Patterico Banned at LGF

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:48 am

Which, since I didn’t leave a comment there, evidently happened because I had the audacity to point out that Charles Johnson had omitted some facts in his post about that Obama Photoshop.

Charles last night posted an entry reproducing some (to me, pointless and unfunny) Photoshop of Johnson shining Sarah Palin’s shoes. In comments, he wrote:

Meanwhile, Patterico is actually trying to argue that the original picture of Obama shining Palin’s shoes has nothing to do with the right wing.

No, I’m not — and I went to comments to explain that I’m not. But when I tried to log in, I got this:

Patterico Banned from LGF

The remainder of this post sets out what I planned to say to Charles in response. Since I can’t say it there, I’ll say it here:

No, Charles, I’m not “trying to argue that the original picture of Obama shining Palin’s shoes has nothing to do with the right wing.” What I said was that you overstated your case when you claimed to prove that it did. You don’t know that, and you haven’t proved it. Which is why I said:

Charles: until you’re ready to actually prove where the image originated, please don’t claim that you have done so. It’s this kind of overstatement that runs you into trouble.

One of your commenters here said:

Patterico’s focusing narrowly on the origin of the picture, rather than how it is being forwarded and used by many right-wing websites, which is where the problem lies.

This is also not true. In my previous post, I provided a link to an example of a right-wing site that did indeed use the image in a racist way — as part of a compilation of anti-Obama Photoshops “including a picture of a black-faced Obama with a gleaming white smile, holding a plate of fried chicken and watermelon, accompanied by a caption reading: ‘Lawdy! I sho’ loves campainnin’!’”

As I said: “That guy is a racist.” I also said: “Does this mean that no right-wingers have used this image in a racist way? Of course not, as the above link shows.”

So I’m not ignoring right-wing racism at all, and in fact pointed out an example of it in my post.

But I am also not doing what you’re doing: suggesting that racism is uniquely a conservative phenomenon. I’ve got news for you: it’s not. There are racists in all walks of life in this country. The racism of the left emerges every time a black Republican comes to prominence.

The examples are out there, if you’re willing to see them. Trouble is, I don’t think you are. I think you have blinded yourself to examples that contradict your mindset.

And I think that’s a shame.

UPDATE: This has obviously happened to a lot of other people. I’m asking people to tell their own stories about being banned at LGF here.

  1. When the left is ready to talk about its bigotry and racism, call me.

Includes but not limited to negative stereotyping of black conservatives, pro-life women, anyone serious of Christianity, white men, Southerners, Military people, successful entrepreneurs and corporate executives, and last but not least anyone who disagrees with them.

  2. The regulars at LGF use it like a drunk uses a lamp post…for support, rather than illumination.

  3. I was an ardent, daily visitor to LGF – a Lizaroid if you will for a couple of years. Last year, however, Charles got on a daily ripping of Creation Science. Not that I’m a “Creation Science” church goer, I am however, a Christian. And Christians DO believe that God created the heavens and the earth (and everything else for that matter). I left LGF then, and have not been back since.

  4. lgf is now devolved into a psychotic freakshow. Going there these day for enlightenment is somewhat akin to needing a late night snack and then opening Jeffrey Dahmer’s Fridgidaire.

  5. A while back I emailed Charles Johnson, requesting that my LGF account be deleted (he does not allow you to cancel your own account). Although this was a private email, he lied about the contents and mocked me publicly.

Charles Johnson: you are a liar and a coward, lacking in both class and character.

  6. He really has gone off the rails. Now the original “other side” is all bad, not the other “other side”!

Note his bland report on the return of cartoon jihad. It’s so obvious an attempt to wantonly murder the man, who was with his 5-year-old grandson, that Johsnon just reprints article, then stops.

  11. Its a sign of the times. If you don’t agree with peoples view then use the standard Alinsky rule. 13.) Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it and polarize it. In your case ban it. If the left can’t find racism they will photoshop it themselves and blame it on their opponents 11.) If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside.

The Democrats can’t be racist after all they were the leaders of the KKK. The Democrats fought against the abolishment of slavery. The Democrats fought against school integration in the 60’s We have been taught revisionist history at all levels of of school and it has been carried forward towards our current marxist Political Correctness life today.

I am proud I am a Racist I believe only in the Human Race, so far I have not liked one single Extraterrestrial life form yet.

So if LGF or the democrats what to ban you or label you a racist, remember history. Teach history, shine the light back onto their roots. After all how is that 40+ year of War on Poverty working out for them. What have the accomplished in the war on poverty? Worst test scores in poor neighborhoods. Higher unemployment in poor neighborhoods. More single parent families in poor neighborhoods. Trillion dollars spent to keep the poor even poorer.

Its very sad that something has driven Charles to such extremes of dishonesty.

