TMZ Hounding Sarah Palin

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:30 am

She ended up cutting a Hawaii vacation short:

Sarah Palin announced Thursday night that she ended a Hawaii vacation early because of the ruckus raised after she blacked out “McCain” on her sun visor in an effort to elude paparazzi.

After the former Alaska governor was photographed on the beach earlier this week, TMZ.com portrayed the visor marking as a slight of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), her running mate last year.

Palin, in the midst of a book tour for her million-selling “Going Rogue,” released this statement:

“In an attempt to ‘go incognito,’ I Sharpied the logo out on my sun visor so photographers would be less likely to recognize me and bother my kids or other vacationers.

It wasn’t enough to drag her through the mud during the election. It wasn’t enough to continue the birth canal inspection afterwards.

These people are going to hound her and her family for the rest of their lives, aren’t they?

  1. I wonder which Breitbart BIG website TMZ will get exposed on?

  2. ““In an attempt to ‘go incognito,’ I Sharpied the logo out on my sun visor so photographers would be less likely to recognize me and bother my kids or other vacationers.”

Incognito? Is she this dumb or does she think we are?

  3. Lefties love to hate Palin. They bring her up as a put down of conservatives. When I get asked about her, I say that she is not my choice for president but that I would take her over any Democrat. It drives them crazy.

  4. imd-dummy,

in your case, you are dumb. I wonder if in the archives there’s a post of you screaming bloody murder about the clothes purchased for Sarah?

imd-dummy, we get that you will never be civil or decent towards Palin. Now, shut up before we treat you as you treat Palin.

    PCD (1d8b6d)

  5. “in your case, you are dumb.”

A sharpied out mccain logo on a visor is ‘incognito’? Seriously?

“imd-dummy, we get that you will never be civil or decent towards Palin.”

I do love her twitter feed. But I do admit to looking up the Urban Dictionary definition of “going rogue.”

  6. One the one hand, Sarah Palin chose to step into the public spotlight for better or worse. On the other hand, it is interesting how the taxpayer would pay for Barack Obama or George Bush to have airtight security were they on a Hawaiian vacation, yet Sarah Palin, now a private citizen, is on her own.

  7. That’s imdw, vulgar when he isn’t just acting like a clown.

  8. Going incognito doesn’t have to mean disguising yourself. It includes little steps to not drawing attention to yourself.

My dad ran for a state senate seat in Indiana once. I thought that was cool, even though he had no chance. But after he was defeated I wasn’t going to go around wearing the old campaign stuff. And being a nobody, I wasn’t a target for paparrazi either. But it would just feel creepy to keep wearing the stuff from our personal defeat.

What I think is more interesting, and says more about her character, is that she still had the old visor and chose to mark out the logo rather than throw it away. I wish more people in government would have that spirit of making do, rather than wanting new stuff all the time.

  9. If it was Obama, he and Michelle would have spent a half billion dollars to get a “incognito outfit” that would have been featured on the cover of GQ.

    Neo (7830e6)

  10. They will not leave her alone until they are 100% sure she will no longer be effective in public life.

On the other hand, the more they scrutinize ever nit-picky thing, the more the public will be immunized against being bothered by it, like Obama telling about his drug use ahead of time, so it became old hat by the time he was a candidate for president.

As I said once long ago, once you are wet, you’re unstoppable in a water fight, as the worst that can happen already has.

Of course, the Palin haters will not be limited by what is true, so they will always be able to make something else up.

    e.g.-
“She ‘had to’ try to re-use the visor, they’re broke from legal fees defending her ethics abuses.”
“She’s so dumb she didn’t realize it would just attract more attention.”
“What a cheap-skate, I bet she makes her staff re-use the toilet paper.”
“She must be rich, a family vacation in Hawaii?”
“She’s unemployed now, where does she get all the money for a vacation to Hawaii?”
“I bet she’s in Hawaii to look into the stuff those crazy birthers say, and the ‘Family Vacation’ is just a front.”
“Why couldn’t she have used that carbon footprint to go to Copenhagen and help save the planet?”
“Why doesn’t she go home and stay quiet, doesn’t she realize how much energy and money is wasted by people following her around?”
“Doesn’t she realize how many bytes of info on the Internet are used up by people arguing about her?”

