Patterico's Pontifications

Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize. No, Really. For Real, He Did. Yes, I Pinky-Swear.

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 6:40 am

It seems like I’m kidding, doesn’t it? But I’m not. Even his sycophants in Big Media are taken aback by the decision:

President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in a stunning decision designed to encourage his initiatives to reduce nuclear arms, ease tensions with the Muslim world and stress diplomacy and cooperation rather than unilateralism.

The Nobel Peace Prize is now officially a joke.

Wait, this just in: it already was.

I give this decision an A-.

P.S. Lech Walesa is less than impressed. He is quoted in the linked article as saying: “So soon? Too early. He has no contribution so far.”

Yasser Arafat could not be reached for comment, but presumably would complain that Obama hasn’t killed enough people yet to qualify.

P.P.S. What is it, two months before we get to go through this again? You know, when TIME inevitably makes Obama “Man of the Year”?

  1. Nominations had to be in by Feb 1st, which means Obama earned the prize in all of two weeks. Someone that good should have solved Iran, Palistine, and Afanganistan by 9 months.

  2. Obama should be embarrassed. If he has any sense of decency, he will decline the award.

  5. I think President Obama got the award, at the end of the day, for not being President Bush.

That said, I think it’s silly; it would have seemed far more appropriate to wait a few years and pass judgement on what had been accomplished, first.

    .

I’m sure that’s what Alfred Nobel had in mind when he first conceived and funded the award. Yup, let’s give the award to encourage him to achieve the political goals they hold so dear rather than for actual accomplishments.

Between this and the whole “we can negotiate a place for the Taliban in Afghanistan” it feels like Teh Stoopid meter is pegged and smoking.

  11. It was a joke when Carter got it a couple of years ago.

Au Contraire – when Arafat won it, they lost all semblence of respectability. I wasn’t surprised at all at this – but I am surprised that his bootlickers in teh MSM actually have expressed some skepticism about the award.

I now ask our military to bomb Sweden into the stone age – for the good of humanity.

  13. Well, here is where i offer a defense that isn’t very good, but its something…

You know, you have to think at least some of this is for being our first black president. And you could argue that this is a sign of the relative peace and justice that now exists on racial issues here. But even then Obama wouldn’t have caused that to any appreciable extent, his election merely reflected that reality.

so there is my limited defense, such as it is.

But even liberals are saying this is not very well deserved. i think Lech Walesa has the best take, as in “maybe in a few years, who knows? but for now, no.” i mean even when we have disagreed with the nobels in the past, we usually saw the logic to it. carter did negotiate peace with egypt and isreal. and arafat was given it at a time when he was making himself out to be a peacemaker. i mean arafathead was full of it, and it was a mistake, but i won’t rag on them for it.

But obama? only the hardened left will think he deserves it. i was telling a coworker and she literally wouldn’t believe me until i showed her the cnn email.

And I suggest you folks in this little room feed your churning bellies with a full read of the Nobel news release on Obama’s award. They make it quite clear that the rest of the world — that area outside the Fox News-only sphere — believes the U.S. just might be moving away from the destructiveness of Dick Cheney, the martinet behind the WBush marionette.

He risked assasination, bombings, etc. He once had a lunatic plunge a letter opener into his chest so close to his heart that if he had sneezed, he would have died.

And ultimately he did die for what he believed in.

And every day in the world dissidents are jailed and beaten in china, reporters are imprisoned in North Korean, and hundreds of people protest largely peacefully for freedom in iran.

These are the kinds of men who deserve the award.

It sullies the Nobel peace prize to a mere politician, who risked little and accomplished nothing of value. i mean hell, all he did is make speeches and i would challenge anyone to remember a single line from any of them. i mean maybe if he gave a speech as memorable as “I have a dream” i would give the nobels a mulligan, but no, no, this is not deserved.

