Palin Fever is Contagious

Like many conservatives, Beldar has Palin fever but he thinks he knows why it’s contagious: Because she’s having a grand old time.

  1. It’s a shame that her talents are dismissed by some sour puss conservatives like David Frum and Peggy Noonan. They are devotees of a “perfect is the enemy of the good” school and miss her potential. Frum is a brilliant theorist but seems to want perfect theory and presentation before he will consider someone an ally. Noonan is still waiting for the reincarnation of Reagan, as is George Will. They will see the republic fall a long way before they get their perfect candidate. I think Palin may well be that candidate with a few more years of experience. If McCain loses the election, and I haven’t given up, I think she will run for Murkowski’s Senate seat in 2010. The Democrats hope she will go back to Wasilla but she will have an enthusiastic base by next month, including me.

  2. I don’t understand the Reagan-love from the intellectuals in the Republican party. It must a combination of nostalgia and sculpting of the past.

I remember that era quite well, thank you, and the MSM lambasted Reagan repeated for being a dimwit: falling asleep at meetings, consulting astrologers, vindictive toward political enemies, believing in creationism (and many pundits kept stating that “Ray-gun” would institute Armageddon due to his religious beliefs), gaffe prone, needless bellicose, incurious, and anti-intellectual.

    Doesn’t all this sound familiar?

George Will and Peggy Noonan are certified intellectuals (not that I am claiming that is a good thing, necessarily). My guess regarding their support while Reagan was President was his personality, not his education, reasoning power, or temperance. It may be that this is what disturbs Noonan and Will about Palin-support: it reminds them of themselves.

Because I promise you, if Reagan were magically running for President today, saying precisely what he said and did then, those two would never, ever support him.

I think that intellectuals of the Right are turning into a version of Adlai Stevenson, constantly belitting everyday people and self-congratulating themselves on what they know.

That’s not enough, madam, we need a majority!

  3. VP candidates are supposed to be able to attract people from outside the base to the ticket, Mike.

Palin has no talent for this…since she was picked, 12 million McCain supporters have turned into Obama supporters.

Palin in 2012, please, Dear god.

What a landslide that will be.

  5. The race went from dead even to a ten point lead for Obama, Dmac.

10 percent of American voters equals roughly 10-12 million Americans.

Palin has turned the Republican party into a regional party.

  6. VP candidates are supposed to be able to attract people from outside the base to the ticket, Mike.

If that were really the case, Obama would have done a whole lot better than a half-wit party hack like Biden.

    JVW (becba1)

  7. Snuffles, your mathematics is as bad as your analysis. Let’s assume you are correct and the race went from “dead even to a ten point lead for Obama.” You seem to be estimating about 100 million voters, a reasonable number. If it went from dead even (50 million to 50 million) to a ten point lead (55 million to 45 million), then only five million votes switched, not the 10 million you claim. Back to algebra with you.

    JVW (becba1)

  8. #5 Prior to naming Palin as his VP, McCain was behind Obama in the polls.
If the MSM examined Obama, like they have examined Palin’s daughter, Obama would be properly recognized as world-class affirmative-action failure.

  12. Palin has no talent for this…since she was picked, 12 million McCain supporters have turned into Obama supporters.

I won’t correct your math as others have done that but the race is NOT a 10 point race. If it were, you trolls would be over on left wing blogs congratulating each other. Right now, I consider it within 2 points and the state races, because the polling is less frequent and less accurate, cannot be determined. I think it is within the range of error and the Bradley effect has it dead even. There goes your theory but we will only know on November 5.

Palin in 2012, please, Dear god.

What a landslide that will be.

Yes, I agree. It will be a landslide. We just disagree on the winner. I just hope there will still be elections if Obama wins.

  14. Snuffles (#11), not that I believe your analysis either, but at least you now have an appreciation for mathematics.

  15. Comment by snuffles — 10/14/2008 @ 3:28 pm

No, oh runny-nose-one, VP candidates are supposed to throw red-meat to the base by attacking the other team. It is the responsibility of the candidate for President to acquire support from members of the opposing party, and from independents.

Now, here’s a hankie, have a good blow, and don’t bother the adults anymore.

    Another Drew (767298)

  16. JVW,

If Christopher Buckley can be turned into a Democrat by Palin, Joe Sixpack certainly can be.

Admit it, a vast majority of Americans find Palin repulsive.