Sick. Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs reached a new low yesterday.
Johnson attacked this blog for reporting again on Barack Obama’s safe schools czar. According to Charles, if you point out anything about Barack Obama’s “Safe” Schools Czar Kevin Jennings’ sordid record of promoting explicit, outrageously age-inappropriate sexual filth in the classroom you are a “homophobe.” He must have started reading the Soros-linked Media Matters since he flipped.

  14. Before dropping a bomb here, let me tell you first of all that I am a black man myself.

For those who can’t recognize the double-standard that leftists are employing here, consider this: It was common for liberals to make reference to GWB as a “smirking chimp” or “Chimpy” due to his personal appearance. For those of us who would desire to do the same to Barack Obama, please let us know WHICH animal he could be compared to without it being racist.

    L.N. Smithee (4b5542)

  15. Charles Johnson has no credibility as a blogger. Period. Chucky is simply an unhinged Fascist pretending to a rational, centrist-minded citizen. He bans people for having non-provocative disagreements and won’t even tolerate any criticism or challenging debate from others.

It’s high-time the right-wing blogosphere step up and give Charles Johnson a very deserving comeuppance and a swift hard slap to his Fascist face.

    Bob (c98910)

  16. Charles is a good man … let’s not let his words or his actions disturb that fact.

  19. I assume your comment was meant as sarcasm, right BS? If not, please elaborate.

If you push a negative hard and deep enough it will break through into its counterside.

True up to a point, but this strategy’s starting to backfire, bigtime. The inevitable backlash against this kind of behavior is just beginning to be felt among the electorate and their “leadership.” Wait until next year’s campaigns begin in earnest – it should be quite illuminating.

Chucky is simply an unhinged Fascist pretending to a rational, centrist-minded citizen.

I don’t think he’s pretending to be anything but an unhinged Fascist at this point.

    Dmac (a964d5)

  20. One day I hope to understand what has happened to Charles Johnson. It’s really too bad, as LGF was once a useful and influential blog. Now it is neither.

    Michael (0cf865)

  21. This is just another example of the meltdown of LGF, which at one time was an interesting site.

I was banned for “down dinging” posts I didn’t like. I had “up dinged” others. Apparently the set-up for gaining reader opinion is only intended to make the posts look good rather than gain any feedback. So the site is not about any dialog or set of facts, it is about Charles’ 1984-like echo chamber.

And Patterico, you hit the substance of the situation spot on. But you can’t fight the LGF meme about those evil raaaaacist right wingers. Remember, “raaaaacist” always has five “a”s.

    Clavius (7075c5)

  22. Johnson is a tiresome scole. He claims that he left the GOP over its hatred and racism. One of his key examples is the “blind support of ultra right wing nationalist, neo nazi, white supremacist RS McCain.”

Enter Pattterico, who subjects the Right Wing Blogosphere to a lengthy and serious discussion on the race issue. Causing deep divisions, but also leading to an open and necessary conversation on race.

Given that his tissue of an argument about membership in the GOP is dead, he bans Patterico for accurate comments on his own blog.

How pathetic. No wonder he has resorted to being a calendar salesman instead of a serious blogger.

    bskb (8c6f39)

  23. I, too, used to read Johnson’s blog (I think since 2001 but I’m not sure, but it has been for years).

I lost interest in him when he shifted his focus to right-wing European political groups, then deleted his feed when he really went off the rails. Since then, he’s moved on to contradicting statements that he’s made in the past, attempting to rewrite his history and vigorously suppressing any free speech on his site. What an amazing, and sad, downfall.

    Bill Peschel (1bf3f3)

  24. You’re giving Johnson too much credit, attributing it to his “mind-set”- the plain truth is, Little Charles has gotten into a snit with the right blogs, due to many things, (PJMedia’s demise, the fact Malkin is an actual star while no one on cable calls Johnson for the panels, being a failure at about everything he does, etc) and now his raison for existing is to be contrarian to anything the right blogs are talking about at the moment, to cheap shot right blogs at every opportunity, to disregard facts and twist other people’s words to try to smear any and all right blogs, to have his minions go on other sites (Hot Air, for one) and post racist blatherings, then accuse Hot Air of being racist for not immediately removing them. The list goes on. If the right is on any story, you can count on Mad Charles to take the other side and quote some obscure and unpersuasive argument from some podunk lefty blog to try to debunk the story of the day, along with a post chiding the right for making a mountain out of a molehill (much like his own making a huge deal about a Democrat posting a racist image and blaming it on the entire right).

Johnson is a troll with a blog, and that’s it. He posts nothing but reactionary attacks on anything the right is for and defending anything they are against. He bends himself into pretzels defending everything Obama. Best thing to do is ignore his madness and deny him hits. His vanity blog is already costing him more money in bandwidth than it’s paying in ads, as he readily admits. It’s only a matter of time before he is forced to shut it down or sell the domain name.

