Sheila Jackson Lee’s “Public” Notice

Filed under: Politics — DRJ @ 10:27 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

In an article about Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee’s health care town hall meeting held Tuesday 8/11/09 — the meeting attended by “Dr.” Roxana Mayer — the Houston Chronicle reported her constituents and the public were given one day’s notice of the meeting if they called Jackson Lee’s office the day before:

“Several of Jackson Lee’s constituents opposed to the health care plan complained the meetings were never posted on the congresswoman’s Web site. They also said they had called her office repeatedly but were only informed about the meetings when they called the day before it happened.

“Someone kept telling me that it would be on her Web site or they would make a list and call me. But they never did. I was lucky to find out about it,” said Linda Lehman, a retired accountant, who is “terrified” by how much the health care reform package may cost.
***
Allan Meason, another constituent, who thinks the health care bill won’t work without controlling malpractice lawsuits, agreed, “I kept calling every office she had for three weeks.”

In response to a question about why the meeting wasn’t posted on her Web site, Jackson Lee said anyone could learn about it by calling her office. “I will be having a series of these meetings and the notices will be different,” she added.

Other attendees from the Fifth Ward said they had received a notice in their door informing them of the meeting the day before or learned about the forum when showing up for their senior citizen program at the center that day.

Jackson Lee is known for aggressively promoting her events by e-mailing and calling local news media. But the Houston Chronicle didn’t receive any notifications from her office about the Tuesday forum.

But some people may have received advance notice of Jackson Lee’s health care meetings — the Precinct 224 Democrats:

According to the Page Info for that website, the Precinct 224 Democrats knew about Sheila Jackson Lee’s health care meetings no later than August 8, 2009:

  3. DRJ, please tell me that you will be calling SJL’s office to ask for the Congresswoman’s comment.

    God, please.

  4. “Tea-Baggers” are guys what make a big show of dangling their sack into someone’s mouf. For reals you can google it. Sheila Jackson Lee may be a stupid stupid woman but it’s her job to know these things and it’s kind of raunchy for her to be invoking rampant sack dangling in the context of health care reform and I think the Houston Chronicle should report about Sheila’s nutsack fetish. It’s gross.

You think they were being insulting by accident?

  9. Video games are a healthy way to release … feelings I think.

But I think Sheila Jackson Lee is being coarse and vile on purpose in a way that Mr. or Mrs. Republican would be absolutely pilloried for being. Absolutely pilloried. These ones are raunchy and low-rent but think more of how you would quantify the sheer amount of passive aggressiveness contained in how Mrs. Lee glories in her nutsack references.

She’s not just a raunchy blinkered dirty socialist skeezer, she’s a hateful hateful hateful raunchy blinkered dirty socialist skeezer, and yet NPR says be on the lookout for angry stupid poor white guys.

I think the case of Sheila Jackson Lee suggests that there are some far far angrier and stupider skeezey black hoochies what are far more directly impacting the health care debate. brb I think I better email Melissa Block. ok done. It may be a trend or it may be that Mrs. Lee is simply not representing her constituents in a way they can be proud of, but I’d feel more better if NPR at least checked it out.

  10. This one passage alone says it all…

Recently, the Health Care Forums have been dominated by the “Tea-Baggers” opposed to health care reform. We need progressives to show up to help counter the Tea-Baggers.

Big flake Lee (or is that Jackson Lee?) obviously didn’t want any naysayers, or as few as possible, at her meeting. Nothing ambiguous, misunderstood or unclear about the tactics of the Congresswoman’s office whatsoever.

  14. oh. I wasn’t really getting the have to pay for it vibe. Ironically enough. This has a very LA Weekly feel without all the silly hard-hitting journalism cluttering up the page between you and Able and Ready.

I guess tea-bagging must seem a little passe to these Houston Chronicle ones.

  20. This is the same Shelia Jackson Lee who claimed that it was racist to not use “black” names
    for hurricanes, no?

Really, we shouldn’t be railing against her for her debilitating idiocy — we should be thanking her. She is doing exactly what every other Democratic Senator and Congressman holding a town hall meeting is doing; she’s just so adorably stupid she couldn’t figure out how to do it without practically publishing the playbook for all the world to see. Maybe we should name the next hurricane after her in her honor.

  22. I am without representation here in Delaware. Not one of our congress people (we have 1 rep and 2 senators) is having a town hall. Not one. Writing to them just gets boilerplate responses. The Republic is dead.

  24. SJL will never, ever, ever be voted out of her seat. She’s effectively been appointed for life in that district. No chance of removing her. She and her staff are too stupid to draft legislation or anything, and the democrat caucus isn’t crazy enough to let her try, it would only embarrass them. Worst she can do is vote for any hand-out program that comes down the line from Zero.

It is nice to see someone shine a light on her, though. Locally she get’s glowing press from the shiat chronicle and suck-up TV stations. Her posse must be outraged that someone is actually questioning what and how they do things. Thanks patterico.

Don’t feel lonely bio mom, here in Kalifornia with it’s 38+M peoples, our two “Senators” aren’t having any public meetings either (I guess all the translators and “signers” are on vacation).

  27. Great work, Patterico. I love the quote on the Precinct 224 website, above the tea-bagger vulgarity (I agree with you happyfeet, but stop making me laugh at my desk or someone will think I’m not working)

“Democracy works for the people only if people work for Democracy.”

Selecting which constituents go to town hall meetings is not democracy, exposing it is. Cheers

  29. Pct 224 is “Represented” by the following elected officials:
    Precinct 0224 Sub 01
US Representative (007) John A. Culberson
    State Senator (013) Rodney Ellis
    State Representative (134) Ellen Cohen
I think this advance notice to PCT 224 may be tied to Rodney Ellis showing up at both of SJL’s Town Hall meetings.
I personally overheard Ellis saying as he left the Peavy Center, “There are a lot of nutty butters in there”.
Why would Congressman Culberson’s constituents be interested in Sheila’s Town Hall meeting?
I am running against Sheila Jackson Lee for the second time after earning 40,000 votes last election. The more she is in the news the better my chance to defeat her.

  30. Without comprehensive reapportionment reform — which takes the reapportionment process completely out of the hands of politicians — there will always be morons like SJL and Maxine Waters, arrogant clowns like Loretta Sanchez, and irredeemable thugs like Pete Stark in Congress.

Maybe in my lifetime… But I doubt it.

  32. It is so ironic that SJL intentionally informed ahead of time, only the Democrats of her precinct while California Rep. Jerry Lewis has capitol police investigating a *fake* email invitation inviting only Republicans to his town hall!

It may have been meant as a spoof, but a misleading e-mail circulated in advance of Thursday’s public health care forum featuring Inland Rep. Jerry Lewis is being taken seriously by federal authorities.

U.S. Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider confirmed the agency is investigating the source of the e-mail, which was intended to look as if it was sent on behalf of Lewis, R-Redlands.

The hoax e-mail suggested that only Republicans were welcome at the Redlands forum, particularly those who believed President Barack Obama’s health care reform plan “will kill seniors.”
