Hillary Accepts?

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 12:07 am

The Guardian says Hillary has accepted the Secretary of State post:

Hillary Clinton plans to accept the job of secretary of state offered by Barack Obama, who is reaching out to former rivals to build a broad coalition administration, the Guardian has learned…

The only thing is, as Allahpundit notes, nobody on this side of the pond seems to be reporting it yet. A bit odd, that . . .

  1. Hillary voted for the Iraq war. Why would Obama want the Hero of Tuzla in his administration?

  2. Why would Hillary want to give up her power in the Senate?

So she can be Obama’s bitch in his failed administration? His first foreign policy ideas are to lie to Poland about missile defense and to suggest forcing the Arab “peace” plan on Israel.

And she’ll be blamed for Iraq/Afghanistan, no matter what happens there. Obama’s teflon means that Hillary would take the blame for ANYTHING bad.

  3. If she’s offered the job, I don’t see how she could possibly turn it down. It would be an open declaration of war on Obama, and she’s not ready for that. But accepting would mean she can’t wage covert war on Obama either, unless it’s very covert indeed. As a member of his administration she can’t be undermining him, she’s tarred by any screwups the administration makes, and she can’t start her 2012 campaign until she manufactures some excuse to openly break with him and resign. Not knowing exactly what form his mistakes will take, or when they will come, she has to be ready, and yet she can’t be openly against him until the gold foil has started wearing off his halo. So she’s got no good options, which makes it a brilliant move for Obama.

  4. I thought publishing leaks and state secrets was explicitly the New York Times’ responsibility. Has the new business started eating its own? Does the Guardian have no sense of decorum?

  5. I don’t know why the source of this leak is all that surprising – after all, it was a Brit paper that broke the story about Obama’s half – brother. The only news outlets that thought it necessary to do any vetting of the President – elect just happened to be based overseas.

  6. What do you mean by “no one on this side of the pond”? Malkin reported on it:

  8. The U.S. media are still Obama’s public relations department. They say what he tells them to say. (Let’s see how long their natural instinct to undermine every American President will be held in abeyance in his case, though.)

  9. This is Obama’s way of kneecapping the Clintons. He’s already gathering about him old members of the Clinton apparatus and with Hillary as his SecState, she is obligated to carry out his policy and cannot publically oppose him at any time (which she may have been able to pull off as a Senator). Billy Jeff will have to shut up too and either cheerlead The One’s policies or just do the former President thing of being solely involved in non-political, charitable causes. I doubt Billy Jeff wants to go the unethical Jhimmi Carter route.

  10. Didn’t the O! illegal alien auntie in Beantown sucking on the Public Housing teat also emanate from abroad? The left was up in arms over alleged GOP dirty tricks as Bush ordered ICE to forego any potential deportations as a courtesy to Obama. No complaints about dirty, rotten bastard airhead america maroon stuart smiley still trying to steal the Minn. election though.

Leaks and state secrets or even an agencies own rules? Did not the CIA give expressed blessings to the publication of anti-Bush books authored by disloyal drones within the CIA? Amazing how so-caled journalists can twist themselves into pretzels making up shit about Bush/McCain/Palin but protect against revealing facts about the likes of Obama, Biden, Lurch, the Silk Pony, et al?

  11. Can Obama handle Hillary? Or, can Hillary be submissive and loyal to Obama as her boss? Can she be Obama’s Condi?

  12. No. No. And no.

  13. Much of the context for these culture wars is generational. As you may have noticed, many influential experts have been saying recently that Obama is part of Generation Jones, born 1954-1965, between the Boomers and Generation X. If Obama’s generational identity, and the culture wars, are of interest to you, you should definitely click this link…it goes to a page filled with lots of articles and videos of famous people discussing Obama’s identity as a GenJoneser, and the importance of this to his Presidency: http://www.generationjones.com/2008election.html

  14. Reportedly, the source of the leak was Hillary to force his hand once he had discussed the job with her. I would rather have her there than on the Supreme Court, which was the rumor last spring.

Someone made a quip that they would not want to be in the chain of succession between Hillary and the Presidency. That means that Biden, Byrd and Pelosi have hired food tasters. Obama already had one.

  15. I say it would be good because it shows Obama’s weakness and limits his power, Hillary has a mind and power base of her own. At least it would show that his ambition is limited, much to my surprise. I wonder if that was the cost of her reluctant endorsement.

My 19-year-old daughter says it would be bad because Hillary is no diplomat.

    Maybe we are both right.

  16. It will provide another — if she doesn’t muck it up — accomplishment on her resume if she wants to run again. I say: ANYTHING other than a Supreme Court nomination feels like a win for our side.

  17. Don’t put ANY faith in the Guardian (famous for misspelling their own name on their masthead as “GRAUNIAD”; no foolin’!)

True – but Condi proved that she wasn’t up to job in most regards.

  19. Sorry Patterico,

I tried to read Allahpundit’s article at Hotair which you linked, but I couldn’t get passed his reference to Obama as “The One”.

I refuse to comment on a post that is relying on silly references to President Elect Obama as being some sort of a messiah.

I know, I know, you all could care less about what I give a damn about, but thanks for reading this far anyways.

  20. Put me in the camp of those who wonder why she is even considering it. First, she gives up about as close as it comes to a lifetime appointment outside the judiciary or papacy as a Senator from NY, where she is in a position of power well beyond her seniority or accomplishments simply because she is who she is.

Second, it hasn’t been the springboard to Presidency that it used to be in the early days when it was the most common feeder route, ask all the SoS’s since James Freakin’ Buchanan.

Third, SoS is usually a pretty short ride, first term plus a little bit into the second (if there is one) is pretty much the most optimistic expected shelf life. In the last 50 years or so with only a couple of exceptions like Rusk or Schultz, it’s several years at best and almost never a real two-term position.

Finally, SoS is more likely to damage your reputation instead of enhancing it. Ask Powell how that works.

I love this sudden sense of decorum from the people who spent the last several years raging against Chimpy McHitlerburton, the President In Thief. Now that their guys are running the show nothing like that is be tolerated.

  23. Stay tuned to this one for more future drama….Hillary has to have some kind of ulterior motives for taking this post, and Obama and his leftist illuminati cabinet will be watching her like a hawk. Something’s gotta give between these two.