Resolving the Iraq/Afghanistan wars. Bringing the economy back on its feet. Making progress on climate change. Restoring America’s leadership role on major world issues. Etc. This might happen somewhere down the line. Two or three years later. Then this award will make sense. Now, it’s like a joke. Sniff sniff. I smell racism…. 8)

    “Things fall apart; the center cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity…

The difference is that I don’t come out hurling insults at people who I disagree with. If I resort to insult, it is in response to those who insult me. Unless you are against me defending myself. If you really study my history here you will find that I come under fire for pointing out differences in view points that go against the general flow of conversation. I am the other side view. I keep the discussion honest and valid. If I was such a problem as you always try to paint me, Patterico or DRJ would have banned me or at least put me on moderation. They haven’t. Why? because they understand what I represent. I also have the reputation of apologizing when I know I should.

Al Gore won it for saying unkind things about the younger President Bush and talking about global warming, while flying around in a private jet and having a house which used more electricity than a small neighborhood. Jimmy Carter won it for saying unkind things about the younger President Bush and telling everybody how mistreated the Palestinians are. Kofi Annan won it for doing absolutely nothing. Yassir Arafat won it for agreeing to stop planting bombs — which he did not — and for accepting, gratis, the generosity of Israel. Mikhail Gorbachev won it for losing the Cold War; the men who won the Cold War got nothing.

Given whatever standards the Nobel Committee has used in the past, Barack Obama is the obvious choice!

  130. “…and taking reasonable steps in the opposite direction, like multilateral approaches to…anything at all, really…”

Yes, Bush was notorious for his unilateral approach to international events…such as going to the UN to seek its’ imprimateur to deal with Iraq which had violated countless UN Security Council Resolutions; and then there was his acquiesence to the EU powers in attempting to convince Iran that they needed to abandon their nuclear power/weapons program; plus, his cowboy insistence that North Korea must talk to all of its’ neighbors together and not one-on-one with the USA to deal with the nuclear threat that they were becoming to the area, and the proliferation problem that they were presenting to the world.
Yes, his cowboy-diplomacy was such an embarrassment to the world, and Obama has accomplished so much more in combatting world-terrorism, the subjugation of women and children within Islamic societies, and the proliferation of nuclear weapons. –“I don’t see this at all. Let’s be clear – this is the Nobel Prize For Not Being Bush. It is the big “welcome back” from the international community, which has more or less written the USA off over the last eight years. Throwing it back in their faces can’t be done respectfully because it’s clearly not a prize for Obama’s achievements, any more than Krugman’s was for new trade theory; it’s a prize for America, for not being Nixonland any more.

And the political capital will create itself. The wingnuts are going to go apeshit about this. And they’re going to do so in the nastiest way possible and damage themselves badly. Specifically, I predict that they’re going to do enough “affirmative action” jokes to irritate the black vote into showing up for a midterm in the same numbers they did for the Presidential. The jujitsu approach of acting graciously and allowing his enemies to demonstrate what kind of people they are is Obama’s chief political strategy.”

here’s a clue. a black man can have an outsized ego. indeed, skin color does not grant a person immmunity from any moral or psychological failings, or exempt them from criticism based on them. to say otherwise is bluntly racist.

the fact is he didn’t deserve this. this may have been affirmative action or at least joy at the mere fact that he is america’s first black president. certainly when a person is treated in a way they don’t deserve you have to wonder what is really behind it.

Gotcha. so if obama says that the sun rises in the west and sets in the east and revolves around his massive ears, and if hamas says “that’s silly” and the taliban says, “that’s retarded” and if I happen to agree, i have thrown my lot in with the terrorists. Great logic, there.

notice you can’t even pretend he has done anything to deserve it. indeed, since the deadline for nominations was Feb 1, then everything he has done since them doesn’t apply. which means even most of his pretty words don’t apply.

