New York Times: Secretary of State Clinton

[Guest post by DRJ]

The New York Times reports Hillary Clinton has decided to relinquish her Senate seat and accept the position as Obama’s Secretary of State.

The source(s) are unnamed Clinton confidantes so skepticism is appropriate. However, if this is true, it stuns me that Obama would pass over the chance to choose Hillary as his VP and assure his election while relegating her to a marginal position in his administration, only to hand her the keys to the State Department and significant influence over foreign policy during his transition.

Obama must be feeling overwhelmed and very lonely to do this.

We’re gonna get a lot of miles out of that one, aren’t we…

  3. If the vice president is a loose cannon, you can’t fire him; he’s an elected official in his own right. If the Secretary of State is a problem, the president can can him, at any time.

  4. If the Secretary of State is a problem, the president can can him, at any time.

    Or her, you sexist!

    Denounced!!

    Scott Jacobs (a1c284)

  5. Besides, foreign policy is going to be made in the White House, not the State Department. Mrs Clinton will be required to carry out her master’s Mr Obama’s instructions, and he will be very pleased with that! 🙂

    The unworried Dana (3e4784)

  6. This is really a bizarre move. After working hard at fending off the Clinton family in the primary, now he’s turning over the entire administration to Clinton’s or their corrupted lapdogs.

    SPQR (72771e)

  7. Well, to the best that can be determined, he’s never really had any friends (none at Harvard, none at Columbia . . . Ayers is just “some guy in the neighborhood”), so is it any wonder that he has no friends now, and has to rely on a group almost entirely comprised of insiders?

    Icy Truth (aedb2f)

  8. Dana,

The President can assign the VP to attend every foreign funeral and meet with politically unimportant lobbyists, businesspeople, and local politicians. And the VP has to act like s/he likes it. Marginalization like that is worse than being fired.

But I agree I’m not worried about this. Policy may be made in the White House but day-to-day operations will be run by State and those operations can dramatically influence the success or failure of overall policy. I’d much rather have Hillary “making” foreign policy than Obama. It’s her domestic policies I don’t like.

  9. Let’s look at the order of succession to the Presidency:

    Joe Biden
    Nancy Pelosi
Harry Reid (or whoever the President Pro Tem of the Senate is)
    Hillary Clinton

God help us if Obama can’t serve out his term.

Who better to represent the new American paradigm to the world than Hillary Clinton? The terraforming of America by the leftists has begun, we will be remade into the more acceptable likeness of Western Europe. The long suffering, liberal turmoil is at an end. America can at last take it’s place at the adult table beside the other more progressive socialist leader nations of the West. ‘Tis a consummation Devoutly to be wished.

  26. Remember the final scene of the 1972 movie The Candidate? After having had his hand held and words put into his mouth at every turn in order to win a California Senate election, Bill McKay (Robert Redford) and his aides retire to his hotel room following his victory speech. His campaign manager is leaving his room, and McKay stops him, asking, “What do we do now?”

There are more than a few self-identified Dems who are asking if B.O. is the real-life Bill McKay.

Ironically, Redford, who played the fictional version, doesn’t recognize the real thing when he sees it.

    L.N. Smithee (e1f2bf)

  27. The scary thing is that Redford probably DOES recognize the real thing — but he doesn’t care because the guy is on his side of the political aisle.

  28. Its not a horrible choice, but I still think by far Bill Richardson is the best candidate for this job. He has relationships and familiarity with people in Iraq and North Korea already, he has negotiated with the Taliban. Placing him in an office other that foreign affairs may be a mistake.

  30. The third term of the Bush adminstration is well under way! You have to wonder what all the people who’ve been screeching about Bushitlers war crimes are thinking now that Obama is staffing his cabinet with war supporters.

    Subotai (8f654b)

  31. Is “naivety” similar to “eleventy”?

What better way to prevent her from making trouble, either in the Senate or within the country at-large, than to officially kick her out for 4 years?

    Icy Truth (aedb2f)

  32. It is good to have Hillary (read Bill) around between them and the cabal Pelosi-Reid, are soing to be the ones governing the country, anyhow. Here for the first time in our history what we are seeing is a “junta” government. Good scheme Democratas ! What we see it is not what it happening.