  17. Wohoo. Now both sides have their “The One”. I feel so misty eyed. Oh my…

    j (5d386c)

  18. well, actually…

If the race is at 43-45 before Palin, and after the race is 49-47, then there is a net gain on both sides. (I’m making the literal numbers up.)

Before Palin, Bambi was ahead. After Palin, JSM was ahead. After Acorngate, Bambi is ahead. But I don’t see any swing of thinking voters to the Democrat Party. I just see more voters for each side.

    steve miller (0fb51f)

  19. 10 percent of American voters equals roughly 10-12 million Americans.

Amazing, you’ve stumbled on the magical formula, Snuff Film! Quick, make haste and alert the political analysts at the MSM immediately, they’re apparently in the dark about this unexplained phenomena – that apparently only you’ve discovered.

    Dmac (cc81d9)

  20. If Christopher Buckley can be turned into a Democrat by Palin, Joe Sixpack certainly can be.

Yeah, there’s another great analogy; a wealthy Ivy Leaguer (who’s a writer) is exactly like the typical middle – class voter. Brilliant! How does he do it?

    Dmac (cc81d9)

  21. Hey, AD, I hope I didn’t come across badly. I like Reagan, and I didn’t think he was a dolt. Imagine how well that went across on my campus.

Anyway, Reagans published letters show quite a remarkable man.

As for the astrology business, you are correct about Nancy, but the MSM media at the time promoted the whole “Ronnie does whatever Nancy wants” meme.

What I was trying to say is that these pundit attacks on Palin (and GW Bush, for that matter) sound very familiar. And my most important point is that Will and Noonan’s criticisms of Palin could have been applied (other than dropping “g”s in language) to Ronald Reagan, who they revered.

    They don’t like outsiders, period.

But I hope that Dr. K. is correct, and that Palin’s popularity with many suggest that voters don’t want professional politicians so much anymore!

    We’ll find out soon enough.

Some trolls, huh? I wonder if they are the same people….

    Eric Blair (02cc16)

  22. Admit it, a vast majority of Americans find Palin repulsive.

Now you’re just fooling yourself. I might as well claim that a vast majority of Americans find Obama to be a terrorist sympathizer. I fear you have no understanding of the word “vast,” let alone “majority.” Better enroll in remedial English along with that math course.

    JVW (ce227e)

  23. That Palin is enjoying herself on the campaign trail just makes liberals hate her even more. Witness the comments of our trolls.

This seems like an aggressive lie on its face.

I just picked up tickets to see Gov. Palin speak in Indy on Friday. I am taking my 6 year old. I took her to see Hillary in the primaries. I tried to take her to see Baracky, but apparently I did not have the proper Democrat party credentials.

Eric, I know that you are one of the thinkers here, but I had to jump on that to ensure that the non-thinkers didn’t run away with it.

The media has been shameless in their outright advocacy for the Dems/Libs since the JFK coronation. This year they have reached a new low in their duplicity.

The one thing that makes it bearable is knowing that they are slowly going out of business, and that the discomfort that the manufacturing sector has had for some time, will shortly be visited upon the media.

George Will came to everyone’s attention as Reagan’s sparing mate in the 1980 debate practices. If it wasn’t for baseball, I wonder if he would still be around. He thinks he’s an Alsop, but I don’t find him that clear.
As for Peggy Noonan, a great writer, but not a very perceptive political theorist. Remember how she vacilated back and forth the last election?
Perhaps she should stick to writing about her immigrant Grandmother?

    Another Drew (767298)

  26. AD, sniffles has to do with a runny nose, snuffles has to do with a (thankfully) much less frequent malady, which at the moment I will not mention.

If the majority of US voters don’t like Palin but will vote for Obama, so be it. It doesn’t change the fact that Obama is the least qualified candidate in over 50 years, the farthest to the left of any serious candidate ever, the first to approve of infanticide in certain situations, and is personally embroiled, along with other major Dems, in the fannie and freddy fiasco. If he wins, America will get the leadership it deserves.

If Obama wins, the question will be whether the US will have a chance to recover after filling the Supreme Court with people that make Ginsberg look Conservative, increasing federal funds to ACORN, re-instituting the fairness doctrine, giving power to union bosses not union members, and leading a unilateral demilitarization of US interests around the world.

Naturally he nor the other trolls can elighten us as to just what Obama has ever accomplished in his life or admit that Obama’s experience don’t even match up with Palin’s. The affirmative action neophyte will hasten the US on the road to marxist perdition. 34. Thanks for the compliment, AD, but I served my time being called “stupid” for not voting the way my oh-so-smart professors and colleagues think I should vote.

