O. J. Simpson Sentenced to 15 Years (Updated x2)

Filed under: Crime — DRJ @ 10:54 am

[Guest post by DRJ]

O. J. Simpson was sentenced today to 15 years in prison by Las Vegas Judge Jackie Glass. Before sentencing, Simpson apologized to the Judge, saying he was confused and “didn’t want to steal anything from anyone.” Judge Glass responded that his actions were “much more than stupidity.”

H/T NK, who notes Simpson would be “eligible for parole in 5 years with no credit for time served … for purposes of parole or good time” according to Fox News. [EDIT: Later in the comments, NK notes that Fox News has revised its story to a minimum of 9 years.]

UPDATE 1: The Las Vegas Review Journal has a record of this morning’s proceedings and notes that Simpson won’t be eligible for parole under Nevada law until he has served at least 9 years. Simpson’s co-defendant C.J. Stewart asked for mercy and sounded remorseful. O.J. — not so much.

UPDATE 2: The sentence was so complex that the Court Clerk issued a statement to clear up the confusion:

“Glass, a no-nonsense judge known for her tough sentences, imposed such a complex series of consecutive and concurrent sentences that even many attorneys watching the case were confused as to how much time Simpson got.

Simpson could serve up to 33 years but could be eligible for parole after nine years, according to Elana Roberto, the judge’s clerk.

The judge said several times that her sentence in the Las Vegas case had nothing to do with Simpson’s 1994 acquittal in the slaying of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. “

  1. Now we will never find out who really killed Nicole Simpson and Ron Goldman…

Okay, the snark factor is high on that comment above.

All I know is that Mr. Goldman must be pleased that his follow up on the civil recoveries prompted O.J. into taking this criminal step. It will never bring his son back, but at least it is partial justice for what happened.

  2. I really appreciated the Judge’s comment that she believed, from the trial testimony, that OJ believed that he could do in LV what would not be allowed elsewhere, and that OJ will now find out that the only thing that stay’s in Vegas, from what happens in Vegas, is OJ!

  3. She was realy sharp — and professional.

Something tells me he won’t see the light of day ever again.

  4. I listened to the sentencing on radio … he got 15 years-to-life on the First Degree Kidnap (with a minimum eligibility parole date of 5 years). Which means he is not eligible for parole – as to that count – until he has served at least 5 years.

The other issue is the additional time he received that was “to be served consecutively” … namely the use of a gun on the above mentioned Kidnap (an additional 12 to 72 months) .. and the two additonal counts of Assault with a weapon that were an additional 18 to 72 months each.

I’m not familiar with Nevada sentencing law, but he could actually be looking at 9 years before he is eligible for parole, not the 5 or 6 mentioned here and in the media.

  6. I’m also hearing different versions of his sentence on news reports. The media seem to be getting this one screwed up.

  7. Can we go out onto the street and scream “Allahu Akbar!” like a deranged banshee like the one dude was seen on camera doing after OJ got acquitted for slaughtering two people?

  9. JD, how dare you accuse the media of the obvious?
Where is your compassion? Your understanding?
    Your blindness?

  10. I’ve updated the post with information from a Las Vegas media report.

  11. I actually feel sorry for this poor sap. He had it made and, like many older athletes, he blew the whole thing with jealousy and drugs and whatever else led him to commit that terrible crime. This is not a guy who was a school dropout and all the rest. In an instant, he went from success and lots of money to the dregs of life. It’s a sad story aside from the harm he caused to the others. My wife was at their wedding. What a sad end for everybody.

    Mike K (531ff4)

  12. OJ sure looked OLD in the sentencing video.

    Kevin Murphy (805c5b)

  13. This was the first time I had a chance to catch red-handed the people who were stealing from my family

I think he means to say “the people who were stealing from the Brown and Goldman families”.

    Scott Jacobs (a1c284)

  14. If events were reversed – with Obama elected before the Simpson murders – would OJ have received the same verdict?

    Vermont Neighbor (5ea336)

  15. Congrations Fred Goldman.

You helped make this happen by hounding O.J. on the civil judgment till he decided to acquire some assets by self help. Oops, that kidnapping and using a gun is not legitmate self help.