And you know what? no one–not the nobel committee, not anyone–gets to substitute my judgment for their own. I don’t judge a person based on whether they won that stupid award. I judge the award based on who won it. Who are these people? Who died and made them the conscience of the world? The fact that Alfred Nobel died, btw, didn’t make them the rightful judge of anything. My ancestors didn’t throw off the rule of the pope in rome, and the king of england, just to substitute them from a bunch of Norwegians. To argue from authority, which is what you are doing, has been recognized as a fallacy for well over two millenia.

why are the followers of Obama so quick to turn off their own logic and rely on faith. Faith in the nobel committee, and of course, Faith in Obama.

By the way, if we are going to count how many times the left and right have agreed with terrorists, well let’s do it then, and not on the little issues but the big issues. Hamas and the Taliban didn’t want us to fight in Afghanistan and Iraq, either. But leftards have no problem agreeing with them on that. And when Obama says he wants to meet with the head of iran, the Taliban and Hamas applauds that. Its funny after agreeing with terrorists for so long suddenly the left finds any coincidental agreement problematic. Indeed, as the smoke rose from the WTC, it wasn’t the right asking “why do they hate us” and concluding that they had just reasons for doing so.

    A.W. (e7d72e)

  157. I want to eschew all humility and say it is with great pride that I accept this Nobel Peace prize given to Americans who voted for Obama.

This is actually the most shrewd comment that Larry Reilly has ever made here. This prize wasn’t about Obama, it was about all the starry-eyed lefties who struggle with their deeply-submerged racism and classism and wanted to reward themselves by giving Obama this honor. As Larry points out, they should have just given it to the 50,000,000+ who voted for him, since that is who they are really targeting.

The only possible way Dear Leader can avoid looking like a complete ass is to show up to accept the prize and deliver a robust speech defending America and vigorously blasting the cheap and easy anti-American sentiment that passes for intellectualism in most of Europe.

But of course to the peacenicks, that is never peace. no war is ever necessary or wise, nothing is worth fighting for. so what i said above was arguing based on their standards.

There is one useful aspect to this. It allows us to tell intellectually honest libs from those whose opinions aren’t worth the time to read them, such as Larry and VietnamEraVet.

As far as the international opinion of our President and of the United States, let us consider the following:
    – The french prime minister thinks our president is naive and too arrogant to admit it.
    – The British aren’t too far behind and don’t listen to our requests (having released the Lockerbee bomber).
    – The Poles know we have double-crossed them.
    – The Czech Republic knows we have double crossed them.
    – The Chinese are angry over our economic policy, at least when they are not laughing at our Sec. of Treasury.
    – The Russians again have as much respect for us as they did after Kruschev had JFK for lunch. The only difference, at least JFK was grounded in reality and knew it.
    – We are not understood by those who seek freedom in Iran and Honduras.
    – Our biggest backers are dictatorships like Cuba and Venezuela.

The only people who think Obama deserved the Nobel are those who prefer style over substance, who mistake magical thinking with rational argument.

As said, it should be obvious to anyone except the most blinded Obama-cult member that President Obama didn’t even have the time or opportunity to do something worthy of a Nobel at the time of the decision. Those with any intellectual integrity and honesty will admit so.

By all means go with your bilious overflow on the Nobel thing, but don’t let it consume you. At least once an hour entertain happy, fulfilling thoughts. For example, you might try reminding yourself that the U.S. lost its bid to host the Olympics.
It doesn’t matter that you’ve been replaying that mind-tape a lot already before this morning’s bombshell. Try to tease some more shelf-life out of the warm, happy, validating feeling you had when you very first heard that the U.S. lost, which means that Obama lost. Yay!

Damn: those are some very strong words! The GOP won 48 % of the vote, right? They are a huge part of this country. The worst thing the democrats can say about the Taliban is that they are like Republicans?

It’s all about power. The nobel prize is the “kick bush” prize, the counsel are committed to democrat corruption, and this entire prize is meant to be a bitter weapon to further divide our people so that America is weaker. While very few people think this award was qualified, this infighting further harms our ability and will to defend ourselves and promote peace against tyrants. Old Europe loves profitable tyrants, and hates the efforts to free millions of humans from them.

