Journalist Admits Bias

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 10:17 pm

Michael Malone, a columnist at ABC News, writes:

The traditional media are playing a very, very dangerous game — with their readers, with the Constitution and with their own fates.

The sheer bias in the print and television coverage of this election campaign is not just bewildering, but appalling. And over the last few months I’ve found myself slowly moving from shaking my head at the obvious one-sided reporting, to actually shouting at the screen of my television and my laptop computer.

But worst of all, for the last couple weeks, I’ve begun — for the first time in my adult life — to be embarrassed to admit what I do for a living. A few days ago, when asked by a new acquaintance what I did for a living, I replied that I was “a writer,” because I couldn’t bring myself to admit to a stranger that I’m a journalist.

It gets better:

Republicans are justifiably foaming at the mouth over the sheer one-sidedness of the press coverage of the two candidates and their running mates. . . . . If the current polls are correct, we are about to elect as president of the United States a man who is essentially a cipher, who has left almost no paper trail, seems to have few friends (that at least will talk) and has entire years missing out of his biography.

. . . .

Why, for example to quote the lawyer for Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., haven’t we seen an interview with Sen. Obama’s grad school drug dealer — when we know all about Mrs. McCain’s addiction? Are Bill Ayers and Tony Rezko that hard to interview? All those phony voter registrations that hard to scrutinize? And why are Sen. Biden’s endless gaffes almost always covered up, or rationalized, by the traditional media?

Read it all.

Thanks to Mark.

  1. Oh, Patterico! Here is a story from Gateway Pundit which could immediately decide the election against Obama: Confirmed: MSM Holds Video Of Barack Obama Attending Jew-Bash & Toasting a Former PLO Operative…Refuse to Release the Video!

And the media outlet who won’t release it is the Los Angeles Times!

And Ayers and Dohrn were at the party, too!

A truer title I’ve never seen.

ABC seems to be to the right of Fox News these days.

  3. The LA Times should be barraged until they release that tape!
Obama yucking it up with Rashid and Bernadine might very well change some minds, and it is not their right to play Election Fairy.

  4. If and when Obama wins this election, it will be more an indictment of American culture than of Obama himself. The shallowness and gullibility of the American people has reached an all time high. Lets all be sheep and let the media lead us around by our noses. Lets make two sets of rules for vetting and critiquing candidates. Lets vote for the guy who looks better in a $1,500 suit. Who cares about character or historical record? I think Bush is a clown and I’m not a huge fan of McCain but Obama is a phony and a fraud on every level. I live in Chicago. We have the highest murder rate and the worst schools in the country but somehow this guy is gonna straighten out the nation?

  5. Why wouldn’t the LA Times continue to stonewall?

They are fine covering for a Breck Girl or Obama/Biden and happy to report on Palin’s $150k wardrobe (I suppose Obama’s $5.3 million phony Greek Temple at Invesco Field was an unimportant detail).

LA Times writer Peter Wallsten has already said he won’t release the video or reveal its sources.
Just not imprtant that O gave a testimonial at a soiree bashing Jews and toasting a PLO operative. Btw, our friends Ayers and Dohrn were also there.
What say you, Obama adulators? GOP is getting ever more desperate? Why not let the voters see for themselves? And my Jewish friends here are really willfully blind to buy Wexler’s Obama praises.
Perhaps some of you will write and offer criticism of the holding back of pertinent video (or support if you’re Phil, Peter, Tokyo Rose and various other trolls and Mobys).

  16. T+J, there’s nothing wrong with Dan Quayle. Media Spin, much like Barry is getting. Only negative.

You may not like Palin but her accomplishments are on record. As far as reform, Obama turned the other way, ingratiated himself with the wrong side of the party. Pure power play. Palin actually fought for justice and reform and accomplished what she set out to do.

In fact, if you look at one side of a penny. . . .

    Vermont Neighbor (c91cfe)

  17. I have seen the light, guys. I want to help. What should I do? When I talk to my friends I have to get it right. Obama is a terrorist who hates America and wants to bring communism, I get that part. What else? I want to learn more. I don’t want to be just right-center, I want to be completely nutso like most of you. Is it too late to accuse Baracky of conspiring with Osama to plan 9/11? Can we accuse the MSM of bias against Palin even when she says ridiculously dumb things and doesn’t know what the VP actually does (still)? What is our answer to that? I know what Another Drew does (calls the poster a liar or otherwise insults him/her), but I don’t want people to assume I am crazy and uneducated, you know?

