Obama: Iran Presents “Added Urgency”

President Obama says Iran’s “pattern of evasion” brings added urgency to upcoming international talks:

“Obama warned Iran on Friday it would face “sanctions that bite” if it did not come clean.

“This is a serious challenge to the global non-proliferation regime and continues a disturbing pattern of Iranian evasion,” he said in his weekly radio and Internet address on Saturday.

“That is why international negotiations with Iran scheduled for October 1 now take on added urgency,” he said.”

Never let a serious crisis go to waste?

  1. We must pass healthcare reform or Iran will destabilize the Middle East!

    You’ve got to be kidding.

  3. It wasn’t long ago that Democrats were claiming that any concern over Iran was Bush admin warmongering.

Its a shame there are no adults in the administration.

  5. Maybe Obama will offer to attack Israel for them so they can continue to develop peaceful nuclear resources.

  6. Let me perfectly clear. Iran is tiny country. They don’t pose a serious threat to us. Some say I am mishandling this situation. If Iran does become a problem, clearly the issue was more dire than we anticipated. Please be assured it is a result of mishandling by the previous administration.

  7. I’m curious what makes this of “added urgency” now when the reports say it’s something the US has known about since 2007 and Obama has known about since he was inaugurated — and probably since was named the Democratic nominee over a year ago.

  8. A week ago, Obama knew all about Iran’s “pattern of evasion” & his prescription was “talk talk” …

the only thing that’s happened is the “pattern of evasion” Obama was happy to bury a week ago became public because the Iranians made it public.

I wonder if he realizes how weak the Iranians think he is.

  9. As I have consistently said, the United States will not interfere in the domestic affairs of other countries, but Iran must decide whether to join the world community of respectable nations by allowing free and open inspection of its self-proclaimed peaceful nuclear program or face the consequences.

Note that when I am speaking about non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, I am specifically excluding the international pariahs of Israel and Honduras. The United Kingdom is also close to making my list ’cause they’re a bunch of pansy-assed whiners.

These are the facts and they are not in dispute.

  10. If Obama can just find the right words, Ahmadinejad will begin to discuss starting serious negotiations by the end of next year.

  11. Iran better watch it. The UN is sending in the IKEA inspectors.

  12. I found this NYT record of Obama’s comments regarding Iran while on the campaign trail. Makes for an interesting read. Of course, continually feeling compelled to question our president’s motives regarding his decisions and focus, this makes me wonder if this latest *urgency* is just another way to distract us from the disastrous health care situation.

“I would meet directly with Iranian leaders. I would meet directly with Syrian leaders. We would engage in a level of aggressive personal diplomacy in which a whole host of issues are on the table. … Iran and Syria would start changing their behavior if they started seeing that they had some incentives to do so, but right now the only incentive that exists is our president suggesting that if you do what we tell you, we may not blow you up. …

…maybe he just got tired of waiting for their behavior to change. Heh.

  13. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually agree with what Jamie Rubin said on MSDNC Friday morning. Mika and Andrea and whichever Wash Post liberal was awake blathered on about how this proves Iran has been fibbing all along and now they will have to pay a price.

Rubin basically said they’ve lied before and were threatened with sanctions but Russia and China wouldn’t go along and the same thing will happen now. The only way to stop Iran from getting a nuclear bomb (which Clinton and Obama both said was unacceptable) is militarily and Obama is not going to do that. And Iran knows it.

The U.N. is a toothless lion that can only say please please please! Obama fits right in.

  14. This makes me sick. Obama knew about this a year ago, and is now acting suprised. Give me a f-ing break. What’s he going to do now? Like sanctions have worked well so far. Obama talks tough, and Iran basically says shut up. We are in for a bumpy and nuclear ride.

  15. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say this.

The President said something profound today. And, I’ll also say that I’m taking it out of context, but I really believe the exact quote will sink him in the next election if the GOP plays its hand right:

    “I’m not interested in victory.”

That pretty much sums up his entire, short presidency.

The reason I say this is because most Americans do believe in winning. They do believe in victory. They believe it in their hearts, their souls and their minds. They believe it because that is what sets them apart from the rest of the world.

We’re not perfect, not by a long shot.

But what we do know is that when we win, it doesn’t just benefit us, it benefits others. When we win — our system, our beliefs — benefit others, not just Americans. That victory benefits everyone who wants to live a just, peaceful, life.

And, when I say “we win,” I don’t specifically mean the U.S. Government.

I mean the American people, all of us: I mean the “teabaggers,” and the “anarchists,” the “liberals” and the “conservatives.” I mean the “elite” and the “oppressed.” I mean the “capitalist” and the “socialists,”
    the “left” and the “right.”

I even mean “Democrats” and “Republicans.”

I mean everyone who lives in this country legally and illegally.

Each and everyone one of those groups — and every individual — benefit from a Constitution that no other country in the world possesses.

That’s why I believe in victory.

But, the President has time to recover.

  16. Ag80, to our postmodern President there is no such thing as “winning.” Only polls. And mollifying the grievance lobby who got you elected. And feathering your own nest and those of your allies. And being well thought of by all the right editorial boards and in all the best faculty dining rooms. And having the arts community think you are cool and hip. If Tel Aviv or even Los Angeles inadvertently ends up nuked, well, we judge folks like Obama by their intentions, never by their results.

  17. I just saw that at GatewayPundit, Ag80, and posted on it here.
