Palin the Politician

[Guest post by DRJ]

Sarah Palin campaigned today in Pennsylvania where she emulated Beaver Falls native Joe Namath by guaranteeing a come-from-behind win in the Keystone State. She also compared the Ohio and Pennsylvania values of Joe the Plumber and Joe the Quarterback with Barack the Wealth-Spreader:

“At the western Pennsylvania rally, Palin continued the Republican ticket’s use of Ohio plumber Joe Wurzelbacher’s encounter with Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., to attempt to paint the Democratic presidential nominee’s tax policies as a radical plan to redistribute wealth. A few supporters in the crowd shouted “socialism” during Palin’s remarks, while another man yelled out “Obama’s a socialist!” above the crowd.

“He’s hiding his real agenda of redistributing your hard-earned money,” Palin said to boos. “So I know that we have other Joe the Plumbers in the house, in this audience today, and it doesn’t sound like many of you are gonna be supporting ‘Barack the Wealth-Spreader’ in this election.”

Palin is a fascinating politician. As Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels puts it, Palin is powerful, disciplined, gracious, has a good sense of humor, and “people connect to her.”

  1. Looks like the plan is to ride Joe the Plumber to the end, I guess, even though it doesn’t seem to be working as well as hoped beyond the base.

And if in this time where people are concerned about their jobs, retirement incomes, health care, and education costs, I’m not sure that hammering home a new nickname of “Barack the Wealth-Spreader” is going to hurt Obama. A lot of people wouldn’t mind a little wealth spread their way these days.

  6. She is a great politician and campaigner. If McCain wins, he will owe it to her and he knows it. The attacks on her are disgraceful but she has handled it all beautifully.

  7. Palin is one of the most polarizing figures to come along in a long time. That she connects easily with the average person (and they with her) will always offend those who consider themselves something above average.

It will be interesting to watch her politics evolve and mature if McCain takes the WH. Also curious will be these two very strong willed people finding their own middle ground on issues they are not eye to eye on.

As Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels puts it, Palin is powerful, disciplined, gracious, has a good sense of humor, and “people connect to her.”

Already Hollywood is trying to figure out how to most effectively make use of her just in case the veep thing doesn’t work out.

The pecking order in DC is pretty well established.
V-P’s hawk the Admin line, or keep their mouths shut. It can’t get any simpler than that. And, if they try to leak (a time-honored DC tradition) a President can make things very uncomfortable for any Veep that an unauthorized lead can be traced back to.
Though GWB has not appeared to relish playing hard-ball, I would not attach the same reluctance to John McCain. His sense of honor would compel him to make an example of someone who tried to betray him.
Sarah Palin, on the other hand, seems to be the sort of person who would actually resign the office if the conflict between her and the boss was great enough; and then, go to the country with her argument just as she did over the corruption on the oil board in Alaska.

  9. Dana – She is only polarizing because the Left hates her.

I am still waiting for Baracky to start bringing people together. I think he left part of it out, bringing people “that vote for me” together.

  11. AD, I think the possible difference in this case and why I give it any thought is the point that Mike K makes in #6 – McCain, if he wins, will indeed owe it in enormous part to Palin and he knows this. Therefore, I don’t know how much of an example he would wish to make of Palin, and although reluctant to say it, I think there would also be entirely different dynamic due to her being a female.

OTH, I don’t see Palin as being obstinate but I do see her as feisty and and full of pluck when an issue is near and dear ot her (Anwar)…

I think they could forge a very strong alliance but not without some volatility given their respective wills.

    Dana (658c17)

  12. I don’t see ANWR as a big political battle between the two. If they win, the ongoing oil shortages will compel the govt to allow drilling in ANWR, since there are no justifiable environemental reasons not to. It would also allow Pres. McCain to stick-it to those on the Left who walked away from him after he supported their enviro causes for as long as he did.
Also, it wouldn’t be the first time that a Veep spent long periods of time outside of DC. There is no time-clock to punch, after all.

    Another Drew (b4e6e5)

  13. allow drilling in ANWR, since there are no justifiable environemental reasons not to

  16. How many people are aware that the Republican Senate passed a bill to allow development and Clinton vetoed it about ten years ago?

Or the actual acreage that would be affected? Sure, Palin herself says there are 20 million acres in the refuge, but only need a 2000 acre footprint, which is smaller than the area covered by LAX. Yes, the poor porcupine caribou is the rallying cry of the obstructionist green tools.

Anyway care to hazard a guess where oil prices will be soon enough under Obama, what with his draconian taxes on fossil fuel usage?

Also, if everything alleged in that article is true, and Obama was born in Kenya and all (he wasn’t, he was born in the US State of Hawaii but just play along) how does that disqualify him? His mother was a citizen, as was McCain’s mother when McCain was born in Panama.

The idea that any woman who is a US citizen could give birth to a child who would not be eligible to be President, simply because of the place where she gave birth, is wholly repugnant to both the spirit of US democracy and also the plain meaning of the term “natural born” in the Constitution.

  26. Palin is the new Reagan. She is a largely empty vessel, full of ideology and talent. After McCain’s defeat, she will go back to Alaska and have every bright conservative in America flying up there to teach her the policy in-and-outs and the how to answer questions.

When she comes back in 4 years, she will be every bit the pol she is now, but she won’t go blank on follow-up questions. Same snark, more knowledge….she will kill.

And, given what Obama’s inheriting, two wars, malaise, global recession, it’s gonna be a close race. Like I said yesterday, Palin/Patreaus 2012. I won’t vote for ’em, but you guys will.

