Census Bureau Severing ACORN Ties (Updated)

Filed under: Obama — DRJ @ 3:53 pm

Via Fox News:

“Over the last several months, through ongoing communication with our regional offices, it is clear that ACORN’s affiliation with the 2010 Census promotion has caused sufficient concern in the general public, has indeed become a distraction from our mission, and may even become a discouragement to public cooperation, negatively impacting 2010 Census efforts,” read a letter from Census Director Robert M. Groves to the president of ACORN.

“Unfortunately, we no longer have confidence that our national partnership agreement is being effectively managed through your many local offices. For the reasons stated, we therefore have decided to terminate the partnership,” the letter said.

Good news. I hope it’s a permanent parting of the ways.

UPDATE: Jake Tapper reports the BigGovernment undercover videos were the “tipping point” that led the Census Bureau to terminate its relationship with ACORN:

“Census Bureau spokesman Stephen Buckner said officials in the bureau, which is part of the Department of Commerce, had been concerned with news reports about ACORN for awhile and “had been monitoring them.”

Buckner said recent videotapes posted on BigGovernment.com and broadcast on Fox News — showing a young man and young woman pretending to be a pimp and prostitute, declaring themselves such and apparently able to secure the help of ACORN employees in Washington D.C. , and Baltimore, in obtaining housing – was “the tipping point.”

  1. Good. Now how much again did Acorn get from the Stimulus bill? Will that be “reviewed” too?

  2. Even a blind squirrel finds an “acorn” now and then.
It is evident that the public scrutiny afforded by the Baltimore and DC tapes generated more heat than even a bureaucrat can withstand; for a political appointee, it must have seemed like a blast-furnace.
There is hope for the Republic yet!

  3. The little president man is having an awful frustrating time mainstreaming his ACORN and his Van Jones and his dirty socialist health cares and this is with a pliant media that’s rowing right alongside with him. Something in our little country can’t abide just letting the little president man eat his waffle.

  4. Wow. This is big news. I have been very nervous about ACORNs involvement in the upcoming census. However, the ties are very strong to the administration so I cannot accept that this is happening because of a few videos and “bad individuals” in the news recently. With this announcement today I would not be surprised if a BIG story comes out soon that will undermine the entire ACORN organization.

  5. I’m quite surprised at this action, but also quite pleased. Now that the blogosphere has played a critical role in this investigation, will the MSM deign to even mention that reality?

  6. Acorn will have to be disbanded and a new organization (let’s just call it ANCOR) formed from the same personnel to do the same job.

  7. how much again did Acorn get from the Stimulus bill? Will that be “reviewed” too?

A very important consideration. Stimulus money is the foundation for the structure of permanent political support.

Expect the media to be unconcerned about the return of billions.

  10. I’d be of a mind to keep a weather eye, since in June ACORN changed its name to COI (Community Organizations International).

And no, this is not a joke.

  11. If this really is true, and if they stick with it, it’s a tremendous relief. The prospect of widespread partisan fraud in the census has had me deeply worried.

  12. Have you noticed how rarely these outrages are exposed by the mainstream media? They have far more resources and yet accomplish so little. It’s almost as if they see themselves as allies of Acorn. But surely that could not be true. /sarcasm

  13. Apparently, the Baltimore State Attorney is less concerned with ACORN’s potential illegalities and more with potential illegalities with the video on YouTube.

Baltimore, MD – September 11, 2009 – We have received inquiries from citizens and the media asking whether the Baltimore City State’s Attorneys Office would initiate a criminal investigation for acts allegedly committed at ACORN offices located in Baltimore. The only information received in reference to this alleged criminal behavior was a YouTube video. Upon review by this office, the video appears to be incomplete. In addition, the audio portion could possibly have been obtained in violation of Maryland Law, Annotated Code of Maryland Courts and Judicial Proceedings Article §10-402, which requires two party consent.

If it is determined that the audio portion now being heard on YouTube was illegally obtained, it is also illegal under Maryland Law to willfully use or willfully disclose the content of said audio. The penalty for the unlawful interception, disclosure or use of it is a felony punishable up to 5 years.

  15. The quote at #13 has been posted on the thread about “two more acorns fired” as well.

I hope whoever released that statement has a mother, sister, wife (husband?), or daughter to do something forceful yet just to get his/her attention before their soul becomes any less human than it already has.

I agree with ras and EW1(SG). ACORN seems to be a reincarnation of Weathermen Alinskyites who may simply morph into something else.

BTW, I heard mention of a video clip of President Obama at a blackboard teaching Alinsky material. Is that for real? Does anyone know where it can be found?

  17. President O’Dumbo was/is a member of ACORN and instructed the ACORN slime and was they’re lawyer, may still be on their payroll. ‘Tax free whore houses’ at least answers the large question. How did a man who never had a job end up in the white house with $12+ million in the bank? I love it when a communist plot falls apart. Impeach O’Dumbo now.

  19. This is a classic instance of kicking off the ladder which helped you to climb to the top. Acorn was quite helpful in garnering some extra votes for Obama in wining the election.

  22. It’s astounding how open the little Census spokesthug is about how their chief concern was that their ACORN pals were getting too much negative press to make the collaboration viable. Not once does this Buckner worm even hint that maybe the Census Bureau shouldn’t be working with amoral and criminal organizations.

I bet Mr. Soros is just giggling and smirking and then giggling some more after that as he watches our little country flounder in shit.

    happyfeet (6b707a)

  23. The New York Times published a masterfully edited of an AP story about APORN being dropped.

The full AP story downplayed the APORN prostitution stings, placing them in the penultimate graf, but the NYT did one better by eliminating the troublesome reference entirely.

  25. I hope this is true. Obama will be firing Robert
Groves within the month. Obama cannot allow someone in his administration to affect his favorite organization.

    krusher (836674)

  26. To place things in perspective; I worked for an $8B revenue firm. $8B buys you 40,000 FT employees, [nice] offices in most states, and a few HQ facilities of 20 story buildings and 1,000s of employees.

Acorn. While not quite $8B it is $6.5B. Look at the videos. The ‘facilities’ are clearly rented space in low rent stor fronts. A $10 bulletin board, used, temp furniture and antiquated computers.

Even the staff are 2-3; some of them even part time, per news reports.

$6.5B. Where’s the money? ACORN IS A MONEY LAUNDERING CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE . It’s a shell game; SOMEONE[S] else is getting these tax dollars.

    Swanks (8d6698)

  27. Now heads will roll – at the Census Bureau. ACORN won’t even have to sue. Pressure will be applied from the White House, Robert M. Groves will decide to spend more time with his family, and his bootlicking replacement will reconsider this rash decision and reinstate ACORN with profuse apologies.

  28. I has been clear for a very long time that the leftists/progressives/liberals in this country have known for an equally long time that they can’t get anything done except through obfuscation, outright lies and backdoor dealing. While they are currently waving that right hand around (dropping ACORN from census), you’d better be damned sure you keep an eye on the left hand. That’s where the mischief lies. Sometimes you can do much more through control of the executive agencies that through the legislature.

    Dennis (5daf9d)

  29. #27,28; MTGlass & Dennis: I am sure that it is only coincidental that (as I mentioned above) ACORN has changed its name.

Not sure if they changed all 294 of the business names that trace to a single address, but they did learn a lot from Willi Münzenberg.
