New York Times Complaints About Palin Were All Based on Distortions

Filed under: General — Patterico @ 10:10 am

The New York Times complained the other day:

The interviews made clear why Americans should worry about Ms. Palin’s thin résumé and lack of experience. Consider her befuddlement when Mr. Gibson referred to President Bush’s “doctrine” and her remark about having insight into Russia because she can see it from her state.

. . . .

Her answers about why she had told her church that President Bush’s failed policy in Iraq was “God’s plan” did nothing to dispel our concerns about her confusion between faith and policy. Her claim that she was quoting a completely unrelated comment by Lincoln was absurd.

Well, let’s see. It turned out that the Bush Doctrine was multifaceted — something Gibson didn’t understand. And it turned out that Palin’s comments about seeing Russia from Alaska were edited severely, causing the comment to sound bizarre, when it makes sense in context. And she hadn’t “told” her church that Iraq was “God’s plan” but rather prayed that it is.

Strike three, New York Times editors. You’re out!

Do they have anything not predicated on a distortion or a lie? Bueller? Bueller?

Leftists, of course, are sure Palin didn’t know the intricacies of the Bush Doctrine as well as Charlie Gibson. After all, he was looking at her over his glasses. Doesn’t that mean he’s smarter? Plus — though we can’t say this part out loud because it makes us seem sexist — but he is a man, after all . . . and she’s not.

It reminds me of the brouhaha over her comment that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are costing the taxpayers money: well, she was right . . . but surely she didn’t know she was right. What with her being a woman and a former beauty queen and all.

Amazing how she keeps getting lucky on the facts, isn’t it? All these smart men keep criticizing her for botching things, and the ditzy beauty queen gets proved right, time and time again. All by luck, I’m sure.

Well, we have more interviews yet to come. Let’s see if they can lay a glove on her without hitting below the belt.

Though so far, hitting Sarah Palin below the belt hasn’t seemed to hurt her much. Odd, that.

  1. From what I can tell, Sarah Palin is just like Barack Obama: almost everyone on both sides of the aisle is seeing what they want to see rather than seeing what is actually there.

It makes me wonder to what degree that’s true of other political candidates, as well.

  3. aphrael….we don’t get to see what is actually there with Obama….

The media won’t ask the questions….

Obama tries to block the research into his story….

I understand your point, that the hardliners on both sides will not open their eyes to what is real….

But, someone like me, who hates abortion but does not support a ban….who will pay taxes because of my income but wants to see taxes and spending cut….who is more than willing to accept welfare but wants to see people get off, and not get free money from the government because they choose not to work themselves for more income…..

I want to see it all…..and I get no help from anywhere…..

It’s not because he’s a man, it’s because she’s a conservative. It’s a Liberal Fact(tm) that no Conservative has an IQ over 120, and most are dumber than a bag of rocks.

Take that idiot Reagan, for example. Plain dumb luck that inflation stopped, the economy boomed and the Soviet Union collapsed. And besides was really Bush 41 who was President when the USSR went down, anyway — nothing to do with Reagan, really.

  5. Does Palin believe that to salvage Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid we need to “find efficiencies” – or was that a trick question with an edited answer?

  6. Women, they give birth and patiently answer children’s questions.

This is about the “ruling class” being challenged. She is not trained to be a ruler … and a President is supposed to govern, not rule. Shocking.

  7. Ron Paul seemed to understand the Bush doctrine and it is not “multi-faceted” at all:

GIBSON: Congressman Paul, let me ask you, do you agree with the Bush doctrine, or would you change it?
CONG. RON PAUL, (R) PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: The Bush doctrine of preemptive war is not a minor change; this is huge. This is the first time we, as a nation, accept as our policy that we start the wars. I don’t understand this.

  9. Social Security will be “saved” by letting younger contributors have private accounts. Bush tried it and was savaged but he gave up. It needs to be done. My 43-year-old son will vote for Obama, I assume, but does not believe he will see a penny of SS when he is 65. What can change that ?

Medicare and Medicaid have to be reformed and one way to do that is to roll them into a national health plan that is based on contributing for those who are working. I have already explained how I think it should work.

What Obama is proposing will NOT work. Hillary had it right. It has to be mandatory or the free riders, many of whom post on left wing blogs, will still screw up the system. McCain will not adopt this reform, most likely, because it is a generational thing. Sarah probably will, when it is her turn to be president. 2012, I would say.

  10. whaw, waaasaa…. Palin’s Alaska popularity dropping like a stone in Anchorage’s mudflats.

Now, closing to less than 50 percent. Most of Alaska’s dailies are going against for her lying about the Bridge to Nowhere she supported as Governor.

