Bo’s Official Portrait

Filed under: Obama — DRJ @ 5:23 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

It’s Friday and the Presidential approval index is down to +1 so it’s time for another Obama human interest story that I call The Obama Show.

This week they went with that all-American favorite, Puppy Bo in his official portrait:

Puppy Bo

He’s a really cute dog. I put his approval index at +100.

  1. And his week of infomercials begins soon!

    Patricia (2183bb)

  2. A dog needs to have dog people. I don’t think the Obamas are the right humans for him. If they were, they would have been some dog’s already.

    nk (d111a3)

  3. nk, it’s funny you should say that. I was looking at some pictures of the Obamas after they’d acquired Bo and my first thought was, “These are NOT dog people.” Dog people get down on the ground to play with their dogs. They don’t keep their distance so their designer clothes don’t get dirty.

    wherestherum (d413fd)

  4. Yeah – they’re “getting a dog for effect” people. That’s why he’s named after (most of) Barack Obama’s intitials. That is one nice looking dog, though.

Maybe after being under Obama’s rule for 6 months, Bo will start to dislike him. That’s all it took for America.

  5. Bunch of Negative Nancies, you folks are.

    Oh well.

    Cheney sucks.

    Leviticus (20b7ac)

  6. I like the dog, Leviticus. You gotta give me that.

    DRJ (180b67)

  7. Is it a Standard Poodle? Those dogs are awesome, lots of them in my ‘hood lately. Quite friendly, and no shedding.

    Dmac (f7884d)

  8. Well, at least they didn’t terrorize New York to get that picture.

    JayC (974ba4)

  9. Here are Cheney’s dogs dressed for Halloween 2007 when some were comparing Cheney to Darth Vader.

    DRJ (180b67)

  10. Dmac,

It’s a Portuguese water dog from Texas.

    DRJ (180b67)

  11. Maybe the dog should be put in charge of everything. It’s not like he could do a worse job….

    Blacque Jacques Shellacque (1641e7)

  12. The daughter has been asking for her own dog, but she’s only seven, so he or she will really be mine for the next five years or so. I keep picturing a short drab coat, droopy ears and droopy jowls, which somehow remind me of my mother’s last dog, some hound of dubious parentage.

  13. Bassett hounds rule !

    Mike K (90939b)

  14. Thank you, Mike K. My neighbor got a basset hound (mostly), it was rescue, and he’s a sweetheart. We will also go rescue.

    nk (d111a3)

  15. The Empty Suit(tm) has a dog.

  16. I grew up with Scotties and Goldens – would love to have another, but not in our condo. So it’s cats for now, and they’re terrific as well.

    Dmac (f7884d)

  17. We had a golden retriever named Norman – dumb as a rock, but the sweetest dog I ever met. I loved that dog. We put him down last year – he was 14. I went to the vet with my parents to see him off. It was one of the saddest 30 minutes of my young life.

    Leviticus (20b7ac)

  18. Leviticus, I know what you are feeling. At least you were there, with the dog, at the end. Trust me: it matters.

I don’t know if you still feel grief about it (and I am sorry if I am intruding). There is an essay that you should read, if you are still grieving at bit. And even if you are not.

    http://www.english.upenn.edu/~cavitch/pdf-library/Hearne_OyezABeaumont.pdf

It is from the late Vicki Hearne’s truly fine book, “Animal Happiness.”

For anyone who has lost a beloved pet, harken to Beaumont, in Hearne’s essay, linked above.

Again, I don’t mean to stick my nose where it doesn’t belong. But you know the old Sufi expression: once you let the nose of a camel into your tent, the other end soon follows.

    I miss my own dogs.

    Eric Blair (0b61b2)

  19. My father was a tough, practical man but when his dog died he cried. He never got another one. My mother adopted a puppy, but my father would not have anything to do with it.

    nk (d111a3)

  20. Our vet once said “getting a dog is making an appointment for a broken heart”. Very true, but well worth it.

    Red County Pete (3a3ced)

  21. ‘Tis always a pity when a good dog is wasted. Bo appears to fit that bill.

    bob (466a1d)

  22. Eric Blair,

You’re not intruding. I don’t still feel grief about it – like I said, he was fourteen, decrepit, couldn’t stand on his own – it was the right thing to do. But for thiry minutes, I wanted to scream with grief. Then I was… okay.

Anyway. I still have his collar. He was one of those formative dogs, and I’ll miss him. But you’re not intruding; thanks for the sentiment.

    Leviticus (20b7ac)

  23. Dear Leviticus:

Of course it can be the right thing to do, but as you know it can still be very painful. I carry the old tags for both of my former dogs on my key fob, to remind me of good days and bad days both.

Most of all, dogs taught me the lesson that Hearne quoted from Wittgenstein: “Denn lebt er ewig, der in der gegenwart lebt.” (= so he lives forever, who lives in the present).

Dogs are special, and the lessons they teach us more special still, if we will only listen.

I’ll have a quick brandy in memory of Norman. Then turn in for the evening.