  11. I cannot wait until Sarah Palin is President.

She will be. She isn’t intimidated by the idiot main stream press and she calls it like she sees it.

She can wear whatever. What does it matter? The libtards are going to hound her for forever, but it DOESN’T MATTER!!! She doesn’t care.

    GO SARAH!!!

    Charlotte (dad663)

  12. If this kind of harassment keeps up, I’m almost tempted to want her to run, just to give all of these creeps the ultimate FU.

  18. bill-tb – Sarah Palin’s hat is a more important issue than the failure of the climate change talks in Copenhagen or health insurance reform in Washington. Get with the program. The media needs distraction. Next they’ll be reporting that Willow got knocked up by a Hawiian dude or something.

  23. The democrats, and the entire left wing crowd, operate on the mental level of Pre-School special needs students so don’t expect any improvement from them. Hundreds of thousand of dollars are spent over a period of years on each special needs student and you end up with what you started with. It carries over to the Ivy League colleges where a student spends five years and leave with a net loss of knowledge (study and test of Harvard/Yale students). Anything over $1 per year at any liberal institution is a waste of money, but it gets the dummies out of daddy’s house. The USC study which indicated that 47/48% of Americans are, or should be, under the care of a mental health professional is a match for the % that always vote democrat, even when a know nothing anti-american criminal is running for POTUS. In his case you got your dollars worth, but you can do that from any McDonalds $1 menu.

  27. the politico boycott is over?

“I am so sorry if people took this silly incident the wrong way. I adore John McCain, support him 100 percent and will do everything I can to support his reelection. As everyone knows, I was honored and proud to run with him. And Todd and I were with him in D.C. just a week ago.

Why is Palin supporting McCain’s re-election? He’s a climate change pansy and also he has a record of opposing oil drilling which means he has a record of opposing jobs.

And why would we put someone who can’t even plan a vacation into our little White House?

Jeez this little country is setting the bar really low for being pezzydent I think, but then again this little country isn’t what it was, is it? Maybe Sarah Palins really are the future.

    happyfeet (71f55e)

  28. She shouldn’t have reacted to it – only fuels the feeding frenzy.
Nor should she be surprised people take these kind of photos: The Clintons in that awkward dance on the beach while on vacation after the Lewinsky affair, Obama looking not so manly sans shirt, Kerry windsurfing and the photo which made it look as if he was dining alone while in Iraq (later proved to be inaccurate). Could be mistaken but I don’t think they personally dignified the photos with comments.
Don’t know much about TMZ but aren’t they basically a tabloid type news outfit?

    voiceofreason2 (a0f965)

  29. legal insurrection also posted a picture one you sure not to see in the msm. it was one of her and Trigg

    happyfeet (71f55e)

  31. Hello, all of those other pictures weredeliberately staged, the first was right before the Lewinsky unpleasantness, as for planning a vacation, what she didn’t tell anyone she was going to be there,
she is a private citizen with some pointed opinions that happen to be correct, it’s remarkable the way
that even people putatively on our side, take the bait. Maybe we deserve Obama and all the despotism
and suppression he wants to rain down on us.

    bishop (474138)

  32. you know, bluntly, if you run as veep, you can’t really expect to have very much privacy. sucks, yeah, but she should have known that going in.

and note, that is not a justification for most of the other visciousness that has been flung at her. but as best as i can tell, this is all an objection to photographing her at the beach, and that is just par for the course.

  37. Of course, the abuse of Sarah Palin and her children is nothing compared to the vicious hatred the media employs against Barack Obama, and his two daughters.

    ropelight (ea218a)

  38. There is an abiding irony, in how the world’s most comtemptous, arrogant, elitist, is presented as a man of the people, and a resolute, if somewhat civil servant is framed as some arrogant diva at best, evil demagogue at worst, a bug not a feature I know

    bishop (474138)

  39. The Left screams bloody murder over Palin’s sunvisor while riding us into the ground with record deficits, record unemployment, failed foreign policy, record bank failures, record business failures, failing dollar, plummeting poll numbers on their leadership, bills passed in the middle of the night to trick us, climategate, fake Congressional districts invented to make their failed TARP and job stimulus numbers look good, a President who golfed more in his first nine months than Bush did in three years, a civil war in their own party, promises to give billions for a global warming lie when the country is broke, a safe schools czar with pedophile-friendly connections – and they’re WORRIED ABOUT PALIN’S SUNVISOR??