  11. Got a link for that, datalessdave?

  13. GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?

PALIN: I’m giving you that perspective of how small our world is and how important it is that we work with our allies to keep good relation with all of these countries, especially Russia.

How does that sound any less stupid than what was left in the official version?

    jpe (bd88bc)

  14. So, no, you don’t then.

  17. I think datadave is “just making stuff up.”
Can’t find a statewide poll that supports a loss in popularity for Palin. Lots of anecdotal crap from radio talk shows and “letters to the editor,” but nothing that is either substantive or credible.

Wrt dissatisfaction with Palin and the “Bridge to Nowhere”: Anti-Palinites attending yesterday’s protest in Anchorage “…included backers of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, abortion rights proponents, advocates for wolves and polar bears, opponents of the Iraq war, and people who said Palin is not ready to be a heartbeat from the presidency.”
    Nothing about “the bridge.”

  18. The state poll showing Palin’s 80% approval rating:
    http://www.haysresearch.com/oc072508.htm
That was from before she was announced as McCain’s running mate. Here is a state poll from after she was announced:
    http://news.aol.com/political-machine/2008/09/03/alaska-poll-palin-is-mrs-popularity/
Where is the data to back up your assertions, dave?

    Icy Truth (8349ff)

  19. From September 3rd:

The McCain team is sending out poll results from a new American Viewpoint poll of 400 RVs. The campaign did not commission this poll.

Job Approval for Gov. Palin: 86%
    Among Independents: 86%
    Among Democrats: 75%

    Overall:
    McCain/Palin 57%
    Obama/Biden 33%

    Among Indies:
    McCain/Palin 50%
    Obama/Biden 37%

Voters who say Energy is Top Issue:
    McCain/Palin 74%
    Obama/Biden 18%

Who is more qualified, Palin or Obama:
    Palin 30%
    Obama 31%
    Equal 29%

Does McCain chose of Palin make you more or less likely to vote for McCain:
    More likely 56%
    Less likely 15%

The interesting one here is the qualification question. Apparently 59% of Alaskans think Governor Palin is as or more qualified than Barack Obama. And they should know.

Another shocker, Palin has 75% job approval… among Democrats in Alaska!

    Icy Truth (8349ff)

  20. Forgot to include this part —

    Other findings:

The key advantage Palin brings to the GOP team is an emphasis on the reform dynamic of bringing new ideas and thinking to Washington (+59% net agreement). This is followed by +53% net agreement that the selection makes Alaskans feel proud, increases to +89% net agreement with very conservative voters; +48% net agreement that the selection makes them excited about the pick, increases to +87% net agreement with very conservative voters; and net +36% that she has the qualifications to be Vice-President, +81% net agreement with very conservative voters.

    Icy Truth (8349ff)

  21. Icy….must have been a loaded poll, if there were 75% Democratics having a positive job approval rating of Gov. Palin…

They must have polled more Democratics than Republicans in that poll…

  22. Paul got it wrong too (at least if Gibson’s definition is use).

Paul: The Bush doctrine of preemptive war is not a minor change; this is huge. This is the first time we, as a nation, accept as our policy that we start the wars. I don’t understand this.

Gibson: “We have the right of anticipatory self-defense” in the event of an imminent attack.

Preemptive war (Paul’s answer) is not the same as responding before an attack is launched (Gibson’s answer).

Palin was right to ask, “What are you talking about, Charlie?”

    SteveMG (ca3eaa)

  23. I might vote for Palin too if she gave me $3,000.00 a year from oil taxes.

Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell announced Friday that every eligible man, woman and child will receive $2,069, thanks to dividend payments from the state’s oil royalty investment program distributed annually. On top of that, the checks will include another $1,200 from the state treasury to help offset soaring fuel prices.

    Psyberian (9f6817)

  24. Psyberian, another false argument on your part. Alaska has been doing those distributions long before Palin came along.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  25. SQQR, you just make shit up as you go along. Read the article here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26564403/

The one-time energy boost was proposed by Gov. Sarah Palin and approved by state lawmakers last month.

    Psyberian (9f6817)

  26. Palin was right to ask, “What are you talking about, Charlie?”

That’s not what she did, though. She took a wild guess at what he meant. Had she said, “there are lots of things called Bush doctrines, Charlie,” it would’ve been a perfectly fine response. Instead she swung for the fences and whiffed mightily.

    jpe (bd88bc)

  27. Well, to clarify, the $1200 extra wasn’t every year before Palin came along.

    Psyberian (9f6817)

  28. From what I can tell, Sarah Palin is just like Barack Obama: almost everyone on both sides of the aisle is seeing what they want to see rather than seeing what is actually there.

