More Swine Flu Cases Stemming from Mexico

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 7:40 am

The AP reports more swine flu outbreaks stemming from Mexico:

New Zealand reported suspected swine flu cases Monday in a second group of teenage students returning from Mexico, as Asian nations with potent memories of SARS and bird flu outbreaks screened travelers for fever with thermal scanners.

Hong Kong assigned a team of scientists to find a quick test for the latest virus to raise global fears of a pandemic, following confirmed human cases of the disease in Mexico, United States and Canada.

More than 100 people in Mexico are believed to have died from the new flu and more than 1,600 sickened, prompting widespread school closures and other measures.

Lucky thing for us we have our border locked down tight!

  1. Mrs. Carlito is sending me to the doctor today, as I’ve had all of the symptoms since returning from Mexico last week. I have been on farms my last 2 trips. Yikes. Interestingly, as of last Friday, Customs and Immigration didn’t even stop me for a search, even though I checked the immigration form box where it said “were you on a farm or in close proximity to livestock.” That seems a bit careless in retrospect.

  2. Fingers crossed that yours is a mild case of whatever it is, carlitos.

And the press is doing it’s usual bang up job of reporting on this.

I don’t include Bradley Fikes in that statement; he works hard to “get it right.”

Seriously, carlitos, I hope you get better soon.

  10. Pat

Still, Americans traveling to Hong Kong and Mexico contracted the disease – additionally, New Zealand and Hong Kong have been battling the disease for months

Yes I agree we need to seal the borders – but this is not an illegal immigration problem – this is a swine flu problem with hog farms skimping on meds cause feed prices rose

  11. I blame ChimpyMcHitlerBurton and Darth Rove for their failure to nationalize Mexico’s healthcare.

    JD (e66bfa)

  12. The fear of a pandemic I think is overblown, and while possible, with adequate health measures it is a low probability issue. Of course we all remember the SAR and ’76 Swine Flu “pandemics” (you know, the feared pandemics that didn’t happen?) that while troublesome, were not of the pandemic level

  13. And I just did a post on the fear mongering here

  16. Perhaps we could restrict travel to Mexico to just drug couriers taking money back, and gun-smugglers?
What does it say about affluence in America that the major outbreak in NY is at a Prep-school that layed-on a Spring-Break trip to Mexico?
Perhaps next year they’ll consider more traditional venues, such as Spring-skiing at Aspen?

    AD (087ff1)

  17. Spring skiing in Park City, UT is better, AD, and less pretentious 😉

Thanks, biomom. I just wish that the Dark Lord and the Smirky ChimpBoy had cared more about the brown-skinned minorities to the South of us. Maybe they would not be in this situation if they had. But, Barcky has no problems with nationalizing institutions. Why not Mexico?

    JD (6ef9a2)

  18. Yes, JD, but you wouldn’t expect Preppies to go to some prol place like Park City and have to mix with Commoners now, would you?
How could their parents hold their heads up at dinner at (insert name of latest trendy NYC dinner spot)?

  36. Yeah, weird that they don’t just eliminate filibusters and strip the GOP of veto power. Guess that’s just not in the cards.

In the end, though, it’s good to know even GOP moderates are too crazy to want to include pandemic funding. Pat Tommey be damned; Specter in ’10

    timb (a83d56)

  37. Timmy, I read your link and as usual you are misreading things. I did like this quote though – nice choice of words, Chuck!!

“All those little porky things that the House put in, the money for the [National] Mall or the sexually transmitted diseases or the flu pandemic, they’re all out,” Schumer said.

As for me, I just have a bad cold and a sinus infection. Which still sucks, but hey, I’m not a statistic!

Great link as usual, Tim – from that bastion of fairness and objectivity, The Nation. True journalistic muckrakers, indeed – what’s next, an article from Katrina Van Duffenhoffer about how everything is really Bush’s fault? Brilliant!