And good riddance. He never was much more than a mean-spirited asshole. Now he’s pissing our direction instead of the other way.

  26. I never go to LGF anymore as his website started locking up my browser on my ten year old pc. All I ever hear about is his prejudice and bigotry. There is nothing else to call it when he notes one little fact about somebody and wildly extrapolates that to all sorts of assumptions about that person. It is exactly the same as assuming something about a guy because of his race.

Why don’t you remove your link to his website until he quits crashing peoples pc’s and quits banning people.

Johnson seems to be trying to build traffic for his dying blog on the backs of other bloggers. 36. It’s funny how Charles Johnson mentally lumps everyone who doesn’t agree with him on whatever subject into one big enemies list called Right Wingers. Did it ever occur to him that some white supremacist site unrelated to the Republican party created the photoshop? How come a Democrat visiting a racist site and forwarding the photo doesn’t count as Left Wing hate?

I’ve got news for Charles, both parties are full of racists. Both the left and the right. The Democrats were the party of slavery and still have powerful following in the south among southern white racists.

Look at all the T-shirts worn by the left of that racist Che Guevera.

  47. The guy never was a conservative; he was an FDR liberal who wanted to use force against radical Islam. But he was hostile to “blood and soil” nationalists at home and in Europe who also wanted to expel these people from our countries and believed in our historic culture.

I would also add that Johnson is no intellectual, rarely writes any articles of note, does not know how to engage in analysis. For him, it’s always a two step process: (1) label something you disagree with in a hateful category like racist or Islamist or (formerly) leftist and (2) pile on. This is not a worthy way for any intelligent man to behave.

I got banned years ago for suggesting that the communists killed a lot of people too (like the Nazis) and that genocide against the Palestinians would be unjust. Too “extreme” I guess.

    Roach (c2c437)

  48. I stopped reading Johnson’s blog in 2004–yes, that long ago–because of what docweasel said:

He never was much more than a mean-spirited asshole.

Johnson never, at any time, put forth any real, rational arguments in defense of conservatism or individual liberties. His site was devoted primarily to one thing–bashing Muslims and Arabs. Not because he was opposed to jihadism, per se, but because he hates religion and religious belief. Islam and its followers were merely a convenient cipher for him to project that hate. Yeah, he managed to get Rather’s scalp, but as many have pointed out before, he wasn’t even the one who actually broke the story on the similiarities of the Rather document and MS Word.

I’d heard that he had started turning “back” to the left, but the thing to understand is that Johnson is not a leftist or a conservative. He’s whatever he feels is convenient for him to be at that particular time. He piggy-backed onto conservatism for a season because it was (temporarily) bringing him notoriety; he’s piggy-backing onto leftism for the same reason.

Johnson is basically a more prominent version of John Cole at Balloon Juice–a disingenuous clown with no real principles who wants to be part of the “cool kids” club, and changes his political affiliation to suit the style of the time.

  50. LGF was indispensable when he was covering Rathergate and the later photoshop propaganda scandals. He had carved out a great niche in covering and exposing propaganda.

When he became an Obama supporter it seemed as if his personality changed. There was a common psychological effect that Obama had on a lot of people, and I think that Johnson got the worst of it. Google “Obama Hypnosis” to get the idea.

I was banned from LGF when I posted a response to his tea party thread asking why there was no neutral thread on the tea parties – the only thread Johnson had put up was entirely about the handful of racist signs held up there.

I was banned within SECONDS and my message was deleted. It’s a shame, because I wanted to follow up with an observation that every one of the pictures he showed of racists and Ron Paul supporters had one thing in common — no one was standing anywhere near them. They were being shunned and ignored and I thought that was significant.

I thought it was somewhat hilarious that I was banned for such a slight rebuke. I was also relieved that, being banned, there was no more reason for me to invest any more energy in the ugly shell of what was once one of the truly great blogs.

  51. daley, that was more self-critique than an attempt at points-scoring or a passive-aggressive “post not lest I unleash hell” thing. Which, come to think of it, Pat has done on occassion.

  52. LGF passed on someone else’s insightful analysis of the Rathergate fraud.

and that’s mainly all he’s ever accomplished, other than mocking the left when he was on the right, and mocking the right when he is on the left. Like Sullivan, he’s vicious and irrationally unfair. He’s unreasonable and those who don’t agree with him are evil. That he’s flipped completely is pretty amusing. He must really be mad at his former views. Some of the stuff he shouts about these days is the very opposite of what he used to say.

“shut up,” explained Charles Johnson. “You’re banned, and therefore are uncredible”.