    Cmillus (825944)

  33. The more I think about this, the more perplexed I am. One of Hillary’s weak spots in this election was her foreign policy credentials. By making her Secretary of State, Obama is giving her gravitas on foreign affairs that she can use in 4 years to contest him if things don’t go well in his first term.

Is that the new line from the left? You people have been in hysterics about the “illegal Iraq war” for many years now. But the latest pivot is that the war itself was fine, you just wanted better people running it?

  44. We are facing the most powerful far left leaning government in the history of our nation? We are talking about an unrestrained, extreme liberal, completely unchecked, House of Representatives, Senate and Executive branch. You will see (fairness) that word that president elect Obama is so found of using; will disappear from the American Lexicon.

Here is something you can be certain of. In the first year of the Obama presidency, you will see the most radical change to the American culture and landscape that you could possibly imagine. The democrats, while they have power consolidated, will have to work quickly to make all of their socialists dreams come true, before the American public wakes up and recognizes the horrible mistake they have made, return to sanity, and can vote for balance in the next elections. I will be shocked if President Obama has not named at least two appointees to the Supreme Court. Justices that will be as activist and liberal, as can be found, anywhere in the Land of the Moon-bats. Judges that will be utterly dedicated to terraforming our culture into a Secular Humanist utopia. So devoid of all moral absolutes will America be, that the Huxley family, en masse, will immediately immigrate to America and apply for citizenship.

Good point, DRJ. But don’t you think that accepting that post will destroy whatever is left of Hillary Clinton’s political ambitions? If she fails she will take the blame and won’t be able to run against him. If she succeeds, he takes the credit for picking her. The way I see it, accepting this position gives us insight on whether Hillary wants to run again. If she takes it, she is ceding her 2012 ambition. Just my opinion.

But don’t you think that accepting that post will destroy whatever is left of Hillary Clinton’s political ambitions?

I disagree. I think this proves Hillary wants to be a player and isn’t willing to retire gracefully to the Senate. Further, this gives her a position where she can’t fail. Like Colin Powell during the first Bush term, she can take credit for the positive outcomes and when things don’t go well, she can blame it on Obama’s policies and leak that she counseled against those policies.

Finally, thanks to Obama’s staff choices, she has a network of sources that will keep her abreast of all the inside information so she can avoid the pitfalls. It’s a win-win for Hillary.

    DRJ (a50047)

Do you really think Hillary is still interested in running for president? Don’t think so. If she really wants to, she will best stay away from any cabinet position in Obama’s admin. and remain in the senate. I don’t see how being Obama’s Condi helps her.

    love2008 (1b037c)

It was a better time for MOST (especially the middle class). How has it been since BUSH has been in office? NOT GOOD!! While Bill was in office–Hillary was by his side. The economy and the U.S. were better with both in office (and I personally feel Hillary made a lot of major decisions as 1st lady) but that’s only my opinion! It seems to not matter whose in office–there will always NAYSAYERS. Rather than downing individuals–shouldn’t we be lookin at the big picture–Whats Best for our Country? Would we rather have 4 more years of the BUSH ERA or try CHANGE? I personally don’t think we can go wrong with the OBAMA/CLINTON administration regardless of how it comes. Its got to better!! 58. You fail to remember the shape that the economy and the U.S. was in when Bill got into office and the shape of the economy when he left.

I remember. The economy was in its 8th consecutive quarter of expansion when Clinton took office. It was teetering into a recession when he left, with 2000Q3 showing a shrinking GDP.

    Steverino (db5760)

  59. But how does that compare to the 8th consecutive Quarter prior to him taking office.?

Very interesting point that begs the question what has changed? From a woman’s perspective, what has changed is that Michelle is no longer pissed at Hillary. Hillary was, by all counts, respectful and helpful to Michelle with advice on raising the girls in the White House. Michelle is no longer ticked off so Hillary gets a powerful role.

  62. But how does that compare to the 8th consecutive Quarter prior to him taking office.?

The economy was already growing well before Clinton was even elected. Crediting him with the expansion is like blaming the Johnstown flood on a leaky faucet in Altoona.

The US economy has periods of growth and recession: it’s cyclical. The President, no matter what party, doesn’t have as much control over the economy as you seem to think.