Funniest part is the article’s title – “GOP Know Nothings Fought Pandemic Preparedness.” Gee, I wonder what the “reporter’s” angle is?

    Dmac (1ddf7e)

  44. Dmac – This just goes to show how evil and nefarious Chimpy McHitlerBurton’s Evil Empire was.

Like, say, The Nation? Tim, do you even read your prior posts before inevitably beclowning yourself, or is this some kind of artistic demonstration, like Christo mummifying the Reichstag building in Saran Wrap?

    Dmac (1ddf7e)

  47. Yeah, chris, it is weird they don’t take credit for Republicans demanding things stripped from bills or the bill won’t pass. Man, that is strange

As for dmac, I assume you’re used memeorandum before. If not, you could find out what libtards like Michelle Malkin and Don Surber and Rick Moran and Hot Air and Red State and jimmie in his Sundry Shack and Newsbuster, etc by clicking on their names.

See, you can still read the story without killing the messenger. Why do I imagine if you were walking across the street and Obama told you to watch out for a bus, you’d ignore him…..’cause by golly, you hates you some liberals.

    timb (a83d56)

  48. Yeah, chris, it is weird they don’t take credit for Republicans demanding things stripped from bills or the bill won’t pass. Man, that is strange

Translation: “We Democrats have no spine and cannot stand up to three moderate Republicans. Nothing that goes wrong is our fault. Bush=Hitler!”

    Another Chris (2d8013)

  49. Yeah, chris, it is weird they don’t take credit for Dem. Chuck Schumer demanding things stripped from bills or the bill won’t pass. Man, that is strange.

    Fixed that for you.

    JD (6ef9a2)

  50. We all know that pandemic flu research was the issue that became the tipping point in the negotiations. 5.6 billion dollars in the scope of nearly a trillion dollars was the make or break point, and the evil Republicans drew the line, with Chuck Schumer, on pandemic flu research. This point is beyond laughable, and demonstrates the utter mendacity of the Left quite nicely. Good little footsoldier, timmah, is just following his marching orders.

    JD (6ef9a2)

  51. Where did all of the Tamiflu that the feds are handing out come from?

    Hazy (4e0dda)

  52. This point is beyond laughable, and demonstrates the utter mendacity of the Left quite nicely.

What’s really ridiculous, honestly, isn’t the argument over who approved what money at what time–it’s that people are getting as worked up about this right now as they are. I’d wager a big part of the reason for the outbreak in Mexico is the overall lack of sanitation where the outbreaks are taking place. Even Gibbs was telling reporters today that people could consult the CDC if they had any questions on this, so clearly the Obama administration is not as worked up about this as The Nation.

    Another Chris (2d8013)

  53. That said, this episode is another perfect “If Bush Did This” example for a rapidly growing list.

    Another Chris (2d8013)

  54. See, you can still read the story without killing the messenger

Strike as non – responsive (as usual).

    Dmac (1ddf7e)

  55. Well, one could think that the Duh-1 Administration would want to downplay the seriousness of this if they had some fingerprints that they didn’t want revealed, such as the ripping out of CDC funding from an appropriations bill controlled by Dems – with prominant Dems rejoicing in that spending cut.
But then, Schumer was supporting HRC, and would be due for some political pay-back by the Chi-town crowd, just as Murtha is getting now.

    AD (087ff1)

  56. Next time I’m going to link for Tim a story that’s headlined with something like Feckless Cowardly Dems Defeat Additional Funding for the Women and Men Protecting Our Nation.

    Dmac (1ddf7e)

  57. Unfortunately, given it’s come here to New Zealand (and someone I know has been potentially exposed, thanks to the incompetence of the health officials) your border security isn’t likely to protect you no matter how much you lock it down.

I mean, you can’t get much more secure than NZ, isolated, with most flights coming in through a single airport.

