I can relate to this because my dad is fighting lung cancer. He was diagnosed a few weeks ago. Unless the Lord does one of His miracles, he may see only one more birthday (in November), and maybe not that.

One of your dad's grandsons (your son?) looks quite a bit like our 3 year old adopted son.

Pat,
I told you the year he died you'd hear his voice. I hope it still comes to you. My dad passed last year and sad to say I can't hear his voice. He was all about supporting his family financially. Thankfully the smell of a cigar can take me back to the few shared memories we have.
I envy you and all the other 'ricos that will hear his voice finish a sentence or answer a question poised in silence.
Also, in the hub-bub that is St. Patrick's Day in Savannah GA, An elderly gent with a green bow tie and two sons toasting his health brought you and your dad to mind.
Erin Go Bragh
and for those who know that I am only Irish By Marriage.
Pogue Ma Hone.
Now draw me another perfect pint.

Patrick, I just re-read the lovely tribute to your father. How wonderful you both knew all along that you were loved by the other. So many go through life not knowing. I just drove 150 miles to surprise my dad and take him to lunch for his 75th birthday. It will go down as one of our best times together. This post reminds me that thankfully I will always have this to treasure and nothing to regret with my own Dad.

I just reread the post you did right after Dad passed...a wonderful reminder of him, but I can't stop crying. I honestly thought I would make it through the day tear free. Ha!

I linked to your post on my blog and am hoping anyone that passes through will read it as well.

Glad you got to wear your bowtie! Maybe you should take a pic of the bowtie and post it so everyone can see.

I tried to post a link to the YouTube video of Chet Atkins singing "I Still Can't Say Goodbye", but it wouldn't go through. I saw Chet sing that song on Austin City Limits years ago. What he said then really hit home with me. "My dad's been gone a long time. I still miss him."
