Obama Speaks

[Guest post by DRJ]

He’s spoken a lot in the past two years but tonight is billed as a ‘make or break’ speech for President Obama. Here are two guesses on his strategy:

“So what tack will the embattled president take tonight in his speech? Will he be the earnest Harvard guy, making his best arguments for his legislative initiative, illustrating that he truly believes that this will pass or go down in defeat based on merit — and keep that attitude if it fails? Or will he resort to the usual Democrat tactics of playing the victim of politics, slamming Republicans and other opponents of the bill and employing his very best Saul Alinsky scorched-earth methods, designed to shout down all opposing voices?”

Poll-time:

Also, consider this an open thread for Obama’s speech.

  1. I’m expecting no new proposals, but Obama will repeatedly claim that he’s “always” said that the public option is the best thing but that he’ll stop short of claiming it is a veto if not there. His speech will be spun as saying a lot of things that he’ll never actually say.

And we’ll get a couple of anecdotes that will turn out to be misrepresented and the repetition of long debunked statistical claims like the 46 million uninsured.

  3. Regardless of the outcome of the speach, the mainstream press with sing the praises of Barackula to the high heavens. Remember, this is their guy and he is perceived to be in trouble, and righfully so. They will not let him fail. And as Chris Matthews said it is his job to make Barackula sucessful. This will start minutes after the speach is over and continue for several days.

  43. Dana,

As per my prior comment, this was a partisan speech, trying to rally his base(s).

Dragging Ted’s corpse into his speech isn’t going to change any minds. It’s purely designed to try to stem his loss of support among Democrats.

    Karl (246941)

  44. Well, SPQR, he paid lip service to them anyway. I have not once (and not tonight either) heard him address the specifics of town hallers. To start with: why won’t Congress have to take the public option if the American public is going to? Etc.

    DRJ (6a2898)

  53. DRJ/SPRQ:

Obama would be a horrible college coach for the following reasons:

    1. He would hire a bunch of incompetents as his assistants — they would be diverse and highly admired within a small sector of the coaching community, but they would mostly be seen as mediocrities.

    2. He would recruit blue-chip prospects for the first few years by making outlandish promises about playing time, accommodations, school work, living arrangements, etc., promises that he would quickly abandon. The blue chips would eventually learn that his promises are phony, and they would no longer consider his school.

    3. He would alienate his athletic director, the media, and the alumni by reacting in an outraged and hypersensitive manner to any criticism of his style and methods. That would wear thin very quickly.

    4. He would be the type of coach that always had his eye on a pro job, and he would annually mull over moving up to the big leagues and leaving his current job behind.

    5. He would freeze up during games when it came time to make definitive decision such as “should we call a time out here,” or “do I remove this starter and put in a bench player.” He would delegate the decision to someone else, then kick them to the curb if it turned out to be incorrect.

You are right though that he would give a hell of a locker room speech.

  57. Dana (46),

Ted is only a sympathy card with (some) Democrats. He’s a highly polarizing figure. It’s only well-played if the point was to prop up the base, not caring if you turned off Indies and GOPers. So to that extent, we may agree.

  64. Comment by JD — 9/9/2009 @ 7:37 pm

Don’t you understand, JD? Obama will pay for all of this with the savings from Operation Iraq Feedom (nevermind our obligations to continue helping Iraq rebuild), from Afghanistan (at least when the left forces him to abandon the cause there), and from ending “tax cuts for the rich.” Because, you now, nothing can possibly happen overseas or at home in the next seven years that would potentially lead to any new spending. Not like when that damn Bush cut taxes, even though he knew that in a few short months we would be attacked by Islamic terrorists and would have to spend a great deal of money rebuilding the economy and fighting two wars. Obama can funnel all sorts of money into health care because he knows deep down that educrats won’t be clamoring for more education spending and feminists won’t start making noise about daycare subsidies and environmentalists won’t keep pushing cap and trade and other versions of the carbon tax. Trust him, this will signify the end of the Obama spending spree, and we’ll now turn our attention to deficit reduction.

    JVW (d1215a)

  65. The insistence on lying about this being deficit neutral is an albatross that should be hung around his head at every opportunity.

    JD (e69a5a)

  66. Even if it is deficit neutral (I know, it clearly ain’t), does Obama really have such a lack of self awareness that he thinks he can talk about the deficit? It’s like the Cookie Monster selling Atkins Diet books.

Obama is the deficit. If it’s so bad, then why did Obama let it get so high? Whenever the word ‘deficit’ comes out of his mouth, people remember why they can’t trust this irresponsible ‘leader’.

