Gigantic Viewership Numbers For VP Debate — And They Didn’t Tune In To Hear Joe Biden

Posted by WLS:

NBC Political Director Chuck Todd said earlier today that the VP debate turned into wash, a one day story that no one would be talking about by dinner time tonight.  Looks like Chuck T. might have some crow to eat.

The first McCain-Obama debate produced dismal TV ratings.  Last night was a different story.  Biggest debate viewership since 1992.  Biggest VP debate viewership ever.

It had a 45 rating, which was 42% higher than the McCain-Obama debate which scored a 31 (though it was on a Friday night).

Fox had its highest viewership numbers ever — 11 million.

Palin doing as well as she did WILL show up in the polling starting tomorrow.

  1. I just viewed some pics of the press attending Palin’s post – debate party last night. Priceless, they look like someone stole their lunch money – biased asshats.

Hate to burst your bubble but the polls show Palin lost.

Kind of amusing that because it wasn’t a train wreck the GOPers are giddy.

  4. jharpy wallows in the fever swamp shitholes and thinks the opinions of the denizen/retardos of DU/moron.org/huff/codepinko are mainstream. Hard to see anything clearly or honestly when you have your head stuck way up Obama’s rectum. Hope the trolls on this site don’t ever procreate and pollute the gene pool.

  5. Chuck Todd was engaging in wishful thinking — he wishes this would be a one-day story — but it’s hard to stop average Americans from talking about Palin in one day when that’s all the media has talked about for weeks.

And, like Dmac, I also saw the photo of the press after the debate. They were not happy.

It showed up today on intrade. Pretty funny stuff.

    A friggin 40 point lead.

    Barack Obama to win 2008 US Presidential Election 69.4 69.5 69.3 +4.3

    John McCain to win 2008 US Presidential Election 30.2 30.3 30.3 -4.1

  9. When this site experiences technical difficulties, jharp goes to other sites and declares he’s been banned here.

I think he wants to be banned, and that’s why he insulted Trig and has developed into a pretty effective troll. I imagine he’s been banned from other less classically liberal blogs, and knows how to get under skin.

Jharp, Palin won the debate. Anyone who is fair saw it. Those instant polls only proved that CNN and the other polling organizations either can’t do a poll properly or didn’t want to. They were damage control meant to protect Biden. You’re right that Palin didn’t gaffe (you swore up and down she would, and now you admit you were totally wrong).

Some slightly less worthless polls will be coming out in the next few days, and I imagine you’ll probably stop bringing polls up in every thread. Mysteriously, polls won’t be as important to you anymore when Mccain regains the lead over the next couple of weeks.

You and I both know, if this race were really between Palin and Biden, the GOP would win in a landslide.

  11. Jharp, you do realize that intrade is like an online poll? That you can easily manipulate it?

Before every debate, intrade leaps towards Obama because a lot of people are trying to use it for damage control. It’s utterly unscientific, and I imagine you didn’t think intrade was relevant when Mccain gained 20 points on it in about a day.

When it comes to Obama, anything that uses money from mysterious sources is immediately suspect. Obama is a proven astroturfer, and intrade is just another example of how to astroturf.

Oh, and I assume you don’t think intrade has predicted Biden being being replaced as VP is much more likely than Palin being replaced? You see, when you just cherry pick any results that go your way, you aren’t being rational, and it’s easy to laugh at you like you laughed at Palin’s down’s syndrome child by saying Palin is so stupid that her disabled child is smarter (which you repeatedly claim was not an insult to the disabled child).

You do know about those studies saying that Obama supporting trolls help Mccain? I totally believe it. Do you?

    harpy's anal cavity (e639cc)

  14. by the way, if you think Mccain’s chances of winning the election on intrade will tighten up, it’s not a bad time to put a few bucks on there.

Even if you suspect Obama will win (and I certainly wouldn’t call it for either of them), the odds will probably tighten up, and it’s a great way to get a few dollars at the expense of astroturfers (in my paranoid mind, anyway… it could just be zealous Obama fans).

Jharp seems to spend all hours of all days trolling conservative blogs. Not making any attempt to convince us that Obama is a person to vote for… just gloating and trolling and insulting. What motivates someone to be like that? It’s fascinating.

    Juan (4cdfb7)

  15. I have not seen gloating by any dem who saw the debate. Most of what I saw was somber moods. Yet the repubs were actually gleeful. The best libs could do is say it was a tie. But they already put it out so that a tie would be a big win for Gov Palin. Gov Palin gobsmacked Biden. She field dressed him before he knew what hit him. Biden only connected with the audience one time, when he brought up the death of his wife thirty years ago. But that could not overcome Sarah’s star turn during the debate. Sarah’s enemies’ swords were turned against them. Their plans were brought to naught. The media is going to have to really distort the samples in their polls in the next couple of weeks (50 percent democraps) in order to water down her support. Any truer voter id polls (45-45 dem/repub) splits would show this debate to be a game changer. I also hope that McCain was listening to Biden’s attacks against him so that he will be prepared to refute them at the next debate. Biden lit all the ammunition on McCain but came up empty. But McCain will have to at least answer these charges or he will start sinking his own ship again.

    eaglewingz08 (98291e)

  16. eagle, you’re right… it’s all on Mccain now, and it’s certainly losable. I personally think he has really cut out the attacks as the bailout went through, and has resisted fighting back on many fronts. I hope he comes out with both barrels blazing on Fannie and Freddie and Acorn, and of course, how the dems didn’t just distort their record there, but on Mccain. Biden was simply wrong about Mccain’s record on taxes.

