Roman Polanski has been released to rough it in his 19,000 square foot $4.5M Swiss chalet:

“After more than two months in a Swiss jail, a Reuters journalist saw Polanski in one of two cars which swept past some 200 reporters and into the garage of the film director’s luxury home in the upmarket ski resort of Gstaad.

“Roman Polanski was today released from custody pending extradition and transferred to Gstaad, where he is under house arrest at his chalet,” the Swiss government said in a statement.”

  1. 19,000 square feet? Horrible. And there I had thought that the Swiss extended more humane treatment to their priosners.

Seriously, Polanski will never face California justice. He has too much money and he knows too many influential people who will prevent it. He might be inconvenienced a little bit but he will go on enjoying his money and lifestyle. And that’s the way things is.

  2. Those cute little Swiss. They’re just neutral on everything, aren’t they? Their version of ‘arrest’ seems to be “Be a good little boy now, and don’t let me catch you leaving the chalet!”

  3. P.S. Which, BTW, is not necessarily a bad thing to make law and government irrelevant to you. Eh, Ayn Rand fans?

  4. P.P.S. Maybe I wronged the lady (Ayn Rand). Maybe inventing a super-metal and running off to Idaho was a metaphor for knowing Carla Bruni.

  5. He won’t be able to add a minaret, however.

  6. nk, you are truly an enigma. I have tried to read you but I cannot get an accurate reading. The needle on my device swings back and forth to both limits as if it were on steroids.

And, for the record, I posit that “a concerned conservative” is neither concerned nor conservative.

  7. Mr. Frey, could you comment on the status of the extradition? Is someone dragging their feet on this?

  8. I wonder, if he flees to France, do the Swiss and the French have an extradition treaty?

  9. How are the snow conditions between his hovel and the French border? And, how good a cross-country skier is he?

He will become “lost” on a ski outing before the month is out, and find himself in France, never to return.

  10. Today’s Roman numerals- 19,000 and 4,500,000. A lot of ex,vee, ayes in his life right now. Maybe some cross bars to top-and-bottom them all off in the future.