    Metallica (e4735c)

  40. Why does the left hate Palin so? Do they think she is stupid? What about Biden, then? Do they think she is a phoney? (target overload, here) What about Kerry, Schumer, Blogo, Frank, etc. Do they think she would try to control private aspects of their lives? What about Obama, Reid, Pelosi?

    Why the hate?

    quasimodo (4af144)

  41. Hate is a mask for fear.

    ropelight (ea218a)

  42. That’s odd–I Sharpied out McCain’s name on my sun visor, too.

    Official Internet Data Office (0a4bf0)

  43. We just have to face facts about Sarah v. MSM- they WILL hound her for any opportunity to belittle her.

She needs a politically aware staffer who oversees her very meals and dress and PR releases. That way, the MSM will have fewer chances to bash her. Just a fact of life for a conservative/populist Republican.

    John425 (eae6ea)

  44. I DEMAND to see the sharpie, to know what financial arrangements she has made with Sharpie, and to know why she is using a word that rhymes with quickie.

    Amphipolis (b120ce)

  45. Harvey Levin is a scumbag.

    Chris (ded5f2)

  46. Of course Sarah continues to be unfairly and ruthlessly hounded by the idiot media. But, at the same time, couldn’t she have bought a cheap new sun visor, and shouldn’t she have just rolled her eyes and ignored– rather than reacting to the sharpie thing? It’s not always easy to tell when she wants attention and when she doesn’t.

She could have easily avoided, or at least muted some of this latest vacation controversy I think.

    elissa (a516eb)

  47. #38…Metallica…

    FOR THE WIN!!!

    Charlotte (dad663)

  48. Yes, Palin should have bought a new sun visor and donated the old McCain visor to charity–for the benefit of disadvantaged inner-city children who have to go to bed at night without sun visors.

    Official Internet Data Office (0a4bf0)

  49. “…couldn’t she have bought a cheap new sun visor,”

(Stop it #48, you’re a tough act to follow.)

Yes, but, woman from Alaska on a December vacation in Hawaii with an infant and other children to look after isn’t likely to have her domestic staff around to see to minor tasks, or to have her political advisers in attendance to protect her from imaginary controversies.

Palin wanted to keep the sun out of her eyes and she didn’t want McCain’s name on her forehead, so instead of going shopping, she improvised with what she had at hand. Better to reuse than to recycle.

    ropelight (ea218a)

  50. It’s not like Palin can just drive to Wal Mart and grab a visor when she realizes she needs one. That would be an even bigger ‘scandal’.

Those Mccain visors were actually pretty, nice, too. Why throw it away? She wasn’t trying to pretend it wasn’t a campaign swag… she was just making do in a simple way.

You won’t see Obama’s kids having their vacation cut short because of TMZ freaking out about Michelle’s belts. Must be nice for them.

    Dustin (44f8cb)

  51. I feel bad for her, and I can’t believe the networks picked up this story.

But she is making pretty good money being a bit of a celebrity right now, and the paparazzi comes with the territory. You can wish it doesn’t, but it does.

    MayBee (63bf2b)

  52. I kinda like the idea of taking a magic marker to McCain’s.

    quasimodo (4af144)

  53. @Dustin “she was just making do in a simple way”

I have no problem whatsoever with her reusing the old campaign visor. In fact, I admire that she did wear the darn thing. I am a big recycle/reuse fanatic myself. Where she went wrong IMO was, if she indeed did NOT want attention on the beach, if she DID want to keep it simple, then so obviously messing with McCain’s name on it with the sharpie– and then doing the whole “oh, no, I really looove and respect McCain” schtick–seems kind of lame.

    elissa (a516eb)

  54. Idiot Monkey Diaper Wearer burbled: Is she this dumb or does she think we are?
    — In your case, dude, if the “dumb” fits . . .
It’s comical watching your lefty programming kick in. ‘Palin said something. Must counteract. Must counter-act!’

