Thanks to one of the numerous Dana's who posts here for the suggestion of "nomenklatura" but 4 syllables might be a lot to ask of a declining mass media. I'm still very fond of apparatchik (oops, which I just noticed is also 4 syllables), but there may be a problem. Is it too gender specific? It sounds feminine to me.