I know it will be a little painful at first when my friends roll their eyes and talk about me when I leave the room, but I’m sure you all can give me pointers on how to cope.

    truthnjustice (c313be)

  18. I agree. Palin fought oil companies by taxing them so she can send a check out to all Alaskans. Sounds like pure capitalism to me.

Is she still mentioning that bridge to nowhere? She cancelled that project after congress did. How are we going to respond to that? Media bias? Call them liars (drew, I got your back)? I am sure there is some crazy newspaper writer out there somewhere that made some crap up about how Palin was in the right about all this stuff (including troopergate) so I guess we can find those articles and cite them.

  22. The traditional media are playing a very, very dangerous game — with their readers, with the Constitution and with their own fates.
    .
Propaganda is constitutional. So is lying on a massive scale. That the media has some obligation to present “objective truth” or else the republic will fall, is a foundational LIE with the purpose of legitimizing the media as an institution. This joker is helping lay this foundational LIE.
    .
Each media organ should be presumed to be propagandist. The Constitution can be fairly construed as implying that the press is free to lie and it’s up to the public to find truth, in spite of being surrounded by an immersed in messages that amount to advertising.
    .
“Freedom of the press” isn’t “Freedom to tell the truth.” That would an asinine interpretation. “Freedom of the press” is “freedom to lie, without fear of legal recourse.”

    cboldt (3d73dd)

  23. While we are talking about media bias, I think this will be a very interesting and educational exercise for you.

    Go to Google.
Type in ‘media bias against Palin’.
Look at the first hit that pops up, for me it was “LexisNexis study finds no media bias against Palin, GOP”.

Considering I typed in a search that should have brought some sort of positive result for media bias, I think that hit is very telling. I recommend you all read it and send me a quick summary of what you learned. Can I expect you guys out canvassing your neighborhoods for Obama (yeah, I switched back a few minutes ago) now that you know Palin is not just the victim of bias and really is a bumbling fool?

    truthnjustice (c313be)

  24. I have seen the light, guys. I want to help. What should I do?
    .
For starters, post your insights and illuminations elsewhere. All you are here is a punching bag.

    cboldt (3d73dd)

  25. Too late, cboldt. I have switched back. I couldn’t even pretend that McCain/Palin was a good choice for more than 2 minutes.

    truthnjustice (c313be)

  26. Too late, cboldt. I have switched back.
    .
I didn’t expect you to stop posting here either. It’s obvious that your “I want to help,” was, like the other material you post, insincere. You’re just another dull and useless troll.

    cboldt (3d73dd)

  27. If there weren’t anybody countering your ridiculous arguments life would be boring. The idea that the media is somehow conspiring against your candidate is a grandiose dillusion.

    truthnjustice (c313be)

  28. Not sure if it’ll show up, but this is what I tried to put in abc news comments.
    .

What’s needed in this county is “Reading 101.” The public is foolish to believe what the media prints, including Mr. Malone’s self-serving public confession. Media Is propaganda, and each reader should be as alert as to what he or she reads in print, as one is alert when responding to a carnival barker. Invest only what you don’t mind losing. “Freedom of the press” isn’t necessary in order to protect telling the truth. Telling the truth is inherently self-protecting. What freedom of the press protects (and encourages) is a freedom to distort and lie with no legal ramifications.

    cboldt (3d73dd)

  29. Nobody wants to comment on the LexisNexis article? Well, then I will summarize:

26% of the articles were positive
22% of the articles were negative
52% of the articles were neutral

Weird. No media bias here. But, one dipstick (Michael Malone) and his anecdotal evidence surely beats out a comprehensive search, mostly because that one anecdotal story confirms what you all have already built up in your minds to be the infallible truth.

    truthnjustice (c313be)

  30. “…like the other material you post, insincere…”

Insincere, adj. not sincere; not honest in the expression of actual feeling…

    In other words: A LIE!