  27. Yes, just as Reagan’s recently – released private correspondence show, he was a complete doofus from the beginning. And in like manner, Palin’s ousting of her corrupt political overlords in her own party also speak to nothing of substance. For twelve years you’ve been asking “Who is John Galt?” This is John Galt speaking. I’m the man who’s taken away your victims and thus destroyed your world. You’ve heard it said that this is an age of moral crisis and that Man’s sins are destroying the world. But your chief virtue has been sacrifice, and you’ve demanded more sacrifices at every disaster. You’ve sacrificed justice to mercy and happiness to duty. So why should you be afraid of the world around you?

Your world is only the product of your sacrifices. While you were dragging the men who made your happiness possible to your sacrificial altars, I beat you to it. I reached them first and told them about the game you were playing and where it would take them. I explained the consequences of your ‘brother-love’ morality, which they had been too innocently generous to understand. You won’t find them now, when you need them more than ever.

We’re on strike against your creed of unearned rewards and unrewarded duties. If you want to know how I made them quit, I told them exactly what I’m telling you tonight. I taught them the morality of Reason — that it was right to pursue one’s own happiness as one’s principal goal in life. I don’t consider the pleasure of others my goal in life, nor do I consider my pleasure the goal of anyone else’s life.

I am a trader. I earn what I get in trade for what I produce. I ask for nothing more or nothing less than what I earn. That is justice. I don’t force anyone to trade with me; I only trade for mutual benefit. Force is the great evil that has no place in a rational world. One may never force another human to act against his/her judgment. If you deny a man’s right to Reason, you must also deny your right to your own judgment. Yet you have allowed your world to be run by means of force, by men who claim that fear and joy are equal incentives, but that fear and force are more practical.

You’ve allowed such men to occupy positions of power in your world by preaching that all men are evil from the moment they’re born. When men believe this, they see nothing wrong in acting in any way they please. The name of this absurdity is ‘original sin’. That’s inmpossible. That which is outside the possibility of choice is also outside the province of morality. To call sin that which is outside man’s choice is a mockery of justice. To say that men are born with a free will but with a tendency toward evil is ridiculous. If the tendency is one of choice, it doesn’t come at birth. If it is not a tendency of choice, then man’s will is not free.

And then there’s your ‘brother-love’ morality. Why is it moral to serve others, but not yourself? If enjoyment is a value, why is it moral when experienced by others, but not by you? Why is it immoral to produce something of value and keep it for yourself, when it is moral for others who haven’t earned it to accept it? If it’s virtuous to give, isn’t it then selfish to take?

Your acceptance of the code of selflessness has made you fear the man who has a dollar less than you because it makes you feel that that dollar is rightfully his. You hate the man with a dollar more than you because the dollar he’s keeping is rightfully yours. Your code has made it impossible to know when to give and when to grab.

You know that you can’t give away everything and starve yourself. You’ve forced yourselves to live with undeserved, irrational guilt. Is it ever proper to help another man? No, if he demands it as his right or as a duty that you owe him. Yes, if it’s your own free choice based on your judgment of the value of that person and his struggle. This country wasn’t built by men who sought handouts. In its brilliant youth, this country showed the rest of the world what greatness was possible to Man and what happiness is possible on Earth.

Then it began apologizing for its greatness and began giving away its wealth, feeling guilty for having produced more than ikts neighbors. Twelve years ago, I saw what was wrong with the world and where the battle for Life had to be fought. I saw that the enemy was an inverted morality and that my acceptance of that morality was its only power. I was the first of the men who refused to give up the pursuit of his own happiness in order to serve others.

To those of you who retain some remnant of dignity and the will to live your lives for yourselves, you have the chance to make the same choice. Examine your values and understand that you must choose one side or the other. Any compromise between good and evil only hurts the good and helps the evil.

If you’ve understood what I’ve said, stop supporting your destroyers. Don’t accept their philosophy. Your destroyers hold you by means of your endurance, your generosity, your innocence, and your love. Don’t exhaust yourself to help build the kind of world that you see around you now. In the name of the best within you, don’t sacrifice the world to those who will take away your happiness for it.

The world will change when you are ready to pronounce this oath:

“I swear by my Life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man,nor ask another man to live for the sake of mine.”

  30. Also, if everything alleged in that article is true, and Obama was born in Kenya and all (he wasn’t, he was born in the US State of Hawaii but just play along) how does that disqualify him? His mother was a citizen, as was McCain’s mother when McCain was born in Panama.

I don’t accept the stories of Obama’s birth in Kenya as fact but he has certainly been evasive about the whole thing (and other things, as well). One difference is that McCain is the son of a military officer on active duty, which establishes citizenship of the child. In Obama’s case, assuming he was born in Kenya, he would need to establish residence in the US within a certain time, I think 10 years. Maybe the reason his grandparents brought him to Hawaii was to establish citizenship.

The idea that any woman who is a US citizen could give birth to a child who would not be eligible to be President, simply because of the place where she gave birth, is wholly repugnant to both the spirit of US democracy and also the plain meaning of the term “natural born” in the Constitution.

    Comment by Aplomb

No, it requires evidence of an intent to establish citizenship and that means residence, I think, by the age of 10. There are lots of kids born in Europe and Asia fathered by US servicemen who have never lived here. Many are biracial. They are not US citizens unless they established residence within the period set by law.