It will not bring back Ron, but it must be a bittersweet victory nevertheless.

O.J. will likely fit right in at prison.

    Joe (dcebbd)

  16. By my calculation he will serve a minimum of 9 years and possibly up to 33 years once the consecutive sentences are added together. I don’t know much about the Nevada parole board but I suspect he won’t be paroled the first time he’s eligible. I think he’s pretty much done. Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

    CStudent (635e0b)

  17. O.J. will likely fit right in at prison.

I think they better put him in AdSeg, because what Prison tough guy wouldn’t like to brag that OJ’s his new prison bitch?

Not saying I WANT OJ to be raped in prison, just saying that it is a likely consequence if he’s in GenPop.

    Scott Jacobs (a1c284)

  18. Juice gonna be goin’ da wrong way now.

    Da'Shiznit (089453)

  19. “stealing from my family” translates to “foiling my attempts to evade the Goldman judgment”.

    SPQR (72771e)

  20. OJ is like a virgin Miss Universe in the pen.

    Da'Shiznit (089453)

  21. O.J is sorry
    That he got caught!

    ML (14488c)

  22. Can’t OJ buy protection in jail by signing billions of photos like before, and letting the prisoners sell them to the outside world? He has a highly marketable skill in the pokey, which could keep his tight end safe.

    Vermont Neighbor (5ea336)

  23. like many older athletes, he blew the whole thing with jealousy and drugs and whatever else led him to commit that terrible crime.

We’re all familiar with the retired athlete that gets into debt problems and the usual physical deteriorations, but OJ is another case entirely, Mike. There are hundreds of retired NFL greats who are permanently disabled and have been effectively screwed by their own union, but you don’t hear of them murdering people because of it.

    Dmac (e30284)

  24. This reminds me again of one of my favorite Chris Rock stand – up routines on OJ: “this was all about only one color – green. OJ was famous, that’s the only reason he got off – if he was anyone else, the only thing he’d be known as was “Orenthal the Murdering Bus Driver.”

    Dmac (e30284)

  25. I heard his little speech and I honestly think it did him more harm than good. If I were the judge hearing this I would have been severely tempted to cut him off and blurt out “if one word of what you just said was true, why didn’t you take the witness stand when you had the chance?”

    Sean P (e57269)

  26. OJ probably felt that he could get away with anything (first trial, not paying the families after the civil trial), and was stubborn enough not to cut a deal with the prosecutor in Vegas…now he’s in the hole for 15 years (a long time for someone that’s 61). His arrogance and “Teflon” mentality did him in.

I hope that the families and the victims can rest in peace now knowing that a selfish man is behind bars…and I hope his family can get though to him that his actions brought this upon him.

    fmfnavydoc (47a63f)

  27. First of all, sorry for the wrong h/t. I really did get it, the way I wrote it, from Fox News but since then they revised the article.

Having said that, I think the double overall sentence and consecutive sentencing is trial penalty. I’m no fan of O.J. (to put it mildly) but if there ever was a crime without aggravating circumstances ….

If you’re ever on trial in Las Vegas, put up bail, run away to France, and renounce your U.S. citizenship.

  28. Picture him in an HBO OZ type atmosphere being the squeeze of a Aryan Nation mutant as played by JK Simmons. Add make-up and very short shorts.

He had what, about 15 years to find the real killer on the links and a legion of Nicole look-alikes to service his ego? And a $25k a month NFL pension that couldn’t be touched by the civil judgment with a COLA I asume. Nicole knew he was a sociopath, but Ron was a relative innocent.
Now if there were only real justice for Robert Blake, Phil Spector, Mikey Jackson, Mumia and a host of other vermin.

  29. Picture him in an HBO OZ type atmosphere being the squeeze of a Aryan Nation mutant as played by JK Simmons. Add make-up and very short shorts.