    Another Drew (2ba239)

  31. The idea that the media is somehow conspiring against your candidate is a grandiose dillusion.
    .
Part of the predictable (and therefore dull) nature of a troll is the inclination to make accusations out of thin air. “Bias” is not “conspiracy,” you dumb-azz.
    .
Hillary Clinton is another dull troll who imagines conspiracy where none exists. The vast right-wing conspiracy.

    cboldt (3d73dd)

  32. I will go one step further. Given the results of their search, if one were to label the media bias shown with respect to Palin he would have to label it positive. There goes that claim.

    truthnjustice (c313be)

  33. Hahahaha! You keep falling into the same trap, over and over again Drew. You are absolutely priceless. Can I rent you out for parties and get-togethers? I am sure you’re booked up for Halloween already, but maybe around the Christmas season?

  34. The man with the real power at the Los Angeles Times is the owner, Sam Zell. That’s who to contact about this coverup, I believe, more than anyone else.

Zell is relatively outspoken, and seems to like the media spotlight. He’s fired hundreds of Los Angeles Times staffers, and seemed to enjoy doing it. Not that they didn’t deserve it, of course.

Obama officials said it should be obvious that it is as much in their campaign’s interest as it is in the public’s interest for fake contributions to be turned back, and said they have taken pains to establish a barrier to prevent them.

As discussed here the security standards had to be manually removed by Obama’s campaign, so they are flat-out lying yet again.

So truth and justice is here to change the dialogue. Subvert the topic. Squash the story.

Obama is favored by the media. You know it, so get with the truth. E&P is a left-leaner anyway, so quoting that, and a dated story, does nothing to make your point.

But seeing as your goal is to move the topic away from Obama’s favored bias, you do have an agenda. And this new tape of him laughing with bombers at an anti-Semitic event is not helping you prove your point. If the MSM hides it, you’ll know it’s another case of racially-based Socialist-friendly media BIAS.

You pull anything out of the hat in an effort to try and support anything (what exactly, I’m still not clear) rather than honestly admit that there is indeed relevance to what Malone says and that anyone with an average I.Q. who has kept up on the election coverage would know this.

My neighbors are professional, educated people who are in the tank lock, stock and barrel for Obama, and yet they even admit that the media bias is shameful. (that doesn’t change their support of him but at least they can be honest about that issue). That’s the difference between people like them and people like you who just lob flamethrowers or do anything but honestly address the issue.

    madmax333 (0c6cfc)

  59. Those who deny media bias say MUCH more about themselves than they do about actual media bias.

They tell others “I am either stupid or a hopelessly partisan intellectually dishonest fool.”

Countless studies show members of the press donate to Dems over Republicans at a rate of more than 10 to 1, vote Democrat over 80 percent of the time and countless studies show the press gives FAR more favorable coverage to Democrats than Republicans. On top of that the public, at a rate of somewhere near 70% agrees that the pres is biased towards Democrats.

Need one more piece of proof? Lefties in comments sections of blogs ALWAYS defending the press. When Democrats/Leftists are the ones defending the press as not being biased towards Democrats/Leftists it’s a poor choice of spokesmen and an incredibly weak and dishonest argument.

Why keep lying about this? I really don’t get the deliberate intellectual dishonesty.

  62. Have to disagree with the writer here…the most shameful part of the media is not at all the Joe Plumber episode. No one gave a shat about this guy until McCain hoisted him into a national idol. And now they’re bitching because some people did some research and found not everything is cut and dry and golden…just like REAL LIFE? And that this guy who McCain is resting his hopes on may also not do badly under Obama? Sounds like due diligence to me.

I’m more concerned about the lack of coverage of Obama’s tax policy (besides Joe’s basic objection…taxes redistribute wealth? NO SHIT SHERLOCK…I think we figured that out when we the income tax was instituted in the first place, the question is whether all or any of Obama’s numbers add up) and the sketchy donations method. This Joe thing was a sham perpetuated by the McCain campaign. Might as well demonize the media for showing pics of Ashley Todd getting arrested…can’t a poor girl fake a prank for the good of her party these days without being humiliated?

