Monday’s Dinner in Chicago

Filed under: General — DRJ @ 9:19 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

An invitation from JD:

“There is a group of us meeting for dinner tomorrow night in the Chicagoland area. We are having dinner with happyfeet, daleyrocks, nk, myself, Karl, geoffb, and hopefully Dmac and carlitos as well. Anyone that would like to join us just let me know, and I will shoot you the info.”

Contact JD (johndallenATsbcglobalDOTnet) or nk (njkritAThotmailDOTcom) if you are interested. NK says bring your own bail money and daleyrocks said something about a kilt

  1. Thank you, DRJ.

    nk (b988bc)

  2. I promise that I will not go commando with the kilt, again.

    JD (bdcd86)

  3. My pleasure, nk. I wish I could be there and I know you will have a great time. And I expect photos of any kilts.

    DRJ (6f3f43)

  4. Ditto on the thanks thingie … my manners leave a bit to be desired.

    JD (bdcd86)

  5. And I expect photos of any kilts.

I expect hope it’s like me saying I’m the reincarnation of Cleopatra. Don’t anybody expect to see me in a pageboy and never mind about my asp.

    nk (b988bc)

  6. O ye of little faith …

    JD (bdcd86)

  7. where is one of these for Lost Angels?

come on Pat: what kind of food do you like?

we could always meet at the Papadoufus Taverna in San Pedro: the food is good, and the entertainment is ‘interesting’…..

    redc1c4 (fb8750)

  8. “Instant set-up” Oh say, JD, is anything worn under the kilt?

    Gazzer (10bcc0)

  9. GAH! Why was I not told sooner??? Must… Find… Way… To Chicago…

Where in town is this get together? Depending on where, I MIGHT be able to make it…

    Scott Jacobs (d027b8)

  10. Dare I say this thread is suspiciously like community organizing – in Chicago?”

    Ed from SFV (fabfbd)

  11. Gazzer – Freeballin’ under the kilt is the only way to go.

    JD (92df48)

  12. No one said what kind of food in the post. I kind of suspect Phil Stefani is a dirty dirty socialist or at least a shameless dirty socialist suck up. We’re not going to one of those ones. It’s more of a pizza thing is my understanding. So it won’t be like one of those evenings where you have to go to the ATM twice is my point. It’s good to let people know that I think cause of there’s a recession.

    happyfeet (d4866a)

  13. Pics or it didn’t happen?

    HowdySir (3dd922)

  14. Lou Malnati’s traditional Chicago deep dish pie. Personally, I think it is the quintessential example of Chicago-style pie, but tastes vary. You were spot on about Phil’s, happyfeet.

    JD (92df48)

  15. Kilts were invented by the Scots and Irish ’cause sheep can hear zippers…

    metalhead (42282a)

  16. Dang, I was in Chicago Sunday to pick up parts for my T-Bird. Wish I would have known and steered the date to Sunday. Road side Mickey D’s is so worthless, plus there is no company.

    PCD (02f8c1)

  17. Metalhead – That was soooooo wrong and so funny.

PCD – Plenty of time to turn around.

    JD (92df48)

  18. This group will henceforth be known as the “Chicago 7.”

[with apologies to Hoffman, Rubin, Dellinger, Hayden, Davis, Froines, and Wiener]

    Official Internet Data Office (62caf8)

  19. JD, Yeah, but I’d spend more on tolls than what the pizza would cost.

    PCD (02f8c1)

  20. Pizza is on me !

    JD (5fba8c)

  21. Thanks to DRJ from this corner as well. If I can get back in time from the garden spot that is better known as Kankakee (more like the armpit of IL), I’ll be there.

    Dmac (e6d1c2)

  22. I will be there 6:30ish, depending on Kennedy traffic.

    carlitos (268320)

  23. Sorry, I’ll be putting on those car parts that I picked up.

    PCD (02f8c1)

  24. Let me know. I’d love to visit with you guys

    timb (8f04c0)

  25. Possibly the timing of Kim Jong-Il’s death would determine the future of NK, rather than his death itself.

    Dana (57e332)

  26. argh… wrong thread.

    Dana (57e332)

  27. Do another one in October during the College of Surgeons meeting and I’ll be there.

    Mike K (2cf494)

  28. Sorry, but that drive will add at least an hour + from where I’m at presently. No way I’ll make that one. Maybe next time.