    What is there, Aphrael?

    nk (d681ef)

  29. No, Psyberian, you are the one making stuff up as you’ve been caught before. From your own link:

The fund was established in 1976 after North Slope oil was discovered. Including the upcoming dividends, the fund has since yielded $16.5 billion to Alaskans since the first payout of $1,000 in 1982, according to the state Revenue Department. That’s not counting the energy relief money, which alone totals $730 million.

Before this year’s bounty, dividend payments ranged from $331 to $1,963 in 2000. Last year’s dividend payout was $1,654.

As I said, these program exists long before Palin. You attempted to insinuate that Palin was paying the full amount to buy approval. That insinuation of yours was false. The extra $1200 was proposed by her, not the dividend payments themselves as you insinuated.

You really are not very good at this.

    SPQR (26be8b)

  30. Psyberian: while the one-time boost an reasonably be laid at Gov. Palin’s feet, the regular payment cannot be; it’s a standard part of Alaskan politics.

So you can say she gave everyone $1K, but not that she gave everyone $3K.

[That said, I find it ironic that nobody seems to complain about this being socialism.]

    aphrael (9e8ccd)

  31. NK: I don’t know; I haven’t taken the time to investigate, and what I get in the press and in reading blogs seems entirely to be selectively culled points which reinforce the preconceptions of the culler. It’s frustrating, but I really have nobody to blame but myself (for not being willing to spend the time to do the research).

    aphrael (9e8ccd)

  32. Does this help? People need to follow a banner? It is not enough for people to have the means by which to live but they need a reason for which to live. But that reason is …? Just raising our children? A latte at Starbuck’s? Colonizing the stars?

What banner will give that to us lead us to that?

    nk (d681ef)

  33. You really are not very good at this.

Then why do you waste your time trying to discredit what I say? I mean, if my arguments were not any good, they wouldn’t need to be refuted now would they? As long as you’re trying to nip at my heels SPQR, I think I’m dong just fine.

Also, what has Palin done to stop this dastardly tax on the oil companies SPQR? Anything at all? I doubt it.

    Psyberian (9f6817)

  34. Obama doesn’t understand either …

Leading Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama pooh-poohed the idea that Iran or any of a few other “tiny” nations around the world offer a serious potential threat to the United States or the free world.

    .. talk is cheap ..

Nuclear experts responsible for monitoring Iran’s nuclear programme have discovered that enough enriched uranium, which if processed to weapons grade level could be used to make up to six atom bombs, has disappeared from the main production facility at Isfahan.

This may be a big “game changer”

    Icy Truth (8349ff)

  36. If my alchohol-befuddled memory is not betraying me, Alaskans were getting about $3,600.00 per person per year when oil first started pumping out of Alaska (and going to Japan). And that’s in 1978 dollars.

    nk (d681ef)

  37. Piss-boy —

what has Palin done to stop this dastardly tax on the oil companies[?]

    — What, making them pay their fare share? As opposed to the “windfall profits tax” crowd, which wants to make them pay MORE than their fare share.

    Icy Truth (8349ff)

  38. “Ron Paul seemed to understand the Bush doctrine and it is not “multi-faceted” at all…”

I’m guessing the Dalibama, at least for those dudes who worship him while living in parents’ basements playing dungeons and dragons. I’d be rather surprised if it didn’t; food and material not produced in the state has to be shipped a lot farther to get to Alaska. The climate might just impose some construction costs that aren’t present in most states.

  52. Icy Truth, I was offered a whopping salary for a job in Alaska once, but there aren’t many women there, it’s cold, and the cost of living is high. I think they pay people to move to Alaska and practically beg for workers. So a low unemployment rate there is to be expected.

    — The rate of rape is high; mortality rate (lowest in the nation), median age (3rd lowest), and percent of the population over age 65 (lowest) are all low — indicating that Alaskans tend to move away from the state as they grow older, probably due to the cold; and I already said that the cost of living is high.

“The Georgians started it; the Russians ended it,” he added.
Mr Rohrabacher claimed that unidentified intelligence sources had assured him that Georgia started the fighting that began on August 7 when Georgia’s military tried to re-establish control over its breakaway, pro-Russian province of South Ossetia.
Russia joined the battle, brutally repelled the Georgian offensive and then pushed deep into Georgia proper, where many of its forces remain nearly a month after the battle ended.

    It’s not “strategy.” It’s a fact.

Governor Sarah Palin came into the national consciousness a little over two weeks ago, and she has been targeted for political death by any means necessary by the same entities that breathed life into Barack Obama.

    * Spreading scurrilous, outrageous false rumors originated by Obamaniacs? Check.