The Sunday shows today are all convinced that McCain has lost. That being the case, I am a little more optimistic after watching them. I did notice that Peggy Noonan is on the Stephanopolis panel now so her anti-Palin diatribe has been successful in getting her more invitations. She also referred to Governor Palin as Mrs Palin. Sad to see someone who was once a good conservative writer stoop to such stuff.

  68. [RE: Ashley Todd. Too good not to re-post.]

The new article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about the Ashley Todd case indicates that she has been a supporter of . . . Ron Paul!

    From the article:

“In March, Ms. Todd was asked to leave a grass-roots group of Ron Paul supporters in Brazos County, Texas, group leader Dustan Costine said. He said Ms. Todd posed as a supporter of former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and called the local Republican committee seeking information about its campaign strategies. . . .”

“About a month earlier, he said, Ms. Todd sent an e-mail to the Ron Paul group saying her tires were slashed and that campaign paraphernalia had been stolen from her car because she supported Mr. Paul.”

And finally, referring to her MySpace profile:

“Among the books she lists as favorites: The Scarlet Letter.“

truthnjustice: Obama is a terrorist who hates America and wants to bring communism, I get that part.

To be more specific, Obama really is an ultra-liberal, so he understandably has great tolerance for those running the gamet from the left to the radical left (Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright, among others).

Obama is a lot more dogmatic on the left than McCain is dogmatic on the right. In fact, Obama’s opponent sometimes has been seen as too namby-pamby by a number of conservatives. Therefore, it’s hilarious if so-called centrists in America perceive Obama as being somehow more “moderate” than McCain.

    As leftist as the Leftism

Although he frequently makes a point of finding something charitable to say about his opponents’ arguments, Sen. Barack Obama almost always ends up voting liberal.

“The arguments of liberals are more often grounded in reason and fact,” the Illinois Democrat wrote in “The Audacity of Hope,” a memoir published last year. “Much of what I absorbed from the sixties was filtered through my mother, who to the end of her life would proudly proclaim herself an unreconstructed liberal.”

Obama has a 95 percent liberal rating from Americans for Democratic Reform, a liberal advocacy group that ranks all members of Congress. Yet he is often portrayed as a centrist.

“His record is liberal, and his rhetoric is moderate,” explained Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics.

By pointing out the merits of both sides of an argument, Obama often sounds statesmanlike, even if he almost never ends up siding with conservatives.

If Obama survives the Democratic primaries and becomes his party’s presidential nominee, his liberal positions will not necessarily hurt him among the centrist voters who cast ballots in the general election, according to Charlie Cook, editor of the Cook Political Report.

“How you come across is more important than how you vote,” Cook said. “If voters perceive you as moderate, then your voting record isn’t terribly relevant. Perception is more important than reality.”

The press knows who the press is for, and it isn’t generally the one to the right. This has been true all my life. What has also been true is that the Republican had to get around it with the truth of his stands, the force of his arguments, the un-ignorability of his words, the power of his presence. You have to go over the head of the interpreters and gently seize the country by its lapels.

  72. from a CNN story:

McCain sources say Palin has gone off-message several times, and they privately wonder whether the incidents were deliberate. They cited an instance in which she labeled robocalls — recorded messages often used to attack a candidate’s opponent — “irritating” even as the campaign defended their use. Also, they pointed to her telling reporters she disagreed with the campaign’s decision to pull out of Michigan. Watch why the campaign is fighting »

A second McCain source says she appears to be looking out for herself more than the McCain campaign.

“She is a diva. She takes no advice from anyone,” said this McCain adviser. “She does not have any relationships of trust with any of us, her family or anyone else.

“Also, she is playing for her own future and sees herself as the next leader of the party. Remember: Divas trust only unto themselves, as they see themselves as the beginning and end of all wisdom.”

One must wonder if the negative stories that the media does publish are the result of bias or by her own unfortunate actions.

  77. Bill Crystal this morning addressed some of the complaints from the McCain staff. He has talked to others on the staff and the consensus is that she is very unhappy with the way some of the staff have handled her part of the campaign. I agree.

She was kept away from the media, then put in a hostile interview with the cards stacked against her. She wants to go on a Sunday show and Fox News Sunday would love to have her on. So far, the staff have said no but I would not be surprised to see her on next Sunday. She is an excellent politician and the McCain campaign has been poorly organized with sniping from a few people, like Mike Murphy, who were pushed out over the past year.