    Dmac (e6d1c2)

  29. I stand 100% behind men going commando while wearing kilts.

    MayBee (c43923)

  30. Even the creepy little one is invited.

Mike K – No problem. Email me and I will be happy to coordinate when you are in town.

MayBee – No pics of that …

    JD (3b62be)

  31. I’m not having any pizza on JD.

    Karl (f07e38)

  32. To clarify: I am going, but am insisting on a plate.

    carlitos,

Keep an ear peeled to the traffic reports; the Ike/53 route may be equally viable to the Kennedy.

    Karl (f07e38)

  33. Thanks anyway, JD. But, not only do I foresee being given innumerable wedgies, but I got some studying to do here in Indy and Grandma is watching the kids for THE WEEK!!! Grandparents are muy cool

    timb (8f04c0)

  34. That is the second time you have declined an invite. I am beginning to think you do not like me 😉

    JD (46cf2b)

  35. Hmmm…I don’t have any reason to attend a College of Surgeons meeting (except as somebody’s entry in the projects category) but pizza in October? Keep me in mind, JD!

    EW1(SG) (edc268)

  36. oh.I already told everybody I was having pizza with timmy.

    hf (9bda9c)

  37. EW1 – email me your contact info so I can keep you posted.

    JD (46cf2b)

  38. Can’t make it this time, kids… Give me more lead-time, and I know I could…

Aug 27th is my day in front of the hearing board for license reinstatement, and a few weeks after that I’ll know… So some time around then I’ll actually be able to drive to Chicago.

    Scott Jacobs (d027b8)

  39. Scott – Are you in Peoria or Bloomington tomorrow?

    JD (cc3aa7)

  40. Peoria. Have to go finish cleaning the room I left at Dad’s. Should be back in Bloomington Wed night (which is reserved for the season premier of Leverage on TNT).

    Scott Jacobs (d027b8)

  41. So, any kilt soccer this evening?

    HeavenSent (641cde)

  42. I can tell but I’ll wait until Karl posts.

    nk (1e550c)

  43. Still. Burping. Chicago-style deep dish is the best.

    carlitos (268320)

  44. If you think Dirty Cowboy is NSFW, you definitely do not want to witness JD eating.

    daleyrocks (718861)

  45. Chicagoland sheep remain safe.

    JD (3b62be)

  46. I think I forgot to explicitly say thank you JD for the pizza. That’s not something I can get at home at all. I’m glad we did that. It was a privilege to meet Karl after knowing him forever and nk you should know is actually very nice and not mean at all and he made origamis. nk. There are depths. You can just tell. I didn’t get to meet carlitos or Mr. daleyrocks as well as I would have liked cause of the table was sort of designed to seat people what you already know and they were way over there. Major LTC John is as immensely likeable as you would have thought and if that’s what you would have thought you would have been right. geoff and his wife were salt of the earth – I only know two people like that in Los Angeles and usually I have to go to Texas to meet people like that.

    happyfeet (d4866a)

  47. “Chicagoland sheep remain safe.”

Or so you claim. Nobody knows what happened on the drive back to your hotel and as the saying goes, if you didn’t get caught, it didn’t happen.

    daleyrocks (718861)

  48. It was great meeting everyone, some for the first time, some again. I am fortunate.

    JD (f1bef5)

  49. I’m on the Wrong Coast for these kinds of meetings, sadly.

On the other hand, I should only eat Chicago style pizza in the presence of a trained physician, reading to do on site CPR.

I’m glad it was a good meetup.

    Eric Blair (acade1)

  50. We had 9 people there. A couplr friends were unable to make it, and we were surprised by a visit from a lurker, “BT”. Also, one of you from Hyde Park, we are all interested in meeting, and wish you could have made it.

    Thanks to all …

    JD (f1bef5)

  51. I think a photo would be interesting. However, I understand the anonymity issue…

    Eric Blair (acade1)

  52. It was not pretty. We were truly a group of remarkably unattractive people. Pictures would onLy serve to scare chuldren.

    JD (f1bef5)

  53. Now, JD, that is the flip side. Remember that deeply ugly photographs make average people feel positively supermodel-ish.

I suspect the problem was the kilts. Let’s face it: they aren’t flattering to most people.