  59. No problem. The Surgeon General, the CDC Director and all the key staff at the CDC are all over this.

More seriously, Janet Napolitano is all out front making statements, so the rank-and-file must not be too worried.

    carlitos (f022c4)

  60. carlitos, your claim is therefore that if the problem was serious, they would not let a twit like Napolitano be the face of the admin?

Well, given the Obama admin’s incompetence with the New York City flyover, I think you overestimate their IQ greatly …

    hehe

    SPQR (72771e)

  66. I’m sure this is racist but when Mexicans crossing the TJ border have a cavalier attitude about taking precautions, I get a bit peeved. From Reuters,

Mexicans take swine flu lightly on U.S. border

Many Mexicans crossing into the United States on Monday at one of the busiest crossings on the border shunned advice to wear surgical face mask to curb the spread of a deadly new flu.

Most Mexican immigration officials at the Tijuana-San Diego crossing were using masks and surgical gloves, but Mexicans crossing by car and foot seemed unconcerned by the influenza scare and only a handful wore masks.

A colleague took her two year old son to the doctor this morning because he was crying, feverish, etc. First thing they did was test him for swine flu. We were in a public school with lots of children whose families come back and forth across the border.

    Dana (d08a3a)

  67. “Lucky thing for us we have our border locked down tight!”

Apparently the right wing fantasy is to prevent even viruses from crossing the border. Jeez.

    imdw (c5488f)

  68. Carlitos, hope you’re not infected with it. Don’t take any government flu vaccine. I recall back in ’76 when they had ‘shots for the masses’ for swine flu about half of the people who got the shot got sick from it.

Of course, on the other hand, every conservative who swore, “I’ll never support Obama until pigs fly!” now can. Swine flu.

  72. DCSCA,

Singapore, Japan, Thailand and Indonesia are using infra-red and thermal technology to scan visitors entering their countries but not the U.S. Instead, U.S. border officials are observing visitors and asking them if they are sick.

    Racist! Like we are surprised.

  74. When reading things like how surveys have detected that even many doctors and nurses in hospitals can be suprisingly lax or sloppy about washing their hands, or knowing the way that janitors at my workplace clean toilets (they use one rag — and one rag only — to wipe the entire toilet, and everything else in the restroom), it’s suprising microbes don’t get passed around more frequently and aggressively.

    Mark (411533)

  75. Anon, I’m sure that you will be challenged on that. After all, your source must be on Cheney’s payroll.

Get it straight: we are the only racist culture on the planet.

More seriously, Hong Kong and the rest of developed Asia is really on the ball about this—after the SARS business.

Even more seriously, why bother with sources? I mean, you can claim that 50% of the folks who got the swine flu vaccine in the mid 70s got sick. It’s not true, but who cares?

    Just post away!

(Actually, thank you for responding to that nonsense).

    Eric Blair (33cc23)

  76. DCSCA is getting more incoherent.

The peculiar syndrome — perhaps some type of mental impairment — where one believes he sees a guy carrying around his infant son, and the father (or, worse, he and his son) is yelling out “fascists!” must be growing more chronic and severe.

    Mark (411533)

  77. “…Don’t take any government flu vaccine….”

Even if it is Obama-approved? I thought government was the answer!

Or maybe you are on the payroll of BigPharma.

So, please continue with your juvenile name calling (which was actually your inability to spell and/or edit) and wishes of illness and death on those who disagree with politically.

You make your fellow travelers look really good.

Oh, and is the local San Diego news article about infrared scanning at the border next to your CNN tape?

  83. #65- They’re now using infrared cameras to spot people with fevers crossing the border and culling them out of the herd as well. Clever.

Local San Diego news ran the story about infrared scanning for fever at border crossing. Probably two guys with a IR camera and a six pack given their budget problems.

A quick Google of “infrared scan swine flu” reveals several hits about Thailand airports using an infrared scan, but none (in the first three pages) on San Diego.

A Google of “infrared scan swine flu San Diego” doesn’t turn up anything about border crossing.

