College Football, Week 3

Filed under: Sports — DRJ @ 7:01 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

I’m too busy watching college football to blog about it so this will have to be an open thread.

Here’s the Yahoo College Scoreboard. As we say in West Texas: Read ’em and Weep, especially all you USC and Tennessee fans. As for everyone else, no gloating. Odds are you’ll get your come-uppance before the season is out.

  1. I’ve driven through Texas on numerous occasions and I have to say it’s a bit strange that West, Texas is in eastern Texas.

  2. And East Texas is a hamlet in Pennsylvania.

  3. Interesting what kind of asshats Obama picked for his advisors.

And remember, we have three more years of these guys.

  4. KSU only down 10… Please god, Go Cats!!

  5. I like old-school fiddle strings. They’re the best.

  6. SC is not up tp their reputation this year. Corp is an ineffective passer although the defense is as good as usual. They have to realize they will make the season for any team that beats them. Every game is the high point of the season for the other team. If they can handle that, they will be OK. Corp looked like a deer in the headlights most of the game today.

  7. Arrrr. The Texas Tech Red Raiders done walked the plank on Talk Like a Pirate Day, mateys.

    Arrrr.

And Eastland is kinda in West Texas and Paris is in the eastern part of North Texas, while Italy is south of Dallas. And Moscow is in East Texas.

Of course Fredericksburg, along with LaGrange, are in Central Texas.

And Mexia is west of Colmesneil by a long shot and I’ll just about bet that no one knows how to pronounce either.

Bug Tussle, of course, doesn’t exist on a map. But, Dime Box, New Dime Box, Gun Barrel City, Nigton and White Settlement certainly do. In the latter two cases, unfortunately.

I can come up with more, especially when it comes to what small towns in Texas call their sports teams.

  9. Best West Texas sports movie: The Rookie or Friday Night Lights?

  10. With Utah and BYU down this weekend, this BSU fan is pretty happy. That other TD up there won’t shut up about his Huskies, so don’t try. πŸ˜€

    Teflon Don (f313c4)

  11. There are some TCU fans who are happy about those games, too, Teflon Don.

    DRJ (a51a0e)

  12. I didn’t watch either movie.

  13. The Rookie or Friday Night Lights?

I vote Friday Night Lights… but it was close.

    Stashiu3 (8cadeb)

  14. It is close. I liked The Rookie because it had a more positive message and the characters are like so many people I know.

  16. I prefer “We Are Marshall” or “Remember The Titans” … but maybe because I actually watched those. (not that they have anything to do with the nation of TX)

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  17. I’ve been a USC fan all my life, and this season is worrying me. I hope this season can be a warm-up for next: with the offense learning, Barkley growing, and the defense strengthening. Unfortunately, I’ve felt that for several seasons. The hype is always big for USC, but they always lose to the little teams. And there seems to be an Ohio curse. We win vs. Ohio State, then lose the next game. At least we lost early in the season and hopefully can use this to get through the rest of the season unscathed. Hopefully…

I now see why Carroll chose Barkley, as he leads the team well. Corp did indeed look like a true rookie. He had no clue what to do. His team looked scared as well. Carroll should’ve gone on fourth down in the last play. And for Christ’s sakes, who is making the play calling? I couldn’t stand Sarkisian and his completely predictable offense. Stop being so damn conservative, Petey. Bring back Barkley. Stop playing conservative offense. And stop losing to crappy teams, man.

You know, if anybody else gave me a straightline like that… I think I broke something holding back a smart-aleck remark. Maybe a rib. πŸ˜‰

    University of Michigan, 3-0!
Detroit Lions, about to lose their 19th consecutive regular season game later today.

    Stashiu3 (8cadeb)

  20. Lol, DRJ. UCLA and Washington State are rebuilding just fine. Us? We’re just sucking…at least we have a good dental school.

  23. The SEC….once again….LSU, Kentucky, Ole Miss, all win (some easy, some not) and the rest of the league beats up on itself…

As opposed to the ACC, with their pitiful losses again by Virginia, Maryland, (aside from FlaSt, who seems to be better)…

Or the Big 12, with Baylor and that KSU team that Scott is crying about….although I like Bo Pelini and wish they had won….

Or the Big 10, with Minnesota, Purdue, both at home losing, and Northwestern on the road….

The SEC, with only one non-conference loss after three weeks….

    Best league in America….

    Oh, and Go LSU….

  24. @DRJ – I vote for “Necessary Roughness”

Too bad the Red Raiders lost, but at least they kept it relatively close.

    Mike LaRoche (e711ed)

  25. Friday Night Lights – movie and TV show. Hands down.

    JD (584916)

  26. YIKES…..USF Bulls lost Grothe their “franchise” QB to a badly twisted knee…Of course, they did still win over Charleston Southern 59-0.

    Duke DeLand (16bc3f)

  27. Audacity, I think if Barkley could throw, he would have played the second half. Remember what happened to the a couple of years ago when Carroll let Booty play with a broken finger. Corp was really ineffective. The rest did pretty well. Every time Corp threw a pass, my heart was in my mouth. Had he been effective, the run would have been there after the first quarter.

Washington has 5 former SC coaches now. They will get better, a lot better. I think SC will have their hands full with Cal and this could be the year they don’t go to the Rose Bowl.

    Mike K (2cf494)

  28. Yeah, well, the Pac-10 is a sissy conference anyway.

    Leviticus (30ac20)

  29. I long for the days of “The Big Two and Little Eight.” Bo and Woody beating each other up every year, deciding which team would go to the Rose Bowl.

I hate this new Bowl system, where the Rose Bowl is no longer Big Ten champ vs Pac Ten champ (and I remember the Pac Eight). The reason polls were started was to cause controversy. There is no need to try to resolve the controversy. Let’s keep the controversy, throw out the new Bowl system, and forget anyone ever mentioned a college-student playoff.

That’s what makes the top level college football schedule and programs good, the controversy. If we had 5 major polls and at the end of the season those 5 major polls declared 5 different schools number one, I couldn’t be happier. That’s the way it should be — old school.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  30. Comeuppance? My team is Stanford. We just hope to lose by fewer than 20 to Cal this year. THAT’ll show ’em!

    Mitch (69e416)

  31. Oh, and it’s the St Johns Redmen, libnuts.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  32. What do I like about Stanford? They are The Cardinal, not cardinals or something else. Their name is unique and I like that. Their sports, not so much.

    John Hitchcock (3fd153)

  33. Mr. Hitchcock,

I remember those days well. I prefer the rest of the league having good teams too.

When the other bowl games got together and left the Rose Bowl out of the running, you had an undefeated and great Penn St. team watching the votes for #1 go to a Nebraska team that they never had a chance to play. There was more controversy before when you could only argue which undefeated team was better. it was just foolish to think the current system would end the controversy.