  56. ML, while you are joking, it’s interesting that Charles Johnson used confidential information, financial information, to out someone who disagreed with Charles in a mild way. Charles got that info via that user donating to support Charles’s blog. It’s already a betrayal of the process of internet discussion to out commenters on your blog who simply disagree with you in a non-criminal manner. It’s ridiculous and kinda disgusting to do so using their donation information.

Charles is angry… that’s all he’s proven. Of course, it’s the right that’s most angry at people pushing racist crap about Obama. It’s well beyond the point where Obama is a joke in and of himself. Racism is clearly distracting from the point. Go to a TEA rally and if you even see one or two racists, they will either be larouche supporting democrats or weirdos, and either way, everyone will be mad at them.

I suspect a dirty trick. A democrat is the oldest known source of this shoe-shine thing, and I think some tricksters are probably pushing a lot of these racist attacks as far and wide as possible so they can point to them and argue against racism instead of trying to argue against substance.

LGF’s Killgore Trout boasted, to Johnson’s joy, that he was posting the N word slur on conservative blogs to prove they were racists. No… all you proved is that you are a fraud and when LGF points out racism, they are probably lying about where it came from.

LGF already tried this and failed, and now they are just honing their con.

Remember the reporters that were kicked off the plane during the campaign ?

  59. It’s not just Patterico either, or anyone who posted at his site last night and got banned. I get the same thing when I try to go LGF. I only posted once at LGF, ever, over two years ago, and got banned. I don’t think Chuckles decided to ban every IP he ever banned from posting. I think he decided to ban every IP that has also visited Patterico. How does he know that? He wrote some code on his site that invades the privacy of our computers when we visit his site. I’m pretty sure that there’s something illegal or at least highly unethical as far as that goes.

That’s kind of beside the point I want to make though, which is that this man is so deranged that he will try to keep you out of his little echo chamber if you even dare visit a site that he doesn’t find acceptable. You get that? You go somewhere Kommissar Johnson doesn’t like, you don’t get to even view LGF anymore.

Which is fine with me, less hits for him, not that I visited anymore there unless it was because a blog like this linked to him. But this man is loony as hell.

    chaos (9c54c6)

  60. chaos, you can use the “referrer” information that most browsers deliver to determine if someone came to your site from visiting Patterico’s first.

If you are worried about it, it’s not hard to spoof or block that info from being sent. Though I don’t want to bother with someone’s comment section if they are this thin skinned.

  61. > Charles is a good man … let’s not let his words or his actions disturb that fact.
I guess the question is whether or not we want Charles’ blog — the one he intends to write — to fail …

Johnson’s actions once gave the appearance of being a good man. His actions of late suggest that that “good man” has been replaced by a Stepford Democrat, to coin a phrase.

And I don’t say that because I disagree with him, though more and more uniformly, I do. It’s because he’s stopped being a venue for the free discourse of ideas and discussion, and become another ideological nazi who shuts down anyone who says anything he doesn’t like, and feels free to sock-puppet them as well, having done so.

That — particularly the latter — is crossing a line which I don’t respect or appreciate from anyone, and will happily join in the revilement of, regardless of creed.

  64. chaos, you can use the “referrer” information that most browsers deliver to determine if someone came to your site from visiting Patterico’s first.

Yeah he could but I didn’t come there from here, I don’t click links to his site, if there’s something I want to see there that I found on another blog (like this) I go to Google and go to LGF from there. So.

If you are worried about it, it’s not hard to spoof or block that info from being sent. Though I don’t want to bother with someone’s comment section if they are this thin skinned.

Oh no I’m not worried about it… if I wanted to I’d set up a bunch of proxies and other goodies and see if Charles’ skillZ are as good as advertised, but that’s not something I’d waste my time on for Charles Johnson.

The real question is, Chuckles being so desperate for hits, how is he going to get them when he blocks the main group of new visitors to his site, readers of blogs he’s unjustly attacked? Taking off your nose to spite your face eh Chuck?

What you’re saying is strange, but as you note, Charles knows a lot about how to ban people from disagreeing. He’s worked harder at it than anyone in the history of the internet.

I’m glad we aren’t worried about it. If he doesn’t want disagreements and back and forth, that’s his business. Someone above said this is about whether “we” want his blog to fail. But of course, once LGF started banning all discussion, it had failed right then and there on its own.

Someone above said this is about whether “we” want his blog to fail.

I want his blog to fail, as in, I want his character assassination act to bring his site activity to nil. And then I want him to have an epiphany and start acting like a decent human being again. Then I want him to have a very successful blog.

Or, I just want him to ride his bicycle off a cliff. Not to kill him of course, just cripple his hands maybe.

