Celebrity Quote of the Day

Filed under: Miscellaneous — DRJ @ 9:01 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

International pop star Shakira explaining why she anonymously took a history class at UCLA the summer after a successful concert tour:

“When most celebs need a break from the business, they typically take a real vacation. They travel to a remote destination, relax, and clear their minds.

But Shakira said challenging her mind instead was the ideal getaway after the tour.

“It was such a long tour, I needed a break from me,” Shakira told The Guardian. “The universe is so broad, I cannot be at the center of it. So I decided to go to the university and study history for a summer course, just to kind of switch gears, taste the student life.”

For those so inclined, here’s a link to the Shakira video “She Wolf.”

  1. Another twit. Cutie though.

  2. Maybe you’re right but I thought it showed maturity. It’s easy for celebrities to get wrapped up in themselves and she seems to realize that’s not a good thing.

    DRJ (f462b4)

  3. A very refreshing contrast actually. Good for her.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  4. Either way, she’s incredibly flexible in that video.

    F* her.

I told my boss today that I was tired of being the center of the universe and I needed a day off. His response put me back into place as far as my universe-centering. Man, I hope that Obama money gets here soon.

    That was snark.

Heck, I’ll give the kid credit. She wants to learn. Good for her.

    Ag80 (2a7a2a)

  7. I read a bit about her time at UCLA in an article a few years back. Her classmates said that she was very down to earth and approachable. I’ll give her credit for that even if she parrots whatever trendy leftist politics are in vogue in her industry.

    JVW (d1215a)

  8. I say good for her. She’s young but figured out something important on her own and did something about it. She might be uninformed, or unaware that there is more out there than the company line but wanting to learn is a start. A really good start.

    But yes, she’s still young,

In an interview with MTV, she said that sometimes governments do not represent their people nor make the right decisions because “governments are controlled by just a few.” The video and the song ended with a quote from Jimi Hendrix in the back screen of the stage:

“The world will know the peace, when the power of love, overcomes the love for power.”

    Dana (863a65)

  9. F* her.

Weren’t you ever young and dumb?

    Dana (863a65)

  10. Dana,

I was too poor and too aware of human nature to be that f*ing stupid.

31 is not young. Grow the F up.

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  11. Shakira wants to expand her horizons, get a job serving lunches at a restaurant in Queens for a few weeks.

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  12. I was certainly young and dumb. Didn’t know it at the time. I’ve figured out a few things and now I think of myself as less young and less dumb. Everybody’s got to start somewhere.

    Then you were very fortunate.

    Dana (863a65)

  14. Still young and dumb here. Not liberal dumb, though – the last time I wanted that was when I was 18. And then my brother went to the UK for his Masters. As an international student. Paying full rates. And some British twits were protesting the increase in the subsidised uni fees by ~10% or thereabouts. Something like a couple hundred pounds annually.

Been a fiscal conservative ever since then. Been a SoCon well before that time, of course.

    Gregory (f7735e)

  15. That is the problem nowadays in society — we have infantile expectations of those who should be adults.

Any wealthy liberal entertainer who truly wishes to help needs to simply give away all their money. Buy a little house in Yonkers, NY and continue to work hard to give away even more.

At that time, I might actually believe they believe in their infantile visions of a world that never existed and never will.

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  16. Dana,

I was fortunate to have the parents I had. They taught me life’s lessons very young.

I can’t tolerate the BS of “life’s lottery winners” who expect me to fund their nonsense with my money and my freedom.

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  17. HeavenSent,

I’m curious: do you believe that she is infantile because of her political views? Is that what defines being an adult?

She is an independent woman, paying her own way, earning a great living obviously doing what she loves to do. To me she evidences characteristics of maturity and self-reliance.

She may be politically askew still, but I don’t have issue with anyone who pays their own way. She’s still got time to come around. Consider how many people have a political/philosophical shift later in their lives.

    Dana (863a65)

  18. Dana,

I think I called her views infantile.

    Did I write otherwise?

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  19. I was making sure I understood you correctly. That is why I asked and then followed it with the question if that is what you think defines being an adult.

    Dana (863a65)

  20. But yes, I think all individuals who have Leftist views have an infantile view of the world.

  22. Dana,

I have described her views as infantile.

Our POTUS has an infantile view of the world also.

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  23. Dana,

I also believe many Leftists are simply Government Entrepreneurs … like Al Gore, Al Sharpton, Bill Clinton.

They simply espouse these views as a means of accumulating power and wealth by manipulating the populist with nonsense they don’t believe in.

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  24. So aphrael and Leviticus have infantile views?

Please put thought into your answer…

    Scott Jacobs (d027b8)

  28. It is not infantile to have liberal beliefs. I believe it is very wrong-headed. But having liberal beliefs in no way makes a person infantile.

