Quote of the Day

Filed under: Obama, Politics — DRJ @ 11:53 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

Decipher this:

“[A]ppointing Gupta now, although it’s a small thing, is just another example of the lack of accountability that always seems to be the rule when you get things wrong in a socially acceptable way.”

Paul Krugman, explaining why he opposes Obama’s appointment of Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General because Gupta once claimed Michael Moore “fudged his facts” in the film SiCKO.

The linked article also details Congressman John Conyers’ opposition to Gupta.

  1. The left wingers are having buyer’s remorse but nobody could satisfy them. There is some danger in some of his second level appointees like Dawn Johnson at OLC. He may get his moonbats in by the back (non-Senate confirmation) door.,

    Comment by MIke K — 1/10/2009 @ 12:00 am

  2. C’mon. Tack right or left. Is this a horrible pick, or a great pick? Is it idealogical at all? Does anyone really care? Are Dems bad for supporting it, or for opposing it? Symmetrical questions for Repubs. Weren’t the only two significant moments in the history of the surgeon general’s office (1) the pronouncement that cigarettes aren’t healthy, and (2)C. Everett Koop’s interview with Ali Gi?

    Comment by Dave Affeld — 1/10/2009 @ 1:30 am

  3. Pass the popcorn, please. Gupta also supports a “single-payer system”. I suspect that his disagreement with Michael Moore was due to the fact that Gupta is a religious vegan and Moore eats three cows at a sitting.

  7. I read Orwell’s essay in my first quarter in college and have always tried to follow Orwell’s six rules since (except maybe for #vi):

    (i) Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.

(ii) Never use a long word where a short one will do.

(iii) If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.

(iv) Never use the passive where you can use the active.

    (v) Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.

(vi) Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

  9. 2. no, the most important effort by a surgeon general was Clinton’s Jocelyn Elders letting kids be kids by pushing for more masturbation education. Minnie Lee Jones wanted your teenages to be adept at playing with themselves and naturally the evil conservatives were aghast and forced her resignation. At least her boss walked the walk vis a vis absentinence from sexual activity by avoiding his shrewish spouse and playing in a non-sexual matter with a young intern, kneepads and cigars.

Say whatever you want, but Sanjay Gupta is as qualified as the next guy, perhaps more given his TV experience.

Rep. Conyers is just an old crouchy ..

  19. Awww, that nasty Dr. Gupta was mean to Krazy Krugman and John “I Hold Fake Impeachment Hearings In My Parents’ Basement” Conyers’ hero Lord Pork-Pork. It brings a tear to my eye, it does.

Obama is doing rather well in the psychological warfare department–I know nothing about Dr. Gupta except that three of his enemies are scumbags, and yet I’m inclined to like him. Smart of him to throw us a bone like that.

  21. Slightly OT, I don’t exactly remember how it happened, but at Best Buy a year ago I was buying a new laptop and ended up in a long discussion with the young geek salesman that ended with him praising and recommending “Sicko” to me while lecturing about U.S. healthcare. I verbally slapped him down and took my business elsewhere. I was totally frosted. I’ve yet to write a letter of complaint to the BB management but really should. This is worse than being attacked politically by my co-workers in IM and that happens a lot, too.

I have no opinion of Gupta but I also have no respect any longer for the Surgeon General, whoever it is. Mealymouthed nannies. Michael Moore on the other hand can swallow poison and I’ll cheer.

  46. Krugman’s ongoing employment, although it’s a small thing, is just another example of the lack of accountability that always seems to be the rule when you get things wrong in a socially acceptable way.

Pablo, well said! Krugman’s gibberish was a steaming pile of Bovine Excremental Irony. The man is so wrapped up in his own warped worldview, he cant see how he’s mr unaccountable – he’s lied in his column on many occasions. In his world, the Moore’s and the Krugman’s are the valiant fighters for truth, and critics, whether Gupta or (say) Don Luskin, are the philistines boobs. His World is Upside Down.

It’s amazing how apropos this meme is – everywhere – except in the case that Krugman uses it for.

Appointing Leon Pannetta to head the CIA, although it’s a small thing, is just another example of the lack of accountability that always seems to be the rule when you get things wrong in a socially acceptable way.

Expanding SCHIP at a time of trillion-dollar deficits, although it’s a small thing, is just another example of the lack of accountability that always seems to be the rule when you get things wrong in a socially acceptable way.

Voting for Obama, although it’s a small thing, is just another example of the lack of accountability that always seems to be the rule when you get things wrong in a socially acceptable way.

Calling for Israel to cease and desist while saying nothing of Hamas violations of previous agreements, although it’s a small thing, is just another example of the lack of accountability that always seems to be the rule when you get things wrong in a socially acceptable way.

… you can really have fun with that Meme.

  52. Leaving aside the wisdom of the pick, the question that arises from DRJ’s post is whether the NY Times copyeditors are so cowed by Krugman’s Noble Prize that they allow such slopping writing to pass through to the reader. I worked as a writing tutor for a few years and I can assure you that had this been submitted to me I would have circled the sentence that DRJ highlighted, drawn a big question mark in the margin, and returned it to Krugman.

  82. I am definitely not pinhead2008 (I was called biscuithead once when I returned from the Marine Corps). I had just thought I was funny and a play on Clinton’s former surgeon general (who if you remember supported self help so to speak), so I bolded my Krugman comment. Sorry if I was too crude.

I do think Krugman fingers his Nobel medal. And I know he likes to look at himself in the mirror. That is obvious to anyone who has had the misfortune of reading Krugman’s op-eds.

And why would anyone think such a comment was the work of a lefty troll is beyond me.

  88. Well, if you stop reading the NYT and its’ clones, there will be a lot less to wade through.

But, if you keep going to faculty meetings, I might suggest in lieu of boots, a good quality survival suit like those issued to fishermen in the Gulf of Alaska.

  90. Actually, I think Gupta is an inspired choice. He is a good communicator, good doctor, and will keep the position where it should be–about promoting better health for everyone. I do not think Gupta will go off on political tangents that unfortunately we had to deal with during the Clinton administration.

  91. I rather agree with Joe.

At least we’ll remember this one. I don’t even know who Bush has had as Surgeon General…

  92. As for Gupta, any enemy of Michael Moore is a friend of mine.

    Comment by Joe — 1/10/2009 @ 8:38 pm

  93. Why we did not hear from Bush’s surgeon general

You know, some take embryonic stem cell research as killing human beings, others do not. But if you are working for a President who is opposed to it, you are a friggin jerk to buck him on it. It is not a you are right and I am wrong issue, both positions have a point, but the guy in charge gets to set the policy.

If you disagree resign and vote for Kerry and Obama like Richard Clarke and Paul O’Neill did.

    Comment by Joe — 1/10/2009 @ 11:37 pm

  94. #93 Same story as now except Moore’s lapping dogs are launching a preemtive attack to keep Gupta on their reservation… I like how this is playing out because Obama is going to get worn out by MoveOn and Code Pink and the rest.