Diversity rules! Except when it doesn’t.

Quite so about Will and Noonan. Noonan has written a book “Patriotic Grace” that I believe is born from her worry that partisanship will tear the country apart. I admit things are bad, but my brother reminded me of how the then-MSM treated Lincoln.

People are going to have to say “enough” to the press for a reason that both “D”s and “R”s should agree on: sooner or later, the shoe will be on the other foot. The Left in particular needs to imagine the laws, powers, and “things to ignore” in the hands of the far-Right.

If it is wrong one way, it is wrong the other as well.

Precedents don’t move backward much. And since the press has gone completely in the tank for Obama, the Left needs to consider what will happen in the other direction someday.

For example, if Obama just came out and said that the folks at ACORN should be prosecuted for potentially damaging voting integrity, think how far that we take him in the bipartisan sense that he claims to embrace.

Yeah, out of Chicago. I know.

    This comment about a troll:

“I fear you have no understanding of the word “vast,” let alone “majority.””

reminded me of the old adage:

The trolls pretty much overstate everything, yet are exceedingly sensitive to slights in the other direction.

But then, trolls aren’t about accuracy, let alone fairness, are they?

  47. So Palin says she’s “takeing the gloves off” and starts making calling Obama a terrorist/communist the centerpoint of her campaign. When was that, like two weeks ago?

Here are some poll numbers that just landed today:

    National LA Times/Bloomberg Obama 50, McCain 41 Obama +9

National CBS News/NY Times Obama 53, McCain 39 Obama +14

    National LA Times/Bloomberg Obama 47, McCain 39, Nader 3, Barr 1 Obama +8

    National CBS News/NY Times Obama 51, McCain 39, Nader 3, Barr 1 Obama +12

I point these out not because I think they’re predictive of the election results — they aren’t — but because they’re some nice short-term feedback on the “Obama is a terrorist and a communist; community organizers caused the economic meltdown” strategy Republicans have had lately.

How do you guys like the results of your little smear campaign? Gonna keep it up? As for me,

I’m kinda proud of the swing voters right now, for not buying the bullcrap. I should have had more faith, I guess. It makes me more hopeful that maybe McCain will actually start talking policy again, and forget about Ayers/ACORN.

    Phil (3b1633)

  48. I point these out not because I think they’re predictive of the election results — they aren’t

Then don’t bring them up in the first place – you seem to be unable to follow your own advice. Must’ve had too many boilermakers tonight.

    Dmac (cc81d9)

  49. Phil,

So the financial turmoil had no effect on the polls? That’s good to know.

    DRJ (c953ab)

  50. So the financial turmoil had no effect on the polls? That’s good to know.

The reason I attribute these numbers to the McCain campaign, rather than the economy, is that the past four days (the period covered by these polls) has been a lot more optimistic than the prior weeks. If the bad economy alone was driving McCain’s polls, you’d expect him to rise. I’ve been anticipating that, as have many Republicans, who are cheering for his “comeback.”

If these new polls are indicative of trends, McCain didn’t get a bounce from the economy lightening up. So what’s holding him down? All the polls agree that voters think McCain is running a very negative campaign, and is erratic.

Worst of all, there;s a consensus that Obama is way stronger on health care. That absolutely should not be. I feel like I’m beating a dead horse here, but voters should be impressed by McCain’s health plan. I keep having people tell me “isn’t McCain going to tax health benefits?” How is the McCain campaign letting the Democrats get away with that?

    Phil (3b1633)

  51. and forget about Ayers/ACORN.

Yeah, they should forget all about that angle – this vid’s for you, Phil. Now Wolf Blitzer’s doing stories on ACORN, this time focusing on their hiring of drug addicts and the homeless to do their registrations:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akHchjMNZ-Y

When CNN starts taking a serious interest, you can forget trying to marginalize the issue.

    Dmac (cc81d9)

  52. Phil,

Maybe they won’t make a difference but I think it’s too soon to tell. Some, perhaps many, of the Presidential polls are based on 3-day rolling averages so we may not be seeing those numbers yet.

  54. Dmac, marginalizing the issue isn’t the point. The point is that there are three weeks left in the campaign. Blitzer’s story or not, is trying to connect Obama to Ayers and ACORN really all Republicans have got?

That’s the best they can do to convince swing voters that McCain is the better candidate? “You should vote for McCain because Obama is a communist and a terrorist and a, uh, community organizer!” Wow, that’s inspiring. And if the American people think they want him, they can have him. But there is no blame for Sarah Palin trying to inform the public of what the MSM has refused to.