  72. Chuckles doesn’t have a case. I’d love to see him try and have Mr. Hoft’s lawyer hand the judge a nice long printout of Charles’ less… polite comments and posts over the last 2-3 years, many of them gratuitous insults and labeling of people as fascists and racists and homophobes with much more vehemence and much less evidence than is contained in Hoft’s post… followed by the judge laughing Chuckles out of the courtroom, followed by Chuckles getting countersued for frivolously suing Hoft and for lawyer costs.

  79. LGF acts like every other Jewish group when it comes to Israel: pushy, obnoxious, inclined to censor, and immune to facts. That this tendency has taken root on the right is a bad thing.

Let’s not forget something: Israel is a separate country with separate interests. We are not Israel, and they don’t need us to do their bidding. Let them defend themselves if they can, and let’s not get too involved with them and their problems. We didn’t help the Brits sort out the Argies, and we shouldn’t be involved in Israel’s attempt to hold onto the Jews’ ancestral homeland either. It’s not our business, and American Israel worshippers–Jews and Evangelicals and creeps like Charles Johnson too–are incredibly out of touch with reality and ordinary moral sense and it infects every other aspect of their political belief and political rhetoric.

We have our own reason not to like Muslims, but unlike Israel, they can mostly be dealt with by expelling them and not letting in new ones. Since this obvious solution does not require the US to give Israel gazillions of dollars and do their bidding in the Middle East, Charles Johnson hates it and hates those European conservatives who have stumbled upon this obvious point.

    Roach (c2c437)

  80. “Johnson is a troll with a blog, and that’s it.”

Bingo. Charles used to scream bloody murder any time other bloggers (usually DKos) would cherry-pick something a hysterical commenter posted as a means to smear Charles and LGF. Fast forward a couple of years and that is basically all he does now: comment on other comments from the blogs he doesn’t like.

    G Wiz (86b3de)

  81. Roux, it is interesting that this obviously carefully made and thought out comic makes absolutely no point that is critical of Obama from a conservative POV. Nothing about this foreign policy or spending or government growth or takeover of private business.

He’s vaguely serving Palin somehow, perhaps by not standing up for himself, but really, it’s strange that whoever made this didn’t want to criticize Obama’s politics. It’s almost as though someone wanted to show that people are racist against Obama without actually understanding what the right’s problem with Obama is.

Like I said, LGF admins boast about planting racism on right leaning blogs to prove they are racist. This is a lot like that, only more. Did LGF do it this time? It doesn’t matter: They Do This Kind Of Lying. And we know the oldest sources of this are liberals.

All to get Patterico and others on the right to admit that, of course, racism exists on the right occasionally, and is bad. I think Killgore Trout drew this thing. Don’t have much evidence, but all of it points to him.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  82. I’m HIGHLY disappointed in Patterico dismissing the Charles Johnson shoe shiner image as pointless. (It was never meant to be funny, so I will grant him that it was, indeed, unfunny.)

Swapping out Obama and putting a white guy back into the picture, like it originally was, is THE ENTIRE POINT. There is nothing racist about shoe shining. it’s not a business that is exclusively black.
If you immediately think so, you’re the racist.
The image means that Obama is qualified to shine Palin’s shoes. period.

I sure got you out of cover quick, eh? You dropped your facade way too fast.

You people always immediately start crying that “any criticism of Israel means we’re neo-Nazis or anti-semitic that’s not faaaaaaaaaair.” It’s one of your distinguishing features.

I speak the truth, and what I said above is the truth.

What you spoke is typical anti-Semitic agitprop masquerading as valid remarks. Let’s just go down the list:

LGF is “like any other Jewish group” aka Israel > all. Strike one.

Implication that supporters of Israel in America put Israel’s interests above America’s. Strike two.

Supporters of Israel are “worshipers” who are “out of teach with reality and moral decency. Strike three.

Now you’ve already struck out, little neo-Nazi, but even if you hadn’t gone down swinging already, you sure as hell do with the next paragraph:

Since this obvious solution does not require the US to give Israel gazillions of dollars and do their bidding in the Middle East

  92. Dustin, they were described as subgroups of America’s Israel worshippers. I don’t think it’s going out on a limb to say the vast majority of American Jews strongly support Israel, and that the second biggest cohort of support is among Evangelicals with their “dispensationalist” theology.

It’s true, though, there are some Norman Finkelsteins out there. It doesn’t change the point, and I should be free to say Jews the way I say Muslims, even though in both cases there are obviously individual exceptions.

My broader point was that America’s Israel supporters have a certain way of talking to critics, and that way is harsh, censorious, full of invective, and typically inclined to silence critics. LGF did it. He has always done it. He does it with opponenets to his right and left. He’s just doing it now to even more people. And his technique mimics the way organized Jewish groups deal with Jewish and Israel critics everywhere. Remember when they tried to stop the Passion of the Christ.