    Steverino (db5760)

  63. Just wait until Hillary starts undermining Baracky from the State Department.

I think cheese (especially the Italian’s Asiago)is like nectar from the gods in dairy form.

No, the Nectar of the Gods is Mountain Dew.®

4,000 years ago, the gods on Mount Olympus decided that they needed something to wash down the Food of the Gods, which is, as we all know, sushi. Ἥφαιστος provided beer, and Διόνυσος provided wine, and both of these worked well, but the gods kept waking up with these horrible hangovers.

So Ζεύς, the King of the Gods, assigned to his daughter Ἀθηνᾶ, the Goddess of Wisdom, the noble task of producing a non-alcoholic drink for the gods. She labored for 476 years, and finally produced the Nectar of the Gods, sometimes called ambrosia. The gods agreed that this drink was truly divine, and that it was far, far too good for mortal men, so they kept the secret with them on Mount Olympus.

    Until . . .

One day in 1942, when Zeus was visiting a mortal maiden in Knoxville, Tennessee, he heard the stomp of footsteps coming up the stairs. Zeus transformed himself into a golden swan and flew out the window, but he left his blue jeans on the no longer maidenly young woman’s bedroom floor.

And in the pocket of his blue jeans was the recipe for Ambrosia.

Well, the enterprising father of the no longer maidenly young woman (who, fortunately, had taken Greek in high school) recognized this recipe for what it surely was, decided to share this wonderful drink — and make some money in the process — and since that day, we have had Mountain Dew here on earth.

  93. #73:

Was the leisure suit any more “fashionable” for all its popularity?

Madison, Monroe, J.Q. Adams were all SecStates before becoming President. Until the Civil War, it was the recognized path to power to be appointed to State, a decision most presidents made first before others. The 1828 election even turned on what was perceived as the corrupt bargain of ’24, where Adams offered Stete to henry Clay, one of his rivals in the race, to edge out Andrew Jackson. Jackson voewed revenge on both men whom he despised for the rest of his days.

And, after all, State is #4 in the chain of presidential command, which now broadly boasts two women.

    Baltimoron (649068)

  94. No, it’s called the order of presidential succession, and it has already had two women in it for almost two years now. (Duh!)

  95. #75:

Thanks for reminding me. Five woman are currently in the order of succession.

I guess quotas have come to the US Cabinet.

    Baltimoron (649068)

  96. I meant #95, not #75

    Baltimoron (649068)

  97. Baltimoron: Quotae have come to the cabinet, courtesy of William Jefferson Clinton, who penciled in that a woman would be Attorney General, and he had to go through three of them before one could get confirmed.

I don’t know if Madeline Albright could be considered an Affirmative Action hire, but Condoleezza Rice certainly came up the ladder the hard, slow way.

    Cuisine Revisionist!

    (Mountain Dew???…oh, wait, I get it…I forgot you’re a bitter clinger from PA…now it all makes sense…)

    Dana (594bf4)

  99. Revisionist? Revisionist!? Nay, ’tis true, every word of it.

And you know that it’s true, because ’twas addressed to you, and, as I have told my darling bride many times, men never lie to women.

  100. Dana,

Just wanted to mention that I enjoy your descriptive names.

    DRJ (a50047)

  101. Deceptive? How are they deceptive? They are completely honest in all respects, and at all times.

    The extremely handsome Dana (556f76)

  102. Oh, wait, you said descriptive,</i. didn’t you? Well, they’re that, too. 🙂

  104. I enjoy all of the Dana’s.

    JD (5f0e11)

  105. Well thank you, JD. I, too, enjoy the Revisionist Dana but certainly hope that he soon accepts the cold blunt truth: if the best non-alcoholic drink Ἀθηνᾶ, the Goddess of Wisdom could come up with is – gag – Mt. Dew, then quite obviously she was no Goddess…and considering that just this week Mt. Dew’s parent company’s stock got neatly downgraded, well, Goddess my tush!

  106. Dear non-adjectived Dana: Mountain Dew, that gift from the gods, contains both sugar and caffeine, two of the four main food groups — the other two being salt and cholesterol — and is thus an impostant part of a balanced diet.

I’m surprised your didn’t know that!