In the McCain campaign, the candidates are far better than their staff although the TV ads have been excellent. In the Obama campaign, the staff are far more competent than the two candidates.

What if it is insurance, because the junior Senator from Illinois knows that the MSM has been covering up all kinds of issues (voter fraud, connections with terrorist-sympathizers, and so forth)?

Do you want Senator Biden to be President? And if not him, who do you feel about Nancy Pelosi?

I remember when the Left carried on about Dan Quayle in a similar vein, and all I can say is that Quayle seems like Alex Trebek compared to Senator Biden.

I can think of at least one that would be better than Palin (Letterman, anyone? -Oops, I don’t want to leave out Al Roker). Her two years as Alaskan governor have given her a lot of support with the Alaskan people, and I commend her for that. But, on closer inspection, it appears that a lot of her ‘accomplishments’ aren’t all that impressive. The success of the oil pipeline project has been called into question recently, and there are some ethical questions that need to be addressed before we can call anoint her the queen of integrity. The bridge to nowhere has already been examined, and we can safely say that she wasn’t the crusader she claimed to be against pork until that project was killed in congress. There are a lot of questions I had about her that were not directly addressed, but simply swept under the ‘liberal media bias’ rug. Furthermore, McCain himself is simply arguing for more of the same economic policies that have destroyed our economy. With the way things are going now, I can’t in good conscience vote for a candidate who is homeland defense on the basis of his military experience. FDR wasn’t in the military and he did pretty well for himself during WWII.

  90. _________________________________________

One likely reason Obama favored Biden for the VP slot is because of their philosophical camaraderie in the Senate last year.

However, Biden apparently is a bit less dogmatic than Obama. So when Obama embraces the left, if not far left (again, referring to his hanging around people like Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, etc), you can be sure that’s due to his comfort zone being located there.

As for Biden, his track record of plagerizing and, more recently, making stunningly ridiculous comments — such as Franklin Roosevelt being president in the 1920s and speaking on television, no less — indicates his main philosophical orientation is that of a flake, or more precisely a liberal flake.

Joe Biden’s voting record has generally placed him among the center of Senate Democrats ideologically in National Journal’s annual congressional vote ratings, with some decided peaks and valleys.

Biden entered a strong liberal phase between 1986 and 1992, when he was among the 11 most-liberal senators three times. Not coincidentally, perhaps, Biden ran for president in 1988, and he presided as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee during some epic showdowns with Republican presidents.

Biden’s most liberal year in the ratings was 2007, when he again ran in the Democratic presidential primary. His composite liberal score of 94.2 placed him as the 3rd most-liberal senator in 2007, two ticks behind Barack Obama, who was the most liberal senator last year with a score of 95.5.

In other years, Biden has been more of a centrist. Four times from 1993 to 1998 his composite liberal score fell to the 60s–most notably in 1997, when only three of the 45 Democratic senators had a more conservative rating. More recently, Biden has generally fit near the center of Senate Democrats.

That’s been replaced. Democrats operate on a code where if it isn’t illegal, it isn’t wrong, unethical, or even worthy of the least bit of shame. I point out particularly that lying is not illegal. And even those acts that are illegal aren’t shameworthy unless it’s proven, and there is no such thing as incontrovertible proof. Plus, even if a Democrat commits an illegal act (e.g., registering to vote without obtaining residence), the illegality can be undone with a “takeback.”

“In the latest Gallup tracking poll, Obama leads Mr. McCain 50 percent to 43 percent among registered voters. Mr. McCain’s deficit in that survey has remained seven percentage points or more for most of the last two weeks.

“Since Gallup began presidential polling in 1936, only one candidate has overcome a deficit that large, and this late, to win the White House: Ronald Reagan, who trailed President Jimmy Carter 47 percent to 39 percent in a survey completed on Oct. 26, 1980.”

But then the author of this New York Times story gives other examples of late surges:

“In 1968, Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey all but erased a 12-point early-October deficit before losing narrowly to Richard M. Nixon. In 2000, Vice President Al Gore wiped out a seven-point deficit in the final 10 days of the election, winning the popular vote but losing the Electoral College to Mr. Bush.”