    Eric Blair (acade1)

  54. Speak for yourself. I look positively devastatingly handsome in a kilt

    JD (f1bef5)

  55. I will second or third what everyone else said. It was a good time and fun to meet up with some names I recognize from here. Thanks to JD who was stupid er nice enough to invite me. Also eveyone was very pro Obama, that was surprising. Must have been the pizza.

    BT (78b929)

  56. JD was our host, by the way. Thank you again, JD.
Although I think I kind of embarassed him when I pulled out my daughter’s pictures and asked to see his (daughters’).
Not everybody there was long in the tooth, like me. Actually, most were men in the prime of life. Ladies, you might want to consider showing up on these things, too.

The pizza was fine, but I latched on to a redheaded lady bartender who kept plying me with whiskey and beer. As I had planned (I took a cab)… heh, heh, heh.

    nk (1e550c)

  57. nk left in a limo!

I was going to totally wuss out on posting something about politics today by doing an after-action report on the dinner, but since folks already commented here, I’ll add my two cents.

I was at the table with nk, hf and Major LTC John. nk made the origami cranes, which were nice and did not inspire us to wage jihad upon him. Major LTC John (if that’s the correct rank) shared some stories about milblogging and being recognized in places like the Baghdad airport. We also learned how his pics ended up with Instapundit, and not with another A-List blogger frequently mocked here. And it’s nice to have a face in mind now when I type…

    feets!

We also schooled feets on the wonder of Disco Demolition Night.

As noted by hf, I didn’t get to talk to the folks at the other table as much. I did get to catch up with daleyrocks a bit and second what hf said about geoffb and his lovely wife (with whom I talked a little Palin).

I hitched a ride with carlitos to and from the dinner; he and I talked mostly about music and how the fragmentation and slow death death of music radio was sorta smiliar to the death of newspapers. I thank him again for putting up with me, and for his city radar.

I also thank JD for setting the whole thing up, and staying at the other table, so I didn’t have to be horrified by his kilt-lifting every time the barmaid came by.

    Karl (ade276)

  58. oh. It’s LTC John for real… I just say Maj LTC sometimes cause that’s how so many people know him and may not have heard of his promotion.

    hf (9bda9c)

  59. I thought it was just LTC, but didn’t know if they did rank differently in his branch.

    Karl (f07e38)

  60. JD, I’d have dinner with you and a group of pals any time, just to hear basketball stories. But, happyfeet? Dude, it would have to be a large group with a strong police presence. You call moderates dirty effing socialists, I’m not sure how long it would be before you tried to jump an actual liberal who listens to NPR!

JD is wrong about politics, but he’s not generally violent. Happyfeet’s temper in the last 8 months is slightly worrying to me. I remember when happy was funny…

    timb (8f04c0)

  61. Karl and Carlitos are sadly correct about the state of radio these days – Clear Channel and their relentless homogenation of every single market has killed any originality left. Next time I’ll relate some the crazy tales of my days in the radio sales biz in Chicago during the mid – 80’s, when everything was literally up in the air. Good dirt on some well – known personalities will commence.

    Dmac (e6d1c2)

  62. I don’t know happy personally, timb, but I think that some of our current POTUS’s policies and the venom that still emanates from some of his manic defenders may be the underlying cause of that snark. He’s still not anywhere near the unhinged ranting that we saw from some of the folks on the other side during the Bush ears, IMHO. Saying someone is a dirty socialist is one thing, calling others the illegal bastard children of Hitler is quite another.

    Dmac (e6d1c2)

    feets!

A girl just cries at the missing of it all.

    MayBee (781c96)

  64. With construction, traffic, and tolls, I had a 4 hour drive each way on SUNDAY just to Orland Park. I don’t know what it would been like for me Monday, but I think I’d have been parked in my car on the 88 and have missed the pizza, too.

    PCD (02f8c1)

  65. JD writes:

“…Speak for yourself. I look positively devastatingly handsome in a kilt..”

Let the retorts and trash talk begin! And JD, please ask your wife to comment on that statement, and transcribe her response.

But since photographs do not exist, let me quote my late grandfather: talk is cheap; whiskey costs money (as he would tell me when we were playing poker).

    Eric Blair (acade1)

  66. Hi MayBee. Mr. Patterico said we might could have a dinner this summer. We’ll see. Feels like summer is going by very fast as our little country rushes headlong into a hellish centrally-planned abyss.