The latest info on the Aryan Nation is that they are a bunch of androgynous _______. Even an old man like O.J. will make them his punks. If he’s inclined that way. He might even get them to grow boobs and let their blond hair grow long.

    nk (5fa892)

  30. I dunno about 15 years. Sure, I think OJ killed Ron and Nicole and, thus, will lose little sleep for him here, but consider:

If some OTHER guy led a group of gun-wielding goons into a hotel room to try to forcibly recover some crap that (he genuinely thought) was his anyway, wouldn’t that other guy probably get, say, 2-3 years?, instead of 15?

Even if this other guy had lost a civil wrongful death suit for a couple of brutal stabbings?

OK, maybe I just talked myself out of it, with that last part.

  31. Swell. Free people are losing their jobs, their homes and missing meals and this jailbird gets a roof, bed, cable TV, laundry service, meals and government healthcare for 9 years, all for free on the taxpayers of Nevada. Guess OJ knows the way to weather a recession/depression.

    DCSCA (d8da01)

  32. OJ just did this to escape the effects of the failed Baracky economic plans.

  33. JD- This is Nero Bush’s mess all the way. The Bush legacy project is to erect statues of W in public parks across America for pigeons to flock to and drop comments on his tenure.

  34. This is really a “how could he have ben so fornicating stupid thing. We al saw him as an NBC sportscaster; the man was well-spoken and knew his subject; it’s not like he was a dummy.

The he flies off the handle and kills two people gets framed for two murders and is darned lucky to escape a false conviction; he knew that he needed to keep his nose clean.

  36. DCSCA – I knew this had to be President Bush’s fault somehow.

I guess I missed where President Bush was erecting statues of himself.

The Bush legacy project is to bust your jaw, prevent critical opinion and kill your freedom of speech. Oh sorry. Wrong president.

  38. I’ve updated the post with more on the term of Simpson’s sentence.

    DRJ (a50047)

  39. So, OJ could theoretically be in jail until he is 94. I am cool with that.

I know but the history of people like Hollywood Henderson is sad. OJ had the best gig aside from Michael Jordan but he was into drugs long before this. My wife saw them snorting cocaine when he and Nicole lived in Laguna. There have been a number of killings, like the basketball player back east a couple of years ago. Somebody, maybe his driver, was killed with a shotgun. Phil Spector is a somewhat similar case.

There were a lot of people living off OJ for years, including the Browns. I just think it’s sad. I feel more for Goldman than the Browns.

    Mike K (2cf494)

  41. O.J. got 9 to 33 years? Ouch, that really Hertz.

    Official Internet Data Office (b89658)

  42. 33-years!
That’s the number I got as the judge read the counts, just couldn’t figure out the concurrant/consecutive with any certitude; but it sounded like several 15-yr concurrants, with at least 3, 6-yr consecutives. I’m sure there was a lot of head scratching in the courthouse until it was clarrified.

  44. The real fun will be next week when the accomplices who sang will be sentenced. I can’t wait to hear the outcry form the community at the disparate justice meted out.

I don’t know if any of y’all were subjected to Geraldo’s race-baiting in the immediate aftermath of the sentencing. He insisted that OJ would have walked if he had an L.A. County jury and would not shut up about the pre-emptory challenges to all four of the black folks in the jury pool.

    What say you, JD?

    Ed (957a32)

  45. Ed – I say good riddance to Orenthal.

    JD (059bab)

  48. DCSCA,

It’s going to be a blast watching you play defense, starting January 20. Almost as fun as watching Intellectual/Media Conservatives preach about “Principles” while taking dumps on their own people.

  49. How will this bring back JonBenet Ramsey and Natalee Holloway? That’s what I want to know.

  50. Mike K.,
I feel sort of like you–the whole thing is so tawdry that I feel so sense of vindication or even pleasure at this.

That little handcuffed wave before they lead him out–awful! Put this man somewhere where we will not be able to see him ever again.

Yeah. There are people like that who dirty everything they touch — even the people who give them their comeuppance. They actually make you sin for wishing them ill.