A sharpied out mccain logo on a visor is ‘incognito’? Seriously?
    — Well, you sure caught her there. Yes, indeedy! She overused the word “incognito”. Perhaps she might borrow a mask from one of Michael Jackson’s kids next time, to eliminate any chance of her being recognized.

I didn’t think of this possibility
    — Feel free to begin each one of your posts with those first three words. In fact, how about making “I didn’t think” your new screen name?

[or, “Kos & HuffPo think for me”; or, “Why think, when it’s so much more fun to react?”; or, “Palin is ALWAYS wrong”; or, “I want my NANNY-state!”; or, “Uncommon sense for the collective good”; or, “AlGore was right! Just wait patiently for the next cyclical warming trend & I’ll prove it to you”; or, . . .]

    Icy Texan (086a9d)

  55. elissa, are you really John Edwards gone incognito?

‘Cause you kinda sound like a lefty ‘blame the victim’ lawyer. 😉

    Icy Texan (086a9d)

  56. elissa, I just think it’s silly to read too much into it.

I also think it’s lame that she adores Mccain, to be honest. But she’s actually being very classy to do that. She would get some points from many if she didn’t, but it would be disloyal and fracture the party more.

Of course she should have expected scribbling out Mccain’s name would lead to some seeing this as a minor insult, but she’s so consistently praising Mccain that it’s not a big deal. Just a cheapskate using a nice hat without embarrassing herself (I think she would look ridiculous with the logo).

Of course, she lost part of her family vacation, so this can’t have been a good choice. But it was the paparazzi following her around everywhere that screwed up her vacation. If it wasn’t this hat, it would have been something else.

This woman will never get to wear a bathing suit outside again. At Hawaii, that’s got to suck. She made this choice to enter the public arena, but I really hate that TMZ and its like are hellbent on keeping normal people from entering politics.

    Dustin (44f8cb)

  57. imdw keeps passing all these extremely vulgar stories. The left doesn’t want to take Palin on strictly for her policy views. They don’t sexualize Bush or Cheney or Romney… they sexualize any woman who has the gall to leave the second plantation.

It’s not enough to disagree with her, imdw and his large swelling mass of little liberals have to send a message to pretty girls that they are not allowed to oppose Obama.

And that, of course, is how Palin is so much more powerful than her experience or policy positions might suggest she should be. She’s playing imdw like a fiddle.

    Dustin (44f8cb)

  58. We could have some fun with this. What would you like to see on Palin’s sun visor? Here’s a few:

    Real Men Don’t Eat Arugula!
    Letterman Loves Interns
Spare the Polar Bears and Pass the Moose Burgers
    Alaskan Chicks Rule in Waikiki
    Palin Eats Poi!
    Mele Kaliki Maka

    ropelight (ea218a)

  59. Won’t this all be a non-issue once she is surrounded by the Secret Service?

    sybilll (8a76f0)

  60. Well she wore shorts and a shirt, much like she did in Miami, before the RGA conference. It is her conviction and experience, derided by some, much
more then those superstars like Arnold & Mitt (sarc)
    that commend her.

    bishop (474138)

  61. These people are going to hound her and her family for the rest of their lives, aren’t they?

Oh brother. Someone else looking for a free pass for Palin. She got one during the debate and when she ducked all interviews during the campaign except for three (and blew two of those).

Sarah Palin’s not a private citizen. She’s a publicity-seeker who might run again for high office again (shudder) and who in the mean time writes absolute trash for the Washington Post. So yeah, they’re going to “hound her” or, as others would say, cover her every movement.

TMZ doesn’t care about her whining any more than it cares about people whining about the Tiger coverage. That’s what they do.

Gossip sells and she’s a hot property. The country is to blame for why an empty vessel such as Palin is a hot property; not TMZ.

At minimum, it was ghetto for her to black out the “McCain” on the cap. Didn’t she make millions on that book? Buy a new cap, Sarah Barracuda. It won’t break you.