  31. Here’s the law:

INA: ACT 301 – NATIONALS AND CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES AT BIRTH

Sec. 301. [8 U.S.C. 1401] The following shall be nationals and citizens of the United States at birth:
    (a) a person born in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof;
    (b) a person born in the United States to a member of an Indian, Eskimo, Aleutian, or other aboriginal tribe: Provided, That the granting of citizenship under this subsection shall not in any manner impair or otherwise affect the right of such person to tribal or other property;
    (c) a person born outside of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents both of whom are citizens of the United States and one of whom has had a residence in the United States or one of its outlying possessions, prior to the birth of such person;
    (d) a person born outside of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents one of whom is a citizen of the United States who has been physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for a continuous period of one year prior to the birth of such person, and the other of whom is a national, but not a citizen of the United States;
    (e) a person born in an outlying possession of the United States of parents one of whom is a citizen of the United States who has been physically present in the United States or one of its outlying possessions for a continuous period of one year at any time prior to the birth of such person;

If Obama was born in Kenya, he is not a U.S. citizen, unless mommy had continuous residence in the United States for one year prior to his birth and daddy was a “national” of the United States and I doubt that he was. For sure he was not a citizen.

  32. allow drilling in ANWR…

With the price of oil sitting at $65/bbl, It may not be economically feasible to explore/extract/refine ANWR reserves with petroleum @ $65/bbl.

But then, that would be the market, not a Senator from Massachussetts or Illinois, setting the parameters. Which is as it should be.

    Hey JD!

On the “John McCain has more honor and integrity in his nose hairs” front here’s what Senator McCain recently said about President Bush’s administration, the man whose endorsement he so actively sought mere months ago, when asked to characterize their failures:

“Spending, the conduct of the war in Iraq for years, growth in the size of government, larger than any time since the Great Society, laying a $10 trillion debt on future generations of America, owing $500 billion to China, failure to both enforce and modernize the regulatory agencies…failure to address the issue of climate change seriously. Those are just some of them.”

John Sidney McCain committed adultery with the daughter of a convicted felon, stepping out on his injured wife and three children. President Reagan and his wife Nancy were so appalled by McCain’s behavior they subsequently gave the wronged woman a job in the White House.

Members of the Republican religious right might feel less inclined to vote for Senator McCain. They might equate McCain with Adultery. Which if it were put out as slogans or attack ads it might look something like this:

    “Go fuck yourself”

No, again, you left out the part when you speculated about Sen. McCain fucking my wife.

You are making timmah look honest.

Or is it that he is willing to sell out anyone, anytime, anywhere to try to get elected?

It is not nice to talk about Baracky like that. He has thrown his grandmother, his preacher, and more advisors than you could count under the back of the bus.

That McCain has issues with President Bush is only news to people like you.

Does it ever tire of being an asshat?

Why didn’t “The One” take his wife and kids to HI to say goodbye to his dying Grandmother?
Or, is the news of her critical illness just another Obama LIE?
Is he really there to defend himself in a lawsuit re his birth-certificate?
What files are there in HI that need to be sanitized to air-brush out embarrassing, or criminal aspects, of his past?
Why doesn’t the Obama Campaign enable internet protocals that prevent fraudulent credit-card use for donations?
Why are they encouraging fraudulent activity to contravene FEC rules on contributions?

Important, loaded questions. Our potential President, with the dirtiest campaign the world has ever seen. Great if you’re a German, though.

  56. Palin is a fascinating politician. As Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels puts it, Palin is powerful, disciplined, gracious, has a good sense of humor, and “people connect to her.”

Oh, she’s fascinating. But she’s fascinating in the way that the rejects on American Idol are fascinating. You watch Sarah Palin, you hear her stumble her way through an interview, and you’re like, what on earth were you thinking? How could you possibly think you were prepared to handle this?

I don’t know if you’ve been watching the joint McCain-Palin interview on NBC over the past few days, but she is flaming out. You can see in McCain’s face that he just wants to scream, ‘Shut up!’ She is glaringly amateur, as a candidate she just has crippling weaknesses on top of crippling weaknesses. And remarkably, the conservative base loves her to death. If you guys lose this election and come away with thinking that she is the future of the party, that will be just perfect.

    Slappy (4da6b3)

  57. you hear her stumble her way through an interview, and you’re like, what on earth were you thinking? How could you possibly think you were prepared to handle this?

And regarding Obama’s wife’s earrings–do we really want to start a running list on how much Cindy McCain spends on her wardrobe?

    JerrySpringer (64f963)

  60. And Baracky spent $5,300,000 to build greek ampitheatre to honor himself. You are the only one that gives a shit that the RNC purchased clothes for her.

Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? If you guys had any sense of shame, this would be one of those statements you would have ended up feeling embarrassed about in 4-8 years.

    Slappy (4da6b3)

  62. Sorry JD,

Who cares about the cost of Palin’s wardrobe you ask?

    Republicans!

There are already condemnations from many Republicans who point out that while various Republican congressional candidates are hurting for money, the RNC spends $150,000 on Palin’s wardrobe.

You see, dear JD, they don’t want to get caught in the suction (or is that SUCKtion) of the sinking McCain/Palin ship and resent the RNC not
spreading the wealth around to their other candidates.

Oh, and yes–Sarah Palin spent taxpayer dollars flying her kids around Alaska as opposed to campaign dollars–if that makes you feel any better.

