Virginia Election 2009
[Guest post by DRJ]
The polls closed in Virginia about an hour ago and early results show Republicans taking the lead in the races for Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General:
“Republican Bob McDonnell held an early lead in the race to become the 71st governor of Virginia today.
First Virginia Board of Elections results showed McDonnell leading Democrat R. Creigh Deeds by a wide margin.
In most recent polls McDonnell was favored to win by a landslide.
His Republican running mates, Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, seeking re-election, and Attorney General candidate Ken Cuccinelli, also are leading in early returns over their Democratic opponents: Jody Wagner for lieutenant governor and Stephen C. Shannon for attorney general.”
CNN is updating the returns in the Virginia Governor’s race here.
McDonnell and Deed have run against each other before — 4 years ago when McDonnell defeated Deeds for attorney general by a mere 360 votes. Unlike 4 years ago, this race is projected as an easy GOP win so it’s a good thing President Obama and his staff aren’t planning to watch tonight’s election returns.

UPDATE: AP, NBC, CBS, and Fox News call the Governor’s race for McDonnell at 9:10 PM EST. ABC and CNN have banner headlines with same result.
I’ve updated the post to show all the major networks have called the Governor’s race for McDonnell.
DRJ (dff2ca) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:15 pmHow’d the tea partyu candidate do? oh thats right 861 votes
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:17 pmBrace yourself for another bout of incoherency from EPWJ.
Brother Bradley J. Fikes, C.O.R. (a2b7fe) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:19 pmHoustons Mayors race is neck and neck
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:20 pmThis election is no reflection on Barcky. None. Zero. Zip. Nada. Local local local is all it is.
JD (6dce29) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:29 pmrealclearpolitics is ALMOST calling the governors race – saying exit polling 58% of the independents are voting for Christie. Said it was now just about impossible for Corzine to win
http://realclearpolitics.blogs.time.com/2009/11/03/election-night-live-blog/
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:31 pmDidn’t McDonnell run against Deeds before? The numbers I have seen have McDonnell upwards of 60% of the vote, so this is not just a win, but an asskicking.
JD (6dce29) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:31 pmhttp://elections.nj.com/dynamic/files/elections/2009/by_state/NJ_Page_1103.html?SITE=NJNEWELN&SECTION=POLITICS
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:39 pmJD
McDonnell beat deeds by only 360 votes last time the two met
Yes it is an asskicking
I do find it interesting that the ACP write in candidate has less than 2000 votes
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:40 pmYou voting prescient, DRJ? How can the call be made at 9:10pm EST when it’s only 8:40pm there now? Or am I messin’ up my timezone math?
ras (caaeea) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:41 pmI had the same thought, ras…
With 3% reporting (180 of 6305) Christie leads the NJ race 49% to Corzine’s 43%…
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:43 pmI can’t find a place to track results for the NY 23rd
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:44 pmScott
Oh they arent going to release those results until they look and see if they cant steal the election
Its a different world “upstate”
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:46 pmNJ Gov
4% reporting (269 of 6305)
Christie – 55%
Corzine – 38%
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:47 pm5% in
christie has 20,000 vote lead, Tea Party Daggett fading to 6%
Given the drop in black turnout in VA, if the same scenario occurs in Newark, Christie should top 50%
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:48 pmPowerline says exit polls show NJ gov at 46% apiece.
Gerald A (a66d02) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:51 pmIf the exit polls in NJ are accurate then Corzine wins as they find the votes they need either on election night or the “recount”.
Gerald A (a66d02) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:53 pmYeah, NJ’s gonna be a dirty, dirty race, and you’ll see at least one court case over it.
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 5:58 pmPowerline isn’t watching the same results I am, btw. I’m watching at nj.com, and they seem to be running off of the state’s tally.
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:00 pmDo the NJ Dems still have enough time to substitute a more popular candidate?
JD (6dce29) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:01 pm1102 of 6305 Precincts Reporting – 17%
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:03 pmName Party Votes Vote %
Christie, Chris GOP 216,458 52%
Corzine, Jon (i) Dem 171,220 41%
The race hasn’t been certified, JD…
So yes.
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:04 pmhttp://campaignspot.nationalreview.com/post/?q=NjgyMDgwYmFmYTQyODE5M2E5OTQ5ZDZiODAxMzI3ZmI=
Remember, VA was a local race, and does not reflect on Teh One.
JD (6dce29) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:05 pmWell, Deeds WAS pretty much on his own. It’s Corzine that got all of Obama’s attention…
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:09 pmProblems in NY-23 may have lost most of the votes from the second largest countie – the Hill is reporting
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:11 pmHannity is now reporting severe voting problems in NY-23
figures…..
