18th Hole, Pebble Beach, August 22, 2008

No, we didn’t play a round. But we had a glass of wine and watched the golfers come in.

  1. Do you never sleep? You must not need more than a few hours a night. I can’t imagine how you do it.

  2. Funny you should mention that. I was just about to head to bed.

I’m cranky a lot. Maybe that explains it.

  3. G’night!

  4. When I hit my drive into the water on the 17th (just past those trees), there was a group of tourists in matching shirts walking by. One of them said – quoting here – “he hit his ball right into the lake!” It’s a happy memory.

  5. So, that would be the 19th hole, not the 18th?

  6. I grew up in Carmel/Pebble Beach and caddied the Pebble Beach course in the days before the adults took over and made it impossible for local kids to make money. That view in the picture is a rare occurrence because the fog socks the place in for much of the year. BTW the mean home price in Pebble Beach is $2.3 million and I doubt that any of the residents are affected by the current downturn. BTW, those rich pricks rarely gave us a big tip, the exception was Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and the rest of Hollywood.

  7. Nice shot of Stillwater Cove. Anyone recall George Scott and the fate of the Mojo?

  8. The last time I played Pebble Beach GC, there was a small group standing at the 18th green, just as in this photo. I sank a 35 foot putt to hole out and got a round of applause from the group. What I didn’t mention was that the putt was NOT for par (or birdie).

That is a great golf course and in the best shape I’ve ever seen it. It used to be kind of scruffy, more than normal for a seaside links course. The present owners, Arnold Palmer and his partners, have done a great job. The Monterrey pines were all dying, though.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to play the last few years so that was my last time, most likely, A good way to remember it.

  9. There’s the Mojo when it got hit by the breaking wave. The photographer saw them getting ready leave, knew what the sea was like and ran out to get in position with his camera for the inevitable scene. He wasn’t disappointed. The damage was $7 million. I was on the Mojo a couple of years ago for a funeral. It does charters out of Newport Beach.

  10. Yep, Mike, that’s the Mojo leaving Morro Bay at a rather odd angle. The local story at MBYC is George Scott chartered it for the Pro/Am at Pebble Beach. Mojo would sure look good riding at anchor in the calm of Stillwater Cove, seen from the clubhouse deck in Patterico’s photo.

However, when the weather turned sour the Morro Bay Harbor Patrol advised Scott not to leave the safety of MB’s safe harbor. You can see the HP’s boat near buoy 3 at the left edge of the picture about half way up. They’re good guys and followed Mojo out to the entrance telling him not to try it, but Scott wouldn’t listen, he was on a schedule. He’d paid big bucks to have a great party boat at his disposal for the golf tournament.

But, the boat was so bashed up it couldn’t even attempt a return to MB, and so had to limp South to Port San Luis to find protection from the heavy seas. Same with Scott, he was too banged up to play golf.

  11. Beautiful pic – Still one of the most breathtaking courses in the golfing world.