Mccain can’t finish this run properly without destroying his ability to be an effective bipartisan bill-maker in the senate. He has to burn bridges. Can he?

    Juan (4cdfb7)

  17. The Obama campaign is paying people $12 per hour to sit in front of their computers and manipulate every online poll possible. I don’t believe any of them. We’ll all find out the truth on Election Day. Maybe.

    Jenny (a7a9b9)

  18. I’d consider polling for Obama for $12/hour.

    DRJ (c953ab)

  19. RIght Jenny. I suspect the astroturfers are also trying to spread hate and discontent in the ranks by denigrating everything having anything to do with McCain or Palin.

What they fail to see is that we can see and read, and follow this stuff. What they say has little effect on the regulars here.

  20. Hey WLS, wanted to give you a little blue sky today and let you know that yesterday on Politico.com (can’t seem to find it today) they reported that the RNC raised a record $66 million in September! That bodes well for their fundraising chances in October, and leaves little doubt (I would surmise) that they’ll surpass their stated goal of $100 million.

I personally don’t think it will be enough and look forward to seeing Obama’s/DNC’s numbers, but offer that up on a day you are all celebrating Palin’s (at least) capable performance. 😀

    Bob Loblaw (6d485c)

  21. Bob — there is an annoying little article over on Politico (I think) that says “McCain being badly outspent by Obama”.

Not mentioned in the article is that Obama has 100% control of his cash, while McCain has only 100% control of his public financing.

The article fails to distinguish whether the combination of McCain and the RNC are being outspent by Obama and the DNC. I doubt that is true.

It simply adds to the false narrative that Obama has more money, when he clearly does not.

I’m really curious about how long Obama will wait to report his Sept. fundraising totals.

    wls (26b1e5)

  22. WLS, I did read today that Obama is apparently outspending McCain 2.5:1 on ad buys nationally; it was within a story about McCain outspending Obama 3:1 for ads in Minnesota (I think it was at 538.com).

Something that occurs to me, is Obama allowed to privately fundraise beyond the Nov. 4th date? i.e. can he go into debt with campaign spending?

    Hey Mike,

    You are an uneducated fool.

Go read up on what a scientific poll consists of.

Good God. Are our citizens really this friggin ignorant?

And just in case you don’t get it. Drudge’s poll means absolutely nothing other than 70 % of Drudge visitors voted than Palin won.

    jharp (2282bb)

  24. “Palin doing as well as she did WILL show up in the polling starting tomorrow.”

    From TIME:

Last night in Colorado (one of the key swing states we have our eyes on), the Democratic polling group Greenberg Quinlan Rosner brought together 40 undecided women voters to watch the vice-presidential debate….

Before the debate, only 10 of the women believed Palin was not ready to be vice-president or president; by the end of the evening more than half of them (21) shared that concern.

I cannot disagree that Palin’s performance will start to show in the polls. Good point.

So friggin what if he is a doctor. He nevertheless has no idea what a scientific poll is.

“Fuck you and fuck your imaginary disabled daughter.”

Good one. My daughter is handicapped and so nice of you to say fuck her.

Does this somehow make you feel better saying fuck my 16 year old daughter?

Take a rest. McCain and his imbecile VP are toast.

You know it and I know it.

    jharp (2282bb)

  28. Peter,

McCain received public financing in early September, right after the GOP Convention on 9/1-4/2008. He can’t raise any more money except for the RNC or the McCain-Palin Compliance Fund.

    DRJ (c953ab)

  29. 70 million people watched the debate. 120 million voted in 2004. This tells me that some of the mysterious “undecideds” and left of center blue dog Dems are not quite convinced a vote for Obama is the right one. The media firestorm about Palin peaked a lot of interest and injected reasonable doubts about McCain’s judgment. They probably were looking for a reason to seal the deal for Obama. A KO by Biden would have been fatal to the campaign. The willingness to give McCai-Palin one last chance reflects uncertainty and some willingness to reconsider. Does Palin change that? As DRJ noted the polls will be telling. It is up to McCain to capitalize now. If he can ride a wave of good reaction to Palin’s performance and give the best debate performance of his career in the debate on the 7th he may just pull it off.

    voiceofreason2 (10af7e)

  30. WLS,
Sorry. should have read “As WLS noted…”

  31. #28 DRJ,

He can’t raise any more money except for the RNC or the McCain-Palin Compliance Fund.

Ah yes, thanks DRJ, that’s what it’s called, forgot. Have they released contribution totals for September? Don’t they have to make those numbers public? Could it be that it’s not a very good number for them or is it folded into the general RNC tally?

    Questions…questions..