    My repeat formulation was :

    If nobody cares that

Prove anything I said there to be untrue. Saying something is a lie, no matter how many times, does not make it a lie. Sarah Palin has incited folks in her rallies to say hate-ful stuff about Obama and others. Denying that is lacking in integrity. But that is your manner, isn’t it?

  81. Prove anything I said there to be untrue.

Have simple rules of logic been inverted? Traditionally, when someone makes a point, or in your case, a lie, they have to substantiate the point. The onus is not on the listener to disprove the point.

You stated, as a fact, that

Palin fever is really contagious. It makes the crowd go crazy with some screaming hate-filled words like “terrorist!”, “Kill him!”, “Off with his head!”. Yes she is contagious.

There is no evidence that anyone yelled terrorist in referring to Barack Obama. No evidence that anyone yelled kill him in reference to Barack Obama. Certainly no evidence that any said off with his head about Teh Messiah.

Sarah Palin has incited folks in her rallies to say hate-ful stuff about Obama and others

This is the new leftist canard. I will give you credit, you come across as sincere. However, in order to do so, you must first overlook the likes of “let’s stone her, old school”, “Abort Palin”, and the endless list of things our sitting President has endured. Your faux concern about civility gives way once you start making up lies about your political opponents.

Plain speaking folks that will indeed call a snake a snake, diamond back or coral or just another water snake. Still a snake.

Sara probably is NOT an “intellectual”, but neither is most of what we call the members of congress. They are all, for the most part, generalists. They learn as they go, which is what they should be doing, the world today is rather complex and NOBODY arrives with credentials for the job! NOBODY! All of them must depend upon the bcrats and personal research for some sense of their jobs.

Truman was but a total KS hick when the presidency was thrust upon him. Seems he did ok with the new challenges that faced him. He did not apply intellectuals for advise, directly, but used his common sense, which is very uncommon today to locate, as his ultimate decision making. He also did listen to all along the way.

Sara is not a fool, and really do not think she is foolish either. She is also NOT afraid to ask questions of those that should know whats what. Sorta like she did with the librarian about how books are indeed banished from the kingdom.

Yet today she is chastised for asking a question? I do not know about you, but I’ve learned little in life about a whole bunch of topics without posing a question to somebody that was much more involved with a subject than I.

Remember the only stupid question is the one not asked?! I sure do.

I’m not afraid of Sara, actually I’m more afraid of McCain, but REALITY 101, it’s still in the lap of CONGRESS, not who happens to be pres at the time.

It is the congressional races the msm should be focusing upon, fark the pres race, outside of SCOUTS recommends, the POTUS is but a figure head!

Seems that Sara don’t care what side of any aisle you are on today, if you are wrong and doing wrong, then git out! COMMON SENSE, something we all seem to ask for, but such is never displayed in public. Common Sense seemingly is not Politically Correct.

That’s true. And am intrigued at the impeccable timing of the newly discovered shout. No evidence (ie audio, video–HOW many cameras and mics do they have at these rallies? ONE of them must have caught it) that the shout was made (not with the other one either–we took a liberal journalist’s word, Milbank, that one man called for the death of Bill Ayers).

This makes me suspect an Obama plant. But it could well be a crazy person. The point is that no one is supporting him.

And if I were in a crowd next to a person like that and a journalist or Secret Service person called “WHO SAID THAT?” I’d point to the person.

Someone above mentioned Christopher Buckley above. I thought this was interesting.

It may strike some conservatives today as odd, if not absurd, to see John McCain being subjected to an auto-da-fé conducted by such Torquemadas of the right as Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity. The other day, he even endured jeers at a conservative gathering in Washington, by otherwise well-behaved exemplars of conservatism. Indeed, turn on the TV at any hour of the day and you’ll find Mr. McCain being excoriated in harsher terms than he endured from his jailers at the Hanoi Hilton — variously denounced as a) not conservative, b) really, really not conservative, or even c) so not-conservative as to make you wonder if he isn’t just the latest re-issue of the Manchurian Candidate.

In response, let me offer a thoughtful, considered, carefully worded comment: Would you all please just…shut…up? (I’d insert an intensifier, but this is a family newspaper.)

Let’s all breathe into a brown paper bag and calm down and consider the question: Is John McCain a small-c or large-C conservative? (Odd that his surname should contain both.) Or is he not a conservative at all?