    JerrySpringer (64f963)

  63. Oh, heaven for fucking bid that she travel with her children.

You guys claim to care about the issues, but the issues you want to talk about are things like whether or not Sen. McCain had an affair over 30 years ago, who paid for clothing for a Vice Presidential campaign, and whether or not a sitting Governor’s family should travel with her.

    ML (14488c)

  69. And JD

    What I did say

In the context of explaining how smears work

And how they attempt to narrowly define a candidate based on a previous “fact” of their biography

And instill FEAR of a candidate

    For Example

    IF

    John McCain

GIVEN HIS PRIOR HISTORY OF ADULTERY

needed to seduce your wife in order to win this election

    THEN

wouldn’t you be afraid of Senator McCain

    “making time” with her?

    That is what I said.

YOU are the one who keeps using the F word here.

This also was in the larger context of explaining how hypothetical and conditional smears need no evidence–like the Obama=Ayers manure you’ve been shovelling.

So if you don’t like it JD, I suggest you look in the mirror.

And as James Dobson keeps telling us, CHARACTER COUNTS!

    JerrySpringer (64f963)

    Mike K (f89cb3)

    MCCAIN=ADULTERY

just take a look at ML’s post on Obama’s “good friends” and repeat after me:

Hypothetical and Conditional Smears do not need Evidence

Just try to instill as much FEAR of the candidate as possible.

Anybody want to talk about that great John McCain Tax Cut Plan??????

    JerrySpringer (64f963)

  73. “Why did you shoot him”

“Some people deserve to be killed”

    Another Drew (b199b1)

  74. So if you don’t like it JD, I suggest you look in the mirror.

So, let me get this straight, if I object to you dragging my wife into the discussion, in a vile manner, it is my fault?

So, to be clear, when you said “Sorry”, you were again lying. Because your next comment drug her back into the discussion, and you have since offered a pseudo-defense of your actions.

Slappy – Make the case that they shouldn’t, please. Add anti-child to the list of great ideas that the trolls have come up with.

Now if you wish to interpret this as your own real wife then to paraphrase your charming self:

Do any of you guys listen to Sean Hannity or Fix Noise? This is their daily fare.

    JerrySpringer (64f963)

  78. Attempting to stay above the melee, ML, how did a thread on Palin’s capacity as a politician degenerate into a straight-from-the-fever-swamp recitation of every guilt by association b.s connection Staney Kurtz has produced?

Seriously, ML, what does any of that guilt by association stuff say about anyone? McCain has plenty of crazy right wingers and corrupt politicians and lobbyists in his background. Am I supposed to believe this means McCain will go Pinochet on American democracy?

As this election draws nigh, and you guys fall further behind, ML, you are getting shrill and silly. Whereas in 2004 you peed your pants when some left-winger compared Bush to Hitler, you have called Obama a Communist, a street radical, a socialist, etc. I’m not a huge fan of moral equivalences (my name is not Pablo), but Jesus, buy a sense of perspective.

  79. JD…You cannot have any kind of valid conversation with a LIAR and a fool.
    Why do you even try?

This is a repeat of that other troll who specialized in attacking Gov. Palin’s infant.
Ignore this asshole, and perhaps the others will recognize what their fate will be also.

    Another Drew (b199b1)

  80. Springer, geez. Of course we want to bring up Cindy McCain’s purchases. Her family worked hard to start a successful business. Your jealousy won’t block the fact that it’s her money, and when she spends on things her purchases benefit the economy.

Now we come to the DIFFERENCE: Michelle Obama and $6,000 earrings.

The entire Obama campaign is based on Socialism; thwarting dreams, discouraging business, suppressing people from achieving material goals. He got to enjoy those goals. Why shouldn’t our children? Or you? Or me? His many political allies promote oppression and obedience in order to support a segment of the population that doesn’t pay into the tax system. Your analogy to Cindy McCain’ s purchases and the hypocritical Obama-bling earrings represents the opportunity of freedom and free enterprise. Obama wants neither of these for you or me.

The Palin clothing is nonsense, a total diversion. Any politician dresses well and it’s mandatory, especially at the national level. Your Dems, Pelosi, Feinstein, and good ol’ John Edwards there with the $400 haircuts… not sure why he did that. But get off Palin’s wardrobe. Let her donate it later – or keep it if she’s in office. You would want her to wear her clothes from her college days, though: “I’m broke but I’m not flat-busted!” Then you’d call her white trash.

If any of us had her balls, we’d be down at City Hall trying to clean up the messes we see at home. That’s what put her in the Governor’s office – and against all odds.

These are stupid distractions from what Obama’s doing in Hawaii this week. I hope Mike K’s suggestion works to clean up the trolls – – or at least get people to stay on topic re the candidates and the issues. Not these sleight-of-hand frothy diversions.

    Vermont Neighbor (c91cfe)

  81. JD,

  82. ” you have called Obama a Communist, a street radical, a socialist”

Google Obama + New Party. Do it, and get back to us.

    Vermont Neighbor (c91cfe)

  83. Why? So, I could find a bunch of blogs re-fighting the 1960’s and alleging Obama is secret member of the New left from when he was 22?

    Very helpful.

Now Google Palin + Alaska independence party and explain to me why this doesn’t make her a kook. Stanley Kurtzian logic says if you share an education board with a chump, then you’re a chump.

What does Kurtzian guilt by association say about sharing a bed with a secessionist?