A.W. Why don’t you read the link provided on this thread. You will find out the reason they decided to give him this award. One of which would be this: “He got the prize because he has been able to change the international climate,” Nobel Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said.
He may not have done anything towards world peace. But I think “changing the international climate” is a good way to go in that direction. Don’t you think so?

The Emperor who now deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. (1b037c)

  177. Obama has, again and again, denied that even his most crazy detractors have racist sympathies.

He’s also denied his most crazy supporters have racist sympathies…opposite directions, of course. Racists to the left of me, racists to the right, stuck in de Nile with you.

    political agnostic (4ec1a1)

  178. Tom, you are lying when you say Obama has denied his detractors are racist.

The opposite is the case. Obama has noted that some of the criticism against him is racist, and refused to condemn such disgusting and nationally harmful tactics.

You, like the Nobel committee, are lying about what Obama has done. You are inventing accomplishments. You wouldn’t have to do that if you were talking about someone who actually had accomplishments.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  179. Well, if they mean by changing the international climate that our enemies are emboldened, and our allies don’t even support us anymore, then I guess he did change the international climate. I can’t say I think that’s a good think, much less worthy of a prize like this. Next thing you know, they’ll be handing out Nobel Peace prizes in boxes of Cracker Jack.

    Rochf (ae9c58)

  180. Dustin…..love your little riff about Obama being so bad for world peace. Geez. That fast? I take that to mean you believe he can have that much a significant negative impact in that short a period of time but not a positive one.
But between the lines of your logic I see the Party slogans pondered by Winston Smith:

    WAR IS PEACE
    FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
    IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

And by that logic, I’m sure you think the great forces for world peace in recent years were Cheney, Bush, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz. The greater part of the rest of the world thinks otehrwise, witness today’s Nobel Peace prize.
Now you guys form a circle, hold hands and think happy thoughts.

As for JD: Let me get this straight. The United States was not in the running to host the Olympics? Are you, like dmac, geographically challenged?
    Tee hee hee hee.

    Larry Reilly (45c8f2)

  181. America did not lose the Olympics. Chicago and Barcky did. That you conflate Barcky with the country is not surprising. But, continue to beclown yourself. It is always good for a laugh.

JD, that is one of the most stupid comments you have ever made. Is Chicago different from America? If he had gotten the bid, would it have been purely a Chicago thing or an American victory? You keep out doing yourself in stupidity. What’s happening to you? You used to be very smart and interesting.

The Emperor who now deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. (1b037c)

  182. Has the Cy Young committee voted yet? I think that The Won’s pitch from the mound at the White Sox game makes him worthy of the Cy Young award.
And the Heisman and Naismith committees will have to look favorably on him as well.

    Mike Myers (710e8b)

  183. Larry, of course Obama can have a more negative impact more quickly than he can build peace.

That’s not obvious to you? It’s much easier to destroy than to build. Just ask the people fighting for freedom in Iran and Honduras. Just ask the Dalai Lama, who has shockingly been dis-invited by the white house in order to appease the armies that crushed his people.

You, like the democrat party, are committed to demonizing and fighting your war for more power. You are not interested even slightly in peace. You want to use this prize to wage a bitter and angry fight against people who actually made peace.

What has Obama accomplished? He’s announced stuff, but you have refused throughout the thread to say what Obama has accomplished.

What’s the merit of a prize that has the stated intention of “Kicking Bush”? And went to someone who you admit has accomplished nothing?

    The merit is negative, actually.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  184. Take it from people who live in Illinois–Chicago can be very different than America–more like it’s own little banana republic.

    Rochf (ae9c58)

  185. Larry at 180 – The Nobel commitee speaks for itself, not the world. The Nobel “Peace Prize” commitee has proven for years that it is beyond parody. (see Gore, Carter, Arafat)

The world speaks in other ways. See the election and re-election of leaders all over Europe who supported Bush.