His affiliations and resume gaps really prove that what ML wrote bears weight, and frankly, is on the minds of millions. Especially in recent days.

FDR was personally responsible for several decisions that cost probably thousands of lives, among them his refusal to fire Gen. MacArthur for incompetence early in the war. His policy of allowing cabinet members free rein to make policy without being reined in probably resulted in the Germans fighting for several months longer due to Morganthau’s public announcements of his proposals for post-war Germany and the unnecessary casualties that resulted in ( not to mention post war occupation by the Soviet Union of several countries ).

A main reason alternative media came into being and has thrived is because the MSM was already biased and not doing a good job. 203. I keep hearing this stuff about CIndy McCain’s father from the trolls so I looked at the Wikipedia entry. That doesn’t sound like much.

What is more concerning is Michael Yon’s comment today about an Obama presidency.

    Greetings,

The outcome of the upcoming U.S. elections will have a profound impact on the war. Meanwhile, the day to day fighting continues. If Senator Obama is elected, I expect to spend a great deal of time covering the fighting. Judging by his words, Senator Obama must be watched closely or we might see some terrible decisions. I expect 2009 to be the worst year so far in the Af-Pak war, which has serious potential to eventually become far worse than Iraq ever was. If Senator McCain is elected, I’ll breathe easier in regard to the war.

For a short dispatch, please click, “Are you Connected.”

    Very Respectfully,

    Michael Yon

I read Michael Yon and Michael Totten to find out what is going on since the MSM can’t be trusted.

For Michael Totten’s impression of a president Obama:

Senator Barack Obama hopes to be the first American president to engage in diplomatic negotiations with the Islamic Republic regime in Iran. He even says he’s willing to meet with Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad without preconditions. Surely he must understand that what he’s proposing is a radical departure from foreign policy as practiced by both parties. Franklin Roosevelt didn’t meet with Adolf Hitler or Emperor Hirohito, Harry Truman didn’t meet with Kim Il Sung, Ronald Reagan didn’t meet with any Soviet leader until after glasnost and perestroika were in place, Bill Clinton didn’t meet with Saddam Hussein or Iran’s Mohammad Khatami and Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, and no American president met with Fidel Castro.

In any case, whether Obama’s wish to engage Ahmadinejad is mainstream or radical, and whether it’s foolish or wise, may not even matter. It isn’t likely to happen. Obama may not care about preconditions, but the Iranian governmentcertainly does. Mehdi Kalhor, Iran’s Vice President for Media Affairs, told the Islamic Republic News Agency that “as long as U.S. forces have not left the Middle East region and continues its support for the Zionist regime, talks between Iran and U.S. is off the agenda.”

Of course, if reports of that video tape the LA Times is sitting on are correct, Obama may remove support for the “Zionist regime” as a first order of business.

After all, when Obama a few months ago publicly rationalized away the nature of Russia/Putin storming into the Republic of Georgia, by creating a moral equivalence between that act of war and the US in Hussein’s Iraq in 2003, there’s no telling how foolish an Obama White House — and its blame-America-first mentality — will be.

The Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth and .. um.. more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society. And..uh..to that extent as radical as people try to characterize the Warren Court … uh… it wasn’t that radical … it didn’t break free from …um..the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution … at least as it has been interpreted and the Warren Court interpreted it in the same way that … that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties … says what the states can’t do to you … it says was the Federal government can’t do to you but it doesn’t say what the Federal government and what the state government must do for you on your behalf. And that hasn’t shifted and ..uh.. one of the I think tragedies of the civil rights movement was .. um.. because the civil rights movement became so court focused that I ..uh. think there was a tendency to loss track of the political and community organizing activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalitions of power which bring about redistributive change and …um… in some ways we still suffer from that.

    Is it 1929 or 1977 or 2002 or 2004 or ???

That’s it I’m going to bed.

  266. Hi Darleen:

    When you write:

“…that’s just peachy with snuffy et al…”

I think you give them too much credit for being thoughtful. They remind me of P.J. O’Rourke’s description of the Left: “Yay, drugs; boo war.”