See, it’s stupid to maintain Palin is some anti-American secessionist just because her husband was 10 years ago. It’s the same exact level of stupid to argue that a Civil Rights lawyer, Havard Law Grad is a Communist (don’t you think Brad Berenson would’ve noticed?)

In the end, who cares. You guys are walking so far off the deep end with black helicopters coming to take your guns and reviving Communist smears from the Birchers. Appearing to be screaming loons has you down 10 points in Indiana!

You have gone down the silly guilt by association route for three months and McCain is FURTHER behind.

  84. Now can we get back on topic. “Palin the Politician”. Why is her approval rating on the plunge right now? What happened to the feisty, pit-bull from Alaska, called “the Barracuda”? Or something like that. What happened to the magic? She is certainly not bringing in the women vote for McCain. If anything, she is attracting a lot of men to ….well, McCain. Why is she becoming such a drag on McCain? Do you think if McCain had to do it again, he would still choose her?
    I found this very amusing.

Its illogical to suggest that Obama was a 20 year member of that American hating racist black theology church and its goddamn American hating pastor the Rev Wrong, who was Obama’s mentor and also married him and his bitter half and baptized his children. Then, you just keep up the guilt by association, ML, and enjoy your 12 point loss.

Oh, and can explain to me how Jeremiah Wright saying god would damn America for her sins is different from the myriad of times I’ve heard white preachers say God would “judge’ America for its naked boobies on TV or its acceptance of homos? Explain to me how it’s different from Falwell telling us God let 9/11 happen because he was punishing us. It’s not different, unless all you watched was five seconds from Hannity and Colmes. Most preachers are dolts and maniacs and the good Reverend is no different.

  98. For JD

Googling New Party brings one to the website of Human Events, NRO, and Worldnetdaily. There’s not a reputable news outlet, even on the Right, who would even talk about.

    Why?

The “evidence” for Obama’s membership in the New Party, by contrast, rests on the testimony of a defunct website and a pair of ambiguously-written 12-year-old articles from a magazine with single-digit readership. Beyond that, the insistence that the New Party represented some sort of burrowing, Trotskyite faction of the revolutionary left is, well, insane. Unless, of course, one equates revolutionary socialism with living wage campaigns, voter registration drives, or calls for greater vigilance on anti-trust laws, or any of the other issues that animated the various urban-based party organizations. Which I suppose, given the innate deficiencies of the folks promoting this story, is probably the case.

In any event, the New Party allegations — like the Ayers story — have been around for months now. Several bloggers dropped this turd on the sidewalk in May; the usual suspects recently rediscovered discovered the pile and, after shoving some candles into it, have decided that it’s a heap of birthday cake.

Kirsinow insinuates that the media won’t touch the Obama/New Party story because they fear being tagged as racists. More likely, they haven’t touched it because it isn’t actually a story. Why?

    timb (a83d56)

CBS’s poll reflects a 49% DISapproval rating for Governor Palin.

I expected illogical thinking (after all, you have subscribed to one of the more classical logical fallacies: guilt by association), but factually incorrect. You are a yummy, frothy mix of silliness. Governor Palin’s approval rating dwarf Bush’s and Congress, but, more voters approve of Biden, let alone Obama ot McCain.

Similarly, 27% of independents now have a very unfavorable view of the Alaska governor, nearly triple the 10% who felt this way in mid-September. However, Palin remains very popular among the GOP base. More than eight-in-ten Republican voters (83%) – including virtually identical percentages of men (82%) and women (83%) – express positive opinions of Palin, which is largely unchanged from the mid-September survey.”

  113. Palin gave SNL its highest rating in 14 years.”

    This is quite true.

    Now is it because:

    A) people watching wanted to vote for her

    B) people watching wanted to laugh at her

Last time I looked SNL is a comedy program.

Is it too far a stretch of your imagination dear ML that the majority of viewers probably fell into the B category?

I know the logic on this one is hard–but I’m sure you can work through it. It’s a whole lot easier to understand than how John McCain’s Tax Cut Plan will get this country out of a recession.

    EPluribusUnum (64f963)

  114. By the way,

How does Sarah Palin feel about Senator McCain palling around with convicted domestic terrorist G. Gordon Liddy–I don’t think we have her views on that one.

Barack the bombthrowing Arab commie terrorist candidate for president cannot be considered a socialist through guilt by participation in such a pussy candy-assed imitation wanker group.

Yeah, it’s was a comedy show alright.

Maybe its just me being a somewhat average American, but a persons humor speaks volumes to me. It says a lot about their personally, maybe other Americans are the same as myself?

    JerrySpringer (64f963)

  121. So the evening Sarah Palin appeared on Saturday Night Live most viewers watching wanted to vote rather than laugh at her?

You’re definitely not an “average” American because the rest of us can’t afford the really outstanding hallucinogenics you appear to be taking.

    JerrySpringer (64f963)

  122. And does anyone here have FBI or Homeland Security connections?

Daleyrocks the plumber a.k.a. bombthrowing comment appears dangerously unhinged.

Or maybe he was one of those “special guests” at that G. Gordon Liddy fundraiser for McCain?????

    JerrySpringer (64f963)

  123. JerrySpringer

So Liddy planted real bombs in real American like the real terrorist Bill Ayers?

    Oh he didn’t,

I forgot that illiberal’s always have completely different meanings to commonly used words.
    AKA, illiberal speak.

In this case a “terrorist” in anyone with a (R) after their name convicted of breaking and entering into a (D) office, not someone who plants real bombs meant to really terrorize real Americans into accepting the bombers ideas, out of fear.