    Have Blue (854a6e)

  186. Barcky’s folks told use yesterday that the Taliban is not our enemy. The State Dept and DNC say otherwise. Which is it?

    JD (8e5805)

  187. Yeah, Emperor, Chicago is different from America. It is an enclave of violence and murder. It isn’t a democracy, since the elections are shams. It isn’t a place of justice, since criminals rule.

It is a great thing indeed that the tyrants there did not get billions of dollars in real estate gains, off the back of the people.

America did not lose the olympics. This is just on example of how Obama is unable to get any diplomatic result. He might get praise from those who want a obedient and weak America… who want to get things from us. But he has never and will never get anything back in return. Obama has failed to act in America’s interests.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  188. At last, he’ll be able to pay Ayers the royalties
    he owes him….

    Dorothy Adams (e90721)

  189. Larry Reilly says “The greater part of the rest of the world thinks [Obama deserves the prize], witness today’s Nobel Peace prize.”

The greater part of the world is shocked and angered that Obama got this prize. Those polls that have been conducted universally prove that the peoples of the world think Obama is unqualified.

It’s the aristocracy that thinks Obama deserves the prize, but what they really think is that this will make a political statement. They’ve already admitted that this prize is not for anything Obama has done. It’s about “kicking Bush”, and praising celebrity.

No, Larry, the people of the world are no different from you or I. None of us can recall anything Obama has accomplished. Speeches and prizes and ghostwriten screeds are not accomplishments. Millions of people are living in fear of tyrants, and Obama is helping the tyrants. You think this is some cute game, but Iranians are being murdered and tortures, with Obama’s help. Chavez is staging a coup of Honduras, with Obama’s help. China is crushing dissent in Tibet and elsewhere, with Obama’s help.

This is a serious problem that adults are worried about, while partisan idiots gloat about the prizes awarded in gilded halls. I don’t appreciate your hatred of my kind, but I can live with it. What I cannot abide is letting the world crumble while the ruling glass toasts eachother.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  190. Tom

    > criticism of Obama that assumes with little evidence that he’s unqualified for [fill-in-the-blank]

Assumes? Here’s the facts. The nominations were due on February 1. So he was judged for 1) his campaign and 2) 10 days of being president. Is there something about that I don’t know about? Some secret wonderful peaceful thing he did that most of us don’t know about?

No. So he doesn’t deserve it. And all the facts are in fact known on the subject, so no one is assuming jack squat. No, jack squat is what he is getting done (which is not an entirely bad thing).

    > uppity, is criticism that draws on a legacy of racist language and assumptions that is specifically situated in the history of American racism.

Well, you used that actual word. And if you take the concept of egotistical, etc. and say it means “uppity” then you are saying exactly what I said: that black people are immune from being criticized for egotism.

Sorry, but any time a part-term United States Senator thinks he is ready to be president, he is not exactly lacking for self confidence. And the incompetence I have witnessed over the last 9 or so months have not exactly proven that he had enough talent at the job to justify that self-confidence.

    The emporer

    > He may not have done anything towards world peace. But I think “changing the international climate” is a good way to go in that direction. Don’t you think so?

Right. And the international community is going to do what? Iran will get a nuke and there is a very good chance that they will drop it on isreal. And the international community will do what? Write a strongly worded letter?

He made the Europeans like him. That and $1.25 will get you a coke at the soda machine.

No I don’t think he has made peace one bit more likely. And I think that if this peace prize encourages him to go even softer, the result with be conflagration.

I suppose you thought Neville Chamberlain was a great peacemaker, too.

  191. Good Allah, the obtuse is thick with these trolls. Mawy especially. But the Chimperor is giving Mawy a run for his money.

    JD (8e5805)

  192. JD, the trolls have a tremendous advantage.

They know this is a big deal, and that it gets under people’s skin. I am personally saddened by this kind of thing. I was expecting Hu to get the prize, as he sits in Chinese prison for fighting for freedom. I actually was expecting this award today, and when I realized that Obama got it, I was flabbergasted. Why not give it to him after a few years of him actually being on the job? At least that way the prize wouldn’t be completely marginalized as a partisan trick.