Again, the trolls who have been really pouring it on right now have two things in common:

    1. Studied ignorance of history and current events, let alone context.

    2. Positive joy at saying nasty things to their opponents.

These aren’t intellectual opponents. They are just unpleasant children, no matter their chronological ages.

    Eric Blair (51924c)

  267. It’s always amusing to see the “Saddam wasn’t such a bad guy” apologists show up. Walter Duranty would be proud.

  270. # 260. Personally, I wish there was some way for the people who voted for Bush to be held accountable and billed for it. For the price of the Iraq war and the price of the Trillion dollar bail out for the financial industry etc..

I got an idea, how about we all pay for it, cause the dhimmcrats were for it, before they were against it.
Typical Kerry flip-floppers that are not sure who and what to pander too.

Lets also pretend that Barney Franks (D) gay lover wasnt an executive at Freddy Mac while Barney (D) was chairman of the finance committee and we wont even mention that black guy (D) who got $90 million while cooking the books at Fannie Mae and also a good Obama (D) friend.

Lets also pretend that Obama (D) back in the day, wasnt suing banks forcing them to loan money to the unqualified.

He (D) is looking out for the poor you know!

  271. Note: When I say dhimmicrat, I am not implying Obama is a Moslem,
I am implying the dhimmitude of the democratic party.

“History” is a big place, Eric.

I was just reading about a trip Charles Dickens took to America in 1842 that I only learned of today by accident while reading about Upper and Lower Canada.

Is there a particular piece of it you think us “trolls” are ignorant of?

Some factual nugget which would cause us to rethink our opinions of John McCain, Karl Rove, Sarah Palin, our current economic problems, etc.?

Personally one of the things I like best about the Iraq war is that our armed forces smashed the Baathists, killed or captured tons of terrorists…and the left wing scum had to pay for it!

Well, the handful that aren’t on welfare, anyway.

  280. I went to bed. Pardon my late (early) entry back into this. The swift boat veterans who testified against Kerry were found to have been on different boats in some cases, or having had relayed their stories from 2nd or 3rd sources in the others. Yeah, sounds like a solid story to me. Some of the veterans later admitted to making up their ‘accounts’. So, yeah, Bush won that election. The American people now know the truth, sadly they didn’t know it on election day and now we’re in a nice little mess here.

  282. Don’t you all just love trolls and their constant revisionist history? At least they promise that Obama will get America back on track. Those much higher taxes and redistribution of wealth should help. I see Mr. Theresa Kerry, the presumptive sec. of state, is calling for a New Deal II. Shades of libtard heros rising from the grave. FDR, LBJ and Jimmy Carter didn’t wreak enough long term damage to the country. McGovern I features oh so many nuanced improvements, eh?

McCain just sits there and blames greedy Wall St. for the current fiasco. All those greedy Rethuglicans took us down the road to peredition and Barney Franks’ boyfriend and Obama’s pal, both in positions that exacerbated the corruption at Fannie And Freddie, are blameless. Pay no mind that Dodd and Obama cleaned up financially. Obama was right to sue banks to give deadbeat minorities home loans. Yes, NINJA no income, no job, no assets qualifications are the way to go.

Let’s see how Free Speech is squashed. Pay no mind to all that illegal campaign cash from abroad and here. ACORN is an innocent protector of voters’ rights. Really great to hear now that several Alabama counties are over 100% in registrations of eligible voters.

  284. Despite his skill at being a tech columnist, this guy doesn’t strike me as someone who has done any journalism recently that requires some decent shoe-leather…doesn’t it occur to him that the reason that we haven’t seen interviews by Rezko is that Rezko only became known after his indictment? And that most people undergoing this process do not talk to the media or to anyone besides their lawyer?

    And Ayers…

Ayers wasn’t convicted of anything, SPQR.

There was no connection between AQ and Saddam. In fact OBL and Saddam despised one another.
This one is jaw-dropping, every time one of the Leftists brings it up.

I love it when the Left trots out this canard.

…Dave and by tons you mean like 4 terrorists? Yay! 100,000 Iraqis died and we got 4 terrorists! Yippee! Let’s celebrate.

So all we have accomplished is killing 4 terrorists? I am not even going to bother to ask it to support this lie.

