In reading many comments submitted throughout the multitude of news sites and blogs, it seems that open bias and prejudice based on ignorance is a point of pride for many given the way in which it is so proudly on display. First, latins are not a race but an ethnicity because we come in all races including white (Spain, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Greece, etc), yellow (China, Japan) and black (Africa). Our religions are also extensive including that right wing favorite Christian Fundamentalism, and the more predominant Roman Catholic which of course is conservative but not included in the preferred Neo-Nazi lists. So before you uninformed white people mouth off about who is what, read a stinking history book of something that is not one-sided. If the woman speaks funny, it probably isn’t because she is latin but rather than she grew up in the Bronx. Like many latins, her spanish probably sucks because more than 75% have english as our dominant language. George HW Bush has a mind that outpaces his mouth but George W Bush has a mind that is outpaced by just about everything. As to SCOTUS, you have a minority who is an idiot and should not be there but is loved by those who agree with his views, you have an old white guy who refuses to retire or die in order to save the liberal day, and a Chief Justice who should have been hired at entry level rather than given charge of the company.

OMG, grammatical errors? How rich! This is ~~representative of a longstanding commitment to caring about grammar, as with all of Dubya’s made-up words and misstatements~~ totally fresh and new! And just so gosh darn funny to boot! Well done, sir, well done.

I have listened to this again and I think you are picking nits. To my tone deaf ear the two words sound almost identical when spoken just like pin and pen. When said quickly they are almost indecipherable (to me). Here is a link to a guy who is in the news for another reason.

Right at the beginning of the clip he says Capitol Heal. It is obviously his accent/manner of speaking. I am fairly certain he knows the difference between the two words and could spell them if asked. From the context alone I understood he was saying hill and likewise there was absolutely no confusion when Sotomayor spoke. I am not a fan and hope she doesn’t get confirmed but I think you all have completely jumped the shark on this one.

You might be right but as far as I know there is no requirement that a Supreme Court Justice be born in the US. So to me the matter is moot.

However regarding the presidency there is a requirement. Proof has not been established except in the minds of those who wish to believe.

I do require proof however. Obama remains our first Kenyan president.

Can everyone out there really tell a clear difference between eminence and imminence when spoken?
I understand the criticism of the rest of her goofs. If someone asks you to hand them a pen and your have a pincussion filled with pins in front of you would you ask, “Do you mean a Pin?”

They sound pretty close to me. Close enough to be attributed to regional accents or some such. Just askin……

I guess I’d have to have people with many different accents say both words in order to say for sure but listening to Sotomayer speak, what comes out sounds precisely like what would come out if she were intending to say ‘eminent’ (high, lofty; an inappropriate word in this context) and nothing at all like she intended to say ‘imminent’ (likely to happen without delay; the word that is appropriate in this context). So the quick answer is, no, I don’t know that there is no regional accent that would make a speaker who is intending to say ‘imminent’ sound like she is saying ‘eminent’. My gut feeling is that she confused the two words.
