Guantanamo Closing Delayed

[Guest post by DRJ]

Fox News reports the Obama Administration is delaying its plan to close the Guantanamo detention center at least until 2011 “because of anticipated appropriation struggles in Congress, the need to change federal law and construction time to upgrade an Illinois facility to hold detainees.”

  1. Oh no… you mean Barry and his merry band of robbers didn’t think it through? Again! Quelle horreur!

  2. Surprise. Another supposedly “easy” campaign promise broken.

  3. I thought he just had to hold his hand up like Moses and it’d just, you know, happen… or give a speech and bore Guantanamo into closing itself

  4. The Empty Suit(tm)… the Big Zero®… a rose is a rose. The decisions to close Gitmo and move these enemy terro… er, combatants to Illinois, and to try KSM and his band of merry men in NYC will haunt America for decades.

  5. How does he know that Congress will give him the money to purchase Thompson, or transport GTMO detainees to the U.S., or even to hold a trial of KSM in NYC???
All of these activities are very problematic when it comes to the funding.

  8. I really wonder why he said that, daleyrocks. My best guess is that he was trying to be modest but it comes off as clueless. Does he really think we elected an Ivy League-Law Review-intellectual to be President so he could make B+ decisions?

  9. Just why did we elect “… an Ivy League-Law Review-intellectual to be President…”?
The last Ivy Intellectual elected President (twice) was Woodrow Wilson, and that created all sorts of problems for us, and the World.
This one seems no better; and if current trends continue, could cause even greater discomfort, dislocation, and death!

DRJ – I think his typical modesty prevented him from giving himself a higher grade. He couldn’t fix all the problems George Bush left him in just one year, but he sure did try. After all he said if he got health care reform done he would raise it to an A-.

It was a shrewd move on his part. If he gives himself an “A” then he sends the message both to progressives and to moderates that this is exactly how he wants to do things. Both sides would likely flip out; progressives because they don’t think he has been activist enough and moderates because they think he has gone on a big government binge. By giving himself a “B+” he allows himself some wiggle room so that all parts of the Obama coalition will believe that Dear Leader will attune himself more with their agenda in the coming year.

  12. JVW,

I can see that as the best choice for an interim grade, but I think it would have been shrewder to say it it’s too early for grades or it isn’t about grades, it’s about continuing to work to get things done for Americans. Those responses are more in keeping with his carefully crafted persona of being above it all. Grades remind us that he’s simply a student who is learning on the job, and that’s not the image he wants people to think of.

  13. I think his willingness to give himself a high grade just speaks to his natural arrogance and self-importance. It would have indeed been far more shrewd to deflect and at least give an appearance of humility, but I think the opportunity to *not* self-promote is simply beyond his capabilities. It’s reminiscent of him presumptuously wanting to speak at the Brandenburg Gate.

It sounds like you might agree with Sarkozy’s naive egotist opinion of Obama and you may be right.

  16. He’s delaying the closing of Guantanamo until right before the 2012 campaign kicks off, so that him ‘keeping his campaign promise’ will be fresh in the minds of the voters.

Maybe his promises about gays in the mililtary & gay marriage will be kept at about the same time.

  17. Let’s see, 2011, that would be what, more than half-way through his (hopefully single) term, right?

The simplest promise he made, one which he could do on his own authority, and it takes more than two years?

  18. NYT is reporting the amount of time, effort and money that is needed to make the move work…

“But in interviews this week, officials estimated that it could take 8 to 10 months to install new fencing, towers, cameras and other security upgrades before any transfers take place. Such construction cannot begin until the federal government buys the prison from the State of Illinois.

The federal Bureau of Prisons does not have enough money to pay Illinois for the center, which would cost about $150 million. Several weeks ago, the White House approached the House Appropriations Committee and floated the idea of adding about $200 million for the project to the military spending bill for the 2010 fiscal year, according to administration and Congressional officials.

But Democratic leaders refused to include the politically charged measure in the legislation. When lawmakers approved the bill on Dec. 19, it contained no financing for Thomson.”

Someone please remind me of why this move needs to be made?

  20. Why go to all the trouble, change the name of GITMO to GITLESS, save a ton of money, meet the deadline, and Teh One can say whatever his handlers put up on the teleprompter. Who cares anymore, or who even listens to Jughead’s idiot blather?

Chris Matthews can tell us all over again what an inspiring leader Obama is, and how little school children ought to study Obama’s pontifications. They’ll appreciate the break from singing about happy tractor drivers and the end of racism in America.

Think it over, the jihadis stay locked up, taxpayers save money, Obama can claim whatever his conscience will allow, and MSM can continue to duck Climategate and have something other than Democrat corruption to talk about. It’s a clear win/win/win.
