12:34:56 7/8/9
[Guest post by DRJ]
Jules Crittenden points out that today at 12:34 PM and 56 seconds it was 12:34:56 7/8/9 … and I missed it. Actually, I was there but I didn’t realize it.
Darn.
But it’s still pretty neat.

I think it will be 81 years until that happens again …
Comment by JD — 7/8/2009 @ 7:55 pm
Cool, so when it comes around again I’ll have had some time to figure out exactly what I should do to celebrate the occasion …

Not to worry, you can look forward to 12:34:56 /7/8/09 for locales that use DD/MM/YY.

81 years from now, it will be 12:34:56 7/8/90.

It also works for 01:23:45 6/7/89, which means we only have to wait 80 years instead of 81.

See, I am never the smart one …

Celebrate this the way you should celebrate everything: by drinking heavily.

Wow, just about that time I fell to the floor in a swoon and saw a vision of the future.
You don’t want to know.

I live in Europe where they put the day before the month. So I’ll get to experience this glorious moment on 7 August.

DRJ’s comment tickled my funny bone for some reason, maybe because it reminds me of CS Lewis’ irritation (disguised as a demon’s delighted POV in The Screwtape Letters) with those who say “the future belongs to [insert ideal kind of people here]” instead of recognizing that the future comes to everyone on Earth at the same rate, 60 minutes an hour, no matter who we are.
Fun calendar fact!

I remember seeing back in 1978 seeing a TV news report about a guy who arranged with a supermarket to ring up an item at 12:34 pm on May 6, 1978 so he could have a paper record of the moment of 12:34 5/6/78.
I was marking something on an accounting sheet at 9:15 pm yesterday when I realized I had missed this century’s 1-9 moment. Meh. I can live with that if I am not a second late for something really important.
