Game 5 of the World Series (Updated)

Filed under: Sports — DRJ @ 2:15 pm

[Guest post by DRJ]

Game 5 of the World Series will continue tonight with the Phillies leading the Rays 3-1. A Phillie win would end the Series but if the Rays win, then Game 6 will be Thursday night in Florida.

Any thoughts, predictions, or favorites among the folks here at Patterico’s?

UPDATE: The Phillies win. Congratulations to all Philllies’ fans.

  7. Lifelong Phillies fan here.

I’m going for the win tonight since the Phillies wining the World Series would be the seventh sign of the Apocalypse and we wouldn’t have to worry about the election.

Well, *I* would – being as I’d be Left Behind and all.

  8. I think the “Messiah” will win…….. oh you mean the World Series? Sorry thought you were still on politics.

    Go Phills!

The Cubs winning the World Series is the seventh sign of the Apocalypse.

The sixth sign is snuffles making sense.

  11. It’s difficult for me to get revved for this year’s Series. As a lifelong Giants fan, I’m just happy that it wasn’t a Series between the two teams I hate the most, The Los Angeles Angels and the Los Angeles Dodgers. That would have been almost as bad as watching this election.

I’d like to see the underdog Rays win it all, but that would be a bitter pill to swallow because that would mean three out of the four newest teams in MLB have won the World Championship before my Giants have won one since moving west from New York in 1958 (Diamondbacks, Marlins (twice!), and Rays).

Since the Red and White Sox have each won in the past four seasons after decades of WS droughts, the Giants are third on the futility list behind the Indians (who last won in 1948) and, of course the Cubbies (1908).

One thing I will guarantee: There will be whining about how low the ratings are. Sorry, TV bigwigs and petulant sportswriters; unlike the BCS, this is a fair competition.

  12. Sorry, guys, but you all have to root for the Phillies.
The last time the Phillies were in the Series in a presidential election year, they won their only World Series and we got Ronald Reagan as president.
That combination is too good to dismiss.

I’m impressed that you can count that high!

  14. Bob, that’s a depressing thought, because the Phillies know how to choke!

Of course, I’m still a Cincinnati Reds fan, and they haven’t been good in decades!

  15. Mr Smithee: That’s what the Giants deserve for moving to San Francisco!

  17. I said at the start of the year that I thought the Rays would win 92 games and had a shot to win the whole shooting match. OTOH, I went to undergrad in Philly, and mi amigos are Phillie fans.

I’ll bet that the Rays hold off the Phillies here. After that, who knows?

  18. HA!

Poor suffering fans from other cities.

The Phillies have won ONE World Series in their long and storied yet futile history.

Philly the city is a combined 100 years since the last major sport (baseball, football, hockey and basketball)

    Spare me your whining. :>)

I am so disappointed in you two.

I was quite concerned when I first realized during the season that the Cubbies had the best record in Baseball. The fact that they even made it into the playoffs proves we are in extraordinary times.
I have not been a die-hard Philly fan since I’m a transplanted Midwesterner (I cheered Paul Molitor and Toronto in ’93), but it is a line-up of players that generally you’d like your sons to emulate. (Philly fans, though, are another matter).
I understand the desire not to let the Series be determined by an incomplete game, but it sure seemed that the weather made the game unplayable after 4 1/2 innings (enough to declare a complete game, I believe) and before the game was suspended after the Rays scored to tie the game. It seemed they were hoping the Rays would get a run so they wouldn’t have to let the Phillies win in a shortened game. But, in baseball rules are rules, that’s why Selig resorted to reading from the rulebook.

I hope the Phillies win tonight so we can get back to going to bed on time.

  22. As a long suffering Rays fan, I am of course rooting for the Rays to win this game and send the series back to St. Pete. I was at Game 7 of the ALCS and what an experience! Beating the Red Sox was so sweet after choking away Game 5.
Things don’t look up right now but the Rays have been resilient all year.
    GO RAYS!!!!!!!!!!

Have the Phillies stolen a run from the Rays?

  26. This is a very hurtful and heartless thread. I am very surprised that DRJ, who is a very kind, sensible, intelligent and sensitive person, would put up such a post.

  27. You mean you wish I’d posted on oral surgery?

    DRJ (cb68f2)

  28. I’ve updated the post to show the Phillies won. Due to the 2-day rain delay, this was the longest game in World Series history.

    DRJ (cb68f2)

  29. I think I felt the earth slow down its spinning for a moment in response to this event. Even Mother Gaia figures the Pillies would find a way to lose this one. I was counting on the Mitch Williams strategery.

    JD (5b4781)

  30. You need to remember not only Joe Carter’s HR off of the “Wild Thing”, but that Paul Molitor batted .500 or so and won the series MVP. The Rays had no such fire power in this series. (Sorry FLBuckeye).

  31. Congrats Doc, and to all the other Phillie fans, on this World Serious victory.

  32. To the Phillies fans on here, congrats. It is fun, isn’t it?

Now, the group of teams that can be mentioned in the same breath as the Cubs has shrunk, yet again.

    JD (5b4781)

  33. The performance of the Chi-Cubs in post-season play leaves one absolutely breathless.

You laugh for five minutes, and you’ll be breathless too.

  34. AD – 5 minutes? I have been laughing since Man Ram completed the sweep !

  35. Congrats to the Phillies fans, and condolences to the Ray’s…but I’m one of those guys who when somebody says they saw a no-hitter, my reply is “And you watched that?!?”

  36. Some of you Phillies phans should describe this feeling for some of the Cubs fans, so if nothing else, they can say that they were able to experience the joy of winning The Series, if only vicariously.

    JD (5b4781)

  37. I hate October!

Two reasons, because I usually gain another year of birth record and the greatest baseball of the year is played!

Actually I love October baseball, and have gotten used to the birthday thing. October baseball is akin to late season college football, amazing does not even begin to describe the purity of the games!

I did desire to see the Ray’s take it, but such was only because they have NEVER been to big show of the big shows. But it seemed they indeed were outgunned and that play by Utley was outstanding! The phills has their stuff together and took it to the Rays.

Got a kick out of the sports casters, they actually thought the game lasted 46 hours! I guess they forgot since they spent 40 of those hours at some nearby pub! Time flies when yer having fun eh?

A hearty congrats to the Phills and their fans! Well done.

  38. So ended the longest World Series game in history – it took days to determine a winner.

    Way to Go Philly!

Now – everyone – while you are thinking about the City of Brotherly Love – don’t forget to catch the Mummers Parade on Jan 1.