Hi Timmy. We missed you at pizza. You know what? I like to think I got out in front of the anger curve. We’ll see, but it’s definitely an I will bet money thing that my little puffs of enthusiastic malcontentedness amount to not a lot if you think about the rage what is coming. Rage of which the poets will sing I think.

    hf (9bda9c)

  67. MayBee – You were there in spirit, and we only spoke kind words about you.

    JD (1206f2)

  68. an actual liberal who listens to NPR!
    Comment by timb — 7/14/2009 @ 7:51 am

I told happyfeet that I listened to NPR and I had my eyes on his hands the whole time and although his fingers twitched a little he never reached for that California bowie strapped to his leg.

    nk (1e550c)

  69. I do not happyfeet ever being violent. Methinks that was an asspull.

    JD (1206f2)

  70. Dmac,

While it’s true that FM became overly-formatted and squeezed out airplay for local bands, etc., I was also noting that AM music radio, in its heyday, was a place you could hear Led Zeppelin back-to-back with the Jackson 5 and Dolly Parton. The move to Abrams-esque FM formats was sort of the tip of the iceberg of fragmentation, that accelerated to warp speed once the Internet got all Napstery. We gain a lot from that, but we do also lose something of a common culture. In that sense, the “editorial judgment” of WLS and WCFL in the 60s & 70s was a lot more diverse than the “editorial judgment” of the New York Times.

    Karl (f07e38)

  71. When I was a kid, in the mid 60s, you would hear the Beachboys, Beatles, Dean Martin (Houston) and Dave Dudley (6 Days On The Road) all in 20 minutes or so. It was a great way to be exposed to alot of different stuff. you do not get that today.

    BT (78b929)

  72. Semi-related:

Allahpundit also left the cave last night to drinking with actress Barret Swatek, FNC’s Shelly Roche and Bill Schulz, and television’s Andy Levy. But he took the picture to avoid appearing in it.

    Karl (f07e38)

  73. Why wasn’t I invited? That’s not fair. 🙂

    The Emperor (1b037c)

  74. 72, Maybe because NO ONE LIKES YOU.

    PCD (02f8c1)

  75. I’d sit and have a meal with Emp any time. I’d sit down to a meal with pretty much anyone on here, in fact (but the women go to the front of the line, and I’d buy). 🙂

    Scott Jacobs (ed2c09)

  76. Maybe because NO ONE LIKES YOU.

    Comment by PCD — 7/14/2009 @ 10:46 am
Okay, PCD. I GET IT! You don’t like me. I get that. But I am sure you are not speaking for everyone on this blog. DRJ for example will disagree with you. So also Scott Jacobs. And many others.
@74. Thanks Scotty. You da man!

    The Emperor (0c8c2c)

  77. Everyone was invited, Emperor.

    JD (ac4a62)

  78. I just confirmed that, JD. Thanks anyway. (From reading the invitation on the post.) Hope it was fun.

jdizzle, happy is aware I was both chiding him and teasing him and he took it in that spirit. NK’s post was even funnier and the same. Get with the spirit dude. You can call me a liar on other threads. Here, we were just playin’.

Oh, and happy, I doubt you’re correct, but strong dissent is what made American partisan and without distracting with partisan chaff, the folks in the middle couldn’t get rich, see Goldman Sachs c. 2008 to the present. Nothing like owning consecutive administrations!

    timb (54f935)

  80. JD’s new nickname just became “jdizzle”…

    Scott Jacobs (ed2c09)

  81. I am thinking bad impure bad thoughts in your general direction, while farting in a similar manner.

    JD (7f75c9)

  82. It was kind of embarrassing when we had to restrain that waiter when he started yelling at feets when feets tried to order that deep dish pizza stuffed with pineapple and mango and topped with sushi. The waiter flipped out and started ranting about not making that California sissy food in Chicago or something. It was a little tough to catch all of it with LTC John choking him out and his face turning purple.

Somebody shoulda given feets a heads up about Chicago pizza is all. Just sayin’.

    daleyrocks (718861)

  83. I was also offended that for some reason JD did not want to take home the rainbow assortment of peeps I brought to dinner just for him. Now I’ll have to regift them.

    daleyrocks (718861)

  84. Nuke ’em, daley. Peeps shall not cross the threshold de mi casa.