    Eric Blair (5a226d)

  24. Hey, what about cats? Are you racist or something?

    Patricia (2183bb)

  25. Thank you, good sir. I’ll have (that is, at this point, “I’ve had”) four or five Cuba Libres in memory of Norman, my dog, and Summer, the girl that I loved, and the other razor-edged causes of man’s general state of melancholy.

    It’s one of those nights.

    Leviticus (20b7ac)

  26. “Sadly, Bo’s tenure at the White House ended abruptly when he was offered as a side-dish to the visiting North Korean envoy.”

    Californio (6657ce)

  27. P.S. that dog looks stupid. My late border collie would have snuck down into the war room and changed the launch codes in the nuclear “football” before anyone knew what hit them. (new launch target? “Squirrels, Damn them to Hell!”)

    Californio (6657ce)

  28. I’ve not had a dog since I was 17, and I recently turned 60. I really can’t have one with all the traveling I do, because I am alone.

I’d love to have a dawg* or several, but that will need to wait for retirement. At the rate things are going, retirement will come when I drop dead at work.

*Dawgs are different from other dogs. A dawg is a nice comfortable, intelligent, loyal friend; they are not show-pieces owned for the bragging rights they may provide.

    the friendly grizzly (45101f)

  29. The Obamas chose a great breed, I have yet to meet a hostile or unsociable PWD. I hope he gets some pool time.

And Bo was a better pick than “TurboTax” Geithner or “Blame Canada” Napolitano. Arf-Arf!

    furious (71af32)

  30. These types of things always remind me of when Teh One staged that photo op of him riding bikes with his daughters, and his bike had 2 flat tires. There is a message hidden deep in that, somewhere.

    JD (cb96c4)

  31. Yep, deeply hidden, JD. The hidden message, which I will explain slowly for DCSCA and his troll buddies, is – that these PR stunts are all fake.

This is not a dog, it is a PR puppet. Nothing, absolutely nothing more.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  32. Bo Obama…best appointment in the entire administration. Which speaks well for him, not so well for the administration.

    Rich Fader (295108)

  33. He’s a really cute dog. I put his approval index at +100.

Oh…but that’s what they WANT you to think. Behind that adorable exterior is the scheming cold heart of a socialist, commmunist and fascist all wrapped up into one great big subversive canine plot to destroy America and turn it into a mere shadow of the greatness it once contained. Every photo of that little pup is taking away our freedoms and I for one will not stand for it. That dog is an empty suit. It in no way qualified to be first dog of this red, white and blue nation of righteous liberty loving individuals. That’s right…a tax and spend commie liberal baby killer. Shudder. Bo is anti-freedom, anti-life, anti-capitalism and dreams of the day he can “accidentally” piss on Rush Limbaugh’s leg.

Plus, he was over heard making tasteless jokes about the Palin girls…

I could do this all day….but I think you get the idea. (Because phony empty manipulative crap Right-wing criticism is the simplest thing in the world to do.)

*Sends telepathic message to Bo to continue his evil liberal commie machinations*

    ROTFLMAO!!!

    Priceless.

  35. I think that trolls like that one are just precious. Even better when they insult the host.

    JD (f086e6)

  36. PP just likes to, well, PP here. You know, JD.

By the way, JD, is this a new one? Or one of the Usual Suspects?

    Eric Blair (5a226d)

  37. I will have to let you know. Mendoucheous twatwaffle, beyond a shadow of a doubt. Now, it is only a question of degree.

    JD (fd00fa)

  38. Petty Pat…heh, whenever I quickly read the name, I always think Pitty Pat. Makes me giggle every time.

    Dana (8d88ef)

  39. nk, I know a great bassett rescue group here. We got our second bassett, Charlie, from them. He was partly paraplegic from spinal stenosis but the most wonderful dog I’ve ever had. When we took him home, he had his hind legs in a little wheeled cart. After he was here a week or two, he didn’t need the cart anymore and we returned it. He could walk around the block with us although his hind legs sort of went sideways.

I looked into getting his back operated on but everybody decided he was too old for it to be helpful. Anyway, he was with us about five years until we had to put him to sleep. I held him as he went and we have his ashes.

Bassetts are wonderful dogs. So are goldens and I had one for years.

    MIke K (90939b)

  40. The dog looks like a lib to me, it should be put down.

    Ken (67885e)

  41. No, no, no. We don’t say that about any liberal but especially not cute liberal dogs.

    DRJ (cdbef5)

  42. They don’t point or hold and they need pretty constant grooming. Well, at least they can retreive.

  44. Does this sound like it doesn’t matter who ends up the winner ?

I spoke with my father last night who is [in Iran]… [He] told me the common sentiment among the protestors is that of incredible resolve. He said that from what he’s heard, this will not stop until the Ayatollah himself is overthrown. As he put it, “Even if a million people (Moussavi supporters) die, they will not back down”.

That’s from the Huffington Post, by the way. Not all lefties are slavish Obamabots.