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:13 pmI smell lawsuit in states that begin with New.
JD (6dce29) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:18 pmJD
Dems are already suing saying that Hoffman’s declaration of being a life long Republican invalidated the absentee ballots
According to Hannity a suit has just been filed
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:19 pm…local issues, nothing to do with Obama, move along, move along…
It’s amazing how much something can matter to the WH until it doesn’t.
Kevin Murphy (805c5b) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:20 pmhttp://elections.nj.com/dynamic/files/elections/2009/by_state/NJ_Governor_1103.html?SITE=NJNEWELN&SECTION=POLITICS
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:21 pmVoting machine problems: wouldn’t a paper ballot have worked better given the single office up for election?
Kevin Murphy (805c5b) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:22 pmNot if they already had the machines… Peoria IL, for example, uses machines for all it’s city-wide votes now (at least they did at my poling place).
If the have the machines already, paper ballots would actually be a double waste of money. One for the ballots themselves, and two for the wasted possible use of a machine that wasn’t exactly cheap.
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:24 pmThe lawsuit will be pitched, btw. I fail to see how claiming to be a lifelong Republican can invalidate absentee ballots.
He ran under one party. He’s allowed to be a member of another…
Unless Owens is also breaking a rule…
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:26 pmScott
Yeah thats what they said in Washington State and a winner of a governors race suddenly lost by about 100 votes when a batch of 400 just miraculously arrived
And then there was the out of the park franken Lawsuits that turned him victorious as well…
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:30 pmScott
I dont know declaring you are one party and receiving money from another can lead to lawsuits
EricPWJohnson (bd3301) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:34 pmPeople should be suing Dede for their money back, if that is the case.
JD (6dce29) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:40 pmEric, in that case I hope Owens never got money from both parties he ran for…
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:42 pmThe president isn’t watching the results because he doesn’t care about what the people say. It’s as simple as that.
But every freshman democrat in congress, every blue dog, every governor in a close state… those folks are watching and thinking about their survival.
Obama can’t save them… and he won’t even watch when they succumb to voters resisting zillion dollar deficits and inflation and control. So they had better take care of themselves.
It’s hard to see healthcare passing in any form that would please Nancy or Harry. Thank goodness for special elections.
Dustin (bb61e3) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:43 pmDidn’t Harry Reid say today that he was not sure that they could do healthcare “reform” this year?
JD (6dce29) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:47 pmReid is a terrific minority leader, and an awful uniter. In power, he comes across so badly. Yeah, he’s totally tasted his foot on his promises to get his bill passed. Now, it’s just vaguely on the horizon.
the party of HELL NO! already has plenty to point at the democrat party’s congress and claim disaster. Their mission is relatively easy. Stop legislation… that alone would be a tremendous service.
Dustin (bb61e3) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:52 pmElection Results: New Jersey governor

WASHINGTON (CNN) – With only 44 percent of the precincts reporting, Republican Chris Christie is leading over Democrat Jon Corzine.
The optimistic Dana (474dfc) — 11/3/2009 @ 6:59 pmHmmm, the live preview showed the special characters working, but they don’t show up in the comment. At any rate, with 44% reporting, Chris Christie leads Jon Corzine 50% to 44%.
The blogger Dana (474dfc) — 11/3/2009 @ 7:01 pmEverybody’s calling it for Christie.
Gerald A (a66d02) — 11/3/2009 @ 7:39 pmI don’t see any news articles about it, but the Virginia State Board of Elections has results for the House of Delegates (all 100 seats up for election). My count is Republicans gained 5 seats, 58 to 40 with 2 independents who apparently usually caucus with the Republicans.
When I lived in New York, the state used lever action (mechanical counter) voting machines. This is worse than punch cards in that there is NO audit trail for individual votes of any sort; it seemed to me this could be open to fraud. New York was supposed to replace them with something else (they took money from the Feds to do so), but googling around it appears NYS is still using them for this election.
Sam (e7d618) — 11/3/2009 @ 8:07 pmAP, NBC, CBS, and Fox News call the Governor’s race for McDonnell at 9:10 PM EST.
Nice.
Now, only one thing needs to be said: No RINO crap, please.
Blacque Jacques Shellacque (76097c) — 11/3/2009 @ 8:57 pmSam,
It seems that both parts of VA’s state assembly, and the state’s AG, and the Gov and Lt Gov are all republicans (or Repub controlled).
Enjoy it.
Scott Jacobs (d027b8) — 11/3/2009 @ 9:25 pmScott:
Only the VA House of Delegates was up for election this year. Democrats control the VA Senate by 21 to 19; the last Senate election was in 2007 and I believe the next one is in 2011.