We shouldn’t be surprised it has now turned on the group which is most typically in conflict with Jews everywhere: the right-wing, which is typically less inclined to embrace globalism, universalism, and multiculturalism, all of which benefit Jews when they are a minority in Gentile societies and are strongly supported by and promoted by Jews in these societies.

    Roach (c2c437)

    carlitos (d32efe)

  95. My broader point was that America’s Israel supporters have a certain way of talking to critics, and that way is harsh, censorious, full of invective, and typically inclined to silence critics.

Neo-Nazis have a certain way of talking to hide the fact that they’re neo-Nazis, including but not limited to:

    – Whining that Israel supporters are harsh, censorious, full of invective, and typically inclined to silence critics (that’s redundant, “censorious” means the same thing, but you’ve already shown yourself not to be too bright)
    – Claiming that “Jewish” groups act in a certain vicious manner
    – Claiming that “Jewish” groups and non-Jewish Israel supporters knowingly support Israel at the expense of the United States (a specific claim in the old anti-Semitic propaganda line)
    – Claiming some kind of inherent moral deficiency on the part of “Jewish” groups and non-Jewish Israel supporters
    – Heavily implying that all American support should be withdrawn from Israel (which would leave Israel in a rather precarious state)
    – General statements about Jews advocating political positions that weaken the societies they live in, for the benefit of the Jews in the society and Jews everywhere

Tell me Roach, why would Jews embrace globalism, universalism (can you be a globalist and a universalist at the same time? Wouldn’t being a globalist mean you can’t be a universalist?), and multiculturalism in “Gentile”-majority societies? It seems to me that the implication is that “Gentile” societies naturally, in your view, have an aversion to Jews, which Jews try to counteract by using their wealth and influence to advocate “multiculturalism” and other similar values.

You’re not clever, Roach. People know how you guys try to talk to hide what you really are. We’re not dumb. We see right through it.

    chaos (9c54c6)

  96. This is like shooting fish in a barrel. Think for yourselves, for once, it’s refreshing.

This is also a common theme that comes from those who advocate positions that they know the vast majority of society rejects. “Think for yourselves for once.” Just what should we think about? How people just don’t like Jews so Jews have to advocate multiculturalism as a self-defense mechanism? Or maybe how Jews put their Jewish homeland above the nations they live in (if they don’t live in Israel). Just what should we be thinking about for ourselves?

Another common theme is the arrogance. Why it’s like shooting fish in a barrel is it? Why so defensive then? You sure got your hackles up and started telling people that they’re sheep quick, didn’t you? For someone so confident in their position, you don’t behave that way.

How do we know this Roach guy isn’t some troll from LGF coming over ala Kilgore Trout so Chuckles can smear Patterico about “racist” comments here?

  98. Chaos, have you read Berkeley professor Yuri Slezkine’s The Jewish Century? It answers your last questions in full.

Gentile-majority societies–i.e., every country but Israel–incidentally, do not have a natural aversion to Jews, but Jews, quite naturally and understandably, have an aversion to being a vulnerable and identifiable minority in those societies, and the various changes–in essence the traits of Modernism–make them less visible and more powerful, and Jews have been at the vanguard of those efforts in every one of those societies. Other merchant minorities–Chinese in Indonesia, Armenians in Turkey–have similar traits and embrace similar changes in their societies for the same reasons.

Incidentally, why would “being a globalist mean you can’t be a universalist”? It seems to me globalism is a type of universalism and vice-versa, but perhaps you can enlighten me on that brilliant point you were trying to make.

    Roach (c2c437)

How can one be a globalist and a universalist at the same time? One has limits (like, say, the globe) and one doesn’t.

Chaos, have you read Berkeley professor Yuri Slezkine’s The Jewish Century? It answers your last questions in full.

It’s also a great big pile of rubbish, not anti-Semitic rubbish, but simply poor scholarship, poor writing, poor analysis. But I understand why you would like it.

Your reference to Chinese in Indonesia and Armenians in Turkey is irrelevant and really nothing more than an attempt to sound knowledgeable and a try at covering your butt. Chinese in Indonesia and Armenians in Turkey do not try to manipulate Indonesian policy or Turkish policy to benefit China at the expense of Indonesia or Armenia at the expense of Turkey, as you claim Jews do with America and Israel.

Really now we’ve all gone to high school and most of us have gone to college, your silly little attempts to be subtle aren’t working. You’re pushing the same old crap that Der Sturmer did, you’re just trying to be quiet and clever about it. The Jews hide themselves and accumulate power and manipulate the society they reside in.

Why would Jews feel identifiable and vulnerable in societies that you say don’t have any problem with them? Once again you are apparently unaware of how incoherent and contradictory your remarks are.