That’s really all this is. A shame, but I’m not sad that freedom fighters didn’t get some lousy award. I am ashamed that my country is the kind of country that gets prizes for not standing up to evil. I know this trick is going to work… any hope of my friends in Afghanistan being saved from Obama’s failures are lost. And hope of Iranians tasting freedom in the next four years is lost. Any hope of China making human rights progress is lost. Any hope of our nation humbly apologizing and helping Honduras is lost.

Trolls have some guttural instinct that this is great proxy for the aristocratic disease. These wealthy fat old men in their gilded thrones in Scandinavia will have lots of champagne as they laugh at those demonized republicans. Even today, the DNC is calling criticism of this prize akin to the rape and torture the Taliban has practiced… a sign of tolerance of evil and hatred of freedom.

We’re in for a bumpy ride, and while I have a lot to be thankful for, most trolls will be able to get a reaction out of me by snarking about this prize trick.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

But i said it before, if he actually refused it, i would really respect that. And he can say, “it is my full intention to deserve this before my presidency ends, but i don’t deserve it yet” and i would respect that too.

And, btw, if you haven’t missed this, this is largely criticism at the nobels, not obama. i don’t except him to have been a great president yet. i don’t think he will be, but i would be more than happy to be proven wrong.

    JD (b7fd45)

  210. Emperor, you are being kinda coy, and that’s OK, because ultimately, this award is just a political hack.

But there are two prizes. There’s the theoretical prize for bravely fighting for peace at great personal cost. That’s the prize Obama didn’t earn. Then there’s the ‘kick Bush and please the aristocracy with your celebrity’ prize that Obama obviously did earn.

We’re talking about the difference between the lofty goals of mankind, which the nobel prize does not represent but ought to, and the sickening attempt to demogogue, which is what this prize represents.

The DNC’s first announcement once this prize was announced was to compare Republicans protesting the prize to the Taliban’s rape and murder and atrocitious tyranny. That’s your nobel prize. Bitterness and anger.

The hopeless naivete of the Pact was proven soon enough. The Nobel committee seldom recognizes that just wars sometimes are a necessary precursor of a lasting peace.

Strong with the projection, this one is.

  250. Affirmative action by the Nobel Peace prize committee.
    Ham fisted even.
It’s hard to be proud of an award that was given with such patronizing and condescending language.
As an American, President Obama should have told the Norweigians to STFU, go have another vodka and stop trying to influence our nations politics with their award.

  253. Let’s review President Obama’s foreign policy accomplishments before and after his selection for the prize 10 days after his inauguration, shall we?

Prior to his taking the oath of office he accomplished the following:

    1. Was treated like a rock star by a segment of the German public; which was nice after he had offended the German Government by trying to pull a PR stunt at the Brandenburg gate that was intended to overshadow JFK and Reagan’s actual accomplishments on behalf of Germany.

    2. Promised to heal the sick of the world and force the oceans to maintain proper boundaries. Unfortunately, the oceans have not been too cooperative. And it turns out any increased healing is dependent upon acts of Congress and the insistence of Sec. of HHS that everyone get the flu vaccine.

    3. Demanded that Putin and the Georgians stop scrapping and play nice with each other.

    4. Threatened to disregard and compromise the sovereignty of one of our allies, Pakistan.

    5. Promised to get us out of Iraq, quickly, as it was a war we shouldn’t have entered and couldn’t win. The surge was doomed to failure. It only looked like it worked because the world was already responding to the prospect of the one taking office.

    6. Promised we would win the “necessary” war, the one in Afghanistan.

    7. Promised to close Gitmo ASAP/ within a year/ sometime in the future.

Since that day of the Nobel Committees selection:

    8. Failed to close Gitmo.

    9. We are still in Iraq.

    10. Apparently it is not so clear that the war in Afghanistan is necessary, or that we need to win it.

    11. Insulted the British government with gift giving and trying to return meaningful gifts to previous administrations.

    12. Has won the disrespect of the French, who accuse him of being too naive to know what he is doing and too arrogant to admit it and learn something.