Anyway, who even lets something that dumb bother her and gets into a pissing match with TMZ? She needs to learn to ignore some things. It’s only going to get worse.

    Myron (6a93dd)

  62. “Alaska’s climate is warming. While there have been warming and cooling trends before, climatologists tell us that the current rate of warming is unprecedented within the time of human civilization. Many experts predict that Alaska, along with our northern latitude neighbors, will warm at a faster pace than any other areas, and the warming will continue for decades.”

    — Sarah Palin, another climate-change pansy (that is, before she felt the need to shamelessly pander to the teabaggers)

    Myron (6a93dd)

  63. Wonder how much that now famous visor could fetch on EBay—maybe for Charity.

    elissa (a516eb)

  64. Myron, Palin’s been very consistent on climate change. Pandering? She notes that the climate is changing, points to how she’s handled it and how others should handle it, without damaging our economy.

That she doesn’t deny the climate is changing, and that she is skeptical that man is causing all of it, is a very intelligent position.

She didn’t get a free pass in the debates. Obama’s best friend, and financially involved Gewn Ifill moderated that debate. That’s like Glenn Beck moderating the debate. Free pass, my ass. You just don’t like that she, yet again, makes the left look desperate to attack her personally instead of stick to the debate.

That’s a theme these days, right? That’s what you meant by tea-baggers, right? that you think scrotum sucking is a relevant joke when people say they are taxed enough already?

You lose, man, when you go down this road. You have a choice to not help Palin get elected, and you’re making the wrong one.

    Dustin (44f8cb)

I knew it was only a matter of time before Lord Haw Haw slimed an entire group of independent voters across the country. Tell us, Lord HH – what does the term “tea bagger” mean, and where did it originate. Please detail the exact meaning of the slang, if you please.

    Dmac (a964d5)

  67. Um…

    “…shamelessly pander to the teabaggers…”

First, tres classy, Myron. You are certainly all sophisticated and superior to those nasty insulting right wingers! Nice one! Very original, too, since you have used that expression quite a bit recently.. I wonder why?

    Oh, that’s right:

    http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2009/12/16/wsjnbc-news-poll-tea-party-tops-democrats-and-republicans/

Also, I found your use of the term “teabaggers” close to the term “shamelessly pander” pretty ironic.

But then, you are just trollin’ around, using that phrase, aren’t you? Those polls must really sting.

So why not insult the people with whom you disagree…and in particular, in such a mature and elegant style? Again, very, very classy!

    Eric Blair (0b61b2)

  68. Lord HH also displays a stunning fear of a strong woman who could beat him like a pansy if he actually mouthed off to her in person. Only true Girlie Men (and those with no gonads) say this kind of crap to women who don’t show fealty to their extreme wussified view of the female gender.

Look Moron, it’s a girl! Eeeek! Run, Moron, ruuuuuun!

    Dmac (a964d5)

  69. Eric, we only have to wait a few moments before the pansy one will leap to his imaginary high perch of morality and accuse others of calling the poor dear those nasty, nasty names. All the while calling others liars and teabaggers, of course. I’m taking bets that not only has he never held an actual job in the private sector or kissed a girl (we already know he’d never get within 100 yards of a woman), he’s somewhere in the back room of his local post office, licking stamps.

    Dmac (a964d5)

  70. What is with these people, Dmac? I mean, they criticize the Right for doing something, and then they do it themselves. But that’s different, somehow.

As POTUS starts showing his true colors, I think that the True Believers are going to get even crazier and more hypocritical.

I expect that from poltroons like Joy Behar. A Party of Behars, maybe?

    Eric Blair (0b61b2)

  71. Poltroons is too kind, Eric – but this is no different then what we’ve come to expect since the past 8 years of BooosHitler. A large part of the country wasn’t paying attention to these loons before, because things were pretty much OK for most of them. Now that they’ve voted in the cast of Noises Off, they’re finally getting a full dose of just what they bought with their pig in a poke. As Obama gets the kind of approval ratings you’d normally see in totalitarian states, you’re correct in your assumption that this is going to get quite a bit worse.