It will be a cold day in hell when illiberal’s use the word “terrorist” and “racist” in the proper context and using the proper definition.

This is not the “internet” that Al Gore “invented” that is government funded, here in “reality” Patterico’s pays for its bandwidth, so its not free speech!

So you can claim all kinds of BS about your “free” speech being infringed upon, but here it isn’t free and you can be blocked at the owners whim. They have no legal obligation to post you illogic nonsense.

But that is a good example of just another typical illiberal value, where they want interest (rights) in something they haven’t paid a dime for.

The illiberal’s sure have a very adolescent mind set, perhaps that’s the appeal Obama has on them, same mind set.

  130. Hey ML

Real difference between G. Gordon Liddy and Bill Ayers?

Law enforcement caught G. Gordon Liddy before he killed anyone.

Kinda like the difference between the Clinton Administration catching terrorists planning to blow up LAX versus the Bush administration failing to stop 9/11 or even do anything while it was happening—— except hide in their bunkers.

Many Thanks to the hard-working FAA chiefs who scrambled Air Force jets to go after the last hijacked plane while Bush/Cheney cowered in their holes.

Looks like my estimate for Sarah Palin’s hair and make-up was way off:

    $22,800

is what Sarah Palin’s make-up artist was paid in the last two weeks alone.

Sarah Palin’s make-up artist is in fact the highest paid member of the McCain campaign staff.

She’s doesn’t seem to know that fruit fly research helped identify one of the causes of autism,

    BUT SHE SURE LOOKS GOOD!

    RIGHT?

    JerrySpringer (64f963)

  148. Even Sarah Palin admits climate change is a problem.

You want to put this woman–whose grasp of even basic scientific protocals is apparently non-existent–a “heartbeat away from the presidency”?

You trust your grandchildren’s future to her???????

Or do you believe this is just the end of days and you need to get as high a tax cut as possible so you can live out armageddon in style?

    JerrySpringer (64f963)

  149. JerrySpringer, first of all, she’s obviously smarter than Joe Biden.

Secondly, you are again lying about Bill Ayers. This seems to be a constant refrain of yours, to defend the violent enemies of our nation.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  150. Nearly half (49%) of Democrats now have a very unfavorable impression

It does not seem like the favorability rating for a Republican from a Dem sample should be a fairly significant finding. That only 49% of the Dems think she is evil is frankly, surprising.

I suggest you opt for quality

I think you have set your sights a little high there, DRJ.

Bush administration failing to stop 9/11 or even do anything while it was happening—— except hide in their bunkers.

    SPQR (26be8b)

I’ve been modeling my hypothetical smears of John McCain on McCain attack ads, RNC robocalls, Fox News, et al and you say,

“no sense of right and wrong, no morals, and a complete lack of ethics”

    You’re nauseated and disgusted right?

Just like independent voters are by the McCain/RNC smear strategy.

So would you like to discuss McCain’s Tax Cut and Mortgage Bail-out plan?

Or the triumph of superficiality over substance as evidenced by Sarah Palin’s $11,400 a week make-up and hair-styling bills?

    JerrySpringer (eae616)

  156. Jerry must be one of those academics who is concerned about the tarnishing of unrepentant communist bombthrowing terrorist Bill Ayer’s reputation as an emminent educator in academic circles.

I think 3200 or so of those idiots signed a ridiculously worded petition minimizing what Ayers did and whitewashing his current views of America.

  162. Here’s one of your stalwart Republicans on McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin:

The difference in character and temperament has become plainer by the day, and there is no decent way of avoiding the fact. Last week’s so-called town-hall event showed Sen. John McCain to be someone suffering from an increasingly obvious and embarrassing deficit, both cognitive and physical. And the only public events that have so far featured his absurd choice of running mate have shown her to be a deceiving and unscrupulous woman utterly unversed in any of the needful political discourses but easily trained to utter preposterous lies and to appeal to the basest element of her audience. McCain occasionally remembers to stress matters like honor and to disown innuendoes and slanders, but this only makes him look both more senile and more cynical, since it cannot (can it?) be other than his wish and design that he has engaged a deputy who does the innuendoes and slanders for him.

NBC: Obama spending $293,000 an hour in October

“10 times the amount spent and STILL only 4-5 points up? Yeah, he can manage an economy.”

    “Soros has taken over.”

“I don’t know about the vendors or anything, but I have to say there is something downright unseemly about all this money being spent on an election. I think Obama would buy more good will if he spent the money on Aids research or something.”

“Simple and easy way for Oliar to prove his innocence: publish his donor list. But considering that we can’t even see his college transcripts (probably because he attended classes taught by Ayers), this will never happen.”

“Gee, potential credit card shenanigans, and Dear Leader Obamassiah’s pick for the VP slot is Joe Biden, D – MNBA? Very interesting.”

It’s from the good folks at Hot Air. Kinda makes your clothing diatribe wilt a little.

    Vermont Neighbor (c91cfe)

  165. And today’s Sarah Palin Multiple Choice Question is:

When Sarah Palin phoned the mentally unbalanced McCain staffer subsequently arrested for fraudulently claiming she was sexually assaulted and mutilated by a 6 foot 4 inch BLACK Obama supporter did Palin

    A) Offer sympathy and support for this outrageous, obviously racially motivated attack?
    B) Ask her if her story was really true?
    C) Tell her to keep up the Good Work!

Now when I suggest elements of Racism and Bigotry existed among McCain supporters some of you really got all bent out of shape: any comments now?