  287. Just think of all the money that the Bush-haters in the media (and out of the media, for that matter) have had to fork out to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan while they fruitlessly did everything in their power to undercut Bush and sabotage the war effort.

They can lie and twist and spin ’til hell freezes over, but they’ll never put the Baathists back in power and they’ll never be able to bring Abu Abbas or Saddam Hussein back to life.

We smashed the Baathists, drove the Taliban into the Hindu Kush, killed scum like al-Zarqawi…and Bush-hating propagandists like Dan Rather and Noam Chomsky had to foot the bill.

It don’t get no sweeter than that.

    Dave Surls (0880a7)

  288. Funding pointless wars are a small price to pay to get rid of the Republican party, dave.

    JD (5b4781)

  291. “Funding pointless wars”

    Thanks for contributing.

Instead of keeping their money to buy Che t-shirts or copies of “Manufacturing Consent”, the lefties have been forced by the very tax system they created to fund a war they’re against, and to top it off, they’ve even paid George Bush’s salary.

And, even if their new messiah wins the election, ably assisted by the propagandists and liars in the MSM media, there is absolutely nothing they can do to change what’s already been done.

    Ha ha ha.

    Choke on it, leftards.

    Dave Surls (0880a7)

  292. I went to bed. Pardon my late (early) entry back into this. The swift boat veterans who testified against Kerry were found to have been on different boats in some cases, or having had relayed their stories from 2nd or 3rd sources in the others.

But they were at the same scenes on other boats. One of the “vets” who appeared with Kerry at the Dem convention later was shown to have been in the hospital at the time Kerry was there. He quickly disappeared from the Kerry campaign.

Yeah, sounds like a solid story to me. Some of the veterans later admitted to making up their ‘accounts’.

I presume you are talking about that vet who supported Kerry and appeared at the convention. Yes he made it up.

So, yeah, Bush won that election. The American people now know the truth, sadly they didn’t know it on election day and now we’re in a nice little mess here.

Sadly, most of them have been misled by the MSM and you trolls. One day they will understand how well Bush protected us. I didn’t agree with him on a lot of things but the GWOT and Iraq were two I did. I fear we will learn abut Bush as we watch Obama wreck the country and open us up to Islamic terror. They are his supporters and will expect him to reward them.

They call it sadder but wiser.

  293. It’s amazing what a guilty conscience within an honorable person can produce: a proclamation of the truth.

    Icy Truth (1468e4)

  294. You can’t be serious, Mike K.

    From a washington post article:

On the core issue of whether Kerry was wounded under enemy fire, thereby qualifying for a third Purple Heart, the Navy records clearly favor Kerry. Several documents, including the after-action report and the Bronze Star citation for a Swift boat skipper who has accused Kerry of lying, refer to “all units” coming under “automatic and small-weapons fire.”

The eyewitness accounts, on the other hand, are conflicting. Kerry’s former crew members support his version, as does Rassmann, the Special Forces officer rescued from the river. But many of the other skippers and enlisted men who were on the river that day dispute Kerry’s account and have signed up with Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a public advocacy group that has aired television advertisements accusing Kerry of lying about his wartime service.

From an outsider’s perspective, the flotilla of five 50-foot Swift boats that followed the Bay Hap River that humid March day has spawned two competing bands of brothers. One is fiercely loyal to Kerry and frequently appears with him at campaign events. The other dislikes him intensely and is doing everything it can to block his election.

Many Swift boat veterans opposed to Kerry acknowledge that their disgust with him was fueled by his involvement in the antiwar movement. When they returned from Vietnam, they say, they were dogged by accusations of atrocities. While Kerry went on to make a prominent political career, they got jobs as teachers, accountants, surveyors and oil field workers. When he ran for president, partly on the strength of his war record, their resentment exploded.

Sounds to me like the veterans who were in those commercials had an axe to grind. Sometimes ‘truth’ can be a little confusing when you’re justifying your means by the end, eh? Similar to the Ayers thing. It doesn’t matter that Obama was 8 at the time, that is a minor detail. Hardly worth mentioning at all. Look over here! Terrorism! Murder! …don’t pay attention to the man behind the curtain…

Fear, smear, and queer worked in 04, but not this year. Choke on that for 4 8 years.