    Dmac (a964d5)

  72. I think when she’s in office and has Secret Service protection, the hounders will be kept at bay somewhat.

It would be impolite for him to speak with his mouth full.

  74. If, in the eyes of the Left, Bush = Hitler; will Sarah Palin, when she is President, be equated with Lucretia Borgia?

    AD - RtR/OS! (855ace)

  75. I don’t know about that particular comparison, but there has been a fair attempt to paint her as Aime
Semple McPherson, if people knew who that was.

  76. At minimum, it was ghetto for her to black out the “McCain” on the cap. Didn’t she make millions on that book? Buy a new cap, Sarah Barracuda. It won’t break you.

Notice how Moron uses a slur on the poor Democrat voters who elected his man-crush.

  77. Sweetness and Light, compared to the Machiavellian Femme Fatale (Correction: Lucrezia); but no less a religious person, seeing as how her father was Pope Alexander VI.

  79. i find it hysterical that just about *anything* Sarah does draws a massively unhinged reaction from all the usual suspects.

she appears to be in the process of inoculating the sane portion of the population by stimulating the moonbats to froth at every turn. by the time she runs for office again, the middle will be ready to ignore the morons on the left and the MFM (but i repeat myself %-), and listen to her message.

  80. be equated with Lucretia Borgia?

Either that, or a modern – day Medusa. Come to think of it, when the Left does look at her, they turn into pillars of sh-t.

  81. Myron just continues to make up stuff.

  82. Would it be that we had a president whose biggest controversy was over what kind of sun visor to wear.

  83. I don’t think it was ghetto at all for her to black out the name. It’s kinda funny, and it’s part of her obvious effort to pretend she’s middle class. Wearing that same red jacket for a while, getting it in our heads that she is like most women (before auctioning it off), and now wearing an old, but comfy hat, instead of throwing it away, sends a message. Probably an accident, but this ‘ghetto’ think Myron is talking about is something John Kerry or John Edwards or Michelle Obama would never do… keep old clothes instead of throw them away.

I’m sure money isn’t an issue anymore for her wardrobe, but did it hurt her to look cheap in her wardrobe? Not really.

  84. Hey, he’s doing his myronic best … under ADA, we should be giving him a break, should we not ?

  86. She’s down to earth, unlike the current occupant, of the White House, who genuinely cares about the path we are on, Before last august, she was always photographed in Carhart overalls,

    bishop (474138)

  87. Palin keeping the hat and blacking out McCain is completely consistent with her lifestyle. She was known to be a regular at Wasilla consignment shops for clothing, which is common with large families. Just because she earned a million dollars on her book, does not mean that her basic way of life and what she considers important will change. She never appeared to care about looking fashion forward, aside the RNC’s push during the campaign, so making a thrifty decision is about what people should expect her to do.

Along with that though, knowing the viciousness of a the insatiable press, she should be continually aware that anything and everything is or can be exploited and used against her. No matter if it is something as insanely stupid and insignificant as this.

    Dana (f64b7d)

  88. No, She’s not going to change, arguably she made the statement because despite everything she really
respects McCain (I can’t figure it out either,) and she didn’t like the inconvenience, Maybe she is not cutthroat and cynical enough for big time politics, that would be our loss

    bishop (474138)

  89. redc1c4 #85 – hey, I’ve had 4 daughters – and, when necessary, we cut up their chops for them, since they were not capable of doing so themselves … busting their chops seems a bit over-the-top …

I’m sure Myron is capable of expertise in something – even if he consistently hides it amazingly well …

    Alasdair (41df69)

  90. “Hundreds of thousand of dollars are spent over a period of years on each special needs student and you end up with what you started with.”

Scrapiron, you are a grade A, certifed a-hole without even two brain-cells to rub together. You need help even more than the ‘special needs kids.’

    JEA (1a9417)

  91. When the McCain campaign bought new clothes for Palin, the loony left was outraged. When Palin does not buy a new visor but economizes by recycling something old, the loonly left is outraged. It does not matter what she does, the loonly left will be outraged. (I like the fact that she recycled the visor–it suggests that she has the values that will be needed to cut spending. Those who cannot economize with their own money are rarely able to economize with other people’s money.)