Oh, and I’m retracting my earlier remark about Fantasyland—it casts aspersions on Disney’s good name: McCain/Palin is definitely becoming PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE.

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  166. Hey Vermont Neighbor,

Yeah, I know–running that ad about how McCain said he isn’t George Bush which ends with the video clip of McCain saying:

I voted with George Bush over 90% of the time, more than many of my Republican colleagues

is expensive. $293,000 an hour–wouldn’t surprise me with all the FCC deregulation over the years.

You’re suggesting perhaps that television stations give candidates free air time during elections?

Isn’t that Socialism and spreading the wealth around?

Christopher Hitchens is a small-r republican in the tradition of same in Great Britain; ie, Anti-Monarchy.
Along the American political continuum, he is considered, and sometimes self-described, as a Socialist.
Just because he supports the removal of despotic thugs, and their replacement by democratic self-government, does not make him a member of the GOP (which if you’re unaware, stands for Grand Old Party – a bit of pretentiousness in describing something in the 1860’s that was created only a decade earlier).

the only public events that have so far featured his absurd choice of running mate have shown her to be a deceiving and unscrupulous woman utterly unversed in any of the needful political discourses but easily trained to utter preposterous lies and to appeal to the basest element of her audience. McCain occasionally remembers to stress matters like honor and to disown innuendoes and slanders, but this only makes him look both more senile and more cynical, since it cannot (can it?) be other than his wish and design that he has engaged a deputy who does the innuendoes and slanders for him.

I’ll open this question to any of you bright sparks out there!

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  190. How about Palin and National Security?

John McCain becomes incapacitated and Commander-in-Chief Sarah Palin becomes “the decider” for the 150,000 troops in Iraq as well as the ones getting beaten up in Afghanistan—that sit well with you folks based on her vast foreign policy and military experience? She can always get advice from General McClellan—I hear there are some good spiritualists in Washington, D.C.—except wasn’t McClellan the one who didn’t beat R. E. Lee? Maybe you folks can let her know she needs to try to contact General Grant.

And McCain has this new ad out—something about a president being tested in the first six months in office is it?

Sarah Palin, Commander-in-Chief—how many of our enemies world-wide would take this as a signal to attack us????

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  191. Jerry – Do you have trouble distinguishing facts from opinion?

Can you call someone’s opinions lies?

We can certainly call what you represent as facts lies.

You burned out ember of a brain is having trouble today Jerry. Don’t worry, puberty is right around the corner.

    daleyrocks (60704b)

  192. “Sarah Palin, Commander-in-Chief—how many of our enemies world-wide would take this as a signal to attack us????”

Jerry – Given this is a similar scenario to Obama becoming President and requires the incapacitation of someone else first, I think it strongly reinforces the argument Biden made in the primaries – Obama is not ready to be President.

Thanks for bringing it up, idiot.

    daleyrocks (60704b)

  193. More stunning proof of Sarah Palin’s intrepid understanding of foreign policy from Slate.com:

In her Sept. 11 interview with ABC’s Charlie Gibson, Sarah Palin had this to say about Russia: “They’re our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.” Is that true?

Yes. Russia and Alaska are divided by the Bering Strait, which is about 55 miles at its narrowest point. In the middle of the Bering Strait are two small, sparsely populated islands: Big Diomede, which sits in Russian territory, and Little Diomede, which is part of the United States. At their closest, these two islands are a little less than two and a half miles apart, which means that, on a clear day, you can definitely see one from the other. (To see the view of Big Diomede from Little Diomede, check out this webcam.) The Diomede Islands are often blanketed by persistent fog, which makes visibility difficult. On a clear day, though, a person standing at sea level can see a little less than three miles across the ocean. You can see farther if you go higher—at the highest altitude on Little Diomede (919 feet), you can see for about 37 miles. (Between mid-December and mid-June, when the water between the two islands freezes, an intrepid explorer can just walk from one to the other.)

The tactical importance of this proximity is debatable, however: Big Diomede has no permanent population though it does house an important weather station. Alaskans can, however, see into the future from Little Diomede since Big Diomede (or Ratmanov Island, as it’s known to the Russians) is on the other side of the International Date Line.

“On a clear day” I’m sure Sarah Palin will be able to handle Vladimir Putin–don’tcha think so?

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  194. Jerry – Can’t you talk about Sarah’s shoes like the rest of the Obamatards? What’s wrong with you fool?

    daleyrocks (60704b)

  195. Well, at least someone (who Springless refuses to identify, as usual) got the geography right.
The Diomedes straddle the International Date Line, and you can see one from the other.
Now, what part of saying that “you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska” is inaccurate?

And, just who did you crib this from?

    Another Drew (a9cfc2)

  196. “…Sarah’s shoes…”

    Too uncomfortable.
Reminds him of the taunts in grade-school (last year, wasn’t it?) of the other kids about how his
Momma Wears Combat Boots, Open-Toed .

    Another Drew (a9cfc2)

  197. #191: JerrySpringer

    You have a point.

All the Islamic terrorists in the world think the Obama is a secret Moslem.
Those same Islamic terrorists are supporting the Obama because they think he will “change” America into some pseudo Sharia Islamic state.

Now Palin as POTUS will not cause them to attack us anymore then they are ready want to, but you are correct that Obama as POTUS will make them happy.

The conclusion, dhimmicrats and Islamic terrorist are hard to tell apart.