    There’s more:

And yet the sum of Mr. McCain seems (to me, anyway) far greater than the parts. How many elections offer such an inspired biography as his? And who among “us” — with the exception of Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi, who issued a statement saying that the thought of Mr. McCain in the Oval Office sent “chills up my spine” — would not sleep soundly knowing that the war hero was on the job calculating how to dispatch more Islamic fanatics to their rendezvous with 72 virgins, without an interlude of waterboarding, while in his spare time vetoing Senator Cochran’s latest earmark.

I told you yesterday I assumed, based on your own statements, that your “misstating the issue” about this was unintentional. You said this after a long discussion in the attached thread about it.

Then today you misstate the issue in exactly, precisely, the same way.

This is no longer unintentional and I stand by my statement that you made a statement that you knew to be false and misleading.

If things were not getting out of hand, why was there a public outcry, even from some Republicans that McCain should control it? Why did he feel the need to correct that woman that called Obama an “Arab”? Why has his campaign dropped the negativity recently? Because it was getting ugly and also because it was not affecting the polls. If anything, it has worsened his situation. Not true.
–“Off with his head” was a probable [terribly phrased] JOKE (your own link said it was about a tax plan)
–we took a liberal’s word (Milbank) that one person in a crowd of like tens of thousands yelled “kill him!” about Bill Ayers, with no support from the crowd,
your own link (see your comment at 8:06, above) says it’s not even known that the shout was “kill” or “him” or who it was about:

[from love2008’s own link at a liberal website]
“The Secret Service did not hear any threatening statements directed at targets under its protection and no threatening statements were reported to us by law enforcement or citizens at the event,” Wiley told Radar. Also unclear: whether the remark was directed at Obama or Ayers if the words were actually “kill” and “him.”

–there is indeed no evidence that anyone shouted “terrorist” about Obama at a rally.

Sarah Palin is telling the truth about Obama having noncasual and longterm professional relationships with unrepentant terrorists.

If whole crowds were calling for the death of ANYONE then you would have a point. But they aren’t, and you have falsely implied several times now that they are.

This is a question of fact, not opinion, BTW. Either “crowds” did it or they didn’t.

    no one you know (1f5ddb)

  113. lovie – Let me be really clear. I care not one iota what your opinion of me is. You have demonstrated, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you do not enter into any discussion in good faith, and have no compunction about bastardizing the truth to advance Teh Narrative in service of Teh One.

First, you’ll have to link to the audio of this being said. Indicate the time where you think it occurs. Then convince us that Sarah Palin actually heard it and the person who said it was within range of the microphone picking it up AND Sarah Palin. Please keep in mind inverse square theory and Fletcher Munson curves with regard to distance of speaker to her ears. Perhaps she hadn’t cast her “Super Hearing” spell because Todd was carrying their “stash” of “manna.”

Second, you’ll have to prove that the person who said it, was led to say it by Sarah Palin. Yes, you’ll have to prove that the “kill him” comment reported yesterday that was made a half-hour before Sarah Palin was even present was provoked by her…I dunno…mind ray. Please limit your proof to using the expertise of Gandalf, Saruman and the other Istari.

Third, you’ll have to prove that the person who said it was a McCain/Palin supporter rather than an Obama operative/media member (one in the same).

Fourth, you’ll have to ignore the numerous horrible things said about McCain/Palin/Republicans in general. Oh wait, you already have!

It’s fine if you “feel” your narrative is true. If you’re goal is to enter it into public record as “fact”, you have a metric shitton of proof ahead of you.

Contrast that with us who have reams of pictures, videos and audio clips of people saying horrible things about McCain/Palin.

    Bless your heart.

  118. The thought occurred to me, why are the Obama folk, trolls and MSM alike, trying to point out that Palin going directly at Ayers, etc., “Isn’t working, is backfiring”?

Do they believe it and are gloating, they just can’t contain themselves to laugh last? Or are they afraid that if the truth is told often enough people will eventually catch on, having previously believed the oft-told lie?

Whichever doesn’t make much difference, because we are going directly to the people, not through the MSM (to paraphrase), doing what we think is right, not just expedient.

It is said that when the True Messiah comes, He will laugh at those who rage against Him, knowing that all protest and opposition to final justice will be less than meaningless.

Prager had a nice monologue on his first hour today on how one unsubstantiated report in the MSM gets magnified as the basis of a lie that gets cross-referenced over and over until it is taken as truth. While the technology of today should make it easier to confront such inaccuracy, unfortunately it also hastens the spread of such untruth.