    Juan (bd4b30)

  67. I’ve given up on Obama ever being fiscally responsible, but my Congresswoman fancies herself a Blue Dog Democrat and I am going to badger her to go on record as promising a deficit neutral health care bill (she is already on record as supporting the public option in full) and I will also challenge her to pledge to support cutting the deficit back to 2007 levels by 2012.

    JVW (d1215a)

  68. #51- GOP Rep. Joe Wilson has apologized for yelling out “You lie!” to Obama during his health care speech in front of Congress:

“This evening I [Congressman Joe Wilson, (R), South Carolina] let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.”

The non-partisan organization FactCheck.org has debunked the claim that health care reform would mandate coverage for illegal immigrants.

During President Obama’s major health care speech on Wednesday, South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson (R) yelled out “You lie!” when the President said the legislation would not mandate coverage for undocumented immigrants. – source HuffingtonPost.com

    DCSCA (9d1bb3)

  69. They debunked a claim not made. Whoopee!

    JD (453b7a)

  70. If I recall correctly, President Obama used to say that 46 million people couldn’t get or did not have medical insurance. Tonight the President said,

“There are now more than 30 million American citizens who cannot get coverage.”

It appears to me that the number used tonight by the President was meant to exclude illegal immigrants from the discussion.

However, are there really 30,000,000 Americans who “cannot get coverage,” or is the number of uninsured about 30,000,000 with many of those either not covered as a matter of choice (e.g., healthy people who would rather spend their money on something other than insurance) or those in a temporarily uninsured condition?

In other words, what is the size of the population of Americans who actually cannot get coverage?

    Ira (28a423)

  71. JVW #53,

I don’t want to sound like a cynic because I really like sports but that sounds like a few of the coaches I’ve run into. Politicians, too.

    DRJ (6a2898)

  72. It appears to me that the number used tonight by the President was meant to exclude illegal immigrants from the discussion.

Astute observation. I bet you’re right, and I’m glad. At least Obama is admitting the injustice that awaits us when this bill goes for a vote or returns from conference without enforcement against illegals getting coverage. Obama seems to have very little control over what congress does, though.

    Juan (bd4b30)

  73. DCSCA, that’s like saying that Texas doesn’t mandate Honda Accords being allowed to drive on the streets.

If they don’t prevent it, it’s going to happen. The democrats mandated illegals getting healthcare when they voted down SAVE enforcement meant to keep illegals from getting health care.

People care about this stuff, and are learning how to go around ‘factcheck’, NYT, CNN, and CBS news to get info. As soon as they figure out how this works, they no longer trust you guys. That’s why Obama’s sunk in the polls. Americans are optimistic and bought Obama’s promises, but the illusion was temporary.

    Juan (bd4b30)

  74. “Some of people’s concerns have grown out of bogus claims spread by those whose only agenda is to kill reform at any cost. The best example is the claim, made not just by radio and cable talk show hosts, but prominent politicians, that we plan to set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off senior citizens. Such a charge would be laughable if it weren’t so cynical and irresponsible. It is a lie, plain and simple.”–El Jefe

You liberal Democrats have already set up panels of bureaucrats with the power to kill off people…and the bureaucrats did so, while spewing lie, after lie, after lie to the people you were killing.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuskegee_syphilis_experiment

When I say I don’t trust you, I’m not being cynical, I’m being realistic, sport, and my agenda is to make sure I don’t wind up like other victims of government controlled health care have wound up…untreated and dead.

    Dave Surls (6e6228)

  75. DCSCA…if it doesn’t mandate coverage, will it simply allow coverage for illegal aliens?

If he law doesn’t specifically mandate OR PREVENT, doesn’t it simply then just allow???

Seems to be how S/S was given to illegal aliens….the law didn’t mandate, or prevent, so the SCOTUS simply allowed it after a lawsuit….

  76. Obama was told not to feed the gorillas in the zoo. He threw a bunch of bananas on the ground, and didn’t specifically mandate gorillas would eat them. When he swore up and down he didn’t feed the animals, the zookeeper called him a liar.

Factcheck.org notes that there was no mandate inherent in the free bananas thrown where gorillas could get them. Unless Obama wrote ‘for gorillas’ on the bananas, all Obama did was make another fruity throw.

The real question is why I or anyone even tries to discuss anything with people who think Sarah Palin is an intellectual and who insist Obama was not born in the US, has death panels in mind, is a racist, is creating socialized medicine..and on and on.
Same crap said about social security and medicare. Check out what Reagan said about medicare being the end of freedom! What a clown he was.
I especially have to laugh at worries about deficits coming from Republicans who apparently again have shown that elephants have short memories.

I agree with the nausea over the hypocrisy of the Dems and the media in the double standard of how they treated Bush vs. what they find acceptable for Obama. At least the Congressman didn’t apologize or back down from his claim.
