Ingram Wins Heisman Trophy

University of Alabama sophomore tailback Mark Ingram won the 2009 Heisman Trophy in the closest Heisman race ever — just 28 points separated Ingram and Stanford’s Toby Gerhart:

“Ingram received 227 first-place votes and 1,304 points. Gerhart got 222 first-place votes and 1,276 points, while Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, last season’s runner-up, received 203 and 1,145.

Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was fourth and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, who won the Heisman two years ago, was fifth.”

Ingram has been impressive and is a deserving winner, but I would have picked Suh to finish higher than 4th. I was also surprised this is the first time an Alabama player has won the Heisman.

  1. I would have voted for Suh but they don’t let me vote.

I watched the Army-Navy game today and had fun watching Ali Vellanueva, Army’s 6 foot 10 inch, 300 pound flanker. He is amazing. When they finally started throwing to him in the fourth quarter, he caught a bunch of passes. Last year he was an offensive tackle. The new coach asked him to try the position. When asked why, he said, “When you stand up, you’re open.” He is amazing.

He plays three other sports and is going out for swimming this spring. His father is in the Spanish navy.

  2. Well, I wish I could say I’m related to him, but I’m not.

Hell, I’d settle for a smidgeon of his athletic prowess, but I wasn’t blessed with that either.

Anyway, congratulations to him for winning the Heisman!

  3. I grew up on Bear Bryant football and none of his plays ever won the Heisman. I thought about this quote of his when I heard that Mark Ingram had won, “Alabama players don’t win Heisman Trophies, Bama Teams win national championships”

  4. Congrats to Mark Ingram on winning the Heisman. Now on to the National Championship. Hook ‘Em Horns!

  6. It is a shame that the Heisman has turned into the “Offensive MVP” trophy and not the best college football player of the year. Suh was, IMHO, the best college football player of the year. This guy will have an immediate and lasting impact in the pros.

  7. I am a Husker follower and fan, but was afraid that Suh had not been promoted enough by the Husker Nation until too late in the season for him to break the precedent that no defensive lineman need apply for the Heisman.

Turned into? The offensive bent is right there on the trophy. And this dates from an era when many of the best players played on both sides of the ball. The fix was in long ago. It’s a shock when defensive stars are even mentioned, much less get the trophy. But these things are of not much interest to some of us, if not outright disdain. Never cared for Bryant much, but I’ll go with his team approach every time with football. Whoever wins, wins on the backs of his teammates. Even kickers need a holder and some blockers. You want the sole spotlight, go swim or play tennis.

  9. I hate the Huskers (although their fans are great), and I think Suh got jobbed. Ingram’s great, but this is like Jason White winning the Heisman over Larry Fitzgerald.

  10. If they were going to make it a running back, it should have been Gerhart.

  11. Am I the only one who was amazed to find out he’s the 1st player from Alabama to win?

  12. So Ingram won the Heisman? Wow, a conservative radio talk show host can…

    What?

    Not Laura? Mark?

OHHH…yeah that makes more sense, I thought her 40 times were a bit slow to be a Div I running back.

  13. Heisman?? He’s not even the best running back. There is no way you can compare what he did and what Gerhart did. The Pac 10 was better this year than the SEC — offense AND defense. Gerhart shredded excellent Pac 10 defenses this year when everyone knew exactly what was coming.

The Pac 10 was 6-0 in bowl games last year. This year it has 7 teams playing, and I would be surprised if they were less than 5-2.