    ML (14488c)

  198. And, if he is really a Muslim, and he has been denying it, then he has committed Apostasy, for which the punishment is Death!

    Another Drew (a9cfc2)

  199. Another Drew

He would get a free pass on that, either based on his age of conversion or, I cant remember what its called. But in Mohammadanism is A-OK to lie in order to save life or face, being the complete opposite of Judeo-Christian values.

So I see a lot of wiggle room, Islamic style of course.

Hey, lets vote in the Obama so all the terrorist in the world are happy.

    ML (14488c)

  200. Yes, but I would have to think that someone would be nervous about the random nutcase who might not get the message that it was all an elaborate hoax to confuse the Infidels, and is going to set the world straight.
All it takes is one Imam to issue a fatwah.

    Another Drew (a9cfc2)

  201. JerrySpringer, you attack Palin for that truthful comment when Slow Joe Biden is telling people that the world will see Obama as weak, and will test his resolve and Biden tells us that we won’t be happy with Obama’s reaction?

You really are a pathetic case.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  202. I could see that happening.
Nutcase and Islam go hand in hand.

The hate for America that the liberal holds so dear is utterly disgusting

4 years ago it was Al Qaeda for Kerry, this year its all terrorist for Obama.

    ML (14488c)

  203. So who’s going “off topic” now, boys?

Nobody want to reassure America about Sarah Palin’s outstanding resume, excellent knowledge, and tested leadership?

Oh and Another Drew, if you bothered to actually read the “you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska” post you’ll notice the Slate.com citation.

I know actual reading often escapes you–and Sarah Palin–but thankfully neither you nor she have a hope in hell of becoming president.

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  204. JerrySpringer, her leadership is more “tested” than Obama’s. She’s had infinitely more executive experience than all of the Democratic ticket put together. I’m comfortable with that.

    You remain a clown.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  205. In fact all of you do have very bright futures in the Palin 2012 campaign–I’d send those resumes in early!

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  206. Right, Jerry, when Biden does not run from a tough question any longer then look us up. Until then, go impress your dog with your superior intellect.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  207. Hey SPQR,

I think you need to contact the McCain campaign immediately.

They can put together a new ad:

I’m Joe the Plumber, and Sarah Palin has had infinitely more executive experience than all of the Democratic ticket put together. I’m comfortable with that.

I think all remaining undecided voters need to hear from you!

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  208. Speaking of Joe, how’s his book deal and congression bid coming along?

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  209. Speaking of Joe, how’s his book deal and congressional bid coming along?

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  210. Yeah, Jerry, that’s the kind of vapid comments we are getting used to seeing from you.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  211. If Joe peddles his wares properly he may actually become eligible to get into that higher tax bracket and then legitimately complain.

Of course, first he’ll have to pay those back taxes he already owes.

Sorry–off topic–except Sarah Palin does keep mentioning Joe in her speeches doesn’t she?

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  212. JerrySpringer, Democrats love people who don’t pay their taxes – like Al Franken and Charles Rangel. So why don’t you like Joe?

    SPQR (26be8b)

  213. And in terms of sheer competency? Based on the clear(?), intelligent(?), intelligible(?) way McCain/Palin have run their campaign and presented themselves so far you’d put them in charge of the richest, most powerful nation on earth?

This is the problem you guys are facing in selling McCain/Palin as a team the American public should hire: when was the last time you hired someone solely on their resume?

McCain/Palin “in action” comes across like McHale’s Navy meets the Gang Who Couldn’t Shoot Straight.

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  214. JerrySpringer, again – you didn’t notice Joe Biden’s opinion on Obama. You remain a clown.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  215. Another Satisfied Alaskan:

Sarah Palin became John McCain’s vice presidential nominee, and there on national television was our governor bragging (not quite truthfully) about how she stopped the Bridge to Nowhere. Just like that, we were back on the front page, exhibit A in Palin’s reformist résumé.

We settled in for a second round of public lashing. Sure, we had been unhappy last spring when the governor shelved our project by sending press releases to the media and not telling us to our face. But we were really disappointed when she called us “that community” on national television, in the same tone of voice that Bill Clinton had once used to describe “that woman.”

Ketchikan Gateway Borough Mayor Dave Kiffer

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  216. JerrySpringer, so much for the Democratic talking point that she didn’t kill the bridge earmark. You are getting your talking points confused yet again.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  217. Gettin’ real eloquent there SPQR:

Blah, blah, blah clown. Blah, blah, blah clown.
Blah, blah-blah, clown, ba-blah, blah clown.

You want to call Christopher Hitchens a liar about his Sarah Palin comments?

Or maybe we should check out John McCain’s comments about George W. Bush if you want some real good flip-flops–I’m afraid ol’ John will be wearing those for the rest of his career.

    JerrySpringer (01935e)

  218. Adult ADHD is curable Jerry. You should probably get some help.

    carlitos (cae053)

  219. Well, treatable anyway.

    carlitos (cae053)

  220. JerrySpringer, its almost amusing how fast you abandon a failed talking point.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  221. Just in case you missed them SPQR:

McCain: “I voted with George Bush over 90% of the time, more than many of my Republican colleagues.”

McCain on failures of the Bush administration:

“Spending, the conduct of the war in Iraq for years, growth in the size of government, larger than any time since the Great Society, laying a $10 trillion debt on future generations of America, owing $500 billion to China, failure to both enforce and modernize the regulatory agencies…failure to address the issue of climate change seriously. Those are just some of them.”
