Obama and the AARP (Updated)

[Guest post by DRJ]

Today in New Hampshire at a “tame” health care townhall meeting, Barack Obama said twice that the AARP has endorsed the Democratic reform bill. However, Jake Tapper notes that the AARP has not officially endorsed any health care bills. But it’s still somewhat true because the AARP is doing everything it can to support Obama’s health care reform.

Let’s file this under True Lies.

UPDATE: GatewayPundit thinks one of the questioners at Obama’s townhall meeting was a plant.

  1. But will the undertakers union support the Obama Deathcare plan?

  4. The AARP has spent so much capital on this. Obama pays them back by pushing them into a corner?

The AARP = cheesy insurance scams that AARP tacks their name on. Now, they either endorse the plan, and look like stooges who were lying all along about their non partisanship, or they don’t endorse the plan, which will only underline how weak Obama’s coalition has become.

Obama is clearly off his game.

  5. Obama is clearly off his game.

I don’t think he was ever ON his game…

It’s just that now the game is televised…

  6. There’s a lot of truth to that, but for some reason, Obama’s bumbling just didn’t seem to get into the people’s heads like it is now.

I do wonder: is Obama’s solution to the problem that he has promised everything to everyone to start letting bills fail and blaming the GOP?

If he did let this bill fail, will he use that to explain why so many of his promises didn’t come true? I think Obama’s worse off if his bill passes, because so many people will blame him for problems, and he probably already got most of the votes from the people who will be happy with the malaise health care they’d get.

  7. The AARP has to be ticked off by this, because they had their spokesperson on with Bill O’Reilly for about 10 minutes last night trying to explain why the Pelosi memo that they were supporting Obamacare was wrong. Calling out Nancy is one thing, because most of the country already thinks she’s a ditz, but Barack’s statement today means they either have to call him out or concede they lied and that Pelosi’s memo had it right to begin with.

  8. AARP deserves everything that happens to them. They have been phonies for years.

  9. AARP and Obama has much in common. SCARE TACTICS!

They (AARP) have been scaring senoir citizens since their inception. AARP’s claim is to protect senoirs from bad policies. There is NO “escape clause” in ObamaCare for senoirs.

    AARP is cooked! Finito!

  10. AARP proved their mendacity a long time ago when they lied and distorted their way through their opposition to Social Security reform. That they would continue to sell out their members should surprise exactly nobody.

    Comment by JD — 8/11/2009 @ 8:28 pm

  11. The AARP will lead their little lambs to the slaughter. They’re cut from the same liberal cloth as Obama.

It’s only a question of timing.

    —-

‘Death Panels’ are built into nationalized health care.

When Britain’s NHS stops a woman’s chemotherapy because they found out she was buying a second drug (which they had previously refused to pay for) and she dies from colon cancer, then that’s a ‘death panel’.

When the NHS refuses a liver transplant to a 22 year old man because he was a childhood alcoholic, and he dies in the hospital of liver failure, that’s a ‘death panel’.

When the elderly are refused care because they don’t have enough ‘productive years’ left, that’s a ‘death panel’ too.

And ‘death panels’ don’t necessarily involve ‘death’. Just unimaginable human suffering.

The NHS passed a rule on treatment for macular degeneration. The patient would not qualify for care until they went BLIND IN ONE EYE.

It took 25,000 cases of TOTAL BLINDNESS from macular degeneration for the NHS to rescind this inhuman rule.

And how’d you like to be diagnosed with prostate cancer, or other type, and be told there’s a six-month wait for chemo or radiation therapy?

Every day for six months, more or less, you’ll have to face another day of horror wondering if you’ll make it to treatment or become terminal as so many have on these waiting lists.

It’s all lies. Government-run healthcare is a DEATH SENTENCE.

  12. There’s a vid of a recent townhall meeting in Dallas with the local AARP group – as soon as some of the retirees start asking them questions about their alleged support for the healthcare bill, they become enraged and stalk out of the room. Speaks volumes about their mendacity:

Their bitchy moderator must be seen to be believed.

  14. DMAC, that lady captures the essence of elitism.

She’s not even eligible for AARP membership. She has no idea that she’s supposed to represent the views of the elderly. She should be fighting against Obama’s death panels.

