t bother me as much if it is related to imminent military action, which is possible given General Petreaus’ recent trip to Yemen.

  6. Good point, DRJ – and I’m surprised that more MSM outlets are not speculating on just that possibility. Why else would both embassies close at the exact same time period? Or at least that’s my fervent hope.

  7. Always enjoy Kristol, even when he’s mistaken (which he is not, in this) he has an impish quality and a joie de vivre that is sadly missing from most of the punditocracy.

However, his best moment on that show was his spirited case for Donald E. Westlake being the Best. Writer. Ever. Many thanks, Mr. Kristol.

  8. On 1/3/10 on CNN’s “State of the Union” talking head Gloria Borger asked former chief of CIA’s bin Ladin unit to comment on the recent suicide bombing attack on CIA forward base. Scheurer took the opportunity to point a finger directly at John Brennan.

The following is from CNN’s transcript site:

BORGER: How does this affect both morale and strategy as the agency expands its role?

SCHEUER: Well, I think it hurts morale to a certain extent, naturally, because of the deaths, but it hurts morale even more because one of the officers who got killed had arranged an operation in 1998 that would have killed or captured Osama bin Laden. And Mr. Brennan was instrumental in preventing that operation from occurring. Instead he said the Americans should trust the Saudis to take care of bin Laden.

So it’s a painful— it’s a painful death, but more importantly it’s a death that didn’t need to occur had Mr. Clinton — Mr. Brennan, George Tenet, and Mr. Berger had the courage to try to defend Americans.

BORGER: Now I wish all of those gentlemen were here today to defend themselves.

SCHEUER: I wish they were too. And I would be delighted anytime to talk with them in public on any — in any forum, ma’am.

  9. Ropelight, that’ll leave a mark.

I’m sorry to hear that the people killed in this attack was so central to the efforts against Bin Laden back then, but it makes sense if this was a center of operations against al Qaida. There are going to be long term repercussions to losing these people and this base.