Chaos why are so many Jews liberals and why, in spite of their great wealth, do 70% vote Democrat and self-identify as liberal? Explain that, if you would. I think it’s consistent with my thesis, but maybe you have some better explanation.

    Dustin (b54cdc)

  112. What took me so long? Well…I hadn’t visited in a year or two — like the others his new “right-wingers” and “creationist/IDers” agenda didn’t really do much for me so I stopped visiting regularly. I only ventured back when other bloggers I do read (like Patterico) linked to him.

When I finally weighed in on a disagreement (the Virginia infanticide loophole) against him, I was disappeared.

    Hoystory (7e6995)

    chaos (9c54c6)

  114. I never realized universalism, as applied to politics, had to extend beyond the globe. WTF? Usually it is used to distinguish more parochial and nationalist kinds of poltics from those with more grand, global ambitions such as liberalism, communism, free trade, etc. Your point about the distinction of globalism and universalism is incredibly pedantic.

Chaos asks, “Why would Jews feel identifiable and vulnerable in societies that you say don’t have any problem with them?” Simple, even if generally welcome, as minorities they are visible, sometimes suspect, and, truth be told, were often scapegoats in those societies when certain bad things happened, and this was especially true of Jews who in many cases were resented for their wealth and insularity.

Chaos, when you say Jews vote liberal because “Because they’re free human beings and they can vote any way they damn well please?”, that’s another way of saying that you refuse to answer the question, and that you refuse to consider the political meaning of this fact, even though I’m sure like most conservatives you’re willing to generalize and analyze Muslims as a group, even though they too are human beings and can believe whatever they want, but they happen as a group to be anti-Western and pro-Jihad. Making appropriate generalizations about groups including immigrants, Jews, Muslims, and White Christians for that matter, is necessary to understand political life.

Was Richard Nixon a neo-nazi? Not all criticism of Jews equals Nazism, but you seem to think it does. There is no reason we should not be able to look at Jews the way we look at any other group, making appropriate generalizatitons. That’s what I did here: noting that LGF’s methods are like those of AIPAC and other organized Jewish groups in that they avoid discussion, condemn people by extreme forms of ostracism, and embrace informal censorship. He just happens finally to have turned on the American right, though he turned on Europeans like Brussels Journal and Vlaams Belang a long time ago.

    Roach (c2c437)

  115. Blah blah blah, blah blah blah, strawmen, more not-subtle-enough anti-Semitic propaganda lines, I told you neo-Nazi I’m not wasting any more time on you. You can try to derail the thread all you want, I said what I wanted to say, what you are and what you stand for has been made very clear, nothing more to say to you. Waste your time on long, lying defenses of yourself all you want.

    chaos (9c54c6)

  116. I guess, Roach, that argument is quite a bit easier when you put words in others’ mouth.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  117. Making appropriate generalizations about groups including immigrants, Jews, Muslims, and White Christians for that matter, is necessary to understand political life.

Just one more tidbit to make it crystal clear to everyone reading this just how inept you are at this little game you’re playing:

So if 70% of American Jews are Democrats and 30% aren’t, how is “appropriate” to generalize about American Jews? 30% of a population is not an insignificant number. If 30% of Americans decided to riot, that would pretty much shut the country down until they decided to stop.

So please, let’s not play your little games. Again, we aren’t stupid. We recognize what you’re doing. It’s very easy to spot.

Chaos, when you say Jews vote liberal because “Because they’re free human beings and they can vote any way they damn well please?”, that’s another way of saying that you refuse to answer the question, and that you refuse to consider the political meaning of this fact, even though I’m sure like most conservatives you’re willing to generalize and analyze Muslims as a group

Attributing characteristics to people you don’t have evidence for in order to criticize them is just about the lowest form of debating.

Yes. He also has a half-dozen or so sycophants (MandyManners, iceweasel, Kilgore Trout, sharmuta, etc.) to do it for him when he’s busy riding his bicycle or too upset to sit in front of a computer.

    chaos (9c54c6)

  122. The odd thing is, I disagreed with Mr. Johnson pretty vehemently in the comments recently, repeatedly asking him directly for comment, and wasn’t banned. I had to ‘call him out’ to get an answer, and he corrected my interpretation of whatever it was, then I apologized, and that was that. I don’t have a blog though, so maybe that’s the thing. I’m not on any ‘side’ in this sort of thing.

I don’t think that banning Patterico does anything for LGF’s credibility.

I walked by & one time saw Larry King getting his shoes shined – every once in a while he would come to the Center.

The shoe shiner also said he made very good $$$ shining the execs shoes & loved his job. He was a super friendly guy.

Dude had an honest job & I doubt he felt like a sucker for having to shine shoes for his career.