    * Pretending the ethics investigation in Alaska is ONLY about a personal family situation and not the safety of Alaska’s citizens? Check.

    * Outright lying about supposed devastating budget cuts that actually were increases? Check.

    * Deliberately underplaying her accomplishments as Governor? Check.

    * Deliberately overblowing quarrels in her mayoral terms? Check.

    * Insulting the intelligence of Alaskans (except for the 15-17% that disapprove of her performance as Governor)? Check.

    * Temporarily resurrecting chauvinistic stereotypes to criticize the Governor’s child-raising choices? Check.

    * Female journalists reversing field on pro-Hillary charges of sexism in media coverage so they wouldn’t apply to Palin? Check.

    * Sliming her children? Check.

    * Buying (or suspiciously failing to correct) false rumors about her religious beliefs and “book banning”? Check.

    * Pretending they weren’t lying (or fooled) when they are proven flat dead wrong, to the point of editing video and correcting web pages without official acknowledgment of error? Check.

    * A Charles Gibson interview with nothing but “gotcha” questions when Obama and VP candidate John Edwards got mostly soft-toss questions? Check! […]

I could list more reasons, but I don’t have all day. But my point is made. And if you think this is all about questions about the bridge and earmarks, congratulations for getting Wi-Fi in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood of Make-Believe.

Even some Democrats are getting wise to the damage the MSM is doing to itself. My life spans five decades and I’ve been a news junkie during four of them. Never in my life have I witnessed such a disingenuous dogpile on one person in such a short time. And I double dog dare you to name another such person. Try. You can’t, so you probably won’t.

Should someone ask United Church of Christ member Barack “I won’t object if you liken me to Jesus” Obama about the book of Revelation? Remember, this is a guy who cited The Sermon on the Mount when he said he supported civil unions.

I guarantamdee you that if that question is sprung on him without warning, his response will many times more disjointed than Palin’s reply to Gibson’s question about the Bush Doctrine.

I think I know what you mean, but I don’t think a case could be made the media mania revolving those women compares to the ton of bricks that has fallen on Palin’s head. Especially considering that her record of bipartisanship, performance, and popularity is such that if she was pro-choice, she had aborted Trig, and her daughter aborted her child, she would be spoken of as VP material for Obama.

  103. Palin got the extra $1,200 by re-negotiating the value of the asset that is the property of the people of Alaska (oil) with the party contracted to deploy it, the oil companies. This is best seen as a contracting party recognizing the increased value of an asset, and insisting that the owners share more effectively in its utilization.

This is the same as a strip mall owner resetting payments by tenants when the mall starts to attract more customers. The total worth of the location goes up and both parties share in the benefit.

Sounds to me to be plain old solid negotiation to me.

You can label it a “windfall profits” tax if you like, but really it is a recognition of increased asset value to be shared.

Class, who can tell us why Mr. JAR would want someone to ask Gov. Palin about her view on “the End Times” if he doesn’t care what she thinks?

.:*Channeling Arnold Horshack*:. OH! OH! OH! OH! OH! OH!

Mr. JAR wants Governor Palin to answer an “End Times” question because he wants to start a controversy about her religious beliefs. That plays on the Democrats’ fear of religion, and could stop those who might cross over to vote for McCain. This is despite the fact he’s the type of person that downplays Barack Obama’s association with a racist, anti-American preacher.

  105. Oh, and JAR – regarding that Stratfor link. I found an interesting paragraph:

Moscow had two motives, the lesser of which was as a tit-for-tat over Kosovo. If Kosovo could be declared independent under Western sponsorship, then South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the two breakaway regions of Georgia, could be declared independent under Russian sponsorship. Any objections from the United States and Europe would simply confirm their hypocrisy. This was important for internal Russian political reasons, but the second motive was far more important.

Your man Barry Teleprompter, in his first statement on the invasion of Georgia, as reported by Reuters:

LYNCHBURG, Virginia – Democrat Barack Obama scolded Russia again on Wednesday for invading another country’s sovereign territory while adding a new twist: the United States, he said, should set a better example on that front, too.

The Illinois senator’s opposition to the Iraq war, which his comment clearly referenced, is well known. But this was the first time the Democratic presidential candidate has made a comparison between the U.S. invasion of Iraq and Russia’s recent military activity in Georgia.

“We’ve got to send a clear message to Russia and unify our allies,” Obama told a crowd of supporters in Virginia. “They can’t charge into other countries. Of course it helps if we are leading by example on that point.”

Hmmm…but the thing that annoyed Putin and the Don’t-Call-Us-Soviets was NOT Iraq, but Kosovo.

I forget, JAR…which party was running the White House in 1998?