I hope she’s absorbed some kind of lesson out of all this. God Bless Texas.

  15. They should have changed the banner from “Work Shall Set You Free”,
to “National Health Care Means Freedom“!
The result would have been the same.

  16. My theory is that the AARP moderator isn’t a Texan and that they sent her from the home office. Alternatively, I like to think she’s from East Texas.

  19. lol. Have you seen ‘Hands on a Hard Body’? It’s an amazing documentary that gets to the heart of East Texas. I love the place, but I grant it’s probably one of the most annoying places on Earth to many people.

  21. Did anyone else get something in the mail from AARP today? They want me to buy Life Insurance. I guess they know that’s what we older folks (I just turned 57) will need most with the coming reforms. Here’s hoping everyone who received the mailing today gets the message. Forget health care, buy life insurance!

I’m just sorry I’m not a member so I can’t cancel my membership.

  22. I’ve updated the post with a link to GatewayPundit, who thinks the little girl who asked Obama a question at the New Hampshire townhall meeting was a plant.

  23. Can’t get no love ’round here! While my home is in the hill country, I’ll always enjoy going back to East Texas almost as much as I enjoy getting out of there a couple of days later. Something unintentionally charming about them parts.

BA, it’s a badge of shame all around the nation to become eligible for AARP membership. It seems like everything about the organization is ugly and feels wrong.

their commercial that I just saw on TV is an aged man being pulled over for a traffic ticket, and the snotty cop is the one selling the AARP insurance! I like cops, but when they’re writing me a ticket? Strange choice. Alas, AARP wants the government to help it sell you other products. They make money off prescription drug coverage, thanks in part to Bush. They intend the same from Obama for health insurance.

  24. Juan,

I haven’t seen the documentary you mentioned, but I can vouch for the beauty of East Texas. It’s a lot greener than where I live in West Texas.

  25. Obama had a planted question? Water is wet.

BTW, I watched Crissy Mathews tonite. He is apparently trying to keep up with Olbergasm and MadCow. Did you know that people are opposed to socialized medicine because Barcky is half-black?

  26. I went to school at Tech. Great people, but I got tired of the water and the raining mud. Still a huge Tech football fan.

You simply HAVE to see this documentary. I believe it was made by UT Law students. It won a few awards and was in theaters in Austin for years.

    Here’s a clip.

  27. JD, of course, that explains why people were opposed to it in 1993, as Hillary is half woman.

    Comment by Juan — 8/11/2009 @ 10:04 pm

  28. Between Gov. Rendell and Crissy Matthews, I learned that people opposed to socialized medicine are birthers and racists bought and paid for by K-street lobbyists.

Soros’ millions, SEIU, AFSCME, Organizing For America, etal is good and noble though.

  31. My grandfather is in his 90′s, and has yet to join the AARP…

He also is the man who bought me both books from Rush, Hannity’s book, and told Grandma to get me Beck’s last two books.

I do so love that man.

  32. We canceled our membership last week.
I wonder how many Americans are of like mind.
We are sStill waiting on our refund.

  33. I have been opposed to the American Association of Rinkled People (AARP) for a long time now. I turn 50 this year, and my wife and I keep getting invitations.

I turn back the postage paid envelopes EMPTY. Since they have to pay for the postage, it is a drain on their resources. I urge everyone to do the same.

Besides AAA gives almost all of the same discounts, and there’s a cool FREE iPhone app to help you locate where the AAA discounts are valid.

  34. There’s a new AARP out in America. Picture Clint Eastwood as Walt Kowalski in Gran Torino with his M1. AARP=”Armed And Really Pissed”.

  35. Re plants:

See Michelle Malkin’s column for the general theme, and this for info on the little girl.

Hope and change and transparancy, oh my!

  36. More annoying than the AARP, was Olberman’s reaction to the NH town hall. He congratulated Obama for picking his crowd so well. Wasn’t Bush excoriated for that very thing?

    Comment by Soronel Haetir — 8/12/2009 @ 11:09 pm

  37. MediaCurves.com just conducted a study with 306 viewers of a pro health care reform ad by the AARP. The results showed that the ad failed to increase favorability levels across all political parties. The study also found that 82% of Democrats and 66% of Independents reported that the AARP ad was effective, compared to 42% of Republicans who indicated that it was effective.