    13. Turned his back on repression and election fraud in Iran.

    14. Supported a leader who was lawfully removed from office according to his country’s Constitution.

    15. Put the importance of his own moment of prestige before the UN above dealing with the reality of Iran’s ongoing violation of UN demands.

Now what was it again that he did to deserve the Nobel within his first 10 days in office?

    MD in Philly (d4f9fa)

  254. This announcement was a beautiful thing because it generated bipartisan shock, amazement and surprise. There was a genuine feeling on both the left and the right, although not uniform, that Obama has not done anything yet do deserve the Prize. The fantastic thing about that is that is it shines a bright light on his lack of qualifications for the Presidency and his lack of achievements so far, something the media has been unwilling to cover. For that, we can thank the Nobel Prize Committee. SNL was prescient and a week early.

Has CNN fact checked the award yet?

    daleyrocks (718861)

  255. you mock him cause of how Taliban you are but this is just his first one.. next time he’ll be even MORE better qualified so in you face wingnuts

    happyfeet (6b707a)

  256. feets – Do they give a Nobel out for toned arms? Michelle deserves something too, doncha think?

    daleyrocks (718861)

  257. daleyrocks, you’re right… it’s going to put tons of pressure on Americans to analyze what Obama has accomplished.

What’s interesting is that this prize was transparently designed to create tremendous political turmoil in the USA. They’ve been doing that for many years… trying to hurt their boogeyman, the GOP and Bush. A peace prize as a tool for political bigotry and fighting? Yet another example of socialism failing.

    Dustin (bb61e3)

  258. He does have to pay taxes on this win, doesn’t he?

    PatAZ (9d1bb3)

  259. PatAZ,

I was just reading about the options the President has with regard to the money. Apparently it can be a bit complicated. This, according to Richard Painter, a White House ethics counsel under President George W. Bush,

“Turning the gift over to charity is something we usually would advise against in the Bush Administration,” he said. “For anybody, including the President and Vice President, it creates tax problems. The gift is still income and then the employee takes a tax deduction for the charitable contribution. There are limits to charitable deductions that are allowed. The President could end up owing some tax.”

    Dana (863a65)

  260. Talk about the ultimate in grade inflation.

The foolish folks in Sweden likely are similar to touchy-feely educators in various public and private schools throughout America. The ones who’ve been gravitating towards the notion that when it comes to, for example, competitive sports at school, no team and no member of a team should ever be looked upon as a loser. So in a game of baseball, football, basketball, etc, the scoreboard must not instill low self-esteem, and therefore keeping track of who’s winning or losing should be de-emphasized. Consequently, even the losing team is judged as deserving accolades and a trophy.

With the story of Obama and the Nobel Prize the epitome of dumbed-down grading and dumbed-down standards, the Nobel now has about as much credibility as — or actually less credibility than — say, the Miss Universe pageant, and certainly less gravitas than the “American Idol” or “Dancing With The Stars” show.

It must be a real bitch being a wingnut these days. They’re going to pass health care with a public option, and Obama is getting the Nobel Peace Prize. Ha ha ha ha!!

Not really. We go to work, enjoy our families. No real problems except the mortgage on our kids’ futures.

How’s it going for you? Not so good, I suspect.

I can’t speak for others, but I post here because, heck, I enjoy it. It’s fun. It helps to exercise the mind. I get to respond to people whose most intelligent post ends in “Ha ha ha ha!!”

    So, thanks. Keep posting.

I just voted for Obama to win the Heisman. Anyone who fails to follow your link and do likewise is a racist.

    Stu707 (0981d5)

  263. FYI: a leftie friend of mine insisted right-wingers were the only ones questioning whether Obama had accomplished enough to deserve the award, so I posted a bunch of links to center/left sources proving otherwise.
