William Jefferson Sentenced

[Guest post by DRJ]

Former Louisiana Democratic Congressman William Jefferson has been sentenced to 13 years in prison:

“William Jefferson, the former U.S. congressman caught with $90,000 in marked currency stuffed in his freezer, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for using his office to solicit bribes.

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III in Alexandria, Virginia, today sentenced Jefferson, more than three months after a federal jury here found him guilty on 11 of 16 counts. He had faced as many as 20 years on each conviction.”

Jefferson is 62 so he could theoretically be in prison until he’s 75.

  1. Good riddance. And Bloomberg (and the Times) both used the (D) word, albeit in the 4th paragraph.

Is parole and early release a possibility? Does the Holder Justice Dept have any influence here?

  2. Good point, Manly Dad. I’ve added that Jefferson is a Democratic Congressman. I don’t know whether he would be eligible for parole, but I assume he will appeal and the court may allow him to remain free while the appeal is pending.

  4. Riddance !!! ?

He will be re-elected once he is out of the prison.

Read about Adam Clayton Powell and the serving Congressman, Alcee Hastings.

The pathology of that segment of our electorate is not subject to logic.

  5. And don’t forget how the D.C. crowd adored cokehead mayor Marion Berry after his downfall. Or Philly mayor Street’s malfeasance to name just one other dirtbag pol. So as not to be putting down only the poor black man, what ever happened to the screwy white Ohio Congressman who did make it to prison garb?

The sad part is that we take it as normal that a sentence to n years makes it only “theoretically possible” that the person will be in prison for n years.