  129. I don’t care for his handling of his site, his unfair demogoging of differing opinions, his hateful and unfair attacks on other more honest bloggers, his shutdown of dissent and his utter comtempt of religion.

I used to be proud to be one of the lizards over there, but now I don’t go there at all.

I wish other blogs and readers would just ignore him and let his little empire implode.

  133. Same old story here: I was blocked by LGF for politely disagreeing with a Johnson post. I made my point, provided a link to a National Review Online post that supported my view, and was blocked a few minutes later. It felt like I had been punched in the stomach.

I stopped visiting the site. No point hanging around in an echo chamber of ugly voices.

I have no idea what went wrong with Charles Johnson. I hope he recovers.

  134. Johnson never, at any time, put forth any real, rational arguments in defense of conservatism or individual liberties. His site was devoted primarily to one thing–bashing Muslims and Arabs. Not because he was opposed to jihadism, per se, but because he hates religion and religious belief.

I’d heard that he had started turning “back” to the left, but the thing to understand is that Johnson is not a leftist or a conservative.

    Comment by Another Chris — 1/2/2010 @ 10:08 am

Since I never really read LGF or scrutinized its webmaster, I have only a somewhat limited sense of what makes one and the other tick. But I vaguely recall Johnson writing something about his ideology never being of the right, that it actually always was rooted in liberalism.

I think your take on what raised Johnson’s ire and influenced his attitude momentarily — the Islamofascism surrounding parts of the Islamic world and raised to the top on 9-11 — and which made him briefly sympathize with George Bush (and, in turn, most conservatives of the Western world) and, in turn, annoyed at the left — is correct.

Perhaps if 9-11 had been the work of, say, Green Peace or Hugo Chavez, or “Atheists for Communism,” or something like that, Johnson wouldn’t have been quite so shaken up in the first place. IOW, 9-11 was the event that in Johnson’s mind ended up impacting him — but only for a temporary time in his otherwise innately misguided way of thinking — in a manner that’s represented by the phrase: A conservative is a liberal who’s been mugged.

  137. What is the mad obsession with Charles Johnson from Conservative blogs. All I see weekly is ‘Charles Johnson was mean to me!”
For the love of God, move on and forget about this idiot already. I left the site a very long time ago when it descended into weird rants about evolution and from there it got so tiring I couldn’t visit any more.
The amount of time spent whining about mistreatment from this jackass could be spent supporting Conservative candidates like Allen West running in Florida.

    Metallica (e4735c)

  138. Good point Metallica. I bet 99% of people on the street never heard of LGF or Charles Johnson. He is really fucked in the head, though, and it is all kind of funny to me. I think I was banned in ’04.

    Roach (c2c437)

  139. metallica, what you said. I used to go to LGF daily, commented occasionally but not frequently. When I noticed it was going “off-track” I just stopped. That is the best revenge – he was “right-wing” for too long to ever build a significant left base so if conservatives stop going there he won’t matter much at all. Remember the old adage, “there is no such thing as bad publicity”.

  141. I am proud to state that I was banned by Chas for proclaiming that LGF jumped the shark, but the ban button broke. I was able to converse with his creepy followers for an extra hour, and was able to expose the hypocritical nature of the blog and I am sure there were several other conservative posters who were disgusted by lgf during the discussion as well.

Charles Johnson is a Col. Kurtz, a good warrior who broke, and surrounded himself with sycophants who supported his own vision of greatness.

  145. Shmuck Johnson has only one argument–a broad and disparate group has some bad people in it, ergo, the group itself is irremediably evil.

He does this with Muslims, he did it with liberals, now he’s seen the light (thinks he’s spotted a trend away from conservatism) and uses it with conservatives.

The trouble with him is that he’s both ignorant and none too bright. Even his paranoia and censorship appear to stem from these deficiencies, as he can’t abide anyone pointing out how stupid his posts are.

  146. I asked Killgore Trout to promise not to post the “Nig***” word on Hot Air or other blogs again, because doing so is destructive to discourse, and we shouldn’t judge blogs based on extreme comments or plant such comments in an effort to test the blog. I also told him he should apologize, since LGF was being hypocritical. I told Charles he should change positions from finding this permissible and revealing to acknowledging that it proves we can’t judge Hot Air or other blogs by the extreme example comments, since trolls with invariably plant comments to prove their case. It’s too easy and tempting for those who actually have that kind of rage.

I was very polite. I simply stated my position and asked them to stop and apologize. I was banned 6 minutes after posting this comment. I didn’t upvote or downvote anything. I didn’t call anyone names. I said “please” and “thank you”. All I did was disagree… and that was not welcome.

Charles repeatedly engages is personal attacks, outright smears, and mockery. But he can’t even take the mildest stress of civil debate. He’s such a joke… such a coward.