A Google of “infrared scan border crossing” shows some hits about using infrared for detecting border crossings at night in Arizona.

And there’s absolutely nothing in the San Diego Union Tribune website on it.

    http://find.signonsandiego.com/?q=infrared&Submit=Go%21

Not saying you have your facts wrong, just that there’s no evidence of it on the web.

    Steverino (69d941)

  84. Am I the only person here who isn’t very concerned about this?

I mean, Mexico has reported 1600 cases. Yes, that’s a lot. But that’s out of a population of 110 million. So, one in every 6000 people in Mexico have contracted the disease.

In California, with a population of about 35 million, we’ve had 11 cases.

Seriously, I see the need for a little caution. But not to the extent this story have been driven in the papers.

    Steverino (69d941)

  85. Its early to tell, Steverino, but at this stage I’m skeptical of a “pandemic”. Keeping an eye on things is wise.

  87. Steverino, no doubt that the video footage is next to the father-son team shouting “fascist.”

Maybe the television wasn’t plugged in.

Anyway, nothing new there. Just being trollish.

Regarding swine flu, lots of places to look. Here is a good site, written by a genuine epidemiologist.

    http://scienceblogs.com/aetiology/

Also, it is very instructive to look over the Swine Flu scare in the mid-70s. Remember, the one where 50% of the people who took the vaccine got sick (that too is video footage next to the other two clips)? Sheesh.

Sooner or later, we WILL have a pandemic. Can’t tell about this outbreak. Odd that there are deaths in Mexico and none (yet) elsewhere.

    Eric Blair (c8876d)

  88. carlitos, you have to consider the source. A stopped clock is correct twice a day, after all (pre-digital).

I don’t mind humor. I do mind people who are just plain nasty.

    YMMV.

  94. Seriously, Bradley, my guess is that your fellow San Diegan was kicking back watching television and the image from Narita Airport was on screen while someone opined about the Mexican border.

After SARS the asian airports are very serious about this. They don’t get into the PC business as much as we do.

Just think? Try it sometime. What a gift she truly is. The outbreak was during the Ford Administration in 1976, a Republican, of course.

Keep trying, Michelle. Toss up this one, next: when God was a Democrat, before he switched to the GOP, he threw an asteroid at the Earth and wiped out the dinosaurs.

    – video showing father and two – year old son shouting fascist slogans at Tea Party Rally in Chicago

    The list is endless.

  109. Lots of luck with that request, Bradley. I was curious so did some searching, but I don’t see anywhere that the US gov’t has infrared scanning at the border.

It would be nice, and add to the poster’s credibility, if he could actually link to something that butresses his claims. Ever. This one thing is no big deal, but geez, to be a jerk and claim a link would be “doing your work for you” when Steverino and others have done “work” which only proves, once again, he’s making shit up.

  110. Other than the infrared people-detectors in AZ and the like, that is. Nothing to detect people with high fevers.

And why should we judge their actions? Species-ists! After all, the only reason that they are sickening and killing humans is our own crowding and lack of respect for Mother Gaia.

    And resistance to same-sex marriage.

Why, we even cover our coughs, restricting their free migration!

Hey, nickel boy, if you ever substantiate a single claim you make, I will likely die of shock.

  116. carlitos,
To be fair, DCSCA finally linked to a story about Obama funding a new hospital at Camp Pendleton, after days of badgering from me. This was from his stimulus spending, not a “bailout,” as DCSCA originally said. (It’s still wrong, because the “stimulus” is just a euphemism for spending money we don’t have in a drunken binge. Eventually, our Chicom bankers will cut us off.)

Of course, it would be preferable if DCSCA linked to sources without the need for badgering. That’s basic netiquette no matter what one’s political beliefs.

  117. Brother Bradley – It is also basic etiquette to not be a lying douchebag, but ASPCA missed that day in pre-school too.