    ^That’s me being nice.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  29. Any wealthy liberal entertainer who truly wishes to help needs to simply give away all their money. Buy a little house in Yonkers, NY and continue to work hard to give away even more.

Why should she have to do that – she worked hard for her money and can spend it and has the freedom to choose to spend it and live any which way she wants. Her political philosophy doesn’t necessary preclude her from helping anyone, anywhere. You don’t know who she’s helped or how. You judge with a pretty broad brush and perhaps unfairly. (I don’t know either but it seems reactive).

I understand your point, though, and you’ve made it clearly. To me, 31 is still young enough to screwed up in one way or another. But apparently you had it figured out earlier on. Not everyone is that fortunate.

    Dana (863a65)

  30. DRJ – Thanks for the post. I read this blog so I can avoid subscribing to People magazine or spend time dawdling in supermarket checkout lines. You made my day.

  32. DRJ – The above was pure snark – I liked the “Hips Don’t Lie” video from a few years back more.

  41. I don’t care much for her music (surprise), but she actually has put her money where her mouth is concerning charitable efforts. She’s given a ton of her own dough for the impoverished citizens from her native country, and has also organized relief efforts as well. So yeah, she may be somewhat ignorant of the world at large, but she’s a hell of a lot more evolved than the vast majority of her breathren in the music industry.

    Dmac (5ddc52)

  42. Good on her. Plus, Shakira is uber-hot, so there’s that 😉

Nice, first, Scott go fuck yourself. You insulted me first so spare me the fake upset which is likely to swell up.

Second, and given how smart you may think you are if you can not understand the difference between calling someone infantile and saying they have infantile view of the how the world works — then shame on you b/c you are another intellectual mediocre on this board.

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  44. #28, John, read #43.

Being infantile and having infantile views of the how the world works are not one in the same.

And yes, Liberals, do have an infantile view of how the world works.

My father was avowed socialist and revolutionary, and my father would describe his belief in Socialism and Communism to have been “almost child like” because it was about wanting what others had, ascribing their having it to injustice and then using force to take it.

Sounds infantile to me to have these principles as an ethos for structuring and organizing Government and Society.

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  45. Dana,

I was socially more liberal than before but it is pretty clear, over time, that socially liberal brings tremendous misery to most and certainly as one gets older.

With that said, I ascribe to personal freedom as an organizing ethos for society so long as it does not create burdens on others.

I simply don’t think many “social liberals” are that at all but simply “open minded” to their pet causes while not to everything else.

    FWIW, have a nice day.

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  46. You insulted me first so spare me the fake upset which is likely to swell up

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!! Mommy he hit me first!!!!

You were speaking of infantile views, I believe? Would you care to go on?

You called someone who, in addition to doing charity work and giving a good deal to charities that help her home country, took a class so she could be reminded that she is not the most important person in the world. She worked hard to hide who she was, and never acted like she was celebrity or deserving of special treatment.

If that is acting like a “twit”, you great fucking moron, I wish there were more twits in the world.

    Scott Jacobs (766b04)

  47. If anyone in this thread, including the topic of this thread, is being infantile, it’s HeavenSent. And the proof of that is all over the thread.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  48. #46, As I said. The faux outrage ….. Maybe you should try hearing her, and her views, in Spanish too.

But notice the goal posts moving …. from you labeling what I wrote as her being infant or infantile (which was not said) to having infantile views of the world (which I said).

POTUS ain’t no infant (nor does he act it) but he certainly has an infantile view point of the world and how it works.

Would you like to replace “infantile view point” with “simplistic and naive?” You can then go on watching her videos in peace.

#47, Look above for your answer.

    HeavenSent (01a566)

  49. “and never acted like she was celebrity or deserving of special treatment.”

The Roman Polanski argument …. ascribing qualities/actions to a person which you have no idea of in order to make one’s argument stronger. “He never did it again …. I know b/c ….”

What do you know of dear Shakira pray tell to cause such wonder over my call her a Twit with an Infantile POV on issues of Government and Society?

Are there really people who think Pinochet is good?

Meanwhile, that “twit” speaks four languages and was writing music at an age when Heavensent didn’t even know he would later love right wing military dictators. She reportedly has an IQ of 140, but, hell, USA Weeked, is no real source.

I suspect many lack any real knowledge of this young lady and seem to be spouting off based on her Wiki profile and LA Times puff pieces.

Yet to hear you guys talk — Pinochet/Franco/Trujillo were worse. No sense of proportion and certainly no concern for the human they killed.

As Stalin right pointed out as he manipulated the New York Times and his Commie frems — one death a tragedy, millions a statistic.
